Many people (from what I gather) seem to think settlement building in survival mode is a difficult thing, but other than a few small adjustments it's pretty much the same. loco4pack's recent survival-tips videos were 100% the inspiration for this. If you haven't seen them, give 'em a look; he's got a lot of good info in there: https://www.youtube.com/user/loco4pack The purpose of this vanilla-no-mods-all-DLC series will be to demonstrate how to get a settlement-building survival-mode character established. Along the way I'll share all the tips and workarounds and gotchas and strategies I know. This isn't the best way to do it, or even the only way... but it's a way that works for me. I'm also trying to do new things on the channel and learn new video-editing stuff, and all feedback will definitely be welcomed. (The megabuild, methods & techniques, tips and tricks, and Moribund World-build videos will still be coming, too, for sure. Just wanted to mix it up a bit. ;) Thanks for watching.

The Megabuild Project - 11 - Graygarden Settlement Tour

Graygarden's the sixth completed settlement and it got a pretty light touch since the handful of BOS minders are under orders not to interfere with the robots at all. They're there for oversight, reporting, and maintenance as needed, but they stay up on the overpass and out of the way. I'm really, really happy with the spiral staircase and helipad. The player house was interesting and fun, too. Apologies for the delay here... my previous Internet provider was really screwing the pooch so I got a new one today. (Props to the techs; they were on time and in and out in about an hour.) Let's see how fast this video uploads--something this size usually takes about six hours. (36 minutes?! lol wtf) Next up is Oberland. Got through my "creativity lull" by building, hating, then tearing down five completely different structures in a row. Mildly time-consuming. It needs a market or trading post or something like that. There'll probably be a building video soonish. An outpost is a place with no settlers that isn't quite a full settlement, but it's more than just a bed and water pump in a hut. Since every outpost is built with a specific purpose in mind, and those purposes vary, they all come out a little different. For this installment of the series we're going to visit two barnacle outposts, a repurposing-of-the-original-building outpost, and a free-standing structure outpost. Now to clear out the rest of the south end of town and City Hall so we can unlock that settlement--and pick up the stuff that was the whole reason for coming down here in the first place. Not sure when the next episode of this is going to be, though. The roughly hour and a half of recording after this was pretty much moving stuff around, fiddling with stuff, and various types of maintenance... which is boring as hell. With the player home built, the next step (as always) is to get a beacon built, start luring in some settlers, and give them a house and some work to do. I did turn off STS for this phase since I needed to build on that rocky hill and I had forgotten that scrap mods do funky things to the terrain. (Thanks onawhim7737!) I might leave it off as long as I can just so I can build stuff easier, but I guess we'll see. Oh, and if the sound balance is off (like my voice is too loud or too soft or the music's too loud or too soft) could you let me know? I'm having a hard time figuring out if the sound levels are at least close to what they used to be. Settlements and Survival - First Perks and Heading to Sunshine

Now that we've got the fundamentals of our base built, it's time to buy some perks, upgrade our stuff, gather our party, and venture forth. Our first goal is nabbing the Wasteland Survival Guide at Sunshine Tidings. We haven't yet converted to an agricultural society so we need to maximize our hunting and gathering. Double meat on most kills will save us a lot of time. I'm experimenting with different video-editing effects and methods and I'm not sure how well they work, so if you see something weird or that doesn't work I'd really appreciate any feedback and suggestions you might have. The Megabuild Project - 19 - Hangman's Alley Settlement Tour

The next-to-last settlement for the northwest hub is (finally) done, and it was... problematic. On top of not being able to decide how it should work, there was a plethora of game-physics weirdnesses, especially in the courtyard area, when Scrap Fallout was loaded. Definitely the most challenging and frustrating of the settlements to build so far. On the bright side, the radscorpion by the water pumps had a nice legendary on him. This is the second waystation of the three in this project, but unlike Taffington--and due to its size and location--Hangman's is streamlined and built for pure efficiency. No wasted motion here. Sunshine Tidings Outpost Microbuild (Immersive Gameplay mod)

The Sunshine Tidings microbuild implementation takes a lot of cues from various other builds, and similar to Starlight, I avoided scrapping too much of the existing stuff so it could be repurposed here. The megabuild bunkhouse I referred to (for comparison and more obvious influences) is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7gZUekPY3o&t=171 At first I thought I could lash two of the cabins together with fencing to make them an enclosed unit, but they're just too far apart--it made it way more obvious there was a "settlement" around. Abernathy Feeder Farm Settlement Tour (Immersive Gameplay mod)

With the fortified town set up and running, the only thing that he needs is a safe, secure place to grow a ton of crops, and Abernathy Farm is well suited. It's close enough to the Red Rocket depot that transferring the workbench contents won't take too long, it's fairly well isolated and not near any raider hideouts, and if the settlers don't blab about it to strangers, it should be fine. Settlements and Survival - Croup Manor Rooftop Outpost

Refitting Croup Manor to make a medium-sized full-featured outpost was a bit challenging, mostly due to the game crashing at an astonishing rate: nine full lockups and two system resets. I guess this place is cursed. Or my XB1 is. Or why not both. A self-imposed challenge for this build was to not attach it to the provisioner network and only use the stuff I could find within "walking distance" to build it. It came out pretty good, I think. Here's the flagship build so far, and my favorite settlement to build on--Taffington. This is the SS' main residence and he has a small house of his own with all his personal effects. This place has a lot of features and stuff in it. Hopefully a 20-minute tour won't be too long, but I promise there's no filler or wasted space. Sanctuary Fortified Village Settlement Tour (Immersive Gameplay mod)

So I've been playing the heck out of the Immersive Gameplay mod lately and--like Moribund World--it definitely influenced and changed my building style. The regular scrappitude is there, but the layout and design is... different. Much different. Heck, it's surrounded by walls! What's up with that? This defensible village in Sanctuary grew from necessity; my character is not strong enough or skilled enough to range very far, and it became very clear very quickly that he needed a fortified full-service base as quickly as he could manage. This is what he and a dozen settlers came up with. Starlight Drive-In Outpost Microbuild (Immersive Gameplay mod)

One thing that IG has changed about my building style, even more than Moribund does, is it strongly encourages building smaller, less obtrusive, and more heavily defended than I ever have. Something about the way sudden death awaits you at nearly every turn, no matter where you are or what you are doing, makes this character way more paranoid than any of the others. And that paranoia is definitely reflected in this build, which is by far the smallest of the four I've set up so far. Hope this gives you some ideas for your own builds, though I gotta admit there's more furnishing and arranging than decorating in this one. Jamaica Plain Microbuild/Self-Challenge (Moribund World mod)

Another microbuild, but this time with the Moribund World mod and with a self-challenge limitation: no provisioners. This a pretty compact and tidy full-featured settlement, and it's about as small as it gets, I think. Maybe I can make a smaller one, though... We'll be revisiting this character and some of his tiny little outpost houses in future, in all likelihood. This particular playthrough has been more experimental than most, from a building perspective, and some of his structures are kind of interesting and, well... strange, too. Thanks for watching. Unlike other feeder settlements, this one's got more than just a bed, pump, stove, and chest--it's more full-service with workstations and a decon arch. Red Rocket Build (Moribund World mod)

Here's a build that's... a little different. The Moribund World mod seems to only change the lighting, contrast, hue, and weather frequency. The Start Me Up - Alternate Start mod removes the "where's my kid" dynamic and adds ten different starting locations and equipment sets. All the other mods I use are the same. The game feels significantly different with these two installed. It's really changing the way I approach builds in this playthrough. This is what this character's "home" looks like. The Megabuild Project - 12 - Oberland Marketplace Build

Oberland's almost finished; all it needs is a place to put the vendors, so in this double-speed build video, we give 'em one. I misspoke during the narration; replace "Golden" with "Atlantic" when you hear me mention that reference. Now that I've finished building in Oberland, it's time to decorate it and tour it. After that we're going to Hangman's or Zimonja; not sure yet. The pace of these videos might be slowing a bit since I'm running out of worked-on settlements, and it takes me a long time to build. Plus the holidays are coming. Mods will be on PS4 by the end of the month, according to Bethesda, and it looks like an all-objects mod has already been uploaded. Future settlement builds will likely have PS4-mod-friendly assets in them. Time to check out what's available! The Megabuild Project - 13 - Oberland Station Settlement Tour

Time for the Oberland tour. This was a strange build, since Oberland is sort of extraneous, given that Graygarden (a fairly large production settlement) and Hangman's (the southwest waystation) are both less than a mile away. It doesn't really serve a unique purpose, so it's become kind of a rest stop between the north and south. A place to shop and get a snack, maybe take a quick nap, then keep on traveling. Next in the series is Zimonja, where I'll be doing a short series of let's-builds from the ground up. Am curious to see how it'll turn out. The Greentop Day Spa and Retreat is officially open for business and the initial group of customers seems pretty happy with it. It's a pretty densely packed setup, but that just means guests don't have to wander around very much to see everything and do whatever they like. This one was fun to do, in a different way, but far more time-consuming than I expected--mostly because this kinda thing is outside my comfort zone and it requires more experimentation and trial-and-error than my typical scrappy builds. Pretty happy with how it turned out, though... it has the "feel" I was going for if not the exact "look." Thanks for watching.
