Consumption and waste. Environmental degradation and conservation. No matter where we live, these issues affect our lives. But how do these issues manifest differently around the world? How do global issues connect to local contexts? How are contemporary challenges handled in different places around the world? And how can we present these important topics to students in ways that will both engage them and connect them to the larger world? This two-day professional development workshop brought together award-winning journalists supported by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and digital educational resources created by Pulitzer Center and UChicago to address the incorporation of current global issues in the classroom. The Institute is presented by the University of Chicago Center for East Asian Studies, Center for East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies, Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Neighborhood Schools Program, Oriental Institute, and UChicago Engages, in partnership with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. It is made possible through generous support from the Title VI National Resource Center grants from the US Department of Education. A sedimentary rock composed mainly of carbon, is used to produce electricity or heat through combustion. It currently meets a third of the world's energy needs and produces roughly two fifths of the global electricity. Coke, a fuel usually derived coal is used for smelting iron ore during steel manufacturing. Konate Group entered the coal market in 2008 and today trades both steam and coal anthracite out of four main regional centres, which are Singapore, India, Canada and Geneva. We partner with, in the United States, Indonesia, Canada and South Africa in every major mining region in the world. We invest in production, logistics and infrastructures and supply coal across the Asia pacific region and into most of the main European power utilities.

The ten countries with the most people in modern slavery (victims of human trafficking). Subscribe to TDC: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ The study: https://www.globalslaveryindex.org/findings/ Get involved: http://www.freetheslaves.net/ Full interview with Kevin Bales: http://n.pr/1S54uR7 Video researched, written, narrated, and directed by Bryce Plank Visualization and editing by Robin West Music: "Enter the Maze" by Kevin MacLeod http://incompetech.com/ "Phife for Life" by Otis McDonald Script: Slavery used to look like this, then it evolved into this, and today it looks like this. In fact, there are an estimated 45.8 million people living in modern slavery across 167 different countries. They fall into three general categories: children held in the commercial sex trade; adults held in the commercial sex trade; and any other laborer made to work through force, fraud, or coercion. The trafficking victim often looks like anybody else at work in a mine, on a farm, in a factory. Many are lured by promises of a steady job in another country, only to have their passports confiscated when they arrive. However, many slaves work in their native countries or even the cities where they were born. According to The Global Slavery Index, these ten countries are home to the most modern slaves. They each suffer from income inequality, discrimination and classism, and entrenched corruption. Number ten, Indonesia, produces about 35% of the world’s palm oil. The many small palm plantations present an immense challenge to inspectors trying to crack down on child labor. The country’s many islands are also home to tens of thousands of enslaved fisherman trafficked from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. Number nine is the Democratic Republic of Congo. 20,000 of the DRC’s more than 870,000 slaves live in one of the most hellish landscapes on the planet, a vast ore mine in the east of the country. The terrorist group Boko Haram gets overshadowed by ISIS, although it kills more people. When it comes to enslavement, one of its tactics is to give Nigerian entrepreneurs loans and then force them to join their group if they fail to repay fast enough. Seventh is Russia. 55% of the slaves there work in construction. Foreigners are lured mainly from nearby Azerbaijan, the “stans,” Ukraine, and North Korea—thanks to this border on the far eastern edge of Russia. The North Korean government is the world’s largest single slaveholder. Not only does it force more than one million of its people to toil in labor camps and other similarly hopeless situations, but it actually loans out some people to work in neighboring China and Russia, then pockets most of their wages. This exploitation generates about $2.3B each year for the Kim Jong-un regime. The fifth most enslaved country, Uzbekistan, is the world’s sixth largest producer of cotton. It has benefited from forced labor, as the government puts more than 1 million people to work using threats of debt bondage, heavy fines, asset confiscation, and police intimidation. Slave recruiters in Bangladesh promise poor families that their boys will be given a job, only to be enslaved on a faraway island and beaten to clean fish for up to 24 hours straight. Often, these fish are exported as cat food for our pets. Sometimes, the boys meet a gruesome death when they are eaten by tigers while searching for firewood. Third is Pakistan, which has suffered through decades of conflict, terrorism, and displacement—especially along its northwestern border with Afghanistan. Its provinces have not raised the minimum age of marriage, which has allowed the widespread problem of forced and child weddings to continue. Over 250 million Chinese have migrated within the country to find better opportunities, creating the ideal conditions for human trafficking. Each year, 58 million children are ‘left behind’ as their parents search of work in the China’s many booming cities. Every year, up to 70,000 children fall into forced begging, illegal adoption, and sex slavery. And number one is India, which has - by far - the most victims of modern slavery. While economic growth has greatly reduced the percentage of its citizens living in poverty, the country’s sheer size still results in more than 270 million Indians living on less than $2/day. It’s unsurprising that inter-generational bonded labor, forced child labor, commercial sexual exploitation, forced begging, forced recruitment into nonstate armed groups, and forced marriage all exist in India. The government has already created many of the laws necessary to fight the epidemic, but the challenge is enforcing those laws and tracking improvements and areas of continued need.

Uplifting the health of a nation through sport Raphael Mulenga had always wanted to make a difference to the development of his country, and he believes his Australian education empowered him to do just that. In 2011 Raphael received an Australia Awards scholarship to study a Master of Policy Studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. After completing his studies, he returned to his position of Provincial Sport Development Coordinator in Chipata, an Eastern Province of Zambia. Raphael connects an African saying to his work ethos, he says “If you want to walk fast, walk alone, but if you want to walk very far, walk with someone”. Raphael made the decision to not walk alone. Soon after returning to Zambia he took on the role of Chief Sports Development Officer in charge of programmes at the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development. In this role he works with the government ministry team working towards contributing to the development of the large youth population in Zambia in the area of sport development. He says “We are very few who are privileged….and with the privilege which I’ve been given I should help out. In the next ten years I would like to see Zambia developing, not only socially, but economically.” Since 2013 Raphael has lead a number of programmes and activities, travelling with the Zambian sports team to the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and representing the country at the Conference of Parties to the International Convention against Doping in Sport and the UNESCO 38th General Conference at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. He says “I would like to use my position and my role in the ministry to contribute…. We feel that sport is one strategy we can use to uplift the health living of people...through sport we can be able to attract them to education, because that’s where their future is.’ Today he is the Anti-Doping National Desk Officer who spearheads all issues pertaining to fighting doping in sport. With the price of precious metals surging on the world market, Ghana is experiencing a new gold rush as more people try and get access to its most famous export. Unfortunately, much of that effort revolves around unlicensed - and hence illegal - mining operations, known locally as galamsey, which are often funded by foreign speculators and criminals. The potential profits are huge but few if any of the groups and individuals involved will spare a thought for the environmental destruction illegal mining causes or for the safety of workers they hire, on pitiful salaries, to extract the gold on their behalf. How do you square economic development with protection of the environment? That's become a big issue in some of Ghana's gold producing regions recently. An upsurge in illegal mining - known locally as galamsey - has led to environmental problems and the subsequent arrest of hundreds of Chinese. Discussions are still on-going over what should happen to them. But what's going on in the areas affected. Sammy Darko went to Dunkwa on Offin in the country's central region

"Recently if you read from the newspapers the past week or so you have been seeing arrests of foreign nationals, including Chinese, detained, being screened, and possibly deported when they find out they don't have the documentation, which in most cases they don't have," he said in Accra. The Chinese gold-diggers are accused of forcibly taking over people's land in farming areas near artisanal mines. One farmer, whose crops were destroyed, said that they arrived at night. When he woke up, he found the Chinese had taken over his farm. The farmer alleged that they waved a gun at him when he tried to approach them. Ghana is the continent's second largest gold producer, and has forbidden foreigners from working in its small-scale mines since the 1980s. Read More: http://www.GistOnThis.com About a quarter of the Melanesian population in the Solomon Islands archipelago has an extremely unusual trait -- dark skin with blond hair. The archipelago, located east of Papa New Guinea in Oceania, consists of a thousand islands inhabited by over half a million Melanesian people. They have the darkest skin in the world outside of Africa, but strangely, about one-fourth of the inhabitants sport blond afros. This rare Melanesian characteristic has baffled scientists and genetic experts for years. Up until now, they have attributed the trait to inheritance -- from the Europeans, especially the British, German and Australians, who have been associated with the island for hundreds of years. Several of the islands were under German jurisdiction in the 19th century. In 1893, the UK took southern Solomon Islands under their wing, declaring the region a protectorate. The rest of the islands were added to the protectorate at a later stage. And in the early 20th century, Australian and British companies set up coconut plantations on many of the islands. So it isn't entirely unbelievable that the dark-skinned Melanesians got their blond hair from the growing influx of 'outsiders'. The locals, however, prefer not to go by that theory. They have been insisting for years that their blond hair is a result of a diet rich in fish and constant exposure to the sun. As it turns out, both theories are quite far from the truth. According to a recent investigation, random mutation might actually be the answer to the mystery of the Melanesian blonds. Sean Myles, the author of the study and geneticist at Nova Scotia Agricultural College, pointed out that there is almost no variation in the shades of blond hair. This suggests that the hair color is governed by genes. "It looked pretty obvious to me that it was a real binary trait," he said. "You either had blond hair or you didn't." To locate this underlying blueprint in the Melanesian genetic pool, Myles and his colleagues collected saliva and hair samples from over 1,200 Solomon Islanders. From these samples, they compared the genetic makeup of 42 dark-haired and 43 blond islanders. What the scientists discovered was pretty phenomenal -- the two groups possessed very different versions of a crucial gene, TYRP1, which coded for a protein involved in pigmentation. Just switching one letter of the genetic code (a 'T' instead of a 'C'), marked the difference between dark hair and blond hair. Only one amino acid in the protein is different (arginine replaced by cysteine). So 25 percent of the Solomon islanders carry two copies of the mutant recessive gene. That means the blonds could have inherited their hair color from both parents. "It's a great example of convergent evolution, where the same outcome is brought about by completely different means," said Myles. Jonathan Friedlaender, an anthropologist at Philadelphia's Temple University, explained that the mutation probably arose by chance in one individual. It appears to have gained in frequency because the original population of the island was pretty small. Myles added: "If you can find a gene for blond hair that exists in Melanesia and nowhere else, then there's no reason why those sorts of genes don't exist all over the world in underrepresented populations, and affect not only hair pigmentation, but also disease-related traits." The study also traced the origins of the Melanesian people in an effort to understand the mutant gene. They discovered that while all humans outside of Africa have genes passed down from the Neanderthals, Melanesians are the only known humans with a different prehistoric ancestry. They are believed to have evolved from an interbreeding of the Denisova hominin, Neanderthal man's distant cousin. So the islanders have slightly different genes, which gives them their unique blond hair.

Some 950 miners are stuck underground in central South Africa after a power cut prevented them from returning to the surface. The massive power outage caused by a thunderstorm cut electricity to the lifts in the Beatrix gold mine in Welkom, Free State, leaving the entire night shift stuck in the pit.The Sibanye-Stillwater mining company maintains that none of the miners are reported to be in immediate danger, but the local workers union has raised concern about the potential health risks.'All employees appear to be fine.We are supplying food and water,' James Wellsted, spokesman for Sibanye-Stillwater, told AFP.He said the depth where the miners were trapped was uncertain, but the mine has 23 levels, going down to about 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) below ground.About 65 people were rescued during the day, after one cable was restored, with 950 remaining trapped by early evening, the company said.Wellsted said that engineers were struggling to get emergency generators to operate and re-start the lifts.'We are having some issues - probably related to the power surge linked to the storm - in getting the winders working, so we are busy working on that issue at the moment,' he added.'Last night there was a severe storm in the Free State that affected two different power cables.and cut off all electricity supply to the mine, so we were unable to bring the night shift up.' However, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) branded the incident as 'extreme' due to the large number of people trapped in the mine. The union added that workers' lives could be in danger from dehydration and lack of nutrition, especially if they were on medication.'AMCU views this incident as extreme due to the sheer number of workers involved,' it said in a statement.'The incident raises serious concern regarding the lacking emergency contingency plans at the mine for alternative and back-up power generation.'It is quite common for adults to be on chronic medication and it is highly probable that there are some workers who are trapped without access to their medicine.' Last August five mineworkers died after sections of a gold mine collapsed outside Johannesburg. The country possesses rich mineral reserves and has some of the world's deepest gold mines.Gold was for many decades the backbone of South Africa's economy, but production has declined sharply due to depletion of reserves.

Egypt is on the verge of once again becoming a world-renown gold producer. The Golden Age is being rediscovered. For millennia, ancient Egyptian kingdoms prospered from unparalleled riches. Pharaohs built their empires and flaunted their abundant wealth that was made possible by the country’s resource-rich gold deposits. Despite this rich history, modern Egypt remains one of the most underdeveloped gold mining countries in the world. In this interview, Ossama El Maghraby shares how Egypt is currently undergoing a mining renaissance of which many are not aware. He is the chairman of Gold Pyramid Group which currently represents and manages Resolute Mining’s Egyptian operations. Ossama has over 12 years experience working in the mining industry in Egypt. While working for Centamin he was in charge of handling governmental affairs. Centamin owns the world-class Sukari gold mine which is the only operating gold mine currently in Egypt. Ossama shares in this interview that he believes many of the positive changes proposed for mining reform are on the verge of being implemented. 0:05 Introduction 1:40 Ossama El Maghraby’s background and mining experience in Egypt 3:37 Overview of mining in Egypt today 4:36 Egyptian government’s relationship with mining companies 7:34 How soon will Egypt implement positive changes to the mining code? 9:01 Ossama comments on the current law regarding joint ventures between the Egyptian government and producing mining companies 10:52 Foreign countries roles in helping Egypt with mining reform 12:18 How mining reform is legally implemented in Egypt 14:44 Mining in Egypt was unaffected by the 2013 governmental change 15:58 Current opportunities for investors and mining companies in Egypt Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 The content found on MiningStockEducation.com is for informational purposes only and is not to be considered personal legal or investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell securities or any other product. Natural Sound Thousands of coal mine workers in Pakistan face losing their jobs because of a tax increase which mine owners say is forcing them to close down. The government says the tax rise is a penalty for mine owners who are selling coal to companies that are not registered. But the Mine Workers Association says the move has hit the miners instead. It suggests more than 200 pits have already been closed in Baluchistan and Punjab provinces, with the loss of thousands of jobs. Very few coal mines in Kushab in Pakistan's Punjab province remain open. This area produces about 450-thousand tons of coal yearly. But more than 200 mines have been closed in the Punjab alone after the government introduced a two percent tax increase. The closure in the Punjab will affect 50-thousand workers who have no other means of making a living. Mine workers here are paid around 100 U-S dollars a month. Baluchistan province is Pakistan's biggest coal producer with one (M) million and 800-thousand tons of coal - but the province also shut down its mines last June and very few have since been reopened. For the past four years, coalmine owners in Pakistan have been paying 16 percent sales tax, but in this year's budget the government raised the tax to 18 percent. Mine owners say they can't afford to pay the increase as business is bad enough as it is. The cost of coal per ton varies from 500 rupees (9 U-S dollars) to 12-hundred rupees (22 U-S dollars) depending on the quality. The Mine Workers Association says the shutdown has put 50-thousand miners out of work without pay. Miners say the decline of the coal industry will also affect their families. SOUNDBITE: (Urdu) \"The mines have been closed because the owners say they can't afford to keep them open. They gave us notice that they were closing. The situation is that we only have the skills to work in this industry and it is the only way for us to earn a living. But there is also a knock on effect on our families. We have children and brothers and sisters - they were going to work in the mines but now this will not happen.\" SUPER CAPTION: Mineworker Protests by the mine workers intensified over the past couple of months. They want the government to reverse it decision on the tax hike. The coal mining industry has been in a slump for the last two years and some say the shutdown won't be a big financial hardship on the owners who have been running at a loss. But many are still blaming the government. SOUNDBITE: (Punjabi) \"We want the sales tax to be abolished so that we can get on with our lives and can go back to earn a living so we can feed our children\" SUPER CAPTION: Mine worker The brick industry will be hard hit by the coal mines shutdown - the effects of which will be felt immediately because there are no coal stockpiles. There are roughly 10-thousand brick kilns in Punjab province, some of which already shut down because they were receiving their coal from Baluchistan. The transport industry which relies heavily on the business of transporting coal to the brick kilns will also be affected. The government received 25 rupees (50 cents) per ton of coal in royalties - which it will lose out on if the mine owners chose to stay closed. But officials say the rise in tax is for a legitimate reason. SOUNDBITE: (English) SUPER CAPTION: Iqbal Fareed, Chairman Central board of revenue The government has shown signs recently that it may be open to discussion with the mine owners. But the workers say it just may be too little, too late. Tattoos hurt, but for most people, the pain is just a means to an end. Tattoo artists are usually mindful of their client's pain threshold, catering for breaks and mitigating any unnecessary brutality. It's abnormal for tattoo artists to restrain people while they're getting tattooed, or for the tattooee to bolt upright in agony to escape the needle's unrelenting penetrations. Nor is it very common to see sadistic mirth occupying the faces of multiple tattoo artists as they inflict the unnaturally long, thick, shallow lines seemingly without pause. Enter Brutal Black. It's the tattoo project where mandalas come to die and where pain is prioritized over aesthetics. Ritual and rebirth are at the forefront of this project helmed by Valerio Cancellier and Cammy Stewart. They take those brave enough to be tattooed by them on one of the most brutal experiences one can imagine; far beyond one's threshold for pain to create an entirely new experience. Stuart Brown, the chief executive of Firestone Diamonds (LON:FDI), tells Proactive Investors the company has delivered on all the promises it made when he took the helm eight months ago. Since then, the AIM-listed group has raised the funds needed to make the Liqhobong mine in Lesotho a reality and has just started building the mine. Brown says the new designs should limit any diamond damage that affected the size of the stones in the pilot phase.

The South African National Memorial in Delville Wood, near Longueval, is stunning. No other word for it. This short video hopefully shows it at its best without glossing over the fact it is a Memorial to 10,000 South African fallen soldiers. The assualt on 'Devils' Wood', then called Bois d'Elville took place in July 1916. For five days the South Africans conducted a bitter battle among the trees and water filled shell holes. Despite every effort, part of the wood remained uncaptured when the South Africans were relieved on 20 July. It was not finally cleared until 27 August. In the fighting, the South African Brigade lost over 2,300 men. Today, the Memorial commemorates not only the 10,000 South African dead of the First World War, but other major conflicts as well including the Second World War and Korea. Delville Wood, (renamed because the troops called it 'Devil's Wood') remained the most costly action the South African Brigade fought on the Western Front. In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History. Our Subbable Dooblydoo message today is from James Williams. He writes, "Gracie Mckenna, luck is, indeed, for suckers." Watch our new Weed Travel show, Blunt Reviews: https://vice.video/2L69pT0 Check out other videos from Weediquette here: http://bit.ly/1iVLbL7 You might not know who Arjan Roskam is, but you've probably smoked his weed. Arjan's been breeding some of the most famous marijuana strains in the world—like White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many others—for over 20 years. In 1992 he opened his first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has since crafted his marijuana-breeding skills into a market-savvy empire known as Green House Seed Company, which rakes in millions of dollars a year. He's won 38 Cannabis Cups and has dubbed himself the King of Cannabis. VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called landraces. We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade.
