Nigella Lawson in conversation with Annabel Crabb

01:18:58
With her feet firmly on the ground, and her finger in the mixing bowl, Nigella Lawson has charmed us with her approach to food and cooking. Based on the principle that food should be a simple pleasure to cook and to eat, her recipe books emphasise the importance of friends, family and celebration. At a time when many of the messages we get about food alternate between anxious exhortations to eat ‘clean’ and the technical wizardry of competitive cooking, her relaxed and realistic approach shows a different path, where food can be creative, a source of comfort and a joyful part of life. http://sydneyoperahouse.com/ideas Subscribe and find more videos from Ideas at the House: http://www.youtube.com/ideasatthehouse Get a new talk every week on our podcast: Audio - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/sydney-opera-house-ideas-at/id640445035 Video - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/sydney-opera-house-ideas-at/id640444896 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/IdeasAtTheHouse Twitter - https://twitter.com/ideasatthehouse

Human Rights, Populism and the Crisis of Meaning - Dr Waleed Aly

01:04:18
Dr Aly's presentation looks at how the grand narratives of politics have evolved to sideline human rights ideals, and why assertive forms of nationalism are so well placed to occupy the resultant vacuum. He argued that for human rights to regain their persuasive power, they need to rediscover a way to become enchanted: imbued with some politically compelling meaning. This lecture was hosted by Curtin University at the Annual Human Rights Lecture on 19 August 2017. Explore more: http://humanrights.curtin.edu.au/

David Paul watch DP2 from KickStarter (Homage to iconic Seiko 6105)

11:55
Unboxing and first thoughts. https://www.facebook.com/groups/kickstarter.watches/ I absolutely love this watch, there is no question about that. Only thing I do not like is that straps are short. They are made for 20cm maximum wrist diameter and not for mine of 21cm. Now, that been said, we can go further with description. This is a pure and almost exact copy of legendary "Seiko 6105 Diver" and most of world wide reputation that Seiko find on Martin Sheen wrist in "Apocalypse Now" movie about Vietnam war. Actually, because the Seiko 6105 truly was a common choice of GIs during the conflict, (was available from the PX stores (retail stores found on United States military installations) for soldiers) and in a way started an entire trend for budget-priced oversized steel tool watches when they returned stateside. Developed by Seiko in the late 1960s, the large (44mm) asymmetrical watch boasted 150 meters of water resistance, a bi-directional bezel for dive timing and large swaths of luminescent material for high visibility underwater with double domed Hardlex and Seiko caliber 6105B, a 17 jewel full rotor automatic that runs at 21,600 bph. It is not hand windable, but the automatic winding mechanism is so efficient that one flick of the wrist will start it running from a dead stop. One nice touch that is not often found in Seiko divers (vintage or modern) is that this movement hacks, meaning the second hand stops when the crown is pulled out. Used extensively in the field by soldiers and frogmen, the 6105 developed a reputation as a no-nonsense timepiece for professional use, a reputation that has lasted through to this day and undoubtedly inspired countless diving watches in the subsequent decades. So, this is almost exact replica of that watch except of lug width. In original Seiko that was then usual 19mm, but on this watch is most common 20mm so there is no problem with strap change and I already change my strap to longer one and in nylon/leather combination of NATO green. DP2 watch use Seiko NH35a movement which is practically third generation of original movement ( 24 jewel full rotor automatic that runs at 21,600 bph, hand windable, diashock system, power reserve 41 hours, Bi-directional automatic winding). The case is made from solid 316L stainless steel. The brush finishing on the cushion-cut case is nice and close to original. The crown is at 4 o’clock and is protected by the bulging crown guard, but this one is screw in/out type and original was pull/push type with pin lock, but both are same size about 6.3mm wide, with shallow grooves covering the whole thing and six grooves giving relatively good grip. The glass is double AR coated sapphire, slightly domed, with a beveled circumference, giving the dial outer rim at certain angles shades of dark blue. The Dial is finished in anti-reflective black. Hour and minute hands are lume filled faceted steel baton style, while the second hand is a unique “stop light” style (as original) with lume filled holes at the tip. Large hands are painted with C3 Super-LumiNova. Quick set date is at three o'clock position. The DP2 watch is 200m water resistant and because of that suitable for swimming and snorkeling without any doubt. DP-2 comes with a limited warranty covering flaws in workmanship and materials for a period of ONE (1) year after the original purchase and everything came in leather watch roll. In the end, I have only one conclusion. This is a excellent and truly tribute to original Seiko 6015 Diver with few modern twitch and upgrade (NH35a movement & sapphire glass). I like it very much and only can recommend it. Thanks for reading and watching.

Jennifer Davis: "Called Again" | Talks at Google

55:24
Called Again: An Afternoon Event with 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis In 2011, two-time Appalachian Trail thru-hiker Jennifer Pharr Davis wanted to test her limits. With the support of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of volunteers dubbed the "Pit Crew," Jen hiked, stumbled, and sometimes crawled the 2,181 mile A.T. in 46 days (an average of 47 miles per day), becoming the fastest person to hike the trail and the first woman to ever set the mark. And for that, she's been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR's Talk of the Nation, Guideposts Magazine, and the CBS Early Show. But Jen's story is not about records or numbers; it's about endurance, faith, and most of all, love. She will be speaking about the many challenges and lessons that present themselves along the trail, showing slides from over 12,000 miles of long-distance hiking which she has completed on six different continents. Jen will also be answering questions about her hiking exploits on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Colorado Trail, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Peru's Inca Trail, the Tour du Mont Blanc, Australia's Bibbulmun Track, Vermonts Long Trail, and others. After her presentation, she will be signing copies of her new book Called Again: A Story of Love and Triumph, which Kirkus Reviews has called "an inspired exploration of the meaning of commitment."

HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE FOR OCCUPY SYDNEY

01:33
Hundreds of Occupy Sydney protesters have taken to the streets under the watchful eyes of a heavy police presence. People from all walks of life converged on Town Hall at midday on Saturday bearing banners with slogans like 'You can't eat money' and 'Stop police brutality'. The Occupy Sydney activists, who are part of a worldwide protest against corporate greed, have vowed to re-occupy Martin Place indefinitely, despite police assurances they will be removed at 4.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday. '99 per cent, 99 per cent, 99 per cent', protesters chanted as they gathered at Town Hall for speeches. Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) Sydney branch secretary Paul McAleer told the crowd they were part of 'the most inspirational movement of working people in the history of humanity'. 'It doesn't matter what country you live in or what union you belong to or what religion you are or what colour you are. 'The 99 per cent says we are together and we are not going to be exploited or repressed any longer,' he said to massive cheers. There was a significant police presence at the rally, with riot squad officers, mounted police and two police trucks on standby. NSW Police dropped their Supreme Court action against the protest on Friday after protesters agreed to change the route of the march. However, Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said officers would be watching the demonstration and would take 'reasonable action' if protesters failed to leave Martin Place at the agreed time of 4.30pm (AEDT). Occupy Sydney spokesman Ben Peterson told AAP the police response was 'disappointing'. 'We're very disappointed police have turned up with mobile holding cells, horses, riot squad just around the corner,' he said. 'If police try to move on a lawful public peaceful assembly, then that's a travesty on their part.' Last month, police were accused of using excessive force after 40 protesters were arrested in a dawn raid that ended the group's week-long protest in Martin Place. Occupy Sydney has maintained there is no such thing as an illegal public assembly. A decision will be made on Saturday afternoon on whether they should re-occupy Martin Place indefinitely, Mr Peterson said. 'It is perfectly within everyone's rights to assemble peacefully and in a public place and that's what we'll be doing,' he said. 'The last thing Occupy is about is violent confrontations. It's about having a public discourse for as long as possible, involving as many people as possible.' People from a broad range of unions and activist groups were represented at the rally, which was taking place in Martin Place from 2pm (AEDT). People from Stop the Northern Territory Intervention, the NSW Teachers Federation, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), Lock the Gate anti-CSG mining group and refugee support groups were all present. 'Who are we?' an Occupy Sydney spokeswoman asked the crowd. 'We are the workers, we are the indebted, we are the immigrants and the indigenous. We are homeless, we are the students, we are the unemployed, we are the under-represented people of the world. We are the 99 per cent. We are Occupy Sydney.' - 5 November 2011.

Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian (whimsically) expresses a desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging. The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered a work of classic gothic fiction with a strong Faustian theme. Frankenstein Audiobook ; or The Modern Prometheus (1818) by Mary Shelley | Audiobook with subtitles

07:58:25
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by the British author Mary Shelley. Shelley wrote the novel when she was 18 years old. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818, and this audiobook is read from that text. Shelley's name appeared on the revised third edition, published in 1831. The title of the novel refers to the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who learns how to create life and creates a being in the likeness of man, but larger than average and more powerful. In modern popular culture, people have tended to refer to the Creature as "Frankenstein" (especially in films since 1931), despite this being the name of the scientist, and the creature being unnamed in the book itself. Frankenstein is a novel infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement. It was also a warning against the "over-reaching" of modern man and the Industrial Revolution, alluded to in the novel's subtitle, The Modern Prometheus. The story has had an influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories and films. It is arguably considered the first fully-realised science fiction novel and raises many issues still relevant to today's society. (Summary from wikipedia.org, adapted by Cori Samuel.) How Corporate Optometry Works (And what Independents can do Next)

56:38
Ever wondered How Corporate Optometry works? And how can Independent Optometrists market themselves effectively? I recently had a chance to interview Mark Overton. He has the best understanding of Corporate Optometry of anyone I've heard! We cover Marketing and how you can position your practice for success. Here's one of my favourite quotes from the interview: "You don't have to win the national battle, as an optometrist, in Watsonia or in Melbourne or an optometrist in Cairns, Queensland, or an optometrist in Armidale, New South Wales. You only have to be the best in your market, in your local market, not the state market, not the capital market, not the Australian market."  -Mark Overton, Ideology Consulting Plus we cover more local marketing strategies and tactics. ----------------------------- Want to make contact with Mark? 2014 QUT Grand Challenge Lecture - Energy Crisis: Developing New Materials - F Rosei

52:58
Presented by Professor Federico Rosei (University of Quebec). As the age of cheap fossil fuels comes to an end, humanity faces an energy crisis. Many alternative energy sources are being investigated and developed. The challenge is to replace fossil fuels on a short time scale with new energy sources that are economically viable and environmentally sustainable. In this lecture, Professor Rosei will present the general picture of the looming energy crisis and discuss some possible solutions. In particular, he will describe the use of advanced materials and nanotechnology for energy saving, energy storage and energy conversion. Professor Rosei and his colleagues’ research into nanoscale systems, surfaces and interfaces is driving the development of materials and devices with improved properties. Federico Rosei has held the Canada Research Chair in Nanostructured Organic and Inorganic Materials since 2003. He is Professor and Director of Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Énergie, Matériaux et Télécommunications, Varennes (QC). Professor Rosei has published over 160 articles in prestigious international journals, has been invited to speak at over 150 international conferences and has given 20 public lectures around the world. The ‘We Generation’: Raising Socially Responsible Children and Teens

01:24:14
Parents, carers and interested persons were invited to a presentation by 2014 Thinker in Residence, Dr Michael Ungar. Dr Ungar discussed how parents and carers can raise children to think ‘we’ in ‘me’-thinking times. He showed that children and teens, even while they push their parents away, are still wanting and needing physical, emotional and spiritual connections. Dr Ungar will offer practical suggestions about how to raise children to become competent, caring contributors to their families, schools and communities. Dr Ungar is a world-leading specialist in child and young people. His research has found that by shaping children and young people’s environments to provide a sense of belonging and cultural connection, resilience can be strengthened, leading to improved health and wellbeing.
Where Two or Three are Gathered: Transforming the Parish through Communities of Practice

01:16:18
Ministers in today’s parishes face a variety of challenges as they strive to create a context within which the faith is proclaimed, preached, taught, celebrated, and lived. Forming this kind of dynamic community requires that the adult believers embody maturity of faith and a spirit of evangelization. Using the concept of “community of practice,” this presentation sets out a new way to think about the life of the parish and a model for effectively leveraging and enhancing present parish dynamics and structures. Krakatoa Facts - Everything You NEED To Know! Every Eruption & Tsunami EVER. We Cover It ALL!

16:00
In this video we will cover every single known fact about Krakatoa and every record of it from the Javanese Book of Kings, which was written in 417 A.D. and documenting it's enormous eruption then, to the super volcano eruption Krakatoa unleashed in 535 AD which caused a world wide famine, crop shortage, and changed the weather pattern around the entire world. All the way up to the encounters humans had when visiting Krakatoa in the many centuries prior to 1883. P.S. This video is the compilation of my prior two videos of Part 1 and Part 2 for easier finding and viewing for those that haven't seen them. This also has a few extra added facts. We will then go over the events leading up to the Krakatoa Eruption of 1883, and the subsequent tsunami it unleashed which was double the strength of the 2018 Eruption and Tsunami. Krakatoa blew up entirely and descended into the depths of the ocean during this one. Where, silently, out of sight. It built up it's magma chambers once more, ready to descend to the surface of the Earth again. 40 Years Pass, and in 1927. A massive roar is heard from the ocean, as the now named Anak Krakatoa "Child of Krakatoa" made it's ascension back onto the surface of the Earth. Starting out as a tiny island barely visible, and growing every year by a phenomenal amount. It grew and had many, many minor eruptions through the 1900s and early 2000s. Until, as we all know, in 2018 it reached its critical level. And erupted. It was only half as strong as the 1883 eruption, which was a volcanic explosivity index of 6! (1 below a Super volcano, which is VEI 7 and 8). The 2018 was a volcanic explosivity index of 3 in comparison. After Anak Krakatoa erupted, a landslide sent over 160 acres of debris into the ocean, causing a giant tsunami, and sending it straight to the lands surrounding the epicenter of the eruption. The speed of this caught everyone off guard, and in a moments notice, waves crashed into the land, speeding their way inwards, swarming everything in its way. The tsunami was so strong it lifted buildings off their foundations and thrusted them kilometers (miles) inland from their original location. Before receding and showing the incredible scale of devestation. Costing millions of U.S. equivilent dollars of damage in next to no time. The poor citizens of Sumatra and Java didn't even have time to detect the Tsunami, yet alone be warned of it's approach. In this video, we will also cover why Krakatoa is so powerful, why the events of 2018, 1883, 535, and 417 are destined to repeat themselves. And how it differs from almost every other volcano on earth. Hint: The location of it (not the fact that it's in the water, but something else) is what gives Krakatoa it's intense and frequent eruptions, landslides, and tsunamis. Enjoy! Alot of work went into this short documentary! I hope you all learn something and get some great entertainment in the process. Volcanism, and geology is quite fascinating, at least to me. Understand how and why Krakatoa is different from say, a super volcano (which I am equally as fascinated and devote a large part of my content on) is a step out of familiarity and a quest into the unique nature of these types of disasters on Earth. With each one being different from one another. If you enjoyed this, hit that like button. We release videos daily. Leave a comment if you have a topic you'd like us to cover next. Who are we if our jobs, our houses, our furniture, and our spouses are all recommended to us by experts or algorithms. If we are the sum of our decisions, then what's left when those decisions have been handed over entirely to others? Sociologist Arlie Hochschild looks at the long-term consequences of a frictionless existence and the implications of replacing the community with a marketplace in favour of faster, lonelier lives. 2016 AAA Invited Session: COPAR AND THE RE-USE OF ANTHROPOLOGICAL ARCHIVES IN THE DIGITAL AGE

01:47:19
This panel brings together papers on anthropological data re-use in the digital era. Panelists will share new research as well as discussions from a Wenner-Gren sponsored workshop in June 2016, “Revitalizing CoPAR for the Digital Age.” In the 1990s, the Council for the Preservation of Anthropological Records (CoPAR) was founded to help “anthropologists, librarians, archivists, information specialists and others preserve and provide access to the record of human diversity and the history of the discipline.” Over the past 20 years, the field of Anthropology has changed dramatically, as have the records anthropologists produce. Today, the preservation and stewardship of anthropological records face new challenges as anthropologists create records in a wider range of formats, and as the re-use of these materials changes. Following on the conference’s theme of Evidence, Accident, Discovery, this panel discusses trends in re-uses of anthropological materials in digitized archival collections, and reflects on both unexpected uses of these materials and the ethical implications of digital anthropological data and their uses today.
