David Paul watch DP2 from KickStarter (Homage to iconic Seiko 6105)
Unboxing and first thoughts. https://www.facebook.com/groups/kickstarter.watches/ I absolutely love this watch, there is no question about that. Only thing I do not like is that straps are short. They are made for 20cm maximum wrist diameter and not for mine of 21cm. Now, that been said, we can go further with description. This is a pure and almost exact copy of legendary "Seiko 6105 Diver" and most of world wide reputation that Seiko find on Martin Sheen wrist in "Apocalypse Now" movie about Vietnam war. Actually, because the Seiko 6105 truly was a common choice of GIs during the conflict, (was available from the PX stores (retail stores found on United States military installations) for soldiers) and in a way started an entire trend for budget-priced oversized steel tool watches when they returned stateside. Developed by Seiko in the late 1960s, the large (44mm) asymmetrical watch boasted 150 meters of water resistance, a bi-directional bezel for dive timing and large swaths of luminescent material for high visibility underwater with double domed Hardlex and Seiko caliber 6105B, a 17 jewel full rotor automatic that runs at 21,600 bph. It is not hand windable, but the automatic winding mechanism is so efficient that one flick of the wrist will start it running from a dead stop. One nice touch that is not often found in Seiko divers (vintage or modern) is that this movement hacks, meaning the second hand stops when the crown is pulled out. Used extensively in the field by soldiers and frogmen, the 6105 developed a reputation as a no-nonsense timepiece for professional use, a reputation that has lasted through to this day and undoubtedly inspired countless diving watches in the subsequent decades. So, this is almost exact replica of that watch except of lug width. In original Seiko that was then usual 19mm, but on this watch is most common 20mm so there is no problem with strap change and I already change my strap to longer one and in nylon/leather combination of NATO green. DP2 watch use Seiko NH35a movement which is practically third generation of original movement ( 24 jewel full rotor automatic that runs at 21,600 bph, hand windable, diashock system, power reserve 41 hours, Bi-directional automatic winding). The case is made from solid 316L stainless steel. The brush finishing on the cushion-cut case is nice and close to original. The crown is at 4 o’clock and is protected by the bulging crown guard, but this one is screw in/out type and original was pull/push type with pin lock, but both are same size about 6.3mm wide, with shallow grooves covering the whole thing and six grooves giving relatively good grip. The glass is double AR coated sapphire, slightly domed, with a beveled circumference, giving the dial outer rim at certain angles shades of dark blue. The Dial is finished in anti-reflective black. Hour and minute hands are lume filled faceted steel baton style, while the second hand is a unique “stop light” style (as original) with lume filled holes at the tip. Large hands are painted with C3 Super-LumiNova. Quick set date is at three o'clock position. The DP2 watch is 200m water resistant and because of that suitable for swimming and snorkeling without any doubt. DP-2 comes with a limited warranty covering flaws in workmanship and materials for a period of ONE (1) year after the original purchase and everything came in leather watch roll. In the end, I have only one conclusion. This is a excellent and truly tribute to original Seiko 6015 Diver with few modern twitch and upgrade (NH35a movement & sapphire glass). I like it very much and only can recommend it. Thanks for reading and watching.

Takanakuy: Fistfighting in the Andes
Once a year around Christmas in the Peruvian Andes, the whole town gets together to dance, drink and beat the hell out of each other. Christmas festivities vary widely around the world, and are widely a steaming crock of boring shit. Ooh, Swedish girls wear a crown of candles the night before Chistmas? Please tell me more about this scintillating national cust-snzzzZZZZZZZZZ. In the Peruvian Andes, folks know how to celebrate the season right. What they do is, they put on a colorful ski-mask, dress up like Mad Max mountain bikers, tie a dead eagle to their heads, and get drunk and dance for about a week straight. Then, come Christmas morning, they all gather together in the middle of town and beat the baby bejesus out of each other. Now we're talking, right? The festival is called Takanakuy and its equal parts sporting event, indigenous display of hypermasculine defiance in the face of all the lilywhite metropolitan sissies in Lima, and makeshift judicial system. The province of Chumbivilcas, where Takanakuy takes place, has about three cops total and is a stomach-wrecking 10-hour drive through the mountains to the nearest courthouse. So if you've got a beef with a neighbor or someone's taken your girl or sheep, you don't go crying about it to some judge. You bury it away until Christmas, then get yourself all beered up and exact some Andean justice with your fists and feet. Guys, girls, little kids, old drunk men in high-waisted pants; everybody in town fights at Takanakuy. This year we decided to forego the annual family snoozefest and head into the mountains of Peru to test our mettle against the some of the hardiest people from one of the harshest environments in the Americas. We hope you like it, since it broke our mothers' hearts. Nigella Lawson in conversation with Annabel Crabb
With her feet firmly on the ground, and her finger in the mixing bowl, Nigella Lawson has charmed us with her approach to food and cooking. Based on the principle that food should be a simple pleasure to cook and to eat, her recipe books emphasise the importance of friends, family and celebration. At a time when many of the messages we get about food alternate between anxious exhortations to eat ‘clean’ and the technical wizardry of competitive cooking, her relaxed and realistic approach shows a different path, where food can be creative, a source of comfort and a joyful part of life. http://sydneyoperahouse.com/ideas Subscribe and find more videos from Ideas at the House: http://www.youtube.com/ideasatthehouse Get a new talk every week on our podcast: Audio - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/sydney-opera-house-ideas-at/id640445035 Video - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/sydney-opera-house-ideas-at/id640444896 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/IdeasAtTheHouse Twitter - https://twitter.com/ideasatthehouse

Hundreds of Occupy Sydney protesters have taken to the streets under the watchful eyes of a heavy police presence. People from all walks of life converged on Town Hall at midday on Saturday bearing banners with slogans like 'You can't eat money' and 'Stop police brutality'. The Occupy Sydney activists, who are part of a worldwide protest against corporate greed, have vowed to re-occupy Martin Place indefinitely, despite police assurances they will be removed at 4.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday. '99 per cent, 99 per cent, 99 per cent', protesters chanted as they gathered at Town Hall for speeches. Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) Sydney branch secretary Paul McAleer told the crowd they were part of 'the most inspirational movement of working people in the history of humanity'. 'It doesn't matter what country you live in or what union you belong to or what religion you are or what colour you are. 'The 99 per cent says we are together and we are not going to be exploited or repressed any longer,' he said to massive cheers. There was a significant police presence at the rally, with riot squad officers, mounted police and two police trucks on standby. NSW Police dropped their Supreme Court action against the protest on Friday after protesters agreed to change the route of the march. However, Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said officers would be watching the demonstration and would take 'reasonable action' if protesters failed to leave Martin Place at the agreed time of 4.30pm (AEDT). Occupy Sydney spokesman Ben Peterson told AAP the police response was 'disappointing'. 'We're very disappointed police have turned up with mobile holding cells, horses, riot squad just around the corner,' he said. 'If police try to move on a lawful public peaceful assembly, then that's a travesty on their part.' Last month, police were accused of using excessive force after 40 protesters were arrested in a dawn raid that ended the group's week-long protest in Martin Place. Occupy Sydney has maintained there is no such thing as an illegal public assembly. A decision will be made on Saturday afternoon on whether they should re-occupy Martin Place indefinitely, Mr Peterson said. 'It is perfectly within everyone's rights to assemble peacefully and in a public place and that's what we'll be doing,' he said. 'The last thing Occupy is about is violent confrontations. It's about having a public discourse for as long as possible, involving as many people as possible.' People from a broad range of unions and activist groups were represented at the rally, which was taking place in Martin Place from 2pm (AEDT). People from Stop the Northern Territory Intervention, the NSW Teachers Federation, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), Lock the Gate anti-CSG mining group and refugee support groups were all present. 'Who are we?' an Occupy Sydney spokeswoman asked the crowd. 'We are the workers, we are the indebted, we are the immigrants and the indigenous. We are homeless, we are the students, we are the unemployed, we are the under-represented people of the world. We are the 99 per cent. We are Occupy Sydney.' - 5 November 2011.

Human Rights, Populism and the Crisis of Meaning - Dr Waleed Aly
Dr Aly's presentation looks at how the grand narratives of politics have evolved to sideline human rights ideals, and why assertive forms of nationalism are so well placed to occupy the resultant vacuum. He argued that for human rights to regain their persuasive power, they need to rediscover a way to become enchanted: imbued with some politically compelling meaning. This lecture was hosted by Curtin University at the Annual Human Rights Lecture on 19 August 2017. Explore more: http://humanrights.curtin.edu.au/

Jennifer Davis: "Called Again" | Talks at Google
Called Again: An Afternoon Event with 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis In 2011, two-time Appalachian Trail thru-hiker Jennifer Pharr Davis wanted to test her limits. With the support of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of volunteers dubbed the "Pit Crew," Jen hiked, stumbled, and sometimes crawled the 2,181 mile A.T. in 46 days (an average of 47 miles per day), becoming the fastest person to hike the trail and the first woman to ever set the mark. And for that, she's been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR's Talk of the Nation, Guideposts Magazine, and the CBS Early Show. But Jen's story is not about records or numbers; it's about endurance, faith, and most of all, love. She will be speaking about the many challenges and lessons that present themselves along the trail, showing slides from over 12,000 miles of long-distance hiking which she has completed on six different continents. Jen will also be answering questions about her hiking exploits on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Colorado Trail, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Peru's Inca Trail, the Tour du Mont Blanc, Australia's Bibbulmun Track, Vermonts Long Trail, and others. After her presentation, she will be signing copies of her new book Called Again: A Story of Love and Triumph, which Kirkus Reviews has called "an inspired exploration of the meaning of commitment."

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)

Where Two or Three are Gathered: Transforming the Parish through Communities of Practice
Ministers in today’s parishes face a variety of challenges as they strive to create a context within which the faith is proclaimed, preached, taught, celebrated, and lived. Forming this kind of dynamic community requires that the adult believers embody maturity of faith and a spirit of evangelization. Using the concept of “community of practice,” this presentation sets out a new way to think about the life of the parish and a model for effectively leveraging and enhancing present parish dynamics and structures. Sponsored by the School of Theology and Ministry Jane E. Electricity is generated when the concentrated light is converted to heat, which drives a heat engine (usually a steam turbine) connected to an electrical power generator or powers a thermochemical reaction (experimental as of 2013).CSP had a world's total installed capacity of 4,815 MW in 2016, up from 354 MW in 2005. As of 2017, Spain accounted for almost half of the world's capacity, at 2,300 MW, making this country the world leader in CSP. The United States follows with 1,740 MW. Interest is also notable in North Africa and the Middle East, as well as India and China. The global market has been dominated by parabolic-trough plants, which accounted for 90% of CSP plants at one point. The largest CSP projects in the world are the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility (392 MW) in the United States (which uses solar power tower technology) and the Mojave Solar Project (354 MW) in the United States (which uses parabolic troughs). In most cases, CSP technologies currently cannot compete on price with photovoltaic solar panels, which have experienced huge growth in recent years due to falling prices and much smaller operating costs. CSP generally needs large amount of direct solar radiation, and its energy generation falls dramatically with cloud cover. This is in contrast with photovoltaics, which can produce electricity also from diffuse radiation. However, the advantage of CSP over PV is that as a thermal technology, running a conventional thermal power block, a CSP plant can store the heat of solar energy in molten salts, which enables these plants to continue to generate electricity whenever it is needed, whether day or night. This makes CSP a dispatchable form of solar. This is particularly valuable in places where there is already a high penetration of PV, such as California because an evening peak is being exacerbated as PV ramps down at sunset. CSP has other uses than electricity. Researchers are increasingly investigating solar thermal reactors for the production of solar fuels, making solar a fully transportable form of energy in the future. These researchers use the solar heat of CSP as a catalyst for thermochemistry to break apart molecules of H2O, to create hydrogen (H2) from solar energy with no carbon emissions. By splitting both H2O and CO2, other much-used hydrocarbons – for example, the jet fuel used to fly commercial airplanes – could also be created with solar energy rather than from fossil fuels. In 2017, CSP represented less than 2% of worldwide installed capacity of solar electricity plants. However, in recent years falling prices of CSP plants are making this technology competitive with other base-load power plants using fossil and nuclear fuel even in high moisture and dusty atmosphere at sea level, such as the United Arab Emirates. Base-load CSP tariff in the extremely dry Atacama region of Chile reached below ¢5.0/kWh in 2017 auctions.

How Corporate Optometry Works (And what Independents can do Next)
Ever wondered How Corporate Optometry works? And how can Independent Optometrists market themselves effectively? I recently had a chance to interview Mark Overton. He has the best understanding of Corporate Optometry of anyone I've heard! We cover Marketing and how you can position your practice for success. Here's one of my favourite quotes from the interview: "You don't have to win the national battle, as an optometrist, in Watsonia or in Melbourne or an optometrist in Cairns, Queensland, or an optometrist in Armidale, New South Wales. You only have to be the best in your market, in your local market, not the state market, not the capital market, not the Australian market."  -Mark Overton, Ideology Consulting Plus we cover more local marketing strategies and tactics. ----------------------------- Want to make contact with Mark? Dr Tim Flannery - Population, Climate & Australia: A View to 2050
http://www.jcipp.curtin.edu.au This seminar was presented by the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy (JCIPP), Curtin University on Thursday 24th November, 2011. The next 50 years will define the environmental health of the Earth into the indefinite future. Developed nations such as Australia need to decrease their greenhouse gas emissions this decade, and large developing economies by 2020-2030, to trigger less than 2 degrees of warming. Global population needs to peak by 2050 at around 8-9 billion to give humanity the best chance of a sustainable future. If these peaks do not eventuate the scene is set for a scenario of the sort Jared Diamond outlined in his book Collapse. What role can Australia play to do its part in achieving a sustainable future? What impact are Australia's current policies having, and how do policies need to change to leverage better outcomes? Key objectives and pathways for both population and climate issues will be outlined, and perspectives gathered from the activities of the Climate Commission will be used to build a case for action. About the Speaker: Dr Tim Flannery is one of Australia's leading thinkers and writers. An internationally acclaimed scientist, explorer and conservationist, he has published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His books include the landmark works The Future Eaters and The Weather Makers. In 2007 Tim Flannery co-founded and was appointed Chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council, a coalition of community, business, and political leaders who came together to confront climate change. In 2011 he was appointed Australia's Chief Climate Commissioner. Suspense: The Bride Vanishes / Till Death Do Us Part / Two Sharp Knives
Together with the Authorized version and the works of Shakespeare, the Book of Common Prayer has been one of the three fundamental underpinnings of modern English. As it has been in regular use for centuries, many phrases from its services have passed into the English language, either as deliberate quotations or as unconscious borrowings. They are used in non-liturgical ways. For example, many authors have used quotes from the prayer book as titles for their books. Some examples of well-known phrases from the Book of Common Prayer are: "Speak now or forever hold your peace" from the marriage liturgy. "Till death us do part", from the marriage liturgy. "Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust" from the funeral service. "From all the deceits of the world, the flesh, and the devil" from the litany. "Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest" from the collect for the second Sunday of Advent. "Evil liver" from the rubrics for Holy Communion. "All sorts and conditions of men" from the Order for Morning Prayer. "Peace in our time" from Morning Prayer, Versicles. The phrase "till death us do part" ("till death us depart" before 1662[5]) has been changed to "till death do us part" in some more recent prayer books, such as the 1962 Canadian Book of Common Prayer. References and allusions to Prayer Book services in the works of Shakespeare were tracked down and identified by Richmond Noble (Noble 1935, p. 82). Derision of the Prayer Book or its contents "in any interludes, plays, songs, rhymes, or by other open words" was a criminal offence under the 1559 Act of Uniformity,[6] and consequently Shakespeare avoids too direct reference; but Noble particularly identifies the reading of the Psalter according to the Great Bible version specified in the Prayer Book, as the biblical book generating the largest number of Biblical references in Shakespeare's plays. Noble found a total of 157 allusions to the Psalms in the plays of the First Folio, relating to 62 separate Psalms—all, save one, of which he linked to the version in the Psalter, rather than those in the Geneva Bible or Bishops' Bible. In addition, there are a small number of direct allusions to liturgical texts in the Prayer Book; e.g. Henry VIII 3:2 where Wolsey states "Vain Pomp and Glory of this World, I hate ye!", a clear reference to the rite of Public Baptism; where the Godparents are asked "Doest thou forsake the vaine pompe and glory of the worlde..?" More recently, P.D. James used phrases from the Book of Common Prayer and made them into bestselling titles—Devices and Desires and The Children of Men, while Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 film Children of Men placed the phrase onto cinema marquees worldwide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Common_Prayer#Literary_influence

Calling All Cars: Desperate Choices / Perfumed Cigarette Lighter / Man Overboard
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role. The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station. Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker "became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation". In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay. Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel. The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous "cold case", and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) "represent the choices ahead for the LAPD": assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a "straight arrow" approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAPD
