During a trip to San Pedro de Atacama, in the north of Chile, I came across some mining trucks being transported to a mining centre near Calama. The first one was huge, but the second one, it was enormous. Please pay attention that the first truck is being carried on a specaill trailler pulled by one "normal" truck, but the second, is pulled by two trucks. This was June 2012

SANTIAGO - The Puyehue volcano in southern Chile erupted on Saturday after half a century of sleep, forcing the evacuation of 3,500 people and generating a giant cloud of ash that reached neighboring Argentina. The National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) of Chile has announced that the Puyehue erupted in the volcanic complex Caulle cord, caused "an explosion that produces a high gas column height of 10 km about ". The government ordered in the afternoon the evacuation of some 3,500 people residing in over twenty towns near the volcano, located 870 km south of Santiago, near the Argentine border. Initially, some 600 people were evacuated in the morning as a precautionary measure after an initial warning SERNAGEOMIN, warning of strong seismic activity in the region, prior to a possible eruption. A dozen earthquakes of medium intensity, magnitude 4 were recorded in a few hours and a hundred small instensité. The National Emergency Office (Onemi) announced that at 3:15 p.m. (7:15 p.m. GMT), "the alert level Volcanic Geology Department has been elevated to 6 (on a scale of 8) corresponding to a moderate eruption. "We can see the mouth of the volcano, a column of smoke and (...) we perceive a strong smell of sulfur," said the prefect of the region of Los Rios Juan Andres Varas, quoted by media chilena, whose website the Mercurio. In neighboring Argentina, in the city of Bariloche, Landmark mountain located 100 km east of Puyehue, the thick cloud of ash from the eruption forced to close the airport. Bariloche is known in the afternoon "high ash fall, as if it was snow," said the chain of communication TN secretary of the city, Carlos Hidalgo. "The city is completely gray. Bariloche authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and close doors and windows. Chile-Argentina border to Cardenal Samore station was closed. The Chilean Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said that emergency measures to protect the population could be "short term". "We believe that adequate measures were taken, and we expect that things are going relatively well," he added. In the area of the volcano by the way, people "feel that the risk is not close" because of wind direction to the east and delay the evacuation of their homes, told the press the Vice- Chilean Interior Minister Rodrigo Ubilla. Puyehue volcano, 2,240 meters above sea level, belongs to the volcanic complex Caulle cord in the Cordillera of the Andes. Its last major eruption dates back to 1960, after the terrible earthquake of magnitude 9.5 Valdivia, who had died 5700 in Chile. The entry into operation of Puyehue is the latest in a series of dense volcanic alert in southern Chile in recent years. In 2008, the eruption of Chaiten, 1,300 km from Santiago, had forced the evacuation of the city of the same name, whose streets were covered with a layer of ash several tens of centimeters. Already the rain of ash had reached Bariloche. Also in 2008, and in 2009, the Llaima volcano, one of the most active in Chile and 700 km from Santiago, had forced the evacuation of dozens of residents of nearby towns and a few tourists. Contribute to the Project: http://igeo.tv/contribuye-al-proyecto/ The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013. Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata). The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit. As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010. The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually. The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235 ft (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft. The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua, and it has 19,500 employees. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. The 2006 production was 610,800 tonnes of copper; 58,474,392 grams of gold; and 174,458,971 grams of silver. 'Pilgrimage of Thanks' brings the formerly trapped men to religious sites of Israel as well as tourist spots and a meeting with the president. After two months trapped underground in a collapsed mine as the world looked on in horror, 25 of the 33 rescued Chilean miners accepted the gift of a trip to Israel. The Israeli Ministry of Tourism paid for the miners, along with their spouses or girlfriends, to come for a tour of the religious sites and famous sightseeing spots in the Holy Land. From playing in Dead Sea mud to walking along the Via Dolorosa and touring Christian sites such as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Garden Tomb, the Catholic group got the VIP treatment. In welcoming them to his residence, President Shimon Peres recited the traditional prayer of thanksgiving after a situation of great danger -- particularly appropriate for a journey that had become known as a Pilgrimage of Thanksgiving

Strong aftershocks rippled through Chile on Thursday after a magnitude 8.3 earthquake that killed at least eight people and slammed powerful waves into coastal towns, forcing more than a million people from their homes. After the powerful quake hit on Wednesday evening, the government ordered evacuations from coastal areas to avoid a repeat of a quake disaster in 2010 when authorities were slow to warn of a tsunami that killed hundreds. As the risk subsided, the government lifted its tsunami warning on Thursday morning. The quake and heavy waves afterward caused flooding in coastal towns, damaged buildings and knocked out power in the worst hit areas of central Chile and shook buildings in the capital city of Santiago about 280 kilometers (175 miles) to the south. The port of Coquimbo suffered major damage in the quake, which was the strongest in the world this year, Interior Minister Jorge Burgos told a news conference. President Michelle Bachelet said she planned to travel to the areas worst affected by the quake, the biggest to hit the country since 2010. "Once again we're having to deal with another harsh blow from nature," she said in a televised statement. Chile is the world's top copper producer and operations were suspended at two big copper mines. Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange rose to two-month highs in early Asian trading on worries about supply disruptions. The quake was felt as far away as Buenos Aires in Argentina. "It's been awful. We ran out of the house with our grandchildren and now we are on a hill hoping it will be over soon," said Maria Angelica Leiva from the coastal town of Navidad. "It is all very dark, and we just hope the sea hasn't reached our house," she said. Tsunami advisories were issued for parts of South America, Hawaii, California and French Polynesia, although waves were generally expected to be small. As far away as New Zealand, authorities warned of "unusually strong currents" and urged residents in eastern coastal areas to stay out of the water and off beaches. Aftershocks felt Dozens of strong aftershocks continued to rattle central Chile, a largely agricultural region south of the mining belt, on Thursday. A 26-year-old woman was killed by a collapsing wall in Illapel, near the quake epicenter. Another person died from a heart attack in Santiago, according to media reports. Most buildings in Illapel had stayed standing, residents said. Quake-prone Chile has strict building regulations that limit potential damage, so newer buildings are able to withstand even strong quakes. Many homes in Illapel and surrounding areas are simple, adobe houses and are more prone to damage. The brunt of the damage was borne by coastal areas where houses and fishing-boats were smashed by waves. The coastal town of Coquimbo was hit by waves of up to 4.5 meters (15 feet) after the earthquake, Chile's navy said. "We're going through a really grave situation with the tsunami. We have residential neighborhoods that have flooded. The ocean has reached the downtown area," said Coquimbo Mayor Cristian Galleguillos. Residents reported looting of evacuated houses in Los Vilos, another seaside town, its mayor said. Chile is due to celebrate its national holiday on Friday, but roads were cut off and public transport canceled between Santiago and the north, local media reported. The quake is the latest natural disaster to roil mining in Chile, which accounts for a third of global copper output. Northern Chile was hit by severe floods earlier this year, while a volcanic eruption caused problems for residents in the south. State copper miner Codelco said it had suspended mining operations at its Andina mine but had restarted operations at its Ventanas smelter after evacuating workers there. Antofagasta said it had halted operations at its Los Pelambres copper mine and would wait until daybreak to assess damage. Chile runs along a highly seismic and volcanic zone where tectonic plates meet and often experiences earthquakes. In 2014, an 8.2-magnitude quake struck near the northern city of Iquique. In 2010 an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in central-southern Chile triggered a massive tsunami, and more than 500 people were killed. In the hours after that quake, President Bachelet and other government officials misjudged the extent of damage and declined offers of international aid. That delayed the flow of assistance to disaster areas, leaving many survivors feeling they had been abandoned by the government. Bachelet's government was also slow to prevent looting following the quake. Its failings hit her high approval ratings at the end of her presidential term, although she remained popular and was elected again in 2013.

HEADLINE: Major earthquake strikes Chile --------------------------------------- CAPTION: A major earthquake struck northern Chile on Wednesday, sending terrified residents fleeing into streets cut by toppled power lines. Authorities and residents reported damage and and at least 20 injured, but no deaths. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the magnitude at 7.7. (Nov 14) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:hotel in Antofagasta] The earthquake that struck northern Chile Wednesday morning sent the portico of a hotel crashing down on top of cars. But scenes of damage were rare. The U-S Geological Survey says the seven-point-seven magnitude quake struck about 800 miles north of Santiago--the capital of Chile. [Notes:people walking/running in the streets] The mid-morning earthquake sent many people into the streets. It was also felt in neighboring Bolivia and Peru. Officials say reports of injuries are limited. Geologists say that's due to the fact that the center of the earthquake was about 37 miles below the surface, which is relatively deep. [Notes:school children] In some areas, schools, hospitals and other buildings were evacuated. [Notes:dust and rocks from mine] Northern Chile is home to some of the region's largest copper mines. Mine officials say there were minor landslides, but they hadn't affected operations. Chile is part of the earthquake-prone Pacific Rim of Fire. More than 30-thousand people have died in earthquakes in the last century. Chile Earthquake 8 0 Giant Earthquake in Chile Tsunami Warning, A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off Chile's northern coast Tuesday night, and officials ordered an evacuation of coastal areas before an expected tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the tremor, which also shook buildings in parts of nearby Peru and Bolivia. The USGS initially reported the quake at 8.0, but later upgraded the magnitude. It said the quake struck 99 kilometres northwest of the Chilean mining port city of Iquique at 8:46 p.m., hitting a region that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks. Waves measuring almost 2 meters already were striking cities on the coast, and authorities said a tsunami was expected to come ashore later. Local TV images showed residents evacuating calmly. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for all of Latin America's Pacific coast, while Chile's ONEMI emergency office said a large tsunami wave was expected to hit the island of Juan Fernandez out in the Pacific just before midnight local time. ONEMI also said late on Tuesday that landslides were partially blocking some roads and highways, and local radio stations said power went out in Iquique, but the government said it had no reports of deaths or injuries. Iquique is a key copper exporting port, close to Chile's main copper mines. State-owned miner Codelco reported no harm to its workers or mines, and said its operations in northern Chile were normal. An official at Peru's civil defence office said evacuations were underway on that country's coast. The official, who did not give her name, said there were no immediate reports of damage. Police officer Alejandro Rosado in a Tacna, a Peruvian town near the coast, said no damage or injuries had been reported there. Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. A magnitude-8.8 quake and ensuing tsunami in central Chile in 2010 killed more than 500 people, destroyed 220,000 homes, and washed away docks, river fronts and seaside resorts. The strongest earthquake ever recorded on Earth also happened in Chile — a magnitude-9.5 tremor in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people.
