The Field Service Diesel Fitter: Luke's Story

02:30
After Luke Fleming completed Year 12 he started a career as a development coach for the Australian Rugby League and, following this, spent some years as a customs officer. His dream, however, had always been to have a career in the automotive industry. It was not until the age of 27 that Luke made the career switch to an Australian Apprenticeship, starting a Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology (Heavy Vehicle Mobile Equipment) with Hastings Deering. Since completing his Australian Apprenticeship, Luke is employed as a Field Service Diesel Fitter for the Hastings Deering Caterpillar dealership. He enjoys travelling to different parts of the Northern Territory to diagnose, correct and maintain heavy vehicle equipment. Luke was the winner of the 2012 NT Austin Ashe Apprentice of the Year Award and was a finalist the same year at the Australian Training Awards. No.42: Seguin wins third gold, Australia dominate

00:28
With Australia topping the sport’s medals table at Rio 2016, France’s Damien Seguin taking his second Paralympic gold after 12 years and Canadian Paul Tingley winning his third medal, sailing left some memorable moments at September’s Paralympic Games. The competitions come in at No. 42 in the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Top 50 Moments. The 2.4m Norlin OD one-person keelboat, the SKUD28 two-person keelboat and the Sonar three-person keelboat were the three classes contested at the beautiful Marina da Gloria, in the shadow of the Sugar Loaf and Corcovado mountains, in Rio. After 12 years, Frenchman Damien Seguin was crowned Paralympic champion again when he crossed the finish line in fourth place in the last race of the 2.4m Norlin OD. He finished ahead of Great Britain’s London 2012 champion Helena Lucas, the only sailor who could mathematically beat him. Seguin, who also won silver at Beijing 2008, was followed by Australia’s Matthew Bugg, who claimed silver thanks to a first place in the final race, demoting Lucas to third. “I am just happy as I have worked a lot since my fourth place in London 2012. I was sure I could do it, and I did,” said Seguin. “I am a competitor, so I always go for first place. My start to the regatta was not very good, but every day I improved my racing. I always say that the regatta is 11 races, not 10. And by the 11th race I got to first overall. “I have an association in France to encourage people with impairment to go sailing and they came to Rio this week. They were at the beach every day to support me. It was amazing.” Australia’s Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch were the overwhelming champions in the SKUD18 class, successfully defending their London 2012 title and confirming their status as the world’s best pair after winning two world titles in 2014 and 2015, and multiple World Cups together. They ended first in eight of the ten races to finish the regatta with only 12 points, far ahead of Canada’s Jackie Gay and John McRoberts, who claimed silver with 34. Great Britain’s Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell completed the podium with 36. “We can adapt to everything, we can deal with craziness and deal with instability and come out on top,” said Fitzgibbon. Tesch, who competed in wheelchair basketball over five Paralympic Games between 1992-2008, added: “It is a lovely reward for lots of hard work. The first gold gave me an incredible sense of satisfaction, after chasing it for 24 years...The second was more a joyful celebration of everything! “Rio 2016 was a hugely tough regatta, with incredibly testing conditions. But Daniel [Fitzgibbon] and I combined our training and experience to minimise errors and perform at our absolute best.” Colin Harrinson, Jonathan Harris and Russell Boaden added a second gold to Australia’s sailing medal haul in the Sonar, finishing first in the regatta with 26 points. There were followed by USA’s Rick Doerr, Hugh Freund and Brad Kendell (44) and Canada’s Paul Tingley, Scott Lutes and Logan Campbell (51). Fresh from becoming Paralympic champion, Harrinson said he was feeling: “Just elation. It has been a long time coming and it feels great to get there. There is a lot of emotion.” For Canada’s Tingley, it was his third time on the podium. The 46-year-old has been competing in the sport since its introduction to the Paralympic programme at Sydney 2000, where he took bronze in the Sonar. Tingley could not medal in Athens, Greece, in 2004 but switched to the 2.4m Norlin OD to claim his first and only Paralympic title at Beijing 2008. He could not defend the title in London finishing fifth. After graduating Ilia became involved with a collective called The Zoo Illustrative Group before discovering her feet in mural painting. Meeting Geoff Pryor and being allowed to illustrate for the Canberra Times on occasion, was a highlight for Ilia, although her meandering mind wasn’t quite ready for the rigors of deadlines. Zeminar Presents Jack Kavanagh | Fearless Like a Child

17:16
Last November Zeminar and Credit Union brought Jack Kavanagh and Rory Stories to a packed and excited audience at The RDS in November and for 20 minutes Jack held the crowd in the palm of his hand as he recounted his life before and after the spinal injury that changed his life. The power of this experience and more importantly, how Jack reacted to it, resonated deeply with the young attendees, their teachers and the Zeminar team. A spinal injury in 2012 left Jack Kavanagh paralysed, at age 20, from the chest down with limited use of his arms and hands. Defying the odds, Jack returned to Trinity College Dublin only one year after his injury where he completed his studies and qualified as a Pharmacist in 2018. Jack draws on the personal challenges he has faced in overcoming and thriving in the face of the perceived obstacles of a spinal cord injury. He challenges people to think outside the box, to face challenges and adapt by realizing they have the power to decide how to respond to life circumstances, by implementing simple strategies to triumph over adversity. Jack advocates for focusing only on impressing oneself and for each of us to become our own heroes. Zeminar Presents is the world's first talk series built exclusively for Generation Z and their teachers & parents. Kerry was originally a vet and then went onto cartooning and illustrating books. She has a wonderful Philosophy towards life and exudes a great personal energy. Based in Tasmania, Kerry began painting with acrylics several years ago in order to explore, experiment, and throw out all of the "shoulds" to see what happened. Her work can be found at regular exhibitions. Her actual temporary gallery, the Little Firefly, pops up from time to time in different locations. In 1973, after studying zoology in Toronto, Kerry ventured to Australia with a guitar and a backpack, got a shock eating Vegemite and became Kerry Millard, a rural veterinarian. Seven moves and a baby or two later saw her reach Sydney in 1984 where she gave birth again and became an Australian. Not having quite enough excitement with three kids under four she brought home a wacky dog and ended up taking him to a dog training club to help him get his act together. She drew some cartoons for their newsletter which people seemed to like, and accidentally fell into being an award-winning cartoonist drawing for publications including The Sydney Morning Herald and Medical Observer, and twice being voted Best Single Gag Cartoon Artist by the Australian Cartoonists' Association. Kerry's paintings have been described as joyful, whimsical, full of life and energy, colourful, honest, and thought provoking. Each piece is a moment captured from her life in a bold and refreshing exploration. Her trademark is colour and invention, her gift is to distill subjects down to their simplest essence, in an almost childlike manner. "I use the emotions evoked by colours and their relationships as my tools when creating a work. My approach could be called “mad scientist at preschool” where an insatiable curiosity and interest in exploration and discovery meet a deliberate abandonment to respond to the process itself and the work as it unfolds, turning rules, methods, and even canvases upside down." - Kerry Thompson You can contact the artist about their art tips or art techniques directly via their website http://www.kerrythompsonsgallery.com/ The Colour In Your Life TV series is an art show that takes you into the everyday studios of artists from around the world. While in the studio they share their individual techniques with the viewer in a relaxed atmosphere with a delightfully Australian host and fellow artist Graeme Stevenson. Supermarkets have a stranglehold and are squeezing the life out of banana workers and farmers. Join us to Make Fruit Fair – NOW! https://www.makefruitfair.org/ A handful of supermarket chains dominate the European retail market. They are the gatekeepers between European consumers and suppliers from around the world. They abuse their buyer power and dictate prices by squeezing suppliers to keep costs extremely low. Farmers have no guarantees about their payment. Workers are often forced to work long hours, for low pay in degrading conditions, exposed to harmful agrochemicals. These conditions can be changed! Show your support and help to empower workers and farmers. Sign our petition for fair tropical fruits: https://www.makefruitfair.org/

--- Rugby Girls; Imagine being told you can't keep playing your favourite sport because of your gender. Well that's what happens to some female junior rugby players when they hit 12 years old. Up until then, girls can play in boys teams. But in some states there's no competition they're allowed to play in after that. --- 5 DOLLAR NOTE; The 5 dollar note is getting a makeover to incorporate new security features and a new design. --- OIL DRILLING; A fight is currently going on over the Great Australian Bight. That's the bit of ocean near the arch in the middle of Australia. Oil company BP has asked to drill oil wells there. But environmentalists are trying hard to stop it. --- REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS; Thousands of refugees have fled Syria over the past year. Some of them have come to Australia. So next we're going to take a look at what a refugee actually is and how they're different to the thousands of migrants that come here to live too. --- KIDS IN SYRIA; Over the past couple of weeks a picture of a young Syrian boy who'd just survived a bombing spread across the world. The video was pretty confronting to see which is why we're not going to show it to you here on BtN. But it made a lot of people worry about the kids in Syria and the dangers they face each and every day.
