It's vital that all surfaces are properly prepared before painting to ensure that the finish is long lasting and looks professional. Learn how to prepare a room for painting with this step by step guide from one of our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/gyk9wO For more Wickes videos click here: http://po.st/xMeTiM Before you begin painting ensure: - All surfaces are completely free of grease and dust. - Any cracks or holes that need to be filled are filled (for more info on how to repair cracks and holes, see our tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV-FK3QERPg) - Flaky plaster, peeling paint and wallpaper are removed. - All furniture is removed from the room if possible, or moved into the centre of the room and covered to protect them from paint. - Floors are protected with suitable protective sheets. How to prepare plastered walls: - If the surface you’re planning to paint is freshly plastered, ensure that it’s completely dry before you begin preparing the surface. - Fresh plaster needs priming before you can paint on it, this enables paint to cover the wall properly. - Buy specialist paint for new plaster, check manufacturer's instructions for the amount of coats, or else you can do two coats of ‘mist coat’ – which is watered down emulsion. 60% paint to 40% water. After the mist coats you will need two top coats. How to prepare painted walls: - Ensure any holes, cracks or gaps are filled. - For hairline cracks you can use Wickes base coat to fill in these kinds of blemishes. - If there are larger cracks you will need to do the following: 1. Wash the area with sugar soap. 2. Apply Wickes Quick Drying Filler to your scraper then work it into the hole or crack to make sure that it fills the hole completely (scrape off any excess as you go). 3. Allow the filler to dry completely. 4. Sand down the surface with fine grade sandpaper (once you’ve filled all the holes and sanded the filler, sand any areas where the paint is flaking). 5. Brush all surfaces clean of dust and residue from the sanding process. How to remove wallpaper: Although you can paint over wallpaper, the best finish is obtained by stripping the paper back either manually or with chemicals to the plaster before re-painting. Score, Soak and Strip 1. Lightly score the paper, being careful not to damage the underlying plaster. 2. Soak the paper using a sponge and hot water. 3. Leave it to soak for five minutes, then start working your wallpaper stripper into the scores and scrape the paper off the plaster wall behind. Chemical Stripper If the wallpaper is not peeling off easily, you can use a chemical wall paper remover. Check manufacturer's instructions for mixing. Allow time for the chemical to soak in following the manufacturer's instructions. Then strip the wallpaper. Steam Stripper If you are working on a large area, you could try using a steam stripper: 1. Fill the tank with water, switch it on, and hold the plate against the area of the wallpaper that you’re trying to strip. 2. Once the steam has penetrated the paper, strip the paper using a wall paper stripper and the paper should come off easily (don’t leave it on one area for too long as it can damage the underlying plaster). If any areas are still not stripping easily, re-steam and try again. Bear in mind that this device uses scalding hot steam, so wear appropriate clothing and take sensible precautions to prevent yourself getting scalded. With the paper removed, clean the area with sugar soap. In this tutorial, our Wickes expert will show you how to paint interior woodwork and give you the help and advice needed to get a good finish. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/OvkPe7For more Wickes videos click here: http://po.st/BLYHbr Ensure your woodwork is already prepped for painting by watching our 'How to Prepare Interior Woodwork for Painting' here: http://po.st/XSXmjO Starting with the windows, apply masking tape to the window pane and mask or remove any fittings, such as locks, latches or hinges. Also remember to keep your windows open whilst you paint to make sure you do not seal them shut. Now you can add your undercoat to the woodwork. Start by painting the frames and sills with a suitable wood undercoat. Be sure to use a small brush for windows. If you're also painting the walls, it's best to do the undercoat on all woodwork before doing the top coat on the walls. In the same way, mask off areas you wish to protect and apply the undercoat to skirting boards, architraves and doors. When doing the skirting boards take particular care to protect your floor. It's worth putting down masking tape and attaching your protective sheets. Then apply undercoat to the architraves and doors'. Clean your brushes using water for water based paints or white spirit for oil based paints. Now you can let the undercoat dry, and be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions. Once the undercoat is dry, you are ready to apply the top coats. It's best to put two coats on woodwork for a longer lasting and protective finish. We would recommend a water based product, as they are quick drying, don't smell like solvent based paints and the white options don't yellow. In this how to, we're using gloss paint as our top coat which will give a shiny finish. You can opt for a satin, eggshell or matt finish. But it's all down to personal preference. As with the undercoat it’s best to start with the windows, followed by the skirting boards, then the architraves and doors. Interior woodwork paint tends to be thicker than emulsion so it has a tendency to slowly drip if too much is applied at once. Be mindful of this as you paint and don't overload the brush. Use a suitably sized brush and take your time with any edges that meet your painted walls. Certain top coats for wood, especially oil based paints are harder to wipe off surfaces if you make a mistake. But don't worry, if it does not wipe clean, you can always touch it up with emulsion when you've finished. Wait for the first coat to fully dry before applying the second coat with the same process. Once again be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions for dying times. Now all that is left is to let the last coat dry and carefully remove any masking tape and replace any fixtures or fittings. A complete walk through of all the steps you need to take in order to obtain a really good paint finish on MDF. There are two ways you can paint MDF: OPTION 1 - the complete process - Apply an MDF Primer - Sand lightly - Vacuum the dust up and wipe down with a rag dipped in white spirit, to degrease the surface - Apply a very thin layer of wood filler to the edges, and sand down - Apply an Undercoat - Appy a Top Coat Whilst the best approach to ensure a really decent finish, this is going to take a very long time - something most of us don't have, so I have always taken a slightly simpler approach to painting MDF: OPTION 2 - the way I PAINT MDF! - Apply a quick dry wood primer undercoat - Sand the edges to smooth out the end grain - Apply a second coat to the edges (not essential) - Apply two coats of Satin/ Gloss, again, lightly sanding the edges between each coat For a great resource on painting MDF, and more generally, take a look at DIY Doctor http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/mdf.htm In Today's Toolkit: - Sand paper (120 grade or finer) and sanding/ wood block - Face mask I use this one https://goo.gl/UwdfHD £12.99/ $16.14 although there are cheaper ones on the market - If you are going to use an MDF primer you should find these in all major hardware / DIY stores. Examples include https://goo.gl/N0BBvn from Screwfix (£10.80/ $13.48 per litre) https://goo.gl/Wf4OkP Amazon (£14.50/ $18.10 for 750ml) - Quick dry primer undercoat - there are so many different brands on the market. They all do a similar job, although I usually use Johnstone's Joncryl Acrylic Primer Undercoat. In today's video I use ARMSTEAD Wood Primer Undercoat https://goo.gl/XqtrM1 (£10.28/£12.83 per litre) - Mini roller with mohair roller sleeve (you can use a larger roller if you're painting larger areas - Paint brush for painting in hard to reach areas, and the edges - Johnstone's water based Satin top coat - purchased from my local Johnstone's Decorators Centre SUBSCRIBE - you can subscribe to my Channel here: http://www.youtube.com/c/CharlieDIYite LET'S CONNECT! A solid floor can often be un-level, but before a floor covering is applied (especially tiles) it is often necessary to level the floor. Here we level a very uneven concrete floor using floor levelling compound, which is mixed with cold, clean water. It's worth investing in a Spiked Aeration Roller to roll the floor once the compound has been applied as this will prevent any air bubbles from ruining the finish. Brought to you by http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/forum1/index.php If your floor is damp, you will need to tank the floor first which can be seen here- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gx8ck0OROo

http://www.homerepairtutor.com/how-to-paint-a-wall-and-get-straight-lines How to paint a wall and get straight lines between two dissimilar paint colors, that's the question. Hey Friends, this is Jeff from Home Repair Tutor. In today's brand new episode, you'll see the BEST way to get straight lines every time when painting walls of different colors. You can use Frog Tape and clear silicone caulk to get a pro look every time. So, if you need to paint lines on a wall or a straight line between a red wall and white wall or achieve a straight line between a wall & baseboard/door casings without the paint bleeding through the painter's tape then this method is what you've been looking for. I have an orange dining room and neutral kitchen yet got perfect transition lines between the two walls You'll need these items for perfectly straight transition line: 1. Frog Tape 2. Clear Silicone Caulk 3. Paint roller 4. or Paint brush Apply the Frog tape to whichever surface you'd like to protect. Then apply the silicone caulk to the Frog Tape where it meets up with the wall. Paint your wall then immediately pull off the Frog Tape and silicone caulk. DON'T let the silicone caulk dry, that's the trick. Step back and admire your pro look and submit your pics to HGTV!!! This is my first mirror install - hope it won't come off :D I used mirrow Mastic (glue). I think it is best to apply this mastic straight to a sheetrock. but we have new fresh paint which should be good. If you have lose paint and weak walls do not add mastic on your walls it will come off .. Instructions if you wanna be perfect not like me messy :D Things You'll Need Mirror tape measure level caulk gun mirror mastic (caulk tube type) mirror hanging clips (1 pack) 8' 1x4 piece of wood safety gloves safety glasses Suggest Edits 1 The first thing you want to do is measure the wall you want to install the mirror on. Measure the overall length and width so that you have an idea how large the area of you wall will be. To center the mirror on the wall, it helps to draw an "x" lightly on the wall from corner to corner and use the midpoint as your starting center for measuring the mirror area. This will also help you to determine if you will be hanging the mirror horizontally or vertically. 2 Go to your local home improvement center or glass center and check out the selection of mirrors that they have in stock. Mirrors come in all kinds of thicknesses, lengths, height, and cuts. You can get a stock mirror to fit your dimensions, or have a mirror cut to length for you. If you have a vehicle large enough to transport it, use moving blankets to wrap it up and not break it, or have it delivered. 3 While you are at your local home improvement center or glass center, purchase a caulk tube of Mirror Mastic. Mirror Mastic is a special caulk glue formulated specifically for sticking a glass mirror to walls. Get the kind that you can use with a caulk-gun as it is easier to apply to the wall and mirror. 4 When you get home with your mirror, clean the surface of the wall you will be installing the mirror on with a mild detergent a towel and water. 5 After you wash the wall, be sure to dry it very thoroughly so that there is no water left behind. This newly cleaned and dry wall will ensure that the mirror mastic will adhere well and will prevent the mirror from falling off of the wall. 6 Now you are almost ready to apply your mirror to the wall. If you have a small mirror that you can handle by yourself, move on to the next step - if you have a very large mirror that is heavy and requires help - read this step. When applying a large mirror, you want to build a temporary mount on your wall. Take a 2"x4" piece of wood that is no shorter than 18" and screw it into the wall right below the line for the bottom of your mirror. Be sure to screw both ends of the 2"x4" into the studs of the wall, as the mirror weight will rip it right out of the drywall and shatter your mirror. This will allow you to rest your mirror on the 2"x4" when positioning it into place. 7 Now that your mirror is ready to be glued onto the wall, place your mirror on the wall where you would like to have it installed when complete. Take your mirror clips and screw them into the wall to hold your mirror in place. 8 Now take a pencil and outline the mirror on the wall. 9 Now remove the mirror clips and remove the mirror from the wall. If you used a 2"x4" - leave it on the wall. 10 Take your caulk-gun and apply the mirror mastic to the wall in a zig-zag fashion within the outline that you drew of the mirror on the wall. Try to stay within an inch inside of your outline 11 Also apply the rest of the mirror mastic to the back of the mirror in a zig-zag fashion. Try to keep the mastic within two inches of the edges of the mirror. 12 Now, put your mirror back on the wall and line it up inside the outline you drew in Step 8. Lightly press the center of the mirror against the wall to compress the mastic and stick the mirror to the wall. Now gently push all of the sides of the mirror against the wall as well to make sure that the mirror is flat and sticking against the wall. 13 You should not have any mastic that spread out behind the mirror, but if you did, clean it off and clean it off your mirror. 14 Reinstall your mirror clips as they will ensure that the mirror is being held in place while the mastic dries. Allow the mirror mastic to dry for at least 24 hours. 15 Remove the mirror clips, remove the 2"x4" piece of wood if you had to use one to support your mirror. 16 Clean your mirror with a household mirror cleaner and you are all done!

How to close gaps between vinyl planks? This tutorial guides you through the process. Find out more at http://www.quick-step.co.uk/en-gb/frequently-asked-questions/vinyl The planks are made from synthetic materials and are therefore sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Major differences in temperature may cause the planks to shrink or expand. This creates gaps at the joints. To prevent this problem, we recommend keeping the temperature in your room between 18 and 30°C. If gaps nevertheless occur between the planks, you can solve this as follows. First, here is the easy solution: Sometimes just kicking the planks back into position with your foot will do the trick. If that doesn’t work, you can try it using a block of wood that you attach to the plank near the opening with double-sided tape. Carefully tap against it using a hammer until the gap has closed entirely and repeat the process for any new gaps that occur. Problem solved! Do you need more tips? FILM DESCRIPTION: Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts. Floor screed was a family DIY project. It measured 5.3 x 3.5 x 75mm thick. It was 4/6 of flooring grit and 1 of cement cast over underfloor heating pipes laid on 100mm Insulation. We had 40mm insulation around the outside wall cut level with the existing floor, this gave us a level all round. The existing floor was out of level and not flat. The screed was to be covered with laminated flooring. This is how we did it.

The materials are mixed into a slurry and are then thrown at the working surface with a trowel or scoop. The idea is to maintain an even spread, free from lumps, ridges or runs and without missing any background. Roughcasting incorporates the stones in the mix whereas pebbledashing adds them on top. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica Eleventh Edition, roughcast used to be a widespread exterior coating given to the walls of common dwellings and outbuildings, but it is now frequently employed for decorative effect on country houses, especially those built using timber framing. Variety can be obtained on the surface of the wall by small pebbles of different colours, and in the Tudor period fragments of glass were sometimes embedd
