Tank leaching is usually differentiated from vat leaching on the following factors: 1. In tank leaching the material is ground sufficiently fine to form a slurry or pulp, which can flow under gravity or when pumped. In vat leaching typically a coarser material is placed in the vat for leaching, this reduces the cost of size reduction; 2. Tanks are typically equipped with agitators, baffles, gas introduction equipment designed to maintain the solids in suspension in the slurry, and achieve leaching. Vats usually do not contain much internal equipment, except for agitators. 3. Tank leaching is typically continuous, while vat leaching is operated in a batch fashion, this is not always the case, and commercial processes using continuous vat leaching have been tested; 4. Typically the retention time required for vat leaching is more than that for tank leaching to achieve the same percentage of recovery of the valuable material being leached; In a tank leach the slurry is moved, while in a vat leach the solids remain in the vat, and solution is moved. Tank and vat leaching involves placing ore, usually after size reduction and classification, into large tanks or vats at ambient operating conditions containing a leaching solution and allowing the valuable material to leach from the ore into solution. In tank leaching the ground, classified solids are already mixed with water to form a slurry or pulp, and this is pumped into the tanks. Leaching reagents are added to the tanks to achieve the leaching reaction. In a continuous system the slurry will then either overflow from one tank to the next, or be pumped to the next tank. Ultimately the “pregnant” solution is separated from the slurry using some form of liquid/solid separation process, and the solution passes on to the next phase of recovery. In vat leaching the solids are loaded into the vat, once full the vat is flooded with a leaching solution. The solution drains from the tank, and is either recycled back into the vat or is pumped to the next step of the recovery process. . Vat leach units are rectangular containers (drums, barrels, tanks or vats), usually very big and made of wood or concrete, lined with material resistant to the leaching media. The treated ore is usually coarse. The vats are usually run sequentially to maximize the contact time between the ore and the reagent. In such a series the leachate collected from one container is added to another vat with fresher ore As mentioned previously tanks are equipped with agitators to keep the solids in suspension in the vats and improve the solid to liquid to gas contact. Agitation is further assisted by the use of tank baffles to increase the efficiency of agitation and prevent centrifuging of slurries in circular tanks...

We are excited to post this video and show you all our progress on processing printed circuit boards (PCB's) for gold, copper and other metals with our hammer mill and shaker table. We have the ability to take whole boards, crush them, and run them on our shaker table. We are still in the experimental stage but we have high hopes to have a complete system ready to sell soon. I should clarify that we can't recover all the gold from the boards, but at the end of the video we do have free metallic gold in the gold pan. Our goal is to take whole boards and concentrate out the valuables (metals) from the non-values (fiberglass, plastic, etc). The free gold can easily be removed, melted, and sold directly to a gold buyer, leaving the concentrates, which are much more valuable that the boards themselves. The remaining gold is plated onto other metals. This cannot be mechanically separated, but using the hammer mill and shaker table it can be concentrated into a salable product. The #2 and #3 hole outputs can be sold to a refiner and let them deal with all the chemicals and refining process. For most people its too complicated, dangerous, expensive, etc. to separate out the different metals in the concentrates. As a side note the free gold per pound recovered from the ~20 pounds of boards equates to 1 troy ounce per ton of boards. This would be considered very high grade gold ore for any miner. The PCB's also have loads of copper, tin, lead, plated gold, etc that is added value on top of that 1 oz/ton free gold recovered. Similar to in situ mining, heap leach mining differs in that it places ore on a liner, then adds the chemicals via drip systems to the ore, whereas in situ mining lacks these liners and pulls pregnant solution up to obtain the minerals. Most mining companies, favor the economic feasibility of the heap leaching, considering that heap leaching is a better alternative to conventional processing (such as flotation, agitation, and vat leaching). Additionally, dump leaching is an essential part of most copper mining operations and along with other deterministic factors, determines the quality grade of the produced material. Due to the effect that the dump leaching has, i.e. it can contribute substantially to the economic viability of the mining process it is advantageous to include the results of the leaching operation in the economic overall project evaluation. This, in effect, requires that the key controllable variables, which have an effect on the recovery of the metal and the quality of solution coming from a dump leaching process. The process has ancient origins; one of the classical methods for the manufacture of copperas (iron sulfate) was to heap up iron pyrite and collect the leachate from the heap, which was then boiled with iron to produce iron(II) sulfate

The solution containing gold and silver exits the base of the dump, is collected and precious metals extracted. The resultant barren solution is recharged with additional cyanide and returned to the dump. This method of leaching is usually suitable for low grade ores because it is very low cost. However, it operates with slow kinetics and may take up about 1 to 2 years to extract 50% of the desired mineral.

The Congress mine is centred near the north shore of Carpenter Lake, latitude 50° 52' 00", longitude 122° 43' 35", west of the mouth of Gun Creek, six kilometres northeast of Gold Bridge on Highway 40 (Figure 10a). The property was first visited in 1985. Geological mapping was completed by the writer during several visits to the property in 1986 and Ace adit was examined and sampled. The Howard adits and Lou decline surveyed in July 1988. History The property, consisting of the Congress mine and several nearby mineral prospects, is owned jointly by Levon Resources Limited and Veronex Resources Limited. The claim block includes a number of reverted Crown-granted claims including Stibnite 1-4, Snowflake fraction, Turner 1, Turner 2, Robert fraction, David fraction, Nap 1, 3 to 9 and Ace 17, 18, 20, 22, 23, 28. The history of the Congress property began about 1910 when the 'Northstar-University' vein was found, following the earlier discovery of placer gold on Gun Creek. The Congress vein was staked by E.J. Taylor and J. Shuster in 1913 and, according to Cooke et al.(1986), C.H. Allan and Associates produced a small amount of gold-antimony ore from a short adit. Congress Gold Mines Limited acquired the property from T. Turner in 1933 and developed three adit levels on the Congress zone between 1934 and 1937. During this period 940 tonnes of ore was tested at the Wayside mill; this yielded 2.58 kilograms of gold, 1.31 kilograms of silver and 38 kilograms of copper. From 1946 to 1950 Sheep Creek Gold Mines Limited managed the property and developed two additional underground levels at the Congress mine and connected the workings with an inclined shaft. In 1959 the Howard vein was discovered 900 metres west of the Congress mine. Ownership of the property passed to the Ace Mining Company Limited then, under option agreement, to Bralorne Pioneer Mines Limited from 1960 to 1964. In this period Bralorne Pioneer Mines Limited did underground work on the Howard vein and continued drifting at the Congress mine while also carrying out programs of surface and underground drilling. The Howard vein was drifted on for about 160 metres at this time, also several new mineralized zones were discovered, including the Bluff zone northeast of the Congress mine and the Paul zone on the north side of Gun Creek, 1.5 kilometres north of the previous discoveries. In 1965 the Ace Mining Company drilled the Paul zone and did other prospecting on the property. Additional exploration was undertaken by Rayrock Exploration Limited. in 1964 and Alice Arm Mining Limited in 1972. In 1975 Alice Arm was reorganized as New Congress Resources, Limited and, over the next five years completed much drilling and drifting on the Howard zone. The property was acquired by Levon Resources Limited in 1982 and under option agreement Veronex Resources Limited funded continuation of the exploration program. The principal exploration has been diamond drilling and underground development of the Howard and Lou zones in 1984 to 88, and a bioleaching pilot project in 1988 and 1989. (Due to the overall fine-grained nature of the ore and the association of gold and silver with arsenopyrite and stibnite, a 250,000-litre capacity biological leaching pilot plant was installed in the Plateau Pond area near the west boundary of the property with the collaboration of Giant Bay Resources Limited. A 600-tonne test sample for this plant was mined from the Howard and Ace workings of the mine). No further work has been done on the property because of disappointing results at a time of low metal prices. Back to top Top Description The Congress property is underlain by a panel of Pioneer pillow lavas and associated basalt feeder dikes and small cogenetic gabbro bodies (Church, 1986a; Cooke, 1986c). These rocks are bounded on the east and west by cataclastic facies of the Fergusson assemblage, including milled ribbon chert, phyllite, graphitic schist, and some marble lenses (Figure 11a). Feldspar porphyry dikes of Tertiary age are conspicuous in the mine workings as well as areas of fracturing and faulting. The ore is relatively simple consisting mainly of pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite in discontinuous northerly trending quartz veins accompanied by carbonate alteration.

She works with naturally occurring micro-organisms which digest mineral ores, leaching metals in a process which saves water and energy. Chief executive of Jubilee Platinum (LON:JLP) Leon Coetzer walks us through the rationale behind securing a surface copper tailings project in Australia. He said it met a number of the firm's criteria. Fiirstly, that it was a surface project, secondly that it required metallurgical expertise to unlock the copper, that the capital entry level was quite low and that the the timeline between starting investing and earning from the property was quite short. "We found this project, which excited us on a number of fronts," he said.

Mining is a very serious environmental issue. First of all, when a mine is dug, the workers have to destroy the land that is there to make a hole. Also, when the mine is dug, the minerals that are found there release gasses that pollute the air. Water is polluted by: chemicals that the mine releases, by the waste and by the soil runoffs. Soil is polluted by the same chemicals, and by the polluted water that gets into it. Mining is an issue because we can't stop using copper; because we need copper for every single electrical device. People can help solve this issue by recycling copper; so instead of dumping your old T.V. in the trash, recycle it, take out the copper wires and other parts that still work, and use them to make a new television. The only problem with that is that copper wire recycling machines can cost up to a million dollars. If we want a recycling center, or a place where people can recycle their electrical devices, a lot of machines would be needed for that, which means that a lot of money would be needed.

Carbon in Pulp (CIP) is an extraction technique for recovery of gold which has been liberated into a cyanide solution as part of the gold cyanidation process. Introduced in the early 1980s, Carbon in Pulp is regarded as a simple and cheap process. As such it is used in most industrial applications where the presence of competing silver or copper does not prohibit its use. Activated carbon acts like a sponge to aurocyanide and other complex ions in solution. Hard carbon particles (much larger than the ore particle sizes) can be mixed with the ore and cyanide solution mixture. The gold cyanide complex is adsorbed onto the carbon until it comes to an equilibrium with the gold in solution. Because the carbon particles are much larger than the ore particles, the coarse carbon can then be separated from the slurry by screening using a wire mesh. Leached pulp and carbon are transferred in a counter current flow arrangement between a series of tanks, usually numbering 4 to 6. In the final tank, fresh or barren carbon is put in contact with low grade or tailings solution. At this tank the fresh carbon has a high activity and can remove trace amounts of gold (to levels below 0.01 mg/L Au in solution). As it moves up the train, the carbon loads to higher and higher concentrations of gold, as it comes in contact with higher grade solutions. Typically concentrations as high as 4000 to 8000 grams of gold per tonne of carbon (g/t Au) can be achieved on the final loaded carbon, as it comes in contact with freshly leached ore and pregnant leach solution (PLS). This can be measured by comparing the amount of gold extracted from the carbon to the amount of carbon used. The final loaded carbon then is removed and washed before undergoing "elution" or desorption of gold cyanide at high temperature and pH. Ethanol can also be used to desorb gold from activated carbon, but safety concerns have slowed its acceptance in the gold extraction industry. The elute solution, normally consisting of caustic soda (the electrolyte), cyanide and water circulates through the loaded carbon extracting gold and other metals. The loaded solution passes through an electro winning cell where the gold and other metals are attached to cathodes, made up of wire wool, by electrolysis. The solution then passes back through the loaded carbon extracting more gold and other metals. This process continues until the carbon has been stripped. The cathodes (wire wool now plated with gold and other metals) are removed and placed in acid. The acid burns off the wire wool and other metals such as copper and leaves a sediment of gold and solution of acid and dissolved silver. The acid and silver are drained off after which the gold sediment is numerously washed with water. After the water washes are complete the gold is dried mixed with borax and smelted.
