World War I–era Butte was a volatile jumble of antiwar protest, seething labor unrest, and divisive ethnic tension. Against that explosive backdrop, the worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history began a half hour before midnight on June 8, 1917, when fire broke out in the North Butte Mining Company’s Granite Mountain shaft. Michael Punke recounts the tragic tale and heroic actions of the miners who fought to survive. Punke is author of Fire and Brimstone: The North Butte Mining Disaster of 1917; Last Stand: George Bird Grinnell, the Battle to Save the Buffalo, and the Birth of the New West; and The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge. Now a resident of Missoula and vice president of Global Public Policy (AWS), Punke is also former United States Ambassador to the World Trade Organization. This 22-minute video explores the profound impact of the copper mining industry on Montana. This video can be viewed as two shorter segments if desired. Segment 1 (10:55) focuses specifically on the Copper King's 1894 Capital Fight between Helena and Anaconda. Segment 2 (11:13) focuses on the tensions between laborers and management in Butte's copper mines in the early 20th century. These tensions paralleled the growth of unions in Butte. This video presents an overarching theme of industrialization during the period from 1892 until World War I-era Montana. http://mhs.mt.gov/Education/MontanaMosaic.aspx

Butte is a town in, and the county seat of Silver Bow County, Montana, United States. In 1977, the city and county governments consolidated to form the sole entity of Butte-Silver Bow. The culmination of six years of hard work and undying faith placed "Our Lady of the Rockies" standing 90 feet atop the continental divide, at an elevation of 8,510 feet, overlooking the city of Butte. Talk and book signing by Missoula author Doug Ammons. A Darkness lit by Heroes is a new novel about Butte’s 1917 Speculator Mine disaster, the deadliest hard-rock mining disaster in American history. Ammons based his novel on extensive research he conducted into six-hundred pages of eye-witness testimony that had been lost for ninety years. The story is carefully told to encompass not only the trapped miners’ point of view but also the emotions of the courageous rescuers and distraught men and women waiting above ground.

This was the Copper Capitol when it was in use. It was a very key element is World War I. This huge to be a huge boom town when they started mining the area. On my road trip from San Diego to Montana on the last leg off the Interstate 15 we stopped here to check out all of the old mining equipment and historic scenery. The Berkley Pit was closed which is a huge pit that was created during the mining process. These headframe units are massive and cool to see the old engineering techiniques. Brothels in USA Bordello Whorehouse & Brothels Walking around in Butte Montana they have lots Brothels in the Red Light District & Historic Old Buildings and Structures http://www.1ownercarguy.com When the mining started it became a boom town and one of the main business es at the time became Brothels and Prostitution. Butte had it's own version of the Red Light District. The buildings are all shut down now but some of them were ran into the 80's. They had underground tunnel systems that are still there today but are all covered up and you can't access anymore. Some cool stuff went on in this town. This was one of the biggest Copper Mines and produced copper for the entire country. Everything is now protected and just sits vacant now. You see a lot of trucks in this video. Everyone seems to be driving one and you don't see many cars unless they are a Subaru. Lots of cool things to see in this town. BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — It was an unusual and unfortunate confluence of events: A larger-than-normal number of geese was making a later-than-normal migration over Montana when a snowstorm blew in at the wrong time and sent them soaring to the wrong place. The throngs of white birds splashed down in a 50 billion-gallon toxic stew that is part of the nation's largest Superfund site. At least 3,000 died. Residents of this mining city say the snow goose deaths this fall were a wake-up call that raises broader questions about the Berkeley Pit and whether federal regulators will be ready when the former copper mine that collects heavily acidic, metal-laden water reaches capacity. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-01-23-US--Toxic%20Pit/id-5982c8a2a30b4634b525794028b0f3ff http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Check oldmarine1 for updates on this , he's staying on top of breaking news regarding this: https://www.youtube.com/user/theoldmarine1 ____ We all remember the BLM / Bundy Ranch standoff which occurred in 2014. Most people don't know, the Nevada land grab was NOT about "cattle". It was about Gold Butte,Nevada. Gold Butte is an old dormant butte volcano, and an old GOLD MINING TOWN which was shut down by the government between 1905 -1908. During World War 1 a large majority of the copper and silver used in the war came from around this location in Clark County Nevada. Ironically, 100 years ago is the time where Bundy claims his family began ranching the area. It is odd that the families that stayed behind AFTER the government shut down the post office (on purpose shut down to cut off supply to the town).... turned out to be ranchers --- and that was 100 years ago. Bundy, an old man now in 2015 must have been passed down a "family secret" about the Gold deposits, silver deposits, and other precious metals in the ground at Gold Butte, NV. The whole BLM land grab in 2014 was about Gold. Which is why Harry Reid wanted to strip mine the area and build a "solar farm" on Gold Butte after they level the mountainside and get the contents of the stripped surface and subsurface. ______ Gold Butte is located about 33 miles southeast of Glendale. Mica was first discovered here in 1873, and then gold in 1905. By the next year, a post office was built. A gold rush in 1908 brought in more people, and the townsite now had a hotel, livery stable, post office, mercantile, and several residences. Another camp named Copper City was started two miles west at the site of the short-lived Lincoln copper mine. By 1910 the gold rush was over and most mining operations ceased. No buildings remain, only a couple concrete slabs / foundations, two graves, and several old mine shafts. Mining is thought to have begun in the 1700’s when the Spanish left remnants of their efforts in the form of arrastras. An arrastra is a large flat rock hollowed out over which a donkey would drag another rock to crush the ore. There are four known arrastras in the Gold Butte townsite area. In the 1800’s mica was being mined and shipped from the area. Gold was discovered in 1906 and by 1907 Gold Butte was booming with a speculated population of 2,000. By 1909 the boom went bust and the post office was removed from the townsite of Gold Butte. Mining continued in the area as the Grand Gulch copper mine produced much of the needed copper for World War 1. The wagon trails that carried the copper to the St. Thomas railroad spur can still be followed to this day. The wagon masters’ signatures in wagon wheel axel grease tell the story on the sandstone walls of Mud Wash. ______ Now move forward to 2015, and we have Galice Oregon, and a repeat situation of the BLM coming in to a Gold mining town to seize land for their own use. Again we have locals who mine the land , who have a miners claim (by law) on land that is public use. Just like Nevada , Bundy, and Gold Butte, in Oregon we have Gold HILL nearby. A butte and a hill could be considered very much similar. Nearby volcanoes at each location tell the tale of the rich mineral deposits which must exist at both locations in NV, and OR. ______ http://www.friendsofgoldbutte.org/about/historical-resources/ https://www.google.com/search?q=gold+butte+nevada https://www.google.com/search?q=gold+butte+nevada+WWI+copper http://silverstateghosttowns.com/goldbutte.html http://kensphotogallery.blogspot.com/2015/01/daytrip-gold-butte-town-site-gold-butte.html

On the anniversary of the Granite Mountain-Speculator fire, the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives will continue its Brown Bag Lunch series on Wednesday, June 8, with a presentation by Doug Ammons entitled The Speculator Mine Disaster: 99 Years Later, retelling the disaster based on the recently found Coroner’s Inquest. Using this eyewitness testimony, Ammons will present how the initial incident spiraled into catastrophe and the courage that unfolded thousands of feet below. Doug Ammons is almost a Montana native, having been born in North Dakota during his family’s cross-country move to Missoula. He received a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Montana, written two books, and participated in making adventure films for National Geographic, ESPN, and Outdoor Life. Let's face it: Humans are pretty messy. Industrial processes like mining and manufacturing are important parts of keeping civilization going, but they all impact the environment. Sometimes that impact is particularly big and messy, leaving behind hazardous waste that can take years or even decades to clean up. Listen to this audiobook in full for free with a 30-day trial: http://mdon.icu/12/262207 The author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, The Revenantbasis for the award-winning motion picture starring Leonardo DiCapriotells the remarkable story of the worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history. The worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history began a half hour before midnight on June 8, 1917, when fire broke out in the North Butte Mining Company's Granite Mountain shaft. Sparked more than two thousand feet below ground, the fire spewed flames, smoke, and poisonous gas through a labyrinth of underground tunnels. Within an hour, more than four hundred men would be locked in a battle to survive. Within three days, one hundred and sixty-four of them would be dead. Fire and Brimstone recounts the remarkable stories of both the men below ground and their families above, focusing on two groups of miners who made the incredible decision to entomb themselves to escape the gas. While the disaster is compelling in its own right, Fire and Brimstone also tells a far broader story striking in its contemporary relevance. Butte, Montana, on the eve of the North Butte disaster, was a volatile jumble of antiwar protest, an abusive corporate master, seething labor unrest, divisive ethnic tension, and radicalism both left and right. It was a powder keg lacking only a spark, and the mine fire would ignite strikes, murder, ethnic and political witch hunts, occupation by federal troops, and ultimately a battle over presidential power. Fairmont RV Park, located between two historic cities - Anaconda and Butte, MT, is an easy off/on I-90 (Exit 211). Much of the lure of this part of the country is the Spirit of the American West. The Anaconda/Philipsburg area, the core of the Pintler Scenic Route, is blessed with year 'round recreation opportunities, scenic splendor, and plenty of history. Philipsburg, only 30 miles from Fairmont RV Park, was founded in 1886 as a trading center. It has a beautifully restored street front, and the Sweet Palace is "a must" -- it's an unbelievably huge Victorian Confectionary. Fishing in Montana's big rivers is an angler's dream; Rockhouds search for sapphires, garnets, crystals, quartz & amethyst. Mining history means untold numbers of Ghost towns. Anaconda, known for smelting copper for more than a century, is today a small town of friendly folks. Historical homes built in the 1880's still stand tall with architectural beauty that is sure to bring the cameras out of the cases. The huge brick smokestack, constructed in 1918, stands on a small hill & looms a total of 1,000 ft. above Anaconda. Today the site of that smelter is the location of the nationally known18-hole Old Works Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Old # l Trolley stops at the Butte Visitor's Center for daily tours of historical Butte. Fairmont RV Park is a great central location to hang your hat while sightseeing the area. There's so much to see and do that more than one night is needed before moving on. The RV Park & Campground has all the amenities to keep everyone happy. There are cabins, tenting & RV sites -- all located on 15 acres. Want to really go western? Reserve one of their popular Indian Teepees. There's a 1500 Sq. Ft. Recreation Hall with lots of games, pool table, internet, and the cushy couch awaits you. Group facilities include outdoor canopies and seating. Butte Montana, once regarded as “The Richest Hill on Earth” for its vast Porphyry copper mineral deposits, has recently undergone its 30th year in reclamation activities. The Silver Bow Creek/ Butte Area Superfund Site is one of America’s largest Superfund MegaSites in the country. The Berkeley Pit Lake System, a portion of this site, is known worldwide as a “worst case scenario” for the water quality of flooded open pit mines. Nicholas Tucci will discuss the reclamation history and unique challenges facing the long term mining reclamation involving this site. Nick Tucci received his Bachelor’s in Biology from Youngstown State University and Masters in Geosciences/Geochemistry from Montana Tech, University of Montana.
