The rat-hole coal mines of Meghalaya

02:32
Meghalaya, a state better known for its abundant forest wealth and natural beauty, is unfortunately also home to a highly hazardous, unregulated and unscientific form of coal mining called 'rat hole mining'. The mines have mushroomed like an unorganised cottage industry. Most land in Meghalaya is privately owned by tribals, who also exploit the coal reserve found in the area.

Train On Fire! Completely Shuts Down NS Pittsburgh Line!

03:14
Train locomotive on fire going under a bridge that we were standing on! Thick black smoke could be seen for miles before the Norfolk Southern freight train got to us. The smoke turned to fire and the train stalled out just as the locomotive on fire passed us. The NS Pittsburgh Line was shut down for a couple hours until a railroad inspector came out to inspect the engine. They also brought a couple other locomotives to tie onto the front of the train and then take it east toward Altoona Pennsylvania. This fire happened at Cassandra Pennsylvania on June 18, 2018 at 1:23pm. Millenniumforce, Andy Revello and I had just got here. I have more video of this that I will make into a longer video showing them coupling on a couple helper locomotives to pull the train. Thanks for watching! Land Subsidence Occurs in east China, Swallowing 4 Parking Vehicles

01:15
Land subsidence occurred in Ruijin City, Jiangxi Province, east China on Saturday, swallowing 4 parking vehicles on the road. The land subsidence made a hole of more than 5 meter long, nearly 3 meter deep. "I was having lunch at the other side of the road when I saw the tree was sinking slowly. All of a sudden, the road subsided and all the cars including mine fell into the hole. Then I called the police and firefighters arrived after a while," said a witness. The firefighters rushed to the scene and lifted all the cars from the hole by crane. No injury or death was reported and the reason was still under investigation. Australia - a country road trains. In the Australian outback, where for hundreds of kilometers around you to meet a couple of other cattle-farms, or "stations", as they call them, train - a vital necessity. After all, in order to deliver the goods to the destination of the train, the owner, such as a sheep station would have to get their living from the load to the nearest railway hundreds of kilometers. Road trains - powerful trucks, which stretches for two, three (and sometimes more) of huge trailer, capable in a matter of days to cross the Green Continent, connecting the country's states and territories. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. The Great Train Race! Steam Vs Diesel!

08:34
Steam train races diesel train. Trains running side by side. Train meet at Cass. Shay steam locomotive #2 built by Lima in 1928 races an EMD diesel locomotive BL2 #82 built in 1948. Filmed at Spruce West Virginia on the Cass Scenic Railroad and Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. Filmed July 15, 2017. We rode the steam train from Cass to the race location and the diesel passenger train came from Elkins West Virginia. This is an annual event and all the cabins in Cass were sold out so we stayed at Bear Creek Lodge in Cass which actually has a view of the train station and the live action in Cass. Once again, my money was on the diesel but the diesel continues to lose every year and so did I. Lol. Virginia Coal Mine Coke Ovens And Railroad Spur Line

07:45
A photo & video compilation made of the historic Virginia Coal Mine coke ovens site and the Birmingham Mineral Railroad spur line that connected to it. The Virginia Coal Mine was originally owned and operated by Gulf States Steel in the 1890's and later purchased by the Republic Steel Company in the early 1900's. The coal mine site has long since been wiped away but the coke ovens nearby are still accessible. The Louisville & Nashville Railroads Birmingham Mineral Division built a spur line to the coal mine in the 1890's off of its Blue Creek line to connect with it and transport the coal & coke to the blast furnaces at the Thomas Blast Furnace in Birmingham. Today the trestle remains can be seen on Johns Road in southwest Jefferson County and the trestle remains over Valley Creek are accessible during winter months. Hopefully more exploring can be done then of this historic site.

Global Warming: Greens vs Nuclear - "Th" Thorium Documentary

22:36
http://thoriumremix.com Coal ash piles contain more radioactive material than released by any operating nuclear power plant. Pollution from coal kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. Yet Germany and Japan are building additional coal plants to replace nuclear power plants. This has a short-term cost in lives (due to air pollution) and very serious implications for global warming. As our van of thorium advocates discuss various energy options, we hear from prominent environmentalists and climatologists who support (or who have recently come to support) expansion of nuclear power. Support of nuclear power among climate scientists is nothing new, but creating this video would have been impossible even 1 year ago. That we can quickly summarize why these scientists changes their minds is thanks to "Pandora's Promise" http://pandoraspromise.com/ by Robert Stone (prominent environmentalist). He had come to change his mind about nuclear power, and has fellow environmentalists explain their own pro-nuclear reasoning as an indirect means of expressing his own. What "Pandora's Promise" does not include is Robert Stone's own voice (except when he confronts prominent anti-nuke Dr. Helen Caldicott from behind the camera). It is Robert Stone (and fellow pro-nuclear environmentalists) interviews surrounding Pandora's Promise that has allowed this video summary to be created. Baroness Bryony Worthington's offers additional commentary on the environmentalist perspective, having worked on climate change for Friends of the Earth, and drafted the extremely impactful UK Climate Change Bill. The bills was passed in late 2013, and helps ensure that existing coal plants in UK need to meet similar emission standards as new ones... a significant step in reducing UK GHG emissions. "Next Generation Reactors" are discussed by both Pandora's Promise environmentalists, and our van full of thorium advocates. Not every environmentalist or scientist shown here is talking in support of the same "next generation" reactor. We take a closer look at different next-generation reactors in a future video chapter. But all pro-nuclear scientists do agree that any next-generation reactor will achieve a much higher level of passive safety ("walk away safe"), will help reduce our carbon emissions, and will save hundreds of thousands of lives thanks to reductions in deadly air pollution created by burning fossil fuels. Mining Matters in your Everyday Life

04:19
This video by the Colorado Mining Association presents an informative and educational video on how mining matters to each and every one of us in our every day life, not just in Colorado but around the world. Many do not realize that our modern society relies on mining for many of the products and comforts we enjoy including such electronic devices such as computers, cell phones, MP3 Players, home appliances, and medical diagnostic equipment to name a few . Many of the facets of the lifestyle we enjoy in Colorado would not be possible without mining, including ski lifts, roadway anti-skid treatments, mountain bikes, , as well as the heat , shelter and electricity needed to survive a long cold mountain night. Colorado is a major producer of molybdenum (called moly for short) which is used in stainless steel, cars, lubricants, and light bulbs. Moly is also used in automotive catalytic converters, to help keep our environment clean. Mining provides for personal health care products you use every day such as cosmetics, toothpaste, deodorant, calamine lotion, baking soda, and your sunscreen! 72% of Colorado's electricty is provided by clean, abundant coal. Coal provides 50% of the electricity nationwide. Colorado coal is low in ash and sulfur; therefore, it is considered "clean coal" Modern methods of filtering and scrubbing coal plant stack emissions provide for cheap and affordable energy to energize our economy and meet the affordable energy costs with little emissions into our environment. Alternative energy such as wind, solar , hydro and geothermal options become a feasible component for fulfilling our Nations' energy needs. Colorado is pursuing an aggressive alternative energy program which depends on the mining industry to provide the raw materials to build the solar panels, wind turbines, hybrid cars, and transmission line infrastructure required to meet the demands of these future programs. Bio-Fuel production, and modern agriculture in general would not be possible without the fertilizer and pest control products which rely on mining for some ingredients. Many do not realize that Colorado uranium is used around the world to fuel clean, efficient, zero emissions nuclear energy facilities in both the industrial and military sectors. Modern mining is conducted without damaging the environment. Any surface disturbances are restored back to their natural condition, typically providing an improved animal habitat. Modern Mmning is environmentally sound and actually safer than most other occupations. You are far more likely to be injured working in the retail, construction or transportation industries than working in a mine, above or below ground. Colorado miners are typically persons who love and actively protect their fragile mountain environment in which they live and work. They usually live in close proximity to the mines and go above and beyond any environmental or safety regulations, not only in their stewardship of environmental protection, but for the protection of their families, homes, co-workers and community in which they live. For more information on how important mining is to our quality of life we invite you to visit the following link : Colorado Mining Association http://www.coloradomining.org National Mining Association http://www.nma.org Mineral Information Institute http://www.mii.org If it can't be grown, it has to be mined !

The former coal executive served a one-year prison sentence after he was convicted of conspiring to violate federal mine safety and health standards following the 2010 disaster at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch coal mine. The accident left 29 workers dead. Such a corporate scandal would cause many chief executives to resign from public life forever. But Blankenship is trying to rewrite his own plot with a new line: U.S. senator from West Virginia. Blankenship has a shot at winning Tuesday's Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat in West Virginia, if internal GOP polling reported by the Weekly Standard is any indication. Despite (or maybe because of) opposition from the GOP establishment, Blankenship is garnering 28 percent of the primary vote in that poll, with his nearest opponent barely behind with 27 percent. But the Upper Big Branch explosion is not Blankenship's first run-in with critics. Neither is his Senate run -- featuring a recent incendiary television spot about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell helping “China people." In fact, as he rose through the ranks of Massey Energy, Blankenship again and again attracted harsh rebuke — and even a few bullets. Here's a run down: — “We don't have any love for the union”: In the mid-1980s, the United Mine Workers went on strike against Massey, which at the time employed about 1,100 workers in eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia. Blankenship, then a manager at a Massey subsidiary, was tasked with dealing with the miners. Massey broke with the rest of the coal industry by refusing to sign a 1984 deal with the union to end the strike. Miners believed the company was trying to break up the union by insisting on separate contracts for each of its many offshoot companies. A year after the start of the strike, nonunion coal trucks drove through a union blockade, damaging the cars of striking miners. Blankenship said the drivers smashed the blockade because they “feared for their lives.” Blankenship eventually “brought in replacement workers [and] armed security,” union president Cecil E. Roberts told The Washington Post in 2010. It was during this strike, according to Blankenship, that an unknown gunman shot 11 bullets into his office, including one into a TV set he would later come to display as a kind of trophy. “I'm ready to be killed for this reason,” Blankenship told The Washington Post in the 1980s, seeing the fight not as one between a corporation and its workers but as one between nationwide union and local managers. “The UMW is trying to take away our freedom,” Blankenship said at the time. “We don't have any love for the union. I firmly believe they tried to kill us on several occasions.” — Bigger than Exxon Valdez: In 2000, Blankenship's first year as Massey's chief executive, the bottom of one of the company's coal slurry impoundments broke into the mines below it, allowing the gooey waste to ooze into waterways in Kentucky and West Virginia. The sludge, laden with arsenic and mercury, “killed everything in the streams, all the way to the Ohio River,” Jack Spadaro, a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) engineer, told "60 Minutes” in 2004. Spadaro had become a whistleblower by then when, as he describes it, the George W. Bush administration prematurely closed its investigation into Massey following the spill. MSHA is a division of the Labor Department, which at the time was headed by Elaine Chao — who, in a bit of irony, is President Trump's transportation secretary as well as Mitch McConnell's wife. The spill was “vastly larger in scale than the oil spill from the Exxon Valdez,” according to ProPublica reporter and McConnell biographer Alec MacGillis. — Other deadly accidents: Even before the deadly 2010 disaster, “Upper Big Branch miners lost more time on the job through worksite accidents than did other miners nationally” in seven of the eight years before that accident, The Post reported in 2010. The statistics were stark: Between 2005 and 2010, the MSHA cited the mine for 1,342 safety violations and $1.89 million in proposed fines. Before the explosion, three miners had died there after 1998. And at another mine, more w

Intro to Big Data: Crash Course Statistics #38

11:23
Today, we're going to begin our discussion of Big Data. Everything from which videos we click (and how long we watch them) on YouTube to our likes on Facebook say a lot about us - and increasingly more and more sophisticated algorithms are being designed to learn about us from our clicks and not-clicks. Today we're going to focus on some ways Big Data impacts on our lives from what liking Hello Kitty says about us to how Netflix chooses just the right thumbnail to encourage us to watch more content. And Big Data is necessarily a good thing, next week we're going to discuss some of the problems that rise from collecting all that data. Crash Course is on Patreon! The Industrial Economy: Crash Course US History #23

12:32
In which John Green teaches you about the Industrial Economy that arose in the United States after the Civil War. You know how when you're studying history, and you're reading along and everything seems safely in the past, and then BOOM you think, "Man, this suddenly seems very modern." For me, that moment in US History is the post-Reconstruction expansion of industrialism in America. After the Civil War, many of the changes in technology and ideas gave rise to this new industrialism. You'll learn about the rise of Captains of Industry (or Robber Barons) like Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, and JP Morgan. You'll learn about trusts, combinations, and how the government responded to these new business practices. All this, plus John will cover how workers reacted to the changes in society and the early days of the labor movement. You'll learn about the Knights of Labor and Terence Powderly, and Samuel Gompers and the AFL. As a special bonus, someone gets beaten with a cane. AGAIN. What is it with American History and people getting beaten with canes? Support CrashCourse on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse

Fukushima: A Demonic Chain Reaction (by Kevin Kamps)

29:56
Kevin Kamps, a specialist in the management and transport of nuclear high-level waste for the group "Beyond Nuclear" (Beyond Nuclear) summarizes the main risks here, accidents and incidents related to the nuclear industry since its inception, the "Manhattan Project", the race for the nuclear bomb that will be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It also draws a parallel between the various accidents in the United States and Japan, which are very similar. Is it really surprising when you know the involvement of the United States in the development of nuclear energy in Japan after the war, with "Atoms for Peace" program (Atoms for Peace) launched by Eisenhower in 1953 and the involvement of the CIA? It will also discuss the concealment of information on security breaches in the nuclear industry, and frequent collusion between regulators and industry. Halting Mass Suicide by Coal—interview w/Heffa Schücking—Radio Ecoshock 2019-01-09

29:31
Do you think coal power is disappearing, being replaced by cleaner natural gas and renewable energy? Think again. According to data released by the International Energy Agency in 2018, coal consumption is going back up after two years of decline. That is terrible news for our future climate. Most of that new demand is coming from Asia. Japan and South Korea are pumping billions into new coal plant construction. Despite the good news you’ve heard about massive renewables in China, Chinese banks are investing tens of billions of dollars to expand coal power in many parts of the world. Wall Street is funding even more. Here to give us the big picture is Heffa Schuecking, a long-standing environmental leader in Germany, and a winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize. She is Managing Director of the German non-profit group Urgewald, which maintains a database of all coal projects and investors world-wide. Show by Radio Ecoshock, reposted under CC License. Episode details at https://www.ecoshock.org/2019/01/halting-mass-suicide-by-coal.html Stop Fossil Fuels researches and disseminates effective strategies and tactics to halt fossil fuel combustion as fast as possible. Learn more at https://stopfossilfuels.org SHOW EXCERPTS From the outside, we hear a lot about solar power and Danish wind sweeping into the German electricity system. But at least 35% of German power still comes from coal. In October 2018, about 50,000 protesters showed up to fight off the energy company RWE. That company wants to clear-cut more ancient Hambach Forest in Germany for a giant open-pit coal mine. WE ARE STILL BUILDING COAL PLANTS AROUND THE WORLD To prevent horrible climate change, we need to get out of coal power. But according to the group CoalEXit, since the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015, the number of coal power plants in the world has continued to grow. They say new coal plants starting up in the last three years use as much coal as “all of Japan’s and Russia’s coal plants put together.” THE CHINA COAL DRAGON No country has installed more solar power, or more mass transit, than China. They are world leaders in alternative tech. But what is the situation with coal power in China now? Officially, the Chinese government has recognized climate change as a serious threat. Unlike the United States and other countries in retreat or denial, China speaks as a world leader on climate change. So it was shocking to learn from Heffa’s group Urgewald that China is financing massive amounts of coal power expansion all over the world. In May 2017, the Global Environmental Institute, based in Beijing, reported that Chinese companies and banks are involved in 240 coal-fired power projects in 25 of the 65 countries along their “Belt and Road” project. Fifty four were already under construction by 2016. The United States reduced their fossil fuel emissions partly by exporting their dirtiest industries to Asia, mainly to China. Now the Chinese government is facing serious public pressure to clean up polluted air. I wonder if their plan is to export the dirtiest industries to other Asian countries in the Belt and Road orbit. THE OTHER DIRTY PROFITS FROM EXPANDING COAL But let us not just make Chinese companies and banks the boogey-man. Only one third of proposed new coal plants are financed or built by Chinese interests. The other two thirds comes from other nationalities. For example, Japanese companies and banks are pushing coal plants. So is the biggest source of capital on the planet: Wall Street. Through large investment houses, your own pension fund or mutual fund may be investing in wrecking the planet with more coal plants. Short term profit rules over ecological survival! Many companies that sell coal plants in Africa, Eastern Europe, and the rest of the world are hard to track. They may have names that suggest they really sell alternative or green energy. There are corporate shells hiding the real investors. That is why Urgewald created a massive database which names names. You or your investment manager can check for dirty companies using that database. Another tool is to insist that insurance companies get out of coal. We tend to forget that insurance companies hold and invest trillions of dollars/euros/pounds or yen. Urgewald has great success in getting three of Europe’s (and the world’s) largest insurance companies to name their coal exit date. Germany’s giant Allianz insurance has promised to stop insuring coal companies, and to withdraw investments from any projects or companies dealing in coal in a structured way over the next couple of decades. The Italian insurer Assicurazioni Generali has also promised to cut out coal. MORE COAL COUNTRY ROUND UP Heffa says that 53% of Europe’s emissions come from coal plants in Germany and Poland. Closing these coal plants is key to Europe meeting their climate targets. 670,000 megawatts are planned for construction, which would increase global coal plant emissions by 33%!

2017 Maps of Meaning 01: Context and Background

02:31:27
In this lecture, I discuss the context within which the theory I am delineating through this course emerge: that of the cold war. What is belief? Why is it so important to people? Why will they fight to protect it? I propose that belief unites a culture's expectations and desires with the actions of its people, and that the match between those two allows for cooperative action and maintains emotional stability. I suggest, further, that culture has a deep narrative structure, presenting the world as a forum for action, with characters representing the individual, the known, and the unknown -- or the individual, culture and nature -- or the individual, order and chaos. --- SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL --- Direct Support: https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/donate Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/jordanbpeterson --- BOOKS --- 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos: https://jordanbpeterson.com/12-rules-for-life/ Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief: https://jordanbpeterson.com/maps-of-meaning/ --- LINKS --- Website: https://jordanbpeterson.com/ 12 Rules for Life Tour: https://jordanbpeterson.com/events/ Blog: https://jordanbpeterson.com/blog/ Podcast: https://jordanbpeterson.com/podcast/ Reading List: https://jordanbpeterson.com/great-books/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordan.b.peterson/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drjordanpeterson --- PRODUCTS --- Self Authoring Suite: https://selfauthoring.com/ Understand Myself personality test: https://understandmyself.com/ Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/jordanbpeterson

Memories of Red: Hungary Sludge Disaster

Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/romania-hungary-mining-toxic-waste-rosia-montana-gold Pulitzer Center grantees Dimiter Kenarov and Nadia Shira Cohen traveled to Hungary to document the process of recovery after one of Europe's biggest environmental catastrophe. In October, 2010, red toxic sludge — the alkalizing red mud — engulfed residential areas and farmland near Ajkai Alumina refinery, about 160 miles southwest of Budapest, Hungary. The substance was a byproduct of refining bauxite into alumina and contained heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic and chromium that burned through human tissues and created wounds that never healed properly. The disaster killed 10 people, injured more than a hundred, and heavily damaged waterways and soils. Today residents have returned home to persisting environmental and health problems, including lead poisoning, respiratory issues, and infertile farmland. Despite the dim outlook, the disaster has produced a positive outcome of social integration in ethnically divided Hungary. Dimiter Kenarov and Nadia Shira Cohen wade through the hidden toxic waste in European Union's new member states, where EU's high environmental standards are still very difficult to enforce. Ship Capsizes in Shaoyang County

Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews On Sept. 9, a shipwreck occurred in Shaoyang County, Hunan Province. However, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) controlled media refused to report on the tragedy. According to locals and netizens, 63 bodies were found washed up on shore, on the morning of Sept. 10. It was reported that the overcrowded ship ran into a sand pile dug by a nearby dredger. Thus, it is impossible for local officials to escape responsibility. Around 3:20 p.m. on Sept. 9, a passenger ship capsized in Shaoyang County, Hunan Province. As mainland media reported, most passengers were children that were left at home by their migrant worker parents. At 9:00 a.m. on Sept. 10, officials claimed that there were only 43 people aboard the ship, and 11 people died. Ms. Zhou, a local resident of Shaoyang County, said: "Government personnel were called in to search for bodies. They put bodies here and there, thus no one could tell exactly how many people had died. Wherever they found a body, that's where put them. It is impossible that only a few dozen people had died." A local resident blogged that the passenger ship was severely overcrowded and that at least 63 bodies were found. Insiders blogged that "The bodies were all junior high school students, mostly girls." Netizen, Shang Pin, a local kindergarten teacher, blogged that almost 100 people were on board, 80 of whom were students returning home. She also confirmed that more than 60 people had died. Other netizens verified her information. Netizen, Wu Zhaoyong001, said, "I am from Shaoyang. All of my relatives live on the side of the river where the accident occurred. They witnessed the entire scene. T hey watched as one body after another was found, including the bodies of my distant relatives, 63 in total." He said, "Some people sent threatening text messages to me, as no one is permitted to release death data without official confirmation." Shang Pin said: "The ship capsized in a place called Hengchong's dock. It hit a dredger boat's steel cable." But some people claim that the ship collided with the dredger, while others say that the ship hit a large mound of sand near the dredger. But however it happened, each version of the story was linked to the dredger. Ms. Zhou said many people freely dredge the river for sand, which has adversely affected residents in her hometown, Tangtian City in Shaoyang County. Ms. Zhou: "The river used to be very clean, but now it can't be used anymore, even for washing clothes. There are so many dredgers out there, and all they want is sand. They never fill in the holes that they dig. Some places are very deep. And when water rises up, no one knows how deep it is below." An Internet article disclosed that most people in Shaoyang County are poor. Most young people work out of the area. When county officials applied for national subsidies, they were turned down because "every section-level cadre drives an expensive car." Thus, local governors "ask permission to use available land resources." They cut down trees in state-owned forests, collude with gangs, mine coal and manganese deposits, and even let gangs run and monopolize the transportation industry, just to fill their coffers. In addition, authorities allow gangs to dredge rivers for sand, which destroys nearby fertile farmlands. The whole environment has been seriously devastated. Gravel is being dug up and piled up in the river like hills. What lies beside these "hills" are very deep holes. The author of the article, "Shaoyang Shipwreck: Dredging Leads to Tragedy," said: "An overcrowded ship is part of the problem, but the dredger is the culprit!" Shandong-based lawyer, Liu Weiguo, blogged: "The shipwreck in Shaoyang County, Hunan Province, highlights the government's criminal omission. Lack of transportation and crowded ships must have existed for more than one day! Do not make the ship owners the scapegoat. Since it was the last scheduled trip of that day, no one had the heart to make the teenagers wait until the next day to go home. The overcrowded ship was due to the government's omission." News of the Shaoyang shipwreck spread very quickly online. Netizens expressed their anger over the information blockade regarding the incident and the fact that local governors are terribly corrupt. Text Mining the Contributors to Rail Accidents

Mobile: (0) 9952649690, Email: [email protected], web: www.jpinfotech.org, Blog: www.jpinfotech.blogspot.com Rail accidents represent an important safety concern for the transportation industry in many countries. In the 11 years from 2001 to 2012, the U.S. had more than 40 000 rail accidents that cost more than $45 million. While most of the accidents during this period had very little cost, about 5200 had damages in excess of $141 500. To better understand the contributors to these extreme accidents, the Federal Railroad Administration has required the railroads involved in accidents to submit reports that contain both fixed field entries and narratives that describe the characteristics of the accident. While a number of studies have looked at the fixed fields, none have done an extensive analysis of the narratives. This paper describes the use of text mining with a combination of techniques to automatically discover accident characteristics that can inform a better understanding of the contributors to the accidents. The study evaluates the efficacy of text mining of accident narratives by assessing predictive performance for the costs of extreme accidents. The results show that predictive accuracy for accident costs significantly improves through the use of features found by text mining and predictive accuracy further improves through the use of modern ensemble methods. Importantly, this study also shows through case examples how the findings from text mining of the narratives can improve understanding of the contributors to rail accidents in ways not possible through only fixed field analysis of the accident reports.
