Mongolia's Mining Boom (2012)

The Big Dig: Mongolia is the new frontier in a massive, break-neck speed resources rush. But as it races to take advantage of Chinese demand, helped along by Rio Tinto, what is it getting from digging up the steppes? Australian miner Rio Tinto is about to open one of the biggest copper mines on the planet in Mongolia, which will soon account for more than 30% of the country's entire GDP. "Some of the optimistic geologists we have say that this business could run for up to 100 years", Cameron McRae from Rio Tinto explains. But the company only cedes the Mongolian government a 34% stake, provoking worries about where the benefits of Mongolia's resource wealth will go. There's concerns the government is ill-equipped to strike complex mining deals in the national interest. "The deal is a financial transaction and whether it's really beneficial to Mongolia, I have many doubts about that", argues Dorjdari from the Responsible Mining Initiative. Environmentalists also worry that the mining push has come so fast and so aggressively that proper checks and balances are not in place. "Most tourists come to Mongolia because they want to see that pristine open space blue sky, but what if we couldn't offer it anymore?" Mongolia's Economic Boom Is Leaving Many Behind (2014)

Mineral-rich Mongolia sells fields

02:25
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe With about 6.5 billion tonnes of untapped reserves, Mongolia's soils contain almost 70% of all known types of minerals. Its soils contain copper, gold, iron ore, coal, zinc, nickel, silver and tin. Oyu Tolgoi in the Gobi desert has the world's largest undeveloped copper and gold deposit. It aims to produce 450 000 tonnes of copper and 300 000 ounces of gold each year. Now a huge section of the field has been sold to international mining companies, for a $7bn up-front investment. America's Controversial War On Coal (2014)

Back to Coal (2014): Mountaintop mining is an effective but controversial extraction method. Its devastating effect on the environment has provoked a 'war on coal' between ecologists and the miners who've lived on it for generations. They're all dead", says Rick, walking beside his old home in the Appalachians. Poisoning caused his fingernails to peel off and sickness forced him to move out from the area. Heavy metals leaking into the bio-system from the exposed mining areas are the source of the contamination. Yet for families who have mined for generations, new environmental policies threaten their livelihood. "We don't believe in crazy tree hug-er policy", insists Kentucky Senator, Keith Hall. The industry has helped many Appalachian families to rise up out of poverty, creating "an emotional tie that's really hard to sever". The charity is trying to fight what they say is a rampant illegal industry of trafficking from Nepal and child labour in the mines. 00:54
In this time series video, the Sharyn Gol mine site in the Northern Steppe region of Mongolia develops marginally, however the major impact from the development and expansion of illegal upstream Ninja mining is observed. Establishing in the early-mid 1990's, Ninja mining eventually dominates in the three upstream reaches, likely providing a source of pollution for downstream users. Note the areas to the south west of Sharyn Gol are dominated by agricultural land use, while the North and eastern areas are largely forested areas. CSRM's ADRAS research is funded by the Australian Government Australian Aid program, and investigates threats to the sustainability of herder livelihoods through social changes stimulated directly and indirectly by ecological impacts.
