America is changing how it gets its energy, and coal is losing out. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO The past decade has seen a revolution in residential solar systems. Cheap panels and creative financing options have led to a massive increase in solar installations-- and that increase is driving an employment boom. At the same time, the coal industry is experiencing a major downturn. But despite the current political rhetoric, it's a downturn that's been in the works for nearly 100 years. Automation, technical advances, and more recently, the rise of cheap natural gas have led to a significant drop in demand, onet that the industry may never recover from. Underground coal seam fires have been raging underneath China for not decades, but hundreds, even thousands of years. The coal spews out toxic columns of mercury, lead, arsenic, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide and temperatures can sore to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. And they're next to impossible to put out. It's one of the most dangerous environmental disasters plaguing the planet, and few have ever heard of it. All it takes is a single spark to turn a coalmine into a deadly inferno. For the past decade Dickenson Russell Coal Company a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources has been dewatering the abandoned McClure 1 mine to make room for coal waste slurry injection from the McClure 1 Coal Preparation plant. This occurs at the former air return shaft located beside Highway 83 just 6 miles east of Clintwood, Virginia. The water is discharged untreated into the McClure River which flows into the Russell Fork , then the Big Sandy, Ohio, and Mississippi. According to Eric Greear who works for the Department of Mines Minerals and Energy's Division of Mined Land Reclamation, only acidity and metal tests are performed on the water before it is discharged into the river. When asked about chemical testing, he said tests for chemicals were not required. The McClure #1 mine was in operation from 1978 to 1995. Has no one thought of the thousands of gallons of used hydraulic oil and gears oils that leaked from the machinery over the mine's lifespan? There are also many other chemicals that are left behind in the mining process including adhesives, strong cleaning agents, and anti-freeze to name a few. How can it be legal and considered "Running Right" to pump stagnant polluted mine water straight into our streams? \Alpha Natural Resources....Running Right?

What is ACID MINE DRAINAGE? What does ACID MINE DRAINAGE mean? ACID MINE DRAINAGE meaning - ACID MINE DRAINAGE definition - ACID MINE DRAINAGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Acid mine drainage, acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), or acid rock drainage (ARD) refers to the outflow of acidic water from metal mines or coal mines. Acid rock drainage occurs naturally within some environments as part of the rock weathering process but is exacerbated by large-scale earth disturbances characteristic of mining and other large construction activities, usually within rocks containing an abundance of sulfide minerals. Areas where the earth has been disturbed (e.g. construction sites, subdivisions, and transportation corridors) may create acid rock drainage. In many localities, the liquid that drains from coal stocks, coal handling facilities, coal washeries, and coal waste tips can be highly acidic, and in such cases it is treated as acid rock drainage. The same type of chemical reactions and processes may occur through the disturbance of acid sulfate soils formed under coastal or estuarine conditions after the last major sea level rise, and constitutes a similar environmental hazard. Historically, the acidic discharges from active or abandoned mines were called acid mine drainage, or AMD. The term acid rock drainage, or ARD, was introduced in the 1980s and 1990s to indicate that acidic drainage can originate from sources other than mines. For example, a paper presented in 1991 at a major international conference on this subject was titled: "The Prediction of Acid Rock Drainage - Lessons from the Database" Both AMD and ARD refer to low pH or acidic waters caused by the oxidation of sulfide minerals, though ARD is the more generic name. In cases where drainage from a mine is not acidic and has dissolved metals or metalloids, or was originally acidic, but has been neutralized along its flow path, then it is described as "Neutral Mine Drainage", "Mining-Influenced Water" or otherwise. None of these other names have gained general acceptance. Sub-surface mining often progresses below the water table, so water must be constantly pumped out of the mine in order to prevent flooding. When a mine is abandoned, the pumping ceases, and water floods the mine. This introduction of water is the initial step in most acid rock drainage situations. Tailings piles or ponds, mine waste rock dumps, and coal spoils are also an important source of acid mine drainage. After being exposed to air and water, oxidation of metal sulfides (often pyrite, which is iron-sulfide) within the surrounding rock and overburden generates acidity. Colonies of bacteria and archaea greatly accelerate the decomposition of metal ions, although the reactions also occur in an abiotic environment. These microbes, called extremophiles for their ability to survive in harsh conditions, occur naturally in the rock, but limited water and oxygen supplies usually keep their numbers low. Special extremophiles known as Acidophiles especially favor the low pH levels of abandoned mines. In particular, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is a key contributor to pyrite oxidation. Metal mines may generate highly acidic discharges where the ore is a sulfide mineral or is associated with pyrite. In these cases the predominant metal ion may not be iron but rather zinc, copper, or nickel. The most commonly mined ore of copper, chalcopyrite, is itself a copper-iron-sulfide and occurs with a range of other sulfides. Thus, copper mines are often major culprits of acid mine drainage. At some mines, acidic drainage is detected within 2–5 years after mining begins, whereas at other mines, it is not detected for several decades. In addition, acidic drainage may be generated for decades or centuries after it is first detected. For this reason, acid mine drainage is considered a serious long-term environmental problem associated with mining.

Approximately 150,000 cubic meters of mining debris from waste tip No. 7 surged down the mountainside, of which 40,000 cubic metres swept in to the village. Within seconds a large area of the village was inundated with a thick slurry up to 12 metres deep. A farm and twenty houses on Moy Road disappeared under the surging waste, but the most devastation was wrought on Pantglas Junior School. The landslide smashed into the school and filled the classrooms, which were on the side of the school facing the mountain, with rubble. The children and teachers, who had only arrived a few minutes earlier, were buried alive. Over half the children enrolled at the school died. Hundreds of people including parents, miners and rescue workers struggled to rescue those trapped beneath the waste. Their efforts were hampered by the continuing flow of water and mud from the tip as well as the lack of space in which to work due to the number of people who had descended on the village to help. The National Coal Board and its chairman, Alfred Lord Robens, were heavily criticised in the aftermath of the disaster. Lord Robens didn’t go to the scene until the evening of the next day, and claimed that the disaster was caused by ‘natural unknown springs’ despite evidence that the NCB was fully aware that the ground beneath the tips was unstable. The remaining tips were only removed after government intervention.

Take action now - add your name to a letter direct to the Northern Territory Chief Minister asking him to stick to his commitment to close McArthur River Mine by October 1 if the company fails to pay an increased rehabilitation bond to clean up the river! Sign here: http://ecnt.org.au/clean-up-mcarthur-river-chief-minister-giles/ Glencore’s open pit lead and zinc mine in the bed of the McArthur River is 50km south of the town of Borroloola. The river, controversially diverted around the expanding mine pit, is the lifeblood of the Gulf of Carpenteria. Residents, tourists and recreational fishers eat the river’s abundant fish, and local pastoral stations and communities rely on its freshwater. Last year the mine’s waste rock dump caught fire due to reactive chemistry. The mine’s Independent Monitor warned, if not fixed, major acid metalliferous drainage problems would leach sulphuric acid into surrounding waterways. The mine’s leaking tailings dam was found to be at risk of collapse and in 2014 high levels of lead were found in local fish stocks and 400 cattle had to be destroyed after the Department of Mines and Energy found cattle contaminated with lead after accessing a contaminated creek on the McArthur River Mine site. Glencore is in breach of its operating conditions, continuing to discharge contaminated water in the McArthur River at double allowable limits. In response to revelations of major risks posed by its reckless mining activities, Glencore has so far refused to pay an increased rehabilitation bond to ensure site clean up. Freedom of Information requests by the McArthur River’s Aboriginal Traditional Owners have revealed internal NT Government memos contained warnings that Glencore’s actions would have ‘catastrophic consequences’ for downstream environment and communities. These warnings have been ignored by the NT Government. The NT Government has issued a warning that without a commitment to fund rehabilitation by an October 1 2015 deadline it may withdraw Glencore's authority to mine. McArthur River region Traditional Owners and the local community are calling on the NT Government to ensure Glencore pays for the comprehensive clean up and transition to a post-mining phase of operations to protect the river and local communities from the company’s reckless actions. Stand with us. More information at www.ECNT.org

From the DIRTIEST Cities, to nuclear wastelands ; these are the 10 MOST TOXIC Places On Earth. HEY YOU ! There are more awesome videos being made every week, like and subscribe to World Unearthed so you don't miss a beat ! 10.La Oroya | Peru 9.Dhaka | Bangladesh 8. Norilsk | Russia The city has been branded as the most polluted city in Russia, where the snow is black, air tastes like sulfur and rivers run red. Life expectancy of employees in the smelter is 10 years below the Russian average. By some estimates, 1% of the world`s sulfur dioxide emission comes from the Norilsk nickel mines. Nearly 500 tons of copper and nickel as well as two million tons of sulfur dioxide are released into the air, annually. In 2016 the nearby Daldykan River turned red and the evidence pointed to privately owned wastewater pipes. The company accepted the responsibility while claiming that the coloring was of no danger to humans or wildlife. The smelting plant was in the process of being modernized and steps are being taken in order to reduce pollution. 7.Nevada Proving Grounds | Nevada Nevada Proving Grounds, now known as the Nevada Test Site or Nevada National Security Site is a U. S. Department of Energy reservation in Nye County, Nevada, 65 miles northwest from Las Vegas. The tests stopped in 1994 but the area is still extremely radioactive. Even though the radioactivity in the water is gradually declining, isotopes like plutonium and uranium could pose risks to workers or future settlers on the NNSS for tens of thousands of years. 6.Shanghai | China In December of 2013, Shanghai suffered a great spike in air pollution when the so called “2013 Eastern China Smog” occurred. The pollution levels were between 23 and 31 times the international standard. Nearly one-third of all government vehicles were pulled off the streets, construction work was halted, student`s outdoor activities were suspended, flights were cancelled or diverted. And even though air pollution in Shanghai is substantial by the world standard, it is still lower than other cities in China. Among the top 500 most polluted cities in the world, Chinese cities hold 179 spots. Thankfully, China is taking extremely serious measures to reduce pollution, closing coal factories, smelters and mills while switching over to more eco-friendly energy sources. 5.Northwest Arctic | Alaska Out of all the states in the union, Alaska produces the most toxins, outranking every other state by nearly 3 times. A closer look reveals that 91% of all of Alaska`s emissions come from one county, Northwest Arctic, most of it originating from one city – Kotzebue, population 7,500. So how is it possible that a tiny city, in the middle of nowhere Alaska is responsible for so much pollution? Well, just 90 miles from Kotzebue is Red Dog Mine, the largest source of zinc in the world. It was established in 1987 and each year, it releases 756 million pounds of toxins into the environment. 4.Asse II mine | Germany The Asse II mine opened between 1906, initially extracting potash (until 1925) and producing rock salt (1916-1964). But during the period between 1964 and 1995 the mine was used as a storage of radioactive waste. Now, this mine has been abandoned, with barrels of low-level and medium-level waste in a jumbled heap, some of it not even contained properly. There`s fears that the mine could fill with water and authorities are rushing to remove the waste with remotely operated vehicles since it is unsafe for workers to go in there. 3. | New Mexico The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s history is relatively short, it became operational in 1999. The facility is used to store transuranic waste left over from nuclear weapons research. Transuranic waste consists of clothing, tools, rags, residues, debris, soil and other items contaminated with radioactive elements, mostly plutonium. 2.Pacific Proving Grounds | Pacific Ocean Pacific Proving Grounds is the name given to a number of sites on the Marshall Islands and in the Pacific Ocean which were used for nuclear testing between 1946 and 1962. The US conducted 105 atmospheric and underwater nuclear tests in the Pacific. 1.Pripyat | Ukraine 50000 People used to live here... Now it's a ghost town. Radiation levels were so high that Nuclear Power stations in Sweden, Finland and Norway detected the anomaly. Twenty years later, the area is still uninhabitable. Except for the 197 people living in 11 villages scattered in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The average age is 63.

Two linked dramas look at the lives of those living in a Yorkshire colliery community. The first part, Meet The People, takes a look at preparations for a visit by Prince Charles, as management try to enlist the miners help in sprucing up the pithead. Completely different in tone, Part Two, Back To Reality, is set one month later as an underground explosion has disastrous consequences -- above and below ground. For these episodes of BBC films, Loach was reunited with playwright Barry Hines and producer Tony Garnett for the first time since they worked together on Kes. Filmed on location at the disused Thorpe Hesley pit, Part One saw the unusual casting of several northern comics including Jackie Shinn, Duggie Brown, Stan Richards and Bobby Knutt.

The United States produces 2,200 tons of nuclear waste each year…and no one knows what to do with it. The federal government has long promised, but never delivered, a safe place for nuclear power plants to store their spent fuel. This means that radioactive waste is piling up all over the country. We visited one of the worst places where the waste is stuck: a beachside power plant uncomfortably close to both San Diego and Los Angeles. Thirteen states are trying to get a judge to block Obama’s last-minute environmental regulations. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/go "Thirteen states are asking a federal judge to block a last-minute Obama administration environmental rule aimed at preventing coal mines from fouling thousands of miles of streams. The states on Tuesday filed a petition in U.S. District Court seeking an injunction against the Stream Protection Rule, a proposal from the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. The rule would prohibit changes to land near coal mines, which would stop miners from dumping debris near streams and rivers. It would also require new testing and monitoring of streams near coal mines. Attorneys general filing the suit said the rule violates the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, which gives authority to regulate coal mines to the states, rather than to the federal government. “This rule tramples states’ retention of sovereign authority under the Tenth Amendment and seeks to destroy an entire industry, displacing hardworking men and women and setting a precedent to disregard states’ own understanding of major industries within their borders,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) said in a statement. In a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Paxton and the 12 other plaintiffs asked Congress to overturn the new rule under the Congressional Review Act. They said the Office of Surface Mining failed to consult with states through proper channels. “This overreaching, last-gasp Obama administration regulation goes far beyond what the law permits,” Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine (R) said.”* Read more here: http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/314809-states-sue-to-block-last-minute-obama-environmental-rule Hosts: Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola Cast: Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. This is a memorial music video to mark the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster. In 1966 the Aberfan disaster was the worst mining disaster to happen in Wales, UK. 144 people lost their lives, and 116 of the victims were children aged between 7 and 10. The coal board had been dumping it's waste from the coal mine on top of a hill over looking Aberfan; but there was a problem with where they were dumping the waste! Underneath the mountain was a natural spring and the mountain was known for having streams, which made it unsafe. The residents had been complaining to the coal board and local council for years, but nothing was done. Sadly in Aberfan in 1966 it had been having heavy rain for days, this water soaked into the waste and caused a landslide! Thousands of tonnes of coal waste went crashing down the mountain into the village of Aberfan. Several houses got destroyed but the worst thing was that this waste went crashing into a junior school, it resulted in the death of 116 children. The children were buried alive, most of them died from asphyxiation (suffocation), and others had fractured skulls and multiple crush injuries. When the waste went crashing into the school, it was 40 feet high, it took down the building walls which resulted in the roof caving in; all this was on top of the children. The saddest part of the story was, if it happened just a few minutes earlier the children would not have been in the classroom, and if it had happened just a few hours later, the children wouldn't have been in the school as they'd of broken up for half term. This memorial video contains the shocking and heart breaking images from the Aberfan disaster. The image of the clock is the classroom clock that was dug up out of the wreckage, it stopped at the precise time of the impact. The name of the school was 'Pantglas junior school', it was pulled down after the disaster and it has been replaced with a memorial garden. The music playing in the video is, 'Pie Jesu', written by Faure, and performed live by Welsh soprano 'Lisa-Lee Dark'. The live recording was taken during a performance Lisa-Lee did during a funeral Requiem mass in 2014. We felt that this song perfectly fitted in with the sadness of the disaster. The English lyrics to the song are; 'Sweet Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world. Grant them eternal peace'. On Friday 21st October at 9:15am, there will be a one minute silence in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the Aberfan disaster. Never forget Aberfan. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberfan_disaster

(27 Oct 2018) Protesters on Saturday blocked a railway line leading to a large strip coal mine in western Germany that has become a cause celebre for environmentalists amid plans to clear part of a neighbouring forest to expand the facility. Another group of about 40 people occupied an excavator at the Hambach mine near Cologne, eight of them climbing onto the machine. Activists aimed to disrupt mining operations at the site run by energy company RWE. Thousands of people took part in Saturday's demonstration, prompting police to use water cannons to stop demonstrators crossing a closed highway and heading toward the mine site. Separately, employees of RWE were demonstrating for their jobs to be preserved. The area has seen repeated protests amid plans to clear part of the neighbouring Hambach Forest to make way for an expansion of the lignite mine. Earlier this month, a German court blocked the felling of the forest, saying it needs time to examine whether the woodland deserves protected status. Environmentalists argue that it does because of the bats that live there. They also say the continued extraction of coal runs contrary to Germany's goal of reducing carbon emissions to prevent global warming. Produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, this fascinating movie looks at copper and copper mining in the 1960s, when the American mines were at peak production and financial troubles loomed. The film looks at the future of mining, including the development of efficiencies to keep mines in business. Open pit mining techniques are shown, with a focus on the Southwest. At 2:00, Bingham Canyon and the Utah Mining Company pit (also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine) is seen. At 2:40, various open pit mines are seen which use either trucks or trains to remove ore. Although they are not named, it's likely that one of them is the Phelps-Dodge mine at Bisbee, Arizona. At 5:40, exploratory core drilling is shown. At 6:30, exploration programs are shown including at 6:43, an engineering team that maps mine development. Various drill systems are seen at 9:00, including the rotary drill. At 10:30, preparations are seen towards using explosives with the burying of dynamite and detonators for excavation. At 12:12, loading of explosives is seen with an emphasis on safe handling. At 14:51, a cage drill is shown in use allowing rocks to be drilled in the field (without being moved by shovels) for explosive removal. At 16:00, a small 4.5 yard bucket shovel is shown being used to move blast debris. At 16:00, a 6-yard loading shovel is seen. At 17:49, overburden waste from the pit is loaded on a train so that it can be moved and dumped at a remote area. At 18:50, a 13-yard shovel is seen in use with a large truck also in use. As the narrator explains, these large size equipment is needed to lower unit costs of copper, and are an economic necessity given the modern financial conditions. At 19:52, the motorized wheel principle of new types of mining trucks is seen, and the narrator comments that next generation trucks will carry over 100 tons of ore. At 22:55, a grader is seen working the mine roads, and the narrator comments about how tires wear out so quickly on the job that they account for up to 1% of mining costs. At 24:30, railroad trains are shown on the move at a mine, moving 60-125 ton per car loads. The narrator comments further on the use of railroads in pit mining. At 26:30, a large shovel is seen loading a train, sprinkling the loads with water to hold down dust. The large boulders in the loads make this type of work dangerous. At 27:16, ore loads are dumped into a crusher at a mill site. At 27:40, a rail waste dump into a slag pile is seen. At 28:00, a train-based grader is used to clear tracks of debris. The narrator notes that the mining railroads are some of the busiest in the USA and the world. At 28:44, new tracks are installed due to various demands, and mechanized railroad ballast systems are used for fast track installation. At 31:20, a skip hoist is seen being used to take ore from a deep, small pit to the surface. At 32:50, a series of leeching ponds is seen, with water percolated through the ponds to precipitate copper. At 34:00, a machine shop is seen at the mine, providing repair and maintenance services at the mine. At 35:40, a heavy repair part is unloaded at the mine using a power shovel. At 36:00, a research laboratory is seen at work, developing new uses of copper in the atomic and other industries. At 36:40, the IBM Ramac computer is seen. The IBM 305 RAMAC was the first commercial computer that used a moving-head hard disk drive (magnetic disk storage) for secondary storage. The film ends with a shot of a heap of pennies, with the narrator noting that the industry is working hard to expand production to fulfill future needs. The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine, is extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world and produced more copper than any other mine in history – more than 19 million tons. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (970 m) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). Marion Power Shovel Company was an American firm that designed, manufactured and sold steam shovels, power shovels, blast hole drills, excavators, and dragline excavators. The company was a major supplier of shovels for the construction of the Panama Canal. Founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, the company grew through sales and acquisitions throughout the 20th century. The company changed its name to Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the industry's change from steam power to diesel power. Public domain film from the Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_gas Coal gas (also town gas and illumination gas) is a flammable gaseous fuel made by the destructive distillation of coal and contains a variety of calorific gases including hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane and volatile hydrocarbons together with small quantities of non-calorific gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. It was the primary source of gaseous fuel for the United States and the UK until the widespread adoption of natural gas during the 1940s and 1950s in the US, and the late 1960s and 1970s in the UK. It was used for lighting, cooking, and heating and was often supplied to households via a municipally owned piped distribution system. Originally created as a by-product of the coking process, its use developed during the 19th and early 20th centuries tracking the industrial revolution and urbanization. By-products from the production process included coal tars and ammonia, which were important chemical feedstock for the dye and chemical industry with a wide range of artificial dye colours being made from coal gas and coal tar. Facilities where the gas was produced were often known as a manufactured gas plant (MGP) or a gasworks. The discovery of large reserves of natural gas in the North Sea off the UK coast during the early 1960s led to the expensive conversion or replacement of most of the nation's gas cookers and gas heaters, with the exception of Northern Ireland, from the late 1960s onwards. The production process is distinct, both physically and chemically, from that used to create a range of gaseous fuels known variously as manufactured gas, syngas, hygas, Dowson gas, and producer gas. These gases are made by partial combustion of a wide variety of feed stocks in some mixture of air, oxygen, or steam, to reduce the latter to hydrogen and carbon dioxide although some destructive distillation may also occur... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coke_(fuel) Coke is a fuel with few impurities and a high carbon content. It is the solid carbonaceous material derived from destructive distillation of low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal. Cokes made from coal are grey, hard, and porous. While coke can be formed naturally, the commonly used form is man-made... Volatile constituents of the coal—including water, coal-gas, and coal-tar—are driven off by baking in an airless furnace or oven at temperatures as high as 2,000 °C (3,600 °F) but usually around 1000--1100 °C (1832--2012 °F). This fuses together the fixed carbon and residual ash. Most modern facilities have "by-product" coking ovens. Today, the volatile hydrocarbons are mainly used, after purification, in a separate combustion process to generate energy. Non by-product coking furnaces or coke furnaces (ovens) burn the hydrocarbon gases produced by the coke-making process to drive the carbonization process. Bituminous coal must meet a set of criteria for use as coking coal, determined by particular coal assay techniques. These include moisture content, ash content, sulfur content, volatile content, tar, and plasticity... The greater the volatile matter in coal, the more by-product can be produced. It is generally considered that levels of 26-29% of volatile matter in the coal blend are good for coking purposes... Natural coke is formed when a coal seam is intersected by a volcanic intrusion... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunt's_Point Hunts Point is a neighborhood located on a peninsula in the South Bronx in New York City... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_Edison ...In 1823, Con Edison's earliest corporate predecessor, the New York Gas Light Company, was founded by a consortium of New York City investors. A year later, it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1884, six gas companies combined into the Consolidated Gas Company.... Con Edison's electric business also dates back to 1882, when Thomas Edison's Edison Illuminating Company of New York began supplying electricity to 59 customers in a square-mile area in lower Manhattan. After the "War of Currents", there were more than 30 companies generating and distributing electricity in New York City and Westchester County. But by 1920 there were far fewer, and the New York Edison Company (then part of Consolidated Gas) was clearly the leader. In 1936, with electric sales far outstripping gas sales, the company incorporated and the name was changed to Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. The years that followed brought further amalgamations as Consolidated Edison...

One year after 3 million gallons of toxic wastewater spilled into three states from an abandoned Colorado gold mine, the Navajo Nation sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday. In a court filing, the Navajo tribe alleged the EPA and other parties "recklessly" burrowed into the Gold King Mine in 2015. The action resulted in the release of waste into water upstream from the tribe's land. A year later, the waterways remain contaminated. According to the complaint that also names EPA contractor Environmental Restoration, the Kinross Gold Corp and Sunnyside Gold Corp, the Navajo people have yet to be compensated. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/G18J_btMw1M/us-usa-environment-navajo-idUSKCN10R1IL http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

In northern Arizona's Black Mesa region, many Navajo are hoping President Barack Obama's policy to move away from fossil fuels will help reduce environmental and health concerns from the coal industry. Navajo residents in Northern Arizona have been urging officials to do more to clean up what they describe as harmful air and water pollution. But energy officials there won't be immediate help for the Black Mesa region and other parts of Indian country affected by coal. Growing energy demands and the still developing alternative energy industry mean coal will have to play a big role in supplying electricity for years to come.

Video Transcript: Across North America, businesses and governments are seeking cleaner and economical alternative energy sources. Waste Management sees waste as a resource and is a leader in the development of innovative technologies to extract the value from the waste stream. One of these technologies is Processed Engineered Fuel, or SpecFUEL, which is produced by Waste Management. SpecFUEL is both an environmentally beneficial and economic alternative for coal and petroleum coke. SpecFUEL is an alternative fuel manufactured from high-energy value materials extracted from post-recycled municipal solid waste. Using mechanical sorting equipment, waste is segregated with materials of value, extracted to be recycled. The remaining residual materials are shredded, dried, and densified to create an alternative fuel. The fuel burns cleaner than coal and petroleum coke and can be co-combusted with or replace coal in its entirety. This alternative fuel is manufactured under strict engineering controls and designed to meet strict end-user solid fuel specifications with virtually no process emissions. Compared to refuse-derived fuel, SpecFUEL is a refined, uniform product with low ash and moisture, and a higher and more consistent BTU heating value. It's also easy to transport. Processed engineered fuel is a technology being used in Europe and Waste Management has developed a commercial production facility located at its Covel Gardens Disposal Facility in San Antonio, Texas. The facility has a processing capacity of 300,000 tons of waste per year and can generate 165,000 tons of fuel per year. The fuel generated at this facility is being used by industrial customers in the surrounding area. The economic benefits of SpecFUEL are numerous. SpecFUEL is ideal for any industrial user that is using coal to produce energy or steam, looking to reduce pollutant emissions, and make use of a product that is diverted from landfills. This includes companies in chemical, pulp and paper, textiles, pharmaceutical and metal manufacturing, as well as kiln based cement plants, utilities and district energy facilities. SpecFUEL supplements or replaces coal or petroleum coke to produce steam, electricity, or heat. It's a low fossil carbon, high BTU energy source, may be eligible for Renewable Energy Credits in some states, and can be used in existing energy facilities with little or no modification of solid fuel systems. For industrial users of coal and petroleum coke, SpecFUEL is a low sulfur emission energy source. It can also be part of a closed-loop system, allowing customers to use their own waste as a fuel source. "The system converts up to 55% of the waste materials processed into engineered fuel pellets. Of the remaining residuals, up to 10% could be recycled. Collectively, up to 65% of the waste materials processed could be diverted from landfill disposal." Waste Management is also exploring the diversion of food and yard waste, which could add another 25% of the remaining materials diverted from the waste stream. A number of states recognized waste-based fuel as an alternative energy source and allow electricity producers using it to earn Renewable Energy Credits. "SpecFUEL is an example of our company's commitment to new and innovative Waste Technologies to extract value from the waste stream." Waste Management is your energy partner for a processed, engineered fuel that is both an environmentally beneficial and economic replacement for coal and petroleum coke. Processed Engineered Fuel, or SpecFUEL, produced by Waste Management.

It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coals, which also include bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92.1% and 98%... Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame. Anthracite is categorized into standard grade, which is used mainly in power generation, and high grade (HG) and ultra high grade (UHG), the principal uses of which are in the metallurgy sector. Anthracite accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, and is mined in only a few countries around the world. China accounts for the lion's share of production; other producers are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Vietnam, the UK, Australia and the US. Total production in 2010 was 670 million tons... Terminology Other terms which refer to anthracite are black coal, hard coal, stone coal (not to be confused with the German Steinkohle or Dutch steenkool which are broader terms meaning all varieties of coal of a stonelike hardness and appearance, like bituminous coal and often anthracite as well, as opposed to lignite, which is softer), blind coal (in Scotland), Kilkenny coal (in Ireland), crow coal (or craw coal from its shiny black appearance), and black diamond. "Blue Coal" is the term for a once-popular and trademarked brand... Anthracite is similar in appearance to the mineraloid jet and is sometimes used as a jet imitation. Anthracite differs from ordinary bituminous coal by its greater hardness, its higher relative density of 1.3--1.4, and lustre, which is often semi-metallic with a mildly brown reflection. It contains a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter... The moisture content of fresh-mined anthracite generally is less than 15 percent. The heat content of anthracite ranges from 22 to 28 million Btu per short ton (26 to 33 MJ/kg) on a moist, mineral-matter-free basis... Anthracite may be considered to be a transition stage between ordinary bituminous and graphite, produced by the more or less complete elimination of the volatile constituents of the former... History of mining and use In southwest Wales, anthracite has been burned as a domestic fuel since at least medieval times. It was mined near Saundersfoot. In the United States, anthracite coal history began in 1790 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with the discovery of coal made by the hunter Necho Allen in what is now known as the Coal Region... By 1795, an anthracite-fired iron furnace had been built on the Schuylkill River... In spring 1808, John and Abijah Smith shipped the first commercially mined load of anthracite down the Susquehanna River from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, marking the birth of commercial anthracite mining in the United States. From that first mine, production rose to an all-time high of over 100 million tons in 1917. From the late 19th century until the 1950s, anthracite was the most popular fuel for heating homes and other buildings in the northern United States... Many large public buildings, such as schools, were heated with anthracite-burning furnaces through the 1980s... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mining The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery... Coal mining has had a lot of developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers...
