2. The Great Train Robbery (1903)

10:24
"Most histories regard The Great Train Robbery as the first Western, initiating a genre that was in a few short years to become the most popular in American cinema. Made by the Edison Company in November 1903, The Great Train Robbery was the most commercially successful film of the pre-Griffith period of American cinema and spawned a host of imitations. What is exceptional about Edwin S. Porter's film is the degree of narrative sophistication, given the early date. There are over a dozen separate scenes, each further developing the story. In the opening scene, two masked robbers force a telegraph operator to send a false message so that the train will make an unscheduled stop. In the next scene, bandits board the train. The robbers enter the mail car, and, after a fight, open the safe. In the following scene, two robbers overpower the driver and fireman of the train and throw one of them off. Next the robbers stop the train and hold up the passengers. One runs away and is shot. The robbers then escape aboard the engine, and in the subsequent scene we see them mount horses and ride off. Meanwhile, the telegraph operator on the train sends a message calling for assistance. In a saloon, a newcomer is being forced to dance at gunpoint, but when the message arrives everyone grabs their rifles and exits. Cut to the robbers pursued by a posse. There is a shoot-out, and the robbers are killed. There's one extra shot, the best known in the film, showing one of the robbers firing point blank out of the screen. This was, it seems, sometimes shown at the start of the film, sometimes at the end. Either way, it gave the spectator a sense of being directly in the line of fire. One actor in The Great Train Robbery was G.M. Anderson (real name Max Aronson). Among other parts, he played the passenger who is shot. Anderson was shortly to become the first star of Westerns, appearing as Bronco Billy in over a hundred films, beginning in 1907. In later years some have challenged the claim of The Great Train Robbery to be regarded as the first Western, on the grounds either that it is not the first or it is not a Western. It is certainly true that there are earlier films with a Western theme, such as Thomas Edison's Cripple Creek Bar-Room Scene (1899), but they do not have the fully developed narrative of Porter's film. It's also true that it has its roots both in stage plays incorporating spectacular railroad scenes, and in other films of daring robberies that weren't Westerns. Nor can its claim to being a true Western be based on authentic locations, because The Great Train Robbery was shot on the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad in New Jersey. But train robberies had since the days of Jesse James been part of Western lore, and other iconic elements such as six-shooters, cowboy hats, and horses all serve to give the film a genuine Western feel." 9 Of New York's Most INSANE Unsolved Mysteries. 1. The Murder of Arnold Rothstein at the Park Central Hotel. Known by many names – A. R., Mr. Big, The Fixer, The Big Bankroll, The Man Uptown, and The Brain - Arnold Rothstein seemed more myth than man.... 2. The Wall Street Bombing. At the stroke of noon on Sept. 16, 1920, a bomb exploded along Wall Street, killing 38 people and maiming hundreds more. It was the worst terrorist bombing in the United States until the Oklahoma City attack in 1995, the worst in New York until the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.... 3. The 1964 World’s Fair's Buried Underground Home It's a spacious, secure home that could probably fetch a pretty penny on today's NYC real estate market - the only problem is that no one knows if it still exists. The mystery centers around The Underground World Home.... 4. The American Museum of Natural History Jewel Heist On the night of October 29, 1964, three young Americans from Miami, Florida, made the national headlines in what America called the 'jewel heist of the century'. The target was a jewel collection taken from the American Museum of Natural History in New York... 5. The Lost Eagles of Pennsylvania Station. The obliteration of the McKim, Mead & White-designed Pennsylvania Station in 1963, just a half-century after its completion, helped galvanize grassroots preservation efforts that eventually led to New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner signing the Landmarks Law on April 19, 1965.... 6. The Lost Locomotive in the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel. "With continued silence from the DOT, we are dead in the water, with the potential of a major historical find right under our feet in Brooklyn." Earlier this month, Bob Diamond.... 7. The Cow Tunnels of New York City In the late 19th century, there were some two million cows being herded in the streets of New York City. It’s long been rumored that underground “cow tunnels” were created to ease the congestion, but evidence (archeological or otherwise) has been hard to come by and exact locations have not been verified... 8. The Lost Bogardus Building A building that once stood in downtown New York City in the Washington Market area was stolen not once, but twice in its history. The area was targeted for urban renewal in the 1960s, but because the Bogardus Building.... 9. The Cornerstone of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Much is known about the cornerstone of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. As the Archdiocese of New York embarks on a five-year, $175 million renovation of what has been described as the nation’s largest Roman Catholic Gothic sanctuary, architects and historians have meticulously reviewed every detail of James Renwick Jr.’s original blueprints..... McLintock! (1963 comedy western)

02:07:12
George Washington McLintock, "GW" to friends and foes alike, is a cattle baron and the richest man in the territory. He anxiously awaits the return of his daughter Becky who has been away at school for the last two years. He's also surprised to see that his wife Katherine has also returned. She had left him some years before without really explaining what he done but she does make the point of saying that she's returned to take their daughter back to the State Capitol with her. GW is highly respected by everyone around him including the farmers who are pouring into the territories with free grants of land and the Indians who are under threat of being relocated to another reservation. Between his wife, his headstrong daughter, the crooked land agent and the thieving government Indian agent, GW tries to keep the peace and do what is best for everyone. Written by garykmcd

Illinois Adventure #1301 "Franklin County Jail Museum"

10:22
The Historic Jail Museum in Benton serves as the home of the Franklin County Tourism Bureau. This beautifully restored 1905 structure houses memorabilia of the gang era from the days of prohibition, as well as mementos from famous Benton natives, including General John A. Logan, actor John Malkovich, NBA basketball star Doug Collins, and Beatle George Harrison, who visited his sister in Benton in the summer of 1963. Special Mentions: The jail became a symbol for the gang era in Southern Illinois during Prohibition, and became the last stop for Charlie Birger, the last man publically hanged in Illinois on April 19, 1928 for the 1926 murder of West City's mayor, Joe Adams. A new jail was built in 1991, and the old jail was placed on the register of Historic Places on Feb. 1, 1999.

Runaway Truck on US 160 Wolf Creek Pass

01:29
With stretches as wide as four lanes, US 160/Wolf Creek Pass can deceive drivers into thinking there is ample room to navigate it. Adding high speeds to this miscalculation creates dangerous conditions—particularly for commercial vehicle drivers. Commercial trucks traveling downhill on the pass should go no faster than 25 MPH. This video, captured by a CDOT Wolf Creek Pass maintenance patrolman, shows a semi-truck that picked up too much speed, more than 60 MPH at one point. Rather than keeping the vehicle in a low gear, the driver was "riding the brakes" which resulted in brake failure. When finally coming to a very fortunate stop, the brakes were smoking. The driver should have used one of two escape ramps available for stopping runaway trucks. This situation could have ended up much worse – A CRASH and the potential loss of the irreplaceable life of the driver or the lives of those with whom he shares the road.

Where did your help go in 2016?

02:08
2016 has been characterized by some significant events, the long-term impacts of which are still uncertain. But what we do know is that there remains a critical challenge for us in improving the lives of those living in poverty: from life-saving responses in humanitarian emergencies; to supporting individuals and communities to find work and build livelihoods; to challenging the systems and structures that keep people poor and drive inequality. Over the last year Oxfam, working closely with local, national and global partners, has been at the forefront of enabling positive change – thanks to the commitment and generosity of supporters like you. Bringing hope to some of the bleakest situations, empowering women and men to create their own futures, and holding governments to account for the decisions that affect the most vulnerable. Thank you for your support this year. Thank you for playing a part in improving the lives of millions of women, men and children around the world. And thank you for continuing to believe in a world without poverty. https://www.oxfam.org/donate
