What does MINING ENGINEERING mean? MINING ENGINEERING meaning - MINING ENGINEERING definition - MINING ENGINEERING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Mining engineering is an engineering discipline that applies science and technology to the extraction of minerals from the earth. Mining engineering is associated with many other disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and surveying. A mining engineer may manage any phase of mining operations – from exploration and discovery of the mineral resource, through feasibility study, mine design, development of plans, production and operations to mine closure. With the process of Mineral extraction, some amount of waste and uneconomic material are generated which are the primary source of pollution in the vicinity of mines. Mining activities by their nature cause a disturbance of the natural environment in and around which the minerals are located. Mining engineers must therefore be concerned not only with the production and processing of mineral commodities, but also with the mitigation of damage to the environment both during and after mining as a result of the change in the mining area. Mining Engineers in India are earning relatively high salaries in comparison to many other professions. The average salary for a Mining Engineer in India is $15,250. However, the salaries are always highly determined by the level of skill, where the organisation is based and which organisation you are working for. In comparison to salaries of Mining Engineer’s working in other regions, such as Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, the salaries are dismal, however when comparing salaries from one region to another, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration, such as the cost of living etc.In the United States, there are an estimated 6,630 employed mining engineers. The mean yearly salary for a mining engineer in the U.S. is $90,070 .

Haroon Bhorat, Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town, discusses his study of the effects a 2003 South African law introducing minimum wages had on the country's agricultural sector employment and wages. Data gathered from before and after the law's introduction shows that employment actually fell by about 200,000 workers for a 17 percent decline after the minimum wage was introduced. But, at the same time, wages actually increased 20 percent on average across the country. To Bhorat, this shows that at the intensive margins of the labor force, like total hours of work, employers did not adjust by reducing hours of work to retain the overall workforce. One benefit to the law was that employers did start to offer workers written contracts, which provides greater job security than before the minimum wage was introduced.

We zoom in on the mining sector, that has been under pressure. You'll remember that Implats announced recently it may have to cut more jobs due to the economic conditions. Well, mining production fell in South Africa in May according to figures out today. It fell meaning the mining sector contracted by 2.6 percent in May, after falling by 4.4 percent in April and a shocking fall of more than 8 percent a month before that. That's three months of contraction - although the figure was better than expected. Manufacturing data rose and maybe that's helping the Rand today. It has gained a full 2 per cent against the dollar as the concerns around the global trade war ease again. In a moment we'll be speaking to Mike Schussler about putting this data in context. And the context is that there have been signs of late that there could be a recession in South Africa. Remember the economy contracted in the first quarter. Could there be another contraction or is the fact that today's data is better than expected meaning we're out of the woods? For more news, visit: sabcnews.com

Four women in the field share insights from their careers in industry and academia Women in data science come from a wide range of backgrounds, as evidenced by the women on the career panel during the 3rd annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference at Stanford. Ziya Ma of Intel comes from a computational sciences background, Jennifer Prendki of Atlassian comes from a particle physics background, Bhavani Thuraisingham comes from a math and computing background, and Elena Grewal of Airbnb did her PhD in education at Stanford. As the field of data science grows to touch nearly everything we do, this diversity of thought is illustrative of the fact that there are multiple pathways into data science. The 40-minute panel touched on the importance of developing domain expertise in order to make an impact in the field and also touted the importance of a growth mindset. In a space that’s evolving day by day, the panelists agreed that as they look to grow their teams, they are looking for people who are willing to be challenged and who are lifelong learners.

Who wants to be Data Scientist 2. Who are working as analyst / software developer but wants to be Data Scientist What is Data Science ? Data science is used to extract patterns or insights from data to predict future or to understand customer behavior and so on. Data science is a "concept to unify statistics, data analysis and their related methods" in order to "understand and analyze actual phenomena" with data Mining large amounts of structured and unstructured data to identify patterns can help an organization to reduce costs, increase efficiencies, recognize new market opportunities and increase the organization's competitive advantage. Some Data Science and machine learning Applications Netflix uses data science & machine learning to mine movie viewing patterns to understand what drives user interest, and uses that to make decisions on which Netflix original series to produce. Companies like Flipkart and Amazon uses data science and machine learning to understand the customer shopping behavior to do better recommendations. Gmail's spam filter uses data science (machine learning algorithm) to process incoming mail and determines if a message is junk or not.. Proctor & Gamble utilizes data science (machine learning ) models to more clearly understand future demand, which help plan for production levels more optimally. Why Programming Won't Work in some Cases?? Have you ever thought of the scenario where all the cars will be moving without a driver that means something like automated machines say for example automatic washing machine. But there is a difference. 1. For automatic washing machine,we can write programs for the washing machine functionality. 2. For automated cars without drivers in high traffic.Just imagine ,how complex and dangerous it will be when someone starts coding /programming for such functionalities. For cars to automate we would require something which is called "Machine Learning " In this course, we are first going to first discuss Data Structures, etc. in R like : 1. Vectors 2. Matrices 3. Data Frames 4. Factors 5. Numerical/Categorical Variables 6. List 7. How to convert matrix into data frame Programming in R Data Visualization Then implementation/working of machine learning models like 1. Linear Regression 2. Decision Tree 3. Random Forest 4.Neural Networks 5. Deep learning 6. H2o framework 7. Cross validation /How to avoid Over fitting 8. Dimensionality Reduction Techniques All the materials for this data science & machine learning course are FREE. You can download and install R, with simple commands on Windows, Linux, or Mac. This course focuses on "how to build and understand", not just "how to use".It's not about "remembering facts", it's about "seeing for yourself" via experimentation. Subscribe to AboutUNSW if you are a current or prospective student https://www.youtube.com/user/UNSWCommunity The 2015 Kenneth Finlay Memorial Lecture "Grand Challenges for Engineering in Mining" is presented by Professor Ismet Canbulat. This lecture is also presented as part of the UNSW Vice Chancellor's Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series. Synopsis Mining is an inherently challenging multifaceted industry with complex interactions between different disciplines - from exploration of reserves to processing of ore. At the times of high commodity prices some of those challenges were not recognised or simply ignored. Today, the challenges in mining are greater than ever before with increasing costs and decreasing commodity prices, and those challenges are becoming critical today for the survival of mining companies. There have also been many great engineering achievements in mining that made the necessary step-change in safety, productivity and sustainability. But more engineering innovations are required rapidly. This presentation will highlight those engineering challenges that will need to be solved for sustainable mining in the 21st century. About the Speaker Dr Ismet Canbulat has been Professor and Chair of Kenneth Finlay Chair of Rock Mechanics since December 2014. He has 24 years of research, consultancy, management and on-site experience in Turkey, South Africa and Australia. He has a BSc Mining Engineering, MSc and PhD degrees in Mining/Rock Engineering. Statistics South Africa data shows that 16 000 jobs were lost in the third quarter. Employment decreased from 9 749 000 in June 2018 to 9 733 000 in September 2018. The job losses occurred largely in the productive sectors of the economy - namely - manufacturing, construction, and mining. There were 7 000 job losses in manufacturing, construction, with 5 000 job losses; mining and quarrying, with 1 000 job losses; and community services, with 1 000 job losses. However, compared to a year ago, employment increased by 17,000 or 0.2% year-on-year with an increase of 25,000 in trade, 22,000 in community services and 21,000 in business services.
