A plum-sized #diamond known as the Pink Star has fetched a record-breaking $83m (£51.7m) at #auction. Sotheby's said it was a world record price for a gemstone. The flawless 59.60-#carat pink diamond is the largest in its class ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), with the second biggest less than half its size. Set on a ring, it measures 2.69 by 2.06 centimetres and weighs 11.92 grammes. There was applause as Sotheby's David Bennett brought down the hammer in the heavily-guarded Geneva salesroom. Noting that its pre-sale estimate had been $61m (£38m), he told reporters: "It surpassed our estimate. It's a large amount of money in itself but I don't think this stone has a price." It was bought by a man bidding in the room, who told reporters that he was purchasing it on behalf of an anonymous buyer. The previous record was held by the Graff Pink diamond which sold for $46.2m (£28.9m) three years ago. Half the size of the Pink Star, it came from a private collection and had not been on the market for 60 years. Analysts note that investors have often turned to diamonds and other jewels in uncertain economic times as they are seen primarily as investments. The Pink Star was 132.5 carats in the rough when it was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999, according to Sotheby's. It was then cut and polished over a period of two years by Steinmetz Diamonds, and was first unveiled to the public in 2003 under the title of the Steinmetz Pink. Mr Bennett said: "Frankly when I sold the Graff 3 years ago, I thought it would be a record for a very long time. This price is really quite extraordinary three years later."

A stand-out highlight of our long trip Downunder from Darwin was a conducted tour of the world's newest and largest diamond mine at remote Argyle between Emma Gorge and Hall's Creek in northern Western Australia. Here the company provided an excellent guide to tell us a fascinating story of how the diamonds were discovered and about the unique and hugely valuable "Argyle pink diamonds" now keenly sought throughout the world! A superb tour of the mine and treatment plant followed! A real gem of a video!!! Enjoy!!

Lourdes was only 18 when she says her world came crashing down around her. She had been working as a maid from the age of 14, contributing what little money she earned to her struggling mother and siblings. Then she found out she was pregnant. She was alone, cast aside by her family and the father of her child. When her son, Victor, was born, Lourdes pieced together work, trying to keep their little family of 2 afloat. She decided to start her own business selling empanadas and snacks. That’s when she took out her first business loan of just over $60 U.S. She set strict rules for herself to invest in her business and build savings. She grew the business and continued to take and repay bigger and bigger loans, eventually receiving a $975 loan funded on Kiva by 33 lenders located all over the world, from Norway to Australia. Lourdes used that money to buy more stock and a refrigerator, building the business to the point that she was able to move into a new, bigger shop. This one had a secure gate to prevent robberies and an attached home for her family. Why we do what we do at Kiva: We envision a world where all people - even in the most remote areas of the globe - hold the power to create opportunity for themselves and others. We believe providing safe, affordable access to capital to those in need helps people create better lives for themselves and their families. How we do it: Making a loan on Kiva is so simple that you may not realize how much work goes on behind the scenes. Kiva works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems. One hundred percent of your loan is sent to these microfinance institutions, which we call Field Partners, who administer the loans in the field. Kiva relies on a world wide network of over 450 volunteers who work with our Field Partners, edit and translate borrower stories, and ensure the smooth operation of countless other Kiva programs. 100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes directly towards funding loans; Kiva does not take a cut. Furthermore, Kiva does not charge interest to our Field Partners, who administer the loans. Kiva is primarily funded through the support of lenders making optional donations. We also raise funds through grants, corporate sponsors, and foundations. We are incredibly thankful for the support that has enabled us to do the work that has touched the lives of so many people. http://www.kiva.org/lend https://www.facebook.com/kiva https://twitter.com/kiva https://medium.com/@Kiva/lourdes-dream-to-show-the-world-a-woman-s-worth-978664cb596#.o41q6mh5l Voiceover by Martita: https://www.thevoicecrew.com/mycrewfile.php?id=1012

The question of whether precious metals have a place in one's portfolio is a never-ending debate, but an equally important yet often-overlooked question is "how much"? Ned Naylor-Leyland of Merian Global Investors discusses the role that gold and silver can play, and the important differences between sizing bullion versus sizing mining stocks. He also provides his theory for why central banks continue to accumulate bullion in their own portfolios. Filmed on October 11, 2018, in London. And it comes from a lack of understanding of this problem of costs versus the gold price. So just to go into that a little bit, gold is money, silver is money. And they're pricing of full stature in the bond market. And I'll say, for me, that, that it's not just the work John Williams of Shadowstats. There are other things as well, which indicate that inflation can be around probably average 9% over the last 20 years. I know that sounds completely shocking. But by the way, in truth, , you know, a lot of the most-interesting investors I meet would agree with me. They want to be up 10% net per year. Otherwise, they feel they're down. So that actually confirms that point. But if you accept that, then there's a huge input-cost problem for these companies. And we see it consistently when you model them out proper. You can see it's there. And they're not able to hedge that away or avoid that problem. If costs are rising at 10, and gold is up 1, it's not a management problem. Now, don't get me wrong. There are issues with corporate governance, renumeration. But I don't think there are any bigger than they are elsewhere in other sectors. I think that there's a narrative here which doesn't really bear out when you really dig into it. The issue is with the way inflation is reported, and thereby, the way real-interest rates price gold. And that's where both the problem has come for a very long time, but also, where the enormous- investment opportunity lies because if gold does start to break out in a major way, you're going to see massive margin expansion, operational gearing to the upside for these companies. And people can make fantastic returns on that basis.

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. TSI catches up with SGX and Cargill during iron ore week to catch up on developments in ASEAN steel. Asian steel exports are now almost double that of the annual production of the United States i.e. close to parity with total EU28 output. As Chinese finished steel exports volumes rise, it forces price convergence from exporters from Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan and will likely do the same for increased BOF production in countries such as Vietnam – particularly for any exports going into the Free Trade Agreement area of ASEAN. What strategies can companies employ to mitigate performance and price risk?

This morning, the S&P 500 Index e-mini futures (ES-U3) are trading higher by 8.00 points to 1661.00 per contract. The markets seem to be getting a boost from Asia which was strong last night. The important and highly followed Nikkei 225 Index (Japan) finished higher by 2.48 percent. This tells us that the Japanese ADR's could be strong at the start of the trading day if the U.S. markets are strong. In China, the Shanghai Composite Index surged higher by 3.41 percent. Often, when the Shanghai stock index rallies it will help to boost mining stocks such as Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:RIO), and BHP Billiton Limited (NYSE:BHP).

Ok so before you start hating, read what I have to say. I don't intend for this to be a "hate" video to anyone, I"m just really tired of Jonas fans dissing David Archuleta. The Jonas Brothers aren't totally tone deaf, but there is NO comparison with David Archuleta as I hope you can see with this video. Enjoy and leave your HONEST opinion of who has more talent, but be truthful to talent, not to who's better-looking or more popular or whatever. (sorry if that didn't make sense I'm just trying REALLY hard to not have all these jonas people hating on my video and still express my opinion/reasoning as to why they should keep their mouths shut when they say the jonas brothers are better singers than David) But we'll let you decide! NOTE: any vulgar or immature comments will be removed and I DO NOT "hate" the Jonas Brothers , I just really like David Archuleta a whole lot more ****I don't own ANY of this content, no copyright infringements intended*** NONE OF THESE CLIPS ARE MINE, I GOT THEM ALL OFF OTHER'S ACCOUNTS, SO IF YOU LIKED WHAT YOU SAW (IN THE CLIPS), CHECK OUT THE FULL VIDEOS ON THEIR ACCOUNTS AND FAVORITE THEM AND SUBSCRIBE TO THE OWNERS TOO :) Jonas Brothers singing Happy Birthday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydQWGn7MUBg Jonas Brothers singing The National Anthem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e5Z1GewhdY David Archuleta singing Happy Birthday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIB86AxVpQY David Archuleta singing The National Anthem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZZctQbwXb0 Thanks again for watching this :) UPDATE: ok so here's the votes so far David: 42 Jonas Brothers: 4 David and Nick (or both sides lol ): 8 haha wow

FILM DESCRIPTION: Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts.
