Common Core and Data Mining - The Transformation of American Education

01:33:45
This video contains a thorough breakdown of the Common Core Standards, Assessments, Curricula and data mining. It explains the impact on children and the goals of the CCSS' authors and prime supporters. Most disturbing is the dishonesty with which the authors and copyright holders have shamelessly promoted CCSS as being state led and internationally bench marked when neither is true. You will see one of the highest officials in government tell audiences the government does not have access to student data and see the signed agreements proving this statements is utterly false. You will see how Common Core creates barriers to teacher input to the standards to gain improvements and creates an educational environment that deters parental engagement with teachers and learners. Finally you will see how the CCSS has not been proven to help children become college and career ready, the program's stated objective. Rather, the entire Common Core system migrates the control of all education to the federal government, placing the states under the thumb of the Department of Education. Uniformity and federal control and access are the key accomplishments of Common Core.

Data Mining Students Through Common Core

10:13
http://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/education/item/15213-data-mining-students-through-common-core Awareness is growing rapidly about the recent initiative to bring Common Core Standards to schools across America. Although the standards were supposedly proposed by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) — giving the illusion that the agenda is “state-led,” it was the federal government that endorsed the plan by offering $4 billion in grant money through Obama’s Race to the Top program to cooperating states. Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) recently decided to take action and write a letter to U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan and is currently seeking co-signers from congressional colleagues. Congressman Luetkemeyer addressed several issues of concern with Common Core — and in the last half of his letter he emphasized the crux of the problem: data mining. “We understand that as a condition of applying for [Race to the Top] grant funding, states obligated themselves to implement a State Longitudinal Database System (SLDS) used to track students by obtaining personally identifiable information,” Luetkemeyer said. “We formally request a detailed description of each change to student privacy policy that has been made under your leadership, including the need and intended purpose for such changes.” Parents might reasonably assume that the “personally identifiable information” collected for the database will include students' test scores and perhaps other measures of academic proficiency. But they would be much less likely to imagine that the federal government envisions something far more extensive and invasive than merely tracking academic performance. According to the Department of Education’s February 2013 report Promoting Grit, Tenacity, and Perseverance: Critical Factors for Success in the 21st Century, “Researchers are exploring how to gather complex affective data and generate meaningful and usable information to feed back to learners, teachers, researchers, and the technology itself. Connections to neuroscience are also beginning to emerge.” (Emphasis added.)

#JennyHatchVLOG #StopESEA

02:07
www.JennyHatch.com More HERE: https://whatiscommoncore.wordpress.com/2015/11/24/video-why-the-american-people-must-stopesea/ My name is Christel Swasey, and I am a teacher and a mother living in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Today is November 24, 2015. In less than one week a handful of secretive congressmen are expecting to pass a bill called ESEA, or the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, without our informed consent or the informed consent of our elected representatives. The final bill has not even been released yet but the vote is in a week. It won’t be read by turkey-gobbling Congressmen when it is released in a few days. But they’ll be forced to vote on Tuesday, uninformed or misinformed because all they’ll read is a sheet of talking points put out by the bill’s lobbyists. This will have a disasterous, long term effect on liberty in America. I am asking you to help #STOPESEA by calling Congress at 202-224-3121. Tell Congress to vote NO on ESEA based on what’s slated to be in it, and maybe more importantly, based on the corrupt, un-American process of passing it without giving time to read and debate about it. I’m a big fan of a phrase in the Declaration of Independence: THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED”. The Declaration explains that to secure our God-given rights, we the people instituted government: “to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…” So government has no just powers outside of consent by the governed, and so my life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, and yours, are not secure when government is operating outside the informed consent of the governed. I am telling you that it is happening right now. My own Senator, Mike Lee, has been an inspiration this week as he’s spoken out about this corrupt process and explained how it’s operating. He said that how the conference process is supposed to work is not how is has been conducted. Quote: “from the surface it will still look like the conference process is happening the way it’s supposed to, but beneath the surface, we know that all of this has already been prearranged, precooked, predetermined by a select few members of Congress working behind closed doors, free from scrutiny. And we know that this vote was scheduled on extremely short notice, so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the rest of us to influence the substance of the conference report through motions to instruct.” Senator Lee said, “Because process influences policy… the process expedites the passage of policies that we know don’t work—policies to which the American people are strongly opposed.” Then Senator Lee named a few of those bad policies, such as “the discredited common core approach” and the centrally planned, failed model of federal preschool which the bill will use $250 million to promote. There are many more terrible policies that ESEA will cement. I will list more later on in this video. My own representative, Jason Chaffetz, has also been in the Congressional spotlight this week, shedding light on what the federal government, via the Dept. of Education, is doing to American privacy. I watched him in a video leading a congressional hearing on the improper practices of the Dept of Education in its student data collection and data mining programs. The hearing revealed that the federal Dept of Education has somewhere between one and two hundred ways that it collects data about your child and mine, but the Department only admits to having three because it contracts out the rest of the systems. As if that’s better. The hearing revealed that the Dept of Education received negative scores across every category of data security, and Rep Chaffetz gave the Dept. an “F”—calling it “a monster, an absolute monster”. This is the same federal Dept of Education that is pushing, through the current ESEA bill, additional methods of mining student data. But the things that Sen. Lee and Rep. Chaffetz oppose are not the only things that the ESEA bill will foist on us. I predict that the final version of the ESEA bill will contain many more grants to promote more “voluntary” data mining in addition to the compulsory data collection that’s already taking place; more federal preschools, more psychological profiling of teachers, students and families inside and outside of public schools under the banner of the kindly nanny state’s data-driven decision making, more career tracking, more longitudinal citizen stalking via college student and graduate reporting, more assessments or more deeply embedded forms of stealth assessments, and a subtle undermining of parental authority, teacher creativity and student autonomy from the community-centric, workforce-focused, data-focused initiatives in this bill. (We’ll see this week, won’t we?) I’m asking you to call 202-224-3121 and tell Congress to vote NO on ESEA.

What is INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH? What does INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH mean?

What is INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH? What does INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH mean? INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH meaning - INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH definition - INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Institutional research is a broad category of work done at schools, colleges and universities to inform campus decision-making and planning in areas such as admissions, financial aid, curriculum assessment, enrollment management, staffing, student life, finance, facilities, athletics, and alumni relations. Institutional researchers collect, analyze, report, and warehouse quantitative and qualitative data about their institution's students, faculty, staff, curriculum, course offerings, and learning outcomes. They are involved in collecting and reporting information to government bodies (for example, in the USA, the United States Department of Education's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), to the public (e.g., Common Data Set, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities's University-College Accountability Network), and various college guide publishers (e.g., U.S. News & World Report and College Board). On occasion, institutional researchers share data with one another to compare their own practices and outcomes against those of similar institutions. Institutional research is the source of much of the information provided to regional and national accreditation bodies to document how institutions fulfill the standards for accreditation. In addition to reporting, institutional researchers often engage in data analysis, ranging from simply testing whether differences in reported data are statistically significant to developing and using causal and predictive statistical models. Such models are often used in support of assessment and strategic enrollment management. Due to the need to provide data to the federal government and other entities, nearly every post-secondary institution has offices that fulfill the institutional research function. At some colleges and universities this function is centralized in a single office of institutional research, while at others it is more de-centralized. There is no single academic degree that qualifies one to be an institutional researcher, but suggested strengths include a knowledge of statistics, research methods (e.g., survey research and focus groups), and computer-based reporting tools (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, MicroStrategy, and SQL). Other important assets are strong written and oral communications skills, attention to detail, and knowledge about how institutions of higher education operate. Several American universities offer graduate certificate programs in institutional research, including Ball State University, Florida State University, Humboldt State University, North Dakota State University, Penn State University, Indiana University, University of Missouri, University of Illinois, and the University of Wisconsin - Stout.

Together, these three courses had enrollments of around 350,000 students, making this one of the largest experiments in online education ever performed. Since the beginning of 2012, we have transitioned this effort into a new venture, Coursera, a social entrepreneurship company whose mission is to make high-quality education accessible to everyone by allowing the best universities to offer courses to everyone around the world, for free. Coursera classes provide a real course experience to students, including video content, interactive exercises with meaningful feedback, using both auto-grading and peer-grading, and a rich peer-to-peer interaction around the course materials. Currently, Coursera has 62 university partners, and over 3 million students enrolled in its over 300 courses. These courses span a range of topics including computer science, business, medicine, science, humanities, social sciences, and more. In this talk, I'll report on this far-reaching experiment in education, and why we believe this model can provide both an improved classroom experience for our on-campus students, via a flipped classroom model, as well as a meaningful learning experience for the millions of students around the world who would otherwise never have access to education of this quality.

Jack Buckley, Commissioner for the National Center for Education Statistics at the Department of Education, speaks about the history and goals of the Common Education Data Standards (CEDS). The United States has funded the development of student-level data systems but, because there are no common standards, the systems can't speak to each other horizontally across states or even vertically within states. The goal of CEDS is to create a voluntary common vocabulary of data elements and data models.

1.3.4 Lauren Solberg - Regulating Human Subjects.mov

10:29
This video series is made available from the Northern Kentucky University Law Review Symposium in conjunction with the NKU Chase Law + Informatics Institute. This collection of materials from the March1-2, 2012 provides a permanent collection of the exceptional presentations provided by the participants. This video features Lauren Solberg on the topic of Regulating Human Subjects. From the program abstract: "Regulating Human Subjects Research in the Information Age: Data Mining on Social Networking Sites " Presented by Lauren Solberg In the 1970s, the Department of Health, Education & Welfare promulgated the first regulations governing research with human subjects. Currently, the Department of Health and Human Services regulates both biomedical and behavioral research with human subjects through 45 C.F.R. § 46, but these regulations have not been revised to address the advances in technology that have changed the ways in which human subjects research is conducted in the 21st century. One of these advances includes researchers' use of the Internet for various research purposes, including recruiting subjects for their studies, as well as mining data on social networking sites. The issue of data mining on social networking sites for research purposes is becoming more important as researchers in a number of academic fields are collecting research data in this manner. The question of whether such research involves "human subjects" as the term is defined in 45 C.F.R. § 46 is important because the answer dictates whether or not such research is subject to federal regulation and oversight. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) has previously acknowledged an increased use of the Internet for research purposes, but it has not published any guidance about how the Office understands the issue (nor have any applicable specific regulations been promulgated). Such guidance, and particularly guidance that addresses the use of social networking sites for research purposes, is becoming increasingly more important as researchers are expanding beyond just Facebook and MySpace to recruit research participants and collect data. Furthermore, new social networking sites such as PatientsLikeMe.com are changing the ways in which both behavioral and biomedical researchers recruit and interact with study participants. This presentation identifies three key research activities that any new guidance that the OHRP publishes about Internet research should address: (1) the use of the Internet (including social networking sites) to recruit subjects; (2) the use of the Internet to collect personal information via direct interaction with site users; and (3) the collection of personal information from the Internet for research purposes without direct interaction with the owner of the information, i.e. data mining. It further explores recent case law that says that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy with respect to information posted on social networking sites, and discusses the history of privacy in the federal regulations governing research with human subjects. This Article concludes that in light of the changes in online social networking, as well as the consideration that the Department of Health and Human Services is giving to revising 45 C.F.R. §46, guidance -- or even new regulations -- should be drafted that address these key research activities. It furthermore suggests language that would inform researchers and research institutions whether each of these key research activities are subject to the regulations governing research with human subjects. This video is provided under license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/. About the NKU Chase law + Informatics Institute: The NKU Chase Law + Informatics Institute provides critical interdisciplinary research regarding law, regulation, and industry practice as it is applied across complex information systems, emerging technology, and all areas of law. While not limited to any particular legal field, the Institute emphasizes intellectual property law, privacy, business and securities law, international law, and evidentiary rules because the creation, acquisition, aggregation, security, manipulation, and exploitation of data have extensive legal and societal consequences in these fields.

Scaling and Optimizing Climate and Weather Forecasting Programs on Sunway TaihuLight

41:48
In this video from PASC17 in Lugano, Haohuan Fu from Tsinghua University in China presents: "The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is the world’s first system with a peak performance greater than 100 PFlops and a parallel scale of over 10 million cores. In contrast to other existing heterogeneous supercomputers, which generally include both CPU processors and PCIe-connected many-core accelerators (NVIDIA GPU or Intel MIC), the computing power of TaihuLight is provided by a homegrown many-core SW26010 CPU that includes both the management processing elements (MPEs) and computing processing elements (CPEs) in one chip. This talk reports efforts on refactoring and optimizing the climate and weather forecasting programs – CAM and WRF – on Sunway TaihuLight. To map the large code base to the millions of cores on the Sunway system, OpenACC-based refactoring was taken as the major approach, with source-to-source translator tools applied to exploit the most suitable parallelism for the CPE cluster and to fit the intermediate variable into the limited on-chip fast buffer. For individual kernels, when comparing the original ported version using only MPEs and the refactored version using both the MPE and CPE clusters, we achieve up to 22x speedup for the compute-intensive kernels. For the 25km resolution CAM global model, the code scales to 24,000 MPEs and 1,536,000 CPEs, achieving a simulation performance of 2.81 model years per day. Haohuan Fu is deputy director of the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, and leads the research and development efforts on Sunway TaihuLight, currently the fastest supercomputer in the world. He is also an associate professor in the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Earth System Modeling, and Department of Earth System Science in Tsinghua University, where he leads the research group of High Performance Geo-computing (HPGC). His research interests include design methodologies for highly efficient and highly scalable simulation applications that can take advantage of emerging multi-core, many-core, and reconfigurable architectures, and make full utilization of current Peta-Flops and future ExaFlops supercomputers; and intelligent data management, analysis, and data mining platforms that combine the statistical methods and machine learning technologies. Fu has a PhD in computing from Imperial College London. Since joining Tsinghua in 2011, Dr. Fu has been working towards the goal of providing both the most efficient simulation platforms and the most intelligent data management and analysis platforms for geoscience applications. His research has, for example, led to efficient designs of atmospheric dynamic solvers for the Tianhe-1A, Tianhe-2, and Sunway TaihuLight supercomputers, and reconfigurable computing platforms. Monitoring and managing ICT projects (Report 1: 2018–19)

03:36
The Queensland Government plans to spend $2.6 billion on information and communication technology (ICT) projects over the next four years. Each department is accountable for making investment decisions, and monitoring and delivering on its investments. Departments provide high-level overviews and status updates of major ICT investments through the ICT dashboard. This dashboard is intended to make information easily accessible, visible, and available for the public to use in a timely manner, and make it easier to identify underperforming projects and focus action on the projects that need it most. In this audit, we explored whether monitoring projects at the departmental and whole of government levels have improved successful delivery of ICT programs and projects. We assessed whether: • the ICT dashboard is a reliable source of information and has increased transparency of how departments are running their projects • whole-of-government assurance processes are improving departmental skill levels in monitoring and managing ICT projects • governance processes for one program—Human Resources Information Solutions (HRIS)—and one completed project—My Development Assessment System (MyDAS)—were effective.

Everyone is a Suspected Terrorist

22:24
Worried about PRISM? It's merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the everyday surveillance of US citizens. From the NSA to the DHS, FBI, CIA, etc. Just about every government agency is monitoring US citizens under the guise of fighting "terrorism." 1984 is alive and well. 11 years later, who are fighting against? DHS has bought 1.6 billion hollow points. Citizens can be killed or imprisoned indefinitely with no reasoning given as to why. Everything we do is monitored and tracked without a warrant. Restrictions have been imposed on free speech. Drones are being deployed domestically with plans to have 30,000 of them in the next few years. Local police are being outfitted with military hardware including tanks. DHS has classified an enormous list of mundane activities that imply someone is a suspected terrorist. These range from paying with cash, to taking pictures, to using words on social media like help, watch, virus, wave, police, ice, and many, many more. In addition, DHS is also monitoring for anyone who speaks negatively about the government. They've continued trying to push SOPA like bills to censor the internet and protect corporations from liability for turning over all of your information. The Supreme Court is weighing in on whether silence can be considered evidence of guilt. The CIA director spoke of chips in everyday household appliances. The FBI recently completed a database designed to store everyone's biometric information. The NSA is currently building a similar database to be used to data mine and collect information on citizens. Fusion centers sift through data in a similar fashion and track citizens without warrants. More corporate run prisons are being built who encourage lawmakers to pass more restrictions so they can lock more people up for bigger profits. Federal agencies and police are also looking into Precrime technologies to apprehend people before they might commit a crime. The list goes on and on... With all of this technology, people are presumed guilty until proven innocent. There's is no denying that we are continually heading further and further into a surveillance/police state. It almost sounds like something out of 1984. But it's all very, very real. And none of it will change while the MSM provides little to no coverage of it. The only way it will change is by educating yourself and others and then taking action. United We Stand; Divided We Fall. About the Conference: With the coming of what we’re calling ‘pervasive internet access’ is there evidence that the quality of our life experiences are becoming attenuated and fragmented, undergoing mutations which point to changes in what it means to be human? Does the capture, classification and use by businesses of Big Data yielded by our Internet lives have a legitimate role in adding to consumer convenience and choice; and at what point does this ‘reality mining’ bring unacceptable violations of privacy? Does the combined use of these technologies in the workplace risk overwhelming employees with panoptic regimes of surveillance which may not only be an affront to their human dignity, but also obstacles to human creativity and so, ironically, enemies of the very employee productivity which between them the systems are meant to enhance?
