Ekati Diamond Mine, Canada

05:17
The Ekati Diamond Mine is located about 200 km south of the Arctic circle, near Lac de Gras in Canada's North-West Territories, about 300 km north-east of Yellowknife. Ekati is a native word meaning “fat lake”, and the name attributes to the white veins of quartz rock found throughout the area, which are similar in appearance to reindeer fat. Ekati is Canada's first surface and underground diamond mine. It is a joint venture between BHP Billiton Diamonds (80%) and geologists Charles E Fipke and Dr Stewart E Blusson (10% each), BHP Billiton having bought out Dia Met Minerals' holding in mid-2001. The first kimberlite pipe was found in the Lac de Gras region, in 1985, by Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson who had been prospecting in the region for almost ten years. Kimberlite is a soft igneous rock located in long, vertical volcanic pipes in which diamonds are sometimes found. There are less than 10,000 kimberlite pipes in the world, with very few containing diamonds. Ekati has 156 known kimberlite pipes, at least six of which contain diamonds. The kimberlite pipes in Ekati are 45 to 62 million year old, and most of these lie underneath shallow lakes that formed by melting glacier ice 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. The Point Lake, where the first kimberlite was discovered, was determined to be uneconomic, but its discovery precipitated one of largest staking rushes in mining history, covering most of the area between Yellowknife and the Arctic coast. Ekati officially began operations on October 14, 1998, and was operated by BHP Billiton Canada Inc. The mine is estimated to supply diamonds for the 25 years. Largest known diamond in North America found in Canada

01:27
Largest known diamond in North America found in Canada A 552-carat yellow diamond was recently unearthed in Canada -- the largest ever found in North America. Mining company Dominion Diamond Mines said in a press release on Thursday the diamond was discovered in October at the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada's Northwest Territories. The "astonishing gemstone" measures 33.74 millimeters by 54.56 millimeters, the company said. It was uncovered in the initial screening process at Diavik's recovery plant, the company said. "Abrasion markings on the stone's surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable." Dominion Diamond Mines added the diamond will not be sold in its rough form, and it's too early to determine its value. The company will select a partner to cut and polish the stone. According to the company, this find exceeds a previous record held by the "Diavik Foxfire," a 187.7-carat diamond discovered at the same mine in 2015 by mining company Rio Tinto. Dominion owns 40% of the Diavik Diamond Mine.

11 Most Massive Mines in the World

10:20
From the worlds largest gold mine found on the top of a mountain to the largest diamond mine in the world here are the most massive mines in the world! Subscribe to American EYE! 5.. Asbestos Mine, Canada Also known as the Jeffrey Mine, it’s located in Asbestos, Quebec and it was in operation until 2012. It’s a whopping 2 kilometers wide and 370 meters deep! Check out this thing on google maps and you can tell how completely massive this thing is! It’s the by far the largest asbestos mine in the world. For a long period of time, people would use this mineral to put into their walls and keep their homes from catching on fire! But recently there’s been a link with asbestos and a disease called mesothelioma, which is a lung condition. This is a toxic substance that people should avoid, so obviously this large mine went out of business. The lake at the bottom might look like an inviting blue, but you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s highly toxic! The small town that grew with the thriving asbestos industry feels like they’ve kind of lost their identity once the mine was forced to close, but people do still live there. 4. Mcarthur River Uranium Mine In case you were wondering which mine produces the most uranium in the world, that would be of course the Mcarthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan Canada. This huge deposit was found in 1988 and finally a mining operation took place in 1997, when it began producing what’s known as Yellowcake. It’s not the kind of yellow cake you’d eat with your grandparents. This stuff has a horrific odor and basically what it is, is concentrated uranium powder which can then be used for powering nuclear reactors. We imagine this powdery substance is quite difficult to get ahold of. There aren’t a ton of photos of this place but, it does produce about 13 percent of the global uranium production across the globe. 3. Diavik Diamond Mine In case you thought it was Africa who had all the massive diamond mines, think again! The Diavik Diamond mine, found in the the northwest territories of Canada is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the Northern hemisphere and this place is pretty crazy! They annually produce 7 million carats of diamonds each year and you better believe it’s not easy to get here. The Diavik mine is found north of the arctic circle and it’s definitely cold! This photo here shows the subarctic landscapes that surround the diamond mine. You thought getting to work in the morning was tough for you? Imagine trying to get to work here! Just recently in 2015, this diamond produced what was known as the Diavik Foxfire 187.7 which is one of the largest rough gem quality diamonds ever produced. 2. Siberian Diamond Mine Also known as the Mirny Mine, The USSR began searching for ways to make to make themselves a more economical stable and independent union. In 1955 the Soviets discovered large diamond deposits at this site in the far away lands of Siberia and many people got to work very quickly in order to help bring wealth to the union. After about 20 years of operations, they finally decided that At one point this mine produced 10 million carats of diamonds a year and reaches a max depth of 524 meters or around 1700 feet making it the 2nd largest excavated hole in the world. The mine is so deep, airspace is closed over the hole due to helicopter crashes caused from the downward flow of air. The construction of this in the frigid conditions of Siberia must have been grueling and downright cruel. Sources state that the machinery used at this mine had to be covered at night or it would freeze Are the diamonds worth freezing to death?! It’s unoperational today but Some claim that there’s still a bunch of diamonds in this mine and the whole thing could be worth about 12 Billion dollars. It’s possible that controlling this diamond is mine is crucial to controlling the price of diamonds across the world. Bingham Copper Mine The bingham copper mine located near Salt Lake City Utah is home to the biggest pit in the world and it’s been in operation since 1903. It’s about 2.5 miles wide and if it were a stadium, it would be able to fit an estimated 9.5 million people. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too! Diligent workers can move about 250,000 tons of rock each day and it’s even become a tourist attraction in recent years before a massive landslide took place. Some claim that this was the biggest non volcanic landslide to take place in North American modern history. This photo we see here shows you the aftermath of this massive landslide and Bingham Copper mine and it makes you wonder how safe some of the conditions at these mines truly are. The landslides were so massive, that they actually triggered a few small earthquakes! Experts estimated that 165 tons of earth slide down from the top of the mine all the way to the bottom.

552-carat yellow diamond mined in Canada is largest in North America

02:07
552-carat yellow diamond mined in Canada is largest in North America .The largest diamond ever found in North America has been unearthed - and it's the size of a chicken's egg. The 552-carat yellow gemstone was found at the Diavik Diamond Mine, northeast of Yellowknife in Canada's north west and is worth a fortune. “This incredible discovery showcases what is truly spectacular about Canadamark diamonds,” said Kyle Washington, Chairman of Dominion Diamond Mines. “The colour and texture of the diamond are a unique example of the journey that natural diamonds take from their formation until we unearth them. "Our Diavik Mine has produced some of the most beautiful diamonds in the world, and this one certainly tops the list.” The previous record-holder was also mined at Diavik and was dubbed the 'Diavik Foxfire' when it was found in 2015. Diavik is 60 percent owned by Rio Tinto, a London-based multinational mining firm, along with Dominion Diamond Mines ULC, which owns a 40 percent stake in the property. "A diamond of this size is completely unexpected for this part of the world and marks a true milestone for diamond mining in North America,' the company said in a statement. "Abrasion markings on the stone’s surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable." The exact value of the massive diamond isn't yet known as its still being evaluated by gemstone experts. However, the 'Foxfire' diamond weighed 187.7 carats and was transformed into two finished diamonds. Both of the gemstones were brilliant-cut and pear shaped weighing in at an impressive 37.87 and 36.80 carats. The two stones were auctioned together at Christie's for just over £1m. #552caratdiamond #yellowdiamond #candasdiamond ************** *********Copyright Issues: [email protected] ****** Disclaimer: ========= Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. WORLD'S LARGEST DIAMOND PRODUCERS - CANADA

03:20
Though Canada’s history as a diamond-producing nation is short, it is now the world’s third largest producer by value. In fact, diamond deposits have been found scattered across the country’s vast expanses, and it offers much promise for continued exploration and development. Two large diamond projects are set to go into production as soon as late 2016 and early 2017 – the Renard and Gahcho Que projects. Diamonds were first discovered in Canada in the early 1990s by two geologists who resisted the conventional wisdom that local geology would not support a diamond find. The discovery of the Ekati Diamond Mine triggered one of the most intense prospecting rushes in North American history, bringing teams from all over the world to scour the area. Geologists were literally staking their claims with wooden posts, so much so that local lumber suppliers could not keep up with the demand for wood. It is said that the team of geologists who discovered the Diavik Diamond Mine initially planned to stake out a different location, but had to “settle” for what they were given because the person ahead of them in line at the mineral claims office took the area they were first interested in. Most of Canada’s diamond projects are clustered in the far reaches of the northern Arctic region known locally as the Barren Lands. These barely hospitable tundra experience winter temperatures that average -35 degrees Celsius, often dipping below -50. This makes mining a challenge and the mining camps in these regions function more like enclosed cities, almost entirely sheltered from the harsh weather outside. This region is also known for having been carved from the glacial movements of the last ice age. There are so many lakes in the area, numbering in the tens of thousands, that many remain unnamed to this day. In fact, some of the country’s most prolific diamond deposits have been found located beneath lakes. The Diavik Diamond Mine, located underneath 56 meters of water in Lac De Gras, necessitated the construction of a massive retaining wall and the removal of millions of liters of water to access the high-value kimberlite underneath the lake-bed.
