Bob and Alice will only get you so far. Article at https://coolaj86.com/articles/asymmetric-public--private-key-encryption-in-node-js/ Without getting deep into math, I paint a picture of specifically how RSA encryption works, it's connection with AES, and how HTTPS and GPG use both. I also show examples using the OpenSSL commandline tools and ursa in node.js. It's still pretty high-level, but with sprinkled with some practical details and understanding you may not have had before. Examples with OpenSSL Node.js

Symmetric Key and Public Key Encryption

06:45
Modern day encryption is performed in two different ways. Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. Using the same key or using a pair of keys called the public and private keys. This video looks at how these systems work and how they can be used together to perform encryption. Download the PDF handout http://itfreetraining.com/Handouts/Ce... Encryption Types Encryption is the process of scrambling data so it cannot be read without a decryption key. Encryption prevents data being read by a 3rd party if it is intercepted by a 3rd party. The two encryption methods that are used today are symmetric and public key encryption. Symmetric Key Symmetric key encryption uses the same key to encrypt data as decrypt data. This is generally quite fast when compared with public key encryption. In order to protect the data, the key needs to be secured. If a 3rd party was able to gain access to the key, they could decrypt any data that was encrypt with that data. For this reason, a secure channel is required to transfer the key if you need to transfer data between two points. For example, if you encrypted data on a CD and mail it to another party, the key must also be transferred to the second party so that they can decrypt the data. This is often done using e-mail or the telephone. In a lot of cases, sending the data using one method and the key using another method is enough to protect the data as an attacker would need to get both in order to decrypt the data. Public Key Encryption This method of encryption uses two keys. One key is used to encrypt data and the other key is used to decrypt data. The advantage of this is that the public key can be downloaded by anyone. Anyone with the public key can encrypt data that can only be decrypted using a private key. This means the public key does not need to be secured. The private key does need to be keep in a safe place. The advantage of using such a system is the private key is not required by the other party to perform encryption. Since the private key does not need to be transferred to the second party there is no risk of the private key being intercepted by a 3rd party. Public Key encryption is slower when compared with symmetric key so it is not always suitable for every application. The math used is complex but to put it simply it uses the modulus or remainder operator. For example, if you wanted to solve X mod 5 = 2, the possible solutions would be 2, 7, 12 and so on. The private key provides additional information which allows the problem to be solved easily. The math is more complex and uses much larger numbers than this but basically public and private key encryption rely on the modulus operator to work. Combing The Two There are two reasons you want to combine the two. The first is that often communication will be broken into two steps. Key exchange and data exchange. For key exchange, to protect the key used in data exchange it is often encrypted using public key encryption. Although slower than symmetric key encryption, this method ensures the key cannot accessed by a 3rd party while being transferred. Since the key has been transferred using a secure channel, a symmetric key can be used for data exchange. In some cases, data exchange may be done using public key encryption. If this is the case, often the data exchange will be done using a small key size to reduce the processing time. The second reason that both may be used is when a symmetric key is used and the key needs to be provided to multiple users. For example, if you are using encryption file system (EFS) this allows multiple users to access the same file, which includes recovery users. In order to make this possible, multiple copies of the same key are stored in the file and protected from being read by encrypting it with the public key of each user that requires access. Public Key Encryption (Asymmetric Key Encryption)

05:06
In public key encryption, two different keys are used to encrypt and decrypt data. One is the public key and other is the private key. These two keys are mathematically related. They come as a pairs. The public key encryption is also called asymmetric key encryption because two different keys are used. Public key algorithm is used for different purpose from private key algorithm. It is used for verification and authentication. In this video, I will use an example to demonstrate how to use public key. What is digital signature?

05:03
A digital signature is equivalent to a handwritten signature in paper, and a digital signature serves three basic purposes. Digital signature is commonly used for software distribution, financial transactions and other cases where it is important to detect forgery. Digital signatures are very popular with e-mail users. In this video, I will talk about the digital, uses, and the whole process of creating and sending digitally signed document over the Internet. Keep in mind, digital signature is not about encrypting document, just like paper-based signature. Blockchain/Bitcoin for beginners 3: public/private keys, signatures... and first ever transaction

Detailed overview of public/private key encryption and live demo of exactly how digital signatures work on Mac, combining public and private keys and hash functions. Welcome to episode 3 of my series on Blockchain/Bitcoin. I'm joined once again by my girlfriend Nadisha who is my classroom pupil... I build on the hash function concepts from the previous episode and explain the basic concepts public and private keys and how to use them to create digital signatures - a key part of the bitcoin infrastructure. We demonstrate in a Mac terminal how you can generate your own keys and encrypt and decrypt and sign your own resources - learning by doing always works. We touch on bitcoin addresses, what they represent and how they are created. Finally I go back for a refresh of the bitcoin blockchain browser and look at the first ever bitcoin transaction in the "Genesis Block" to show what a real bitcoin address looks like. Bitcoin Blockchain browser https://blockchain.info Online hash calculator - great way to practice and familiarise with hash functions - one of the most important building blocks of Blockchain/Bitcoin http://www.fileformat.info/tool/hash.htm Course to date (previous videos) 1. Why digital certificate?

07:33
Digital Signature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmA2QWSLSPg&t=2s Digital signature is used for authentication, non-repudiation and data integrity, but there is one weakness of digital signature alone: man-in-the-middle attack. Digital certificates are electronic credentials issued by a trusted third party. A digital certificate not only verifies the identity of the owner, but also verifies that the owner owns the public key. In this video, I will demonstrate why digital signature has weakness and how digital certificate comes in place to make sure digitally signed document must come originally from the claimed sender. RSA Algorithm with Example | Asymmetric Key Cryptography (Public Key Cryptography)

12:58
In this network security video tutorial we will study the working of RSA Algorithm. RSA Algorithm theory - 1. Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Len Adlemen developed the method called as RSA algorithm. 2. Most popular and proven asymmetric key cryptography algorithm 3. Based on the mathematical fact that it is easy to find and multiply large prime numbers together, but it is extremely difficult to factor their product. RSA Algorithm Steps - 1. Choose two large prime numbers P and Q. 2. Calculate N = P * Q 3. Select the public key (i.e. the encryption key) E such that it is not a factor of [(P – 1) * (Q – 1)]. 4. Select the private key (i.e. the decryption key) D such that the following equation is true: (D * E) mod (P – 1) * (Q – 1) = 1 5. For encryption calculate the cipher text CT from the plain text PT as follows: CT= PT^E mod N 6. Send CT as the cipher text to the receiver 7. For decryption calculate the plain text PT from the cipher text CT as follows: PT = CT^D mod N Complete Network Security / Information Security Playlist - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkfggBVUJxY&list=PLIY8eNdw5tW_7-QrsY_n9nC0Xfhs1tLEK Download my FREE Network Security Android App - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intelisenze.networksecuritytutorials Simple Snippets Official Website - http://simplesnippets.tech/ Simple Snippets on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/simplesnippets/ Simple Snippets on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/simplesnippets/ Simple Snippets on Twitter - https://twitter.com/simplesnippet Simple Snippets Google Plus Page - https://plus.google.com/+SimpleSnippets Simple Snippets email ID - [email protected] For More Technology News, Latest Updates and Blog articles visit our Official Website - http://simplesnippets.tech/ #RSA #RSAalgorithm #NetworkSecurity #AsymmetricCryptography

Blockchain tutorial 11: Elliptic Curve key pair generation

18:58
This is part 11 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining how the generate a public private key using Elliptic Curve. In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. NETWORK SECURITY - RSA ALGORITHM

23:04
RSA Algorithm is the example for Public Key Encryption algorithm. Here we are supposed to find two keys 1) Public Key which is used at encryption 2) Private Key which is used at decryption step 1: Select two large Primes P , Q Step 2: Calculate n=P*Q & O(n) = (P-1)*(Q-1) Step 3: Assume e and d (Public and Private Key). Step 4: Encrypt the Plain Text using Public Key e. Step 5: Decrypt the Cipher Text using Private Key d.
