Bitcoin: Your Guide To Understanding Digital Currency [Documentary]

10:55
In 2009, a mysterious computer programmer using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto created a new digital currency called Bitcoin. Five years later, they cryptocurrency has catapulted to the world's main stage. But what's behind Bitcoin's exploding popularity? Does it stand to completely redefine money as we know it, or will it be undone by controversy before it ever has the chance? In 2010, a bitcoin was valued at less than $1. Last December, the price for a single bitcoin soared to more than $1,100. Consequently, Bitcoin has piqued the interest of some of Wall Street's most prominent investors, with venture capitalists pouring more than $98 million into cryptocurrency startup companies to date. But while the Bitcoin market is growing more popular in the mainstream and as more bitcoin business are founded each day, the virtual currency now faces some serious hurdles that could jeopardize its long-term viability. Federal agencies have grown concerned over Bitcoin's role in facilitating illegal purchases through a number of online black market websites, including Silk Road, which was shut down by the FBI last October. Even more disconcerting, a coding error known as a "transaction malleability" has allowed thieves to steal hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of bitcoins in recent months, and because the industry has little oversight or regulation, little can be done to bring the perpetrators to justice. As politicians in Washington and throughout the world consider ways to better regulate the industry, Elite Daily sat down with some of the foremost experts on Bitcoin to discuss the currency's rise to prominence and whether it's a short-term fad or something with the potential to revolutionize the global financial market as we know it. This is their job in a cryptocurrency-network.Since a decentralized network has no authority to delegate this task, a cryptocurrency needs some kind of mechanism to prevent one ruling party from abusing it. So, Satoshi set the rule that the miners need to invest some work of their computers to qualify for this task. After finding a solution, a miner can build a block and add it to the blockchain.Bitcoins can only be created if miners solve a cryptographic puzzle. What is Cryptocurrency. Guide for Beginners A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency designed to work as a medium of exchange. It uses cryptography to secure and verify transactions as well as to control the creation of new units of a particular cryptocurrency. Essentially, cryptocurrencies are limited entries in a database that no one can change unless specific conditions are fulfilled. History There have been many attempts at creating a digital currency during the 90s tech boom, with systems like Flooz, Beenz and DigiCash emerging on the market but inevitably failing. There were many different reasons for their failures, such as fraud, financial problems and even frictions between companies’ employees and their bosses. Notably, all of those systems utilized a Trusted Third Party approach, meaning that the companies behind them verified and facilitated the transactions. Due to the failures of these companies, the creation of a digital cash system was seen as a lost cause for a long while. Then, in early 2009, an anonymous programmer or a group of programmers under an alias Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin. Satoshi described it as a ‘peer-to-peer electronic cash system.’ It is completely decentralized, meaning there are no servers involved and no central controlling authority. The concept closely resembles peer-to-peer networks for file sharing. One of the most important problems that any payment network has to solve is double-spending. It is a fraudulent technique of spending the same amount twice. The traditional solution was a trusted third party - a central server - that kept records of the balances and transactions. However, this method always entailed an authority basically in control of your funds and with all your personal details on hand. In a decentralized network like Bitcoin, every single participant needs to do this job. This is done via the Blockchain - a public ledger of all transaction that ever happened within the network, available to everyone. Therefore, everyone in the network can see every account’s balance. Every transaction is a file that consists of the sender’s and recipient’s public keys (wallet addresses) and the amount of coins transferred. The transaction also needs to be signed off by the sender with their private key. All of this is just basic cryptography. Eventually, the transaction is broadcasted in the network, but it needs to be confirmed first. Within a cryptocurrency network, only miners can confirm transactions by solving a cryptographic puzzle. They take transactions, mark them as legitimate and spread them across the network. Afterwards, every node of the network adds it to its database. Once the transaction is confirmed it becomes unforgeable and irreversible and a miner receives a reward, plus the transaction fees. Essentially, any cryptocurrency network is based on the absolute consensus of all the participants regarding the legitimacy of balances and transactions. If nodes of the network disagree on a single balance, the system would basically break. However, there are a lot of rules pre-built and programmed into the network that prevents this from happening. Cryptocurrencies are so called because the consensus-keeping process is ensured with strong cryptography. This, along with aforementioned factors, makes third parties and blind trust as a concept completely redundant. What can you do with cryptocurrency Buy goods In the past, trying to find a merchant that accepts cryptocurrency was extremely difficult, if not impossible. These days, however, the situation is completely different. There are a lot of merchants - both online and offline - that accept Bitcoin as the form of payment. They range from massive online retailers like Overstock and Newegg to small local shops, bars and restaurants. Bitcoins can be used to pay for hotels, flights, jewelery, apps, computer parts and even a college degree. Other digital currencies like Litecoin, Ripple, Ethereum and so on aren’t accepted as widely just yet. Things are changing for the better though, with Apple having authorized at least 10 different cryptocurrencies as a viable form of payment on App Store. Of course, users of cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin can always exchange their coins for BTCs. Moreover, there are Gift Card selling websites like Gift Off, which accepts around 20 different cryptocurrencies. Through gift cards, you can essentially buy anything with a cryptocurrency. Finally, there are marketplaces like Bitify and OpenBazaar that only accept cryptocurrencies.

RBI cautions regarding risk of Virtual Currencies including Bitcoins | Alert Investors|

Click here to subscribe our channel for latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgnNl9MCMH4WlBZQkOEz9Qg?sub_confirmation=1 The Reserve Bank of India has cautioned the users, holders and traders of Virtual currencies (VCs), including Bitcoins, about the potential financial, operational, legal, customer protection and security related risks that they are exposing themselves to. The Reserve Bank has mentioned that it has been looking at the developments relating to certain electronic records claimed to be “Decentralised Digital Currency” or “Virtual Currency” (VCs), such as, Bitcoins, litecoins, bbqcoins, dogecoins etc., their usage or trading in the country and the various media reports in this regard. The creation, trading or usage of VCs including Bitcoins, as a medium for payment are not authorised by any central bank or monetary authority. No regulatory approvals, registration or authorisation is stated to have been obtained by the entities concerned for carrying on such activities. As such, they may pose several risks to their users, including the following: 1. VCs being in digital form are stored in digital/electronic media that are called electronic wallets. Therefore, they are prone to losses arising out of hacking, loss of password, compromise of access credentials, malware attack etc. Since they are not created by or traded through any authorised central registry or agency, the loss of the e-wallet could result in the permanent loss of the VCs held in them. 2. Payments by VCs, such as Bitcoins, take place on a peer-to-peer basis without an authorised central agency which regulates such payments. As such, there is no established framework for recourse to customer problems / disputes / charge backs etc. 3. There is no underlying or backing of any asset for VCs. As such, their value seems to be a matter of speculation. Huge volatility in the value of VCs has been noticed in the recent past. Thus, the users are exposed to potential losses on account of such volatility in value. 4. It is reported that VCs, such as Bitcoins, are being traded on exchange platforms set up in various jurisdictions whose legal status is also unclear. Hence, the traders of VCs on such platforms are exposed to legal as well as financial risks. 5. There have been several media reports of the usage of VCs, including Bitcoins, for illicit and illegal activities in several jurisdictions. The absence of information of counterparties in such peer-to-peer anonymous/ pseudonymous systems could subject the users to unintentional breaches of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) laws. The Reserve Bank has also stated that it is presently examining the issues associated with the usage, holding and trading of VCs under the extant legal and regulatory framework of the country, including Foreign Exchange and Payment Systems laws and regulations. Virtual Currencies: Gold Rush or Fools' Gold, The Rise of Bitcoin in a Digital Economy

01:22:02
Tuesday, June 18, 2013 Munger Bldg 4, Paul Brest Hall, 555 Salvatierra Walk, Stanford Univ Introduction Susan Athey, Professor of Economics, Stanford Graduate School of Business Moderator Kashmir Hill, Senior Online Editor, Forbes Panelists Fred Ehrsam, Co-founder, Coinbase Chris Larsen, CEO and Co-Founder, OpenCoin, the company developing the Ripple protocol Wendy Cheung, Director of Compliance and BSA Officer, Silicon Valley Bank Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, Principals, Winklevoss Capital Event Description What if currency wasn't something that exchanged hands physically, but moved instantaneously between networks, countries, and continents? What if it wasn't regulated by a government, system of banks, or any entity at all? And, what if it was completely open source? This disruption of what we view as currency isn't just theory, it is already a $1.5 billion dollar movement. Leading the charge is Bitcoin. Launched in 2009, Bitcoin moved to decentralize currency in a big way by leveraging cryptography (instead of government authority) to digitally coin and transfer money. Users can choose to use the currency veiled in anonymity while steadily gaining ground as a valuable, peer-to-peer currency. With over 11M bitcoins in circulation, the virtual currency is gaining significant traction. Thousands of companies and online retailers, and as many as 140 non-profits currently accept payment in bitcoins. The market value of a single bitcoin was as low as pennies at the outset, has risen as high as $266 and now hovers in the $100-120 range. The emergence of an alternative currency has had a domino effect. As more people "mine" (create) new bitcoins, more retailers and organizations scramble to adopt the infrastructure to accept this new form of payment. Non-profits have also been early adopters and virtual currencies have provided new ways to fund and extend their work. The spike in consumer interest has also lead to new currency exchange systems like Mt. Gox---the current most popular online exchange, and Ripple--an emerging platform that calls itself the world's first open transaction network to facilitate exchanges between all kinds of currencies, including Bitcoin. And the rise of Bitcoin has also spurred new similar virtual currencies such as Litecoin. The interest has not gone unnoticed by VC's. Andreessen Horowitz recently completed an angel round for an undisclosed amount to fund OpenCoin, the developer of Ripple. This fascinating area is also fraught with its own concerns. The characteristic potential anonymity of Bitcoin has led to virtually untraceable funding of illicit activities. The government, which has been slow to recognize virtual currencies, is starting to take notice considering the booming growth of this largely untaxed, unregulated currency. Whether you are bitcoiner yourself or are brand new to virtual currencies, join a panel of experts on June 18th 2013, to learn about the past and future potential of virtual currencies.

Top 5 Best Cryptocurrency Wallets

Top 5 Best Cryptocurrency Wallets You'll receive $10 in free bitcoin by signing up with this link http://bit.ly/2oesV41 Bitcoin & Etherum Storage Wallet: http://bit.ly/2o7BmgW Blockchain Training: http://bit.ly/2nGhdn0 What are the different types of Cryptocurrency wallets? There are several types of wallets that provide different ways to store and access your digital currency. Wallets can be broken down into three distinct categories – software, hardware, and paper. Software wallets can be a desktop, mobile or online. Desktop: wallets are downloaded and installed on a PC or laptop. They are only accessible from the single computer in which they are downloaded. Desktop wallets offer one of the highest levels of security however if your computer is hacked or gets a virus there is the possibility that you may lose all your funds. Online: wallets run on the cloud and are accessible from any computing device in any location. While they are more convenient to access, online wallets store your private keys online and are controlled by a third party which makes them more vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft. Mobile: wallets run on an app on your phone and are useful because they can be used anywhere including retail stores. Mobile wallets are usually much smaller and simpler than desktop wallets because of the limited space available on a mobile. Hardware: wallets differ from software wallets in that they store a user’s private keys on a hardware device like a USB. Although hardware wallets make transactions online, they are stored offline which delivers increased security. Hardware wallets can be compatible with several web interfaces and can support different currencies; it just depends on which one you decide to use. What’s more, making a transaction is easy. Users simply plug in their device to any internet enabled computer or device, enter a pin, send currency and confirm. Hardware wallets make it possible to easily transact while also keeping your money offline and away from danger. Paper: wallets are easy to use and provide a very high level of security. While the term paper wallet can simply refer to a physical copy or printout of your public and private keys, it can also refer to a piece of software that is used to securely generate a pair of keys which are then printed. Using a paper wallet is relatively straightforward. Transferring Bitcoin or any other currency to your paper wallet is accomplished by the transfer of funds from your software wallet to the public address shown on your paper wallet. Alternatively, if you want to withdraw or spend currency, all you need to do is transfer funds from your paper wallet to your software wallet. This process, often referred to as ‘sweeping,’ can either be done manually by entering your private keys or by scanning the QR code on the paper wallet. Check Top 100 Richest Bitcoin Address: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@advexon/top-100-richest-bitcoin-address Evolution of f Bitcoin - Full Documentary 2017 [HD] Bitcoin is a form of digital currency, created and held electronically. No one controls it. Bitcoins aren’t printed, like dollars or euros – they’re produced by people, and increasingly businesses, running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems. It’s the first example of a growing category of money known as cryptocurrency. What makes it different from normal currencies? Bitcoin can be used to buy things electronically. In that sense, it’s like conventional dollars, euros, or yen, which are also traded digitally. However, bitcoin’s most important characteristic, and the thing that makes it different to conventional money, is that it is decentralized. No single institution controls the bitcoin network. This puts some people at ease, because it means that a large bank can’t control their money. Who created it? A software developer called Satoshi Nakamoto proposed bitcoin, which was an electronic payment system based on mathematical proof. The idea was to produce a currency independent of any central authority, transferable electronically, more or less instantly, with very low transaction fees. Who prints it? No one. This currency isn’t physically printed in the shadows by a central bank, unaccountable to the population, and making its own rules. Those banks can simply produce more money to cover the national debt, thus devaluing their currency. Instead, bitcoin is created digitally, by a community of people that anyone can join. Bitcoins are ‘mined’, using computing power in a distributed network. This network also processes transactions made with the virtual currency, effectively making bitcoin its own payment network. * Subscribe for more Scientific & Technological Videos * Like & Share * go to our website http://www.advexon.com * Share your ideas and comment

Bitcoin - Paperless Money, Most popular digital currency (CCTV)

"Bitcoin is a payments system and at the same time it is its own currency. A virtual currency not run by government. Not rand, shilling or dollar. It has its own value. The price of it fluctuates daily. It's still early days now. Most people are enthusiasts who use it but a lot of people use it all over the world for various reasons. The most popular use is for speculation. The currency has seen some massive price increases over the last year. But the most important application for it is for remittances, particularly in Africa. Bitcoin is one of the first payment systems that doesn't have anyone to tell you that you can't use it. You can create your own account at home and use it to receive and send money. You don't have to go and apply for an account. No one will tell you where to send or receive money anywhere in the world. Kipochi turns Bitcoin into mobile money. Bitcoin right now is difficult to use for most people, on the mobile it is easier. You just need a mobile phone and SMS."

$60 Million Dollars In Virtual Currency Hacked In Japan

01:47
#UltraHDNews TOKYO: Digital currency worth around 6.7 billion yen ($60 million) has been stolen in Japan following a hacking attack, a virtual exchange operator said on Thursday. Osaka-based Tech Bureau, which operates virtual currency exchange Zaif, said its server had been illegally accessed and money transferred. "We decline to comment on the details of how this illegal access occurred, as it is a crime and we’ve already asked the authorities to investigate," Tech Bureau said in a statement. It added that the virtual currencies stolen were bitcoin, monacoin, and bitcoin cash. "We will prepare measures so that customers’ assets will not be affected" by the hack, it said, adding it would receive financial support from major shareholder Fisco Group. Japan is a major centre for virtual currencies and as many as 50,000 shops in the country are thought to accept bitcoin. Earlier this year, Japan-based exchange Coincheck suspended deposits and withdrawal for virtual currencies after it had been hacked, resulting in a loss worth half a billion US dollars of NEM, the 10th biggest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation. Japanese authorities later ordered two cryptocurrency exchanges to suspend operations as part of a clampdown following the hack.

A brief history of money - From gold to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies

06:28
https://www.udemy.com/blockchain-for-business-the-new-industrial-revolution/?couponCode=YOUTUBE A brief history of money - let's consider the concept of money as an abstraction of value. Money is as old as human civilisation and civilisation itself is reliant on possessing ways in which to exchange, account for, and transfer value. What once started as barter trade (trading goods for goods) was replaced using standardized token money. Gold and silver were the first universally accepted natural choices for money. Actually, they fit the bill so well that they were the primary form of money for centuries across the globe and have been instilled in human culture... I bet when I say "gold" you instinctively think of value or wealth. After this came paper money – a more user-friendly way to carry and move around value compared to precious metals. China was the first to adopt it in the 7th century. The first European banknotes weren't issued until the 17th century. It took people several centuries to accept the new paradigm at the time and shift from gold and silver coins to banknotes backed by these same precious metals as the widely used form of money. This led to the birth of 'the gold standard'. The banknotes themselves didn't hold any intrinsic value like gold and silver coins do. Instead, paper money was backed by precious metals (like gold and silver) stored in a treasury vault somewhere. This was the case until 1944. At the end of World War II, yet another related system was introduced, the "gold exchange standard", under the Bretton Woods agreement. This meant that many countries fixed their national currencies’ exchange rates to the US dollar which was in turn convertible to gold at a fixed rate. Not only that, but this convertibility was no longer available to individuals or companies, only to central banks. However, the Bretton Woods system ended in 1971, when the US dollar convertibility to gold was terminated. So long "the gold standard" and commodity-linked money. Paper money is no longer backed by gold or anything else tangible but just faith! Welcome to the world of fiat currencies! So how does paper hold any value if it's not backed by anything? Well, that's where concepts like legal tender come in. The fiat system, which we still use today, has governments assign value to a currency, declaring it a legal tender. This means a government decides whether a medium of payment will be recognised for financial transactions, trade settlement or commerce in a country or jurisdiction. Throughout all these stages we had an idea of value in our mind but it has evolved hand in hand with our civilisation and technology. From something you can touch and actually use, to something you can touch but cannot use except for trade, to just an abstract idea. Vizionary & Capricoin Explained-digital currency the new Bitcoin

best home base business best home base business join here :http://successwithvizionarycapricoin.plsv.info/ Vizionary & Capricoin Explaned digital currency the new Bitcoin I wanted to make a video giving a different overview of digital currency, Vizionary, Capricoin and how they are all tied together Forms of exchanges have been around as far as history goes. Whether its livestock, rare materials, precious jewels, gold, silver or more familar to us currencies in the form of notes and coin. Sometime materials like silk or certain jewels would not be known as worthy until they received a value because of their uniqueness or rarity for example (keep that in mind because we will come back to this later). The digital era is here, we pay for things with our cards or mobile phone and money is moving around the globe more and faster than ever. Every country has a currency and it has a value. It’s value depends on multiple factors; strength of economy, the amount of people using the currency, the stability and structure of the economy etc. Let's talk hypothetical to put this into context... There is a new country called Capri and they have created their own currency called Capricoin. Just like any other country would create the US dollar or the GBP. However, Capri have created a slightly different type of currency to the norm, this is totally digital, it is done with super computers and complicated algorithms with an in depth knowledge of how to do so. They have a vizion, and have called this movement Vizionary. Capricoin can be moved around the world easier and faster than any other currency out there, with next to no fees which credit cards and bank accounts cant really compete with. There have been others who have made their own digital coin, but not in the fashion that Vizionary can mine the coin, with the internal infrastructure and they are set to capitalize on mega trend to come in the digital era. I hope this helps paints a picture or digital currency, the market place, vizionary and capricoin in a way which ties it all together! Thanks for reading and watching! Virtual Currency Bitcoin Rises in Usage, Value

02:02
June 20 (Bloomberg) -- Virtual currency Bitcoin has risen in usage, notoriety and value in the past few months. A Bitcoin's worth fluctuates with demand, and just like cash, it is free to use and very hard to trace. About $130 million of Bitcoins now exist, and the value has risen more than 6,000 percent this year. Cris Valerio reports on Bloomberg Television's "Bloomberg West." (Source: Bloomberg)

Blockchain's million dollar giveaway to crypto users

04:36
(7 Nov 2018) LEADIN: A crypto company is giving away 125 million US dollars in digital currency, in what's claimed to be the largest ever consumer giveaway of its kind. Ten years since a white paper gave birth to Bitcoin, the future for cryptocurrencies remains anything but clear. STORYLINE: It's a giveaway with a difference. In what's claimed to be the largest consumer so-called "airdrop" of its kind, company Blockchain is giving away 125 million US dollars in cryptocurrency. Users of the company's Blockchain Wallet, who currently number about 30 million, will be able to claim $25 USD worth of Stellar Lumens, a digital currency launched in 2014. Blockchain co-founder and CEO, Peter Smith says it's about encouraging people to get involved with cryptocurrencies. "So, we're really passionate about user-controlled finance, putting people directly in charge of their money, having custody of their own funds. And what we're hoping this does is gives more people the opportunity to do this for a really low cost, low friction method," says Smith. "So, what we're excited about doing and hoping to do is introduce millions of more people to crypto." Smith says the giveaway will be staggered to a smaller amount a day for six months - about two million USD a day - so as not to provoke a drop in value. He says the money was supplied by the Stellar Development Foundation. Stellar Lumen (XLM), that's currently valued at about 25 US cents, gained in value by about 4 percent following Smith's announcement. "I became interested in cryptocurrency as a way to build a new financial system," says Smith. "When you go back through history, you see that every financial system has some healthy manager of greed, some measure of utility, and then some measure of risk management. "In the crypto system, we have utility, we have a lot of greed and speculation, but we don't yet have risk management. "What I mean by that is insurance products, products that pool risk collectively. But it's early days, our modern financial system took 150 years to develop, we're only maybe seven, eight years into the whole crypto currency financial system." Cryptocurrencies are a hot topic at Lisbon's annual Web Summit tech conference, with several associated companies exhibiting, including Luxembourg-based bitcoin exchange, Bitstamp. Virtual currencies, also known as tokens, are electronic alternatives to traditional money. The appeal of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin lies in their use of "blockchain technology" that records all transactions in a digital database while keeping identities private, allowing users to sidestep government or banking system oversight. Speculation has also played a part in their popularity: bitcoin's price skyrocketed late last year to more than $19,000 USD though it has since tumbled and is now trading at around $6,300 USD. Financial regulators worldwide have been scrambling to deal with the rise of cryptocurrencies. Ten years since a white paper gave birth to bitcoin, critics argue cryptocurrencies are far from ready for widespread use, often pointing to the large amount of energy used to "mine" the digital tokens. "The way that people treat it is; 'It's my electricity, I'll spend it on what I want,' that's the current situation," says David Gerard, author of "Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain". "But we're at the stage where bitcoin, just mining bitcoins, uses as much energy as Austria, like a whole country. 6/3/14 - Apple's new stance on Virtual Currency, Bitcoins help Botswana, & the UK aims to Innovate

04:57
http://moneyandtech.com/June-3-news-update/ Following its Worldwide Developer's Conference on Monday, Apple released an update to its App Store Review Guidelines that could bode well for bitcoin and other digital currencies. The update states that quote "Apps may facilitate transmission of approved virtual currencies provided that they do so in compliance with all state and federal laws for the territories in which the app functions." It is still unclear if bitcoin will be one of these "approved" virtual currencies. But if so, this could mean the computing giant will finally allow bitcoin wallet apps like Blockchain and Coinbase, which it had previously pulled from its app store. We spoke with Blockchain's Director of Product Dan Held, who said quote "we are cautiously optimistic. The language used doesn't clearly define what requirements Apple sees as "approved virtual currencies" or what they may stipulate as fully compliant. We are exploring this opportunity thoroughly and we hope that Apple will be lenient in their interpretation." The US Securities and Exchange Commission announced today that it has charged bitcoin entrepreneur and evangelist Erik Voorhees with offering shares to bitcoin-related websites SatoshiDICE and Feed Ze Birds without first registering them, as required by federal securities laws. Voorhees has reportedly agreed to settle charges against him, forfeiting the over $15,000 dollars in profits as well as paying an additional $35,000 dollar penalty. This appears to be the first SEC action taken to address the growing number of bitcoin companies trading publicly without SEC approval. Great American Insurance Group's Fidelity/Crime Division has become the first in the insurance industry to offer commercial coverage for bitcoin, in an effort to meet the evolving needs of its customers. The extended crime policy will include protection for employee dishonesty, money and securities, forgery and computer fraud, and is now available in most states to both commercial and government policy holders who accept bitcoin. The UK's Financial Conduct Authority, which has until now steered clear of digital currencies, has announced a new initiative called Project Innovate that could help boost bitcoin businesses in the UK. FCA Chief Executive Martin Wheatley says their new initiative is designed to promote innovation in the financial sector, creating room for "the brightest and most innovative" companies, and recognizing that virtual currencies, crowd funding, and peer-to-peer are among the industry's most transformative developments. The Dutch central bank has issued a warning on bitcoin to banks and other financial institutions, advising them to be aware of the integrity risks in processing digital currency transactions. However, the warning does not address digital currency's end-users, focusing only on how financial institutions should tread carefully, given the relatively high degree of anonymity and possible indirect effect on their reputation. South Africa-based digital currency exchange iceCUBED has now expanded its full service to Botswana users, thanks to efforts from its new chief evangelist, Alakanani Itireleng, who has become Botswana's key Bitcoin evangelist. As part of her mission, Alakanani has also joined forces with the SOS children's village in Botswana, eager to show how bitcoin can help raise funds without borders and quote "also show that we in the bitcoin community are not greedy or thieves as people tend to think. Let the good outshine the bad and I am trying to do just that." Leading banking and finance executives will gather next week on June 11th and 12th in London to share insights into current trends and emerging innovations in payments systems at this year's PayExpo event. Attendees will be treated to four separate conferences, the Future of Payments Summit, Merchant Payments, Mobile Money Europe and Prepaid 2014 with a packed agenda of workshops and notable exhibits such as financial services tech provider Fiserv and alternative digital currency NXT. The Bitcoin Beginners Fair will take place this evening at 20Mission in San Francisco. Attendees will receive a small amount of bitcoin courtesy of partners Blockchain and GogoCoin, who will be there along with BitPay, Piper Wallet, and the BitGive Foundation to help bitcoin newbies learn about the digital currency and how they can get started using it. For more information and to RSVP, visit BitcoinBeginnersFair.com, and we hope to see you there tonight. http://moneyandtech.com/June-3-news-update/

Digital coins worth 530 million dollar worth stolen from Coincheck

02:54
It's one of the biggest-ever hacking heists of digital money, hackers stole 530 million dollar worth of digital coins from Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck on Friday. The crypto-currency exchange was forced to freeze trading on all currencies except bitcoin. Coincheck promised to repay nearly 90% of what was taken with its own funds. Though the payout will be in yen, not digital coins, to around 2,60,000 affected customers. On Monday, Tokyo regulators warned Coincheck to get its act together and explain what happened by mid-February. The NEM coins were stored in a 'hot wallet' instead of a more secure 'cold' one. The reason of keeping the coins in a ‘hot wallet’ was due to shortages of staff and technical difficulties, cited Coincheck president Koichiro Wada. Crypto currency exchanges in Japan only had to register with the government after April last year. Companies like Coincheck have been allowed to continue business as normal while waiting for approval. NEM coins can actually be traced and the NEM Foundation in Singapore says it has a full account of all of Coincheck's lost coins. However, it also says it has no way to return the stolen funds to their owners and so far the hacker has not moved any of the money to a personal account, or onto another exchange.
