Fracking explained: opportunity or danger

05:04
Fracking explained in five minutes. Fracking is a controversial topic. On the one side the gas drilling companies, on the other citizen opposed to this drilling method. Politicians are also divided on the matter. We try to take a neutral look on fracking. It is relevant for all of us, because of high prices for energy and the danger for our drinking water. This video focuses mostly on the debate currently ongoing in europe. In a lot of european countries there is a public outcry against fracking, espacially in germany. But the facts in this video are relevant to all of us. Short videos, explaining things. For example Evolution, the Universe, Stock Market or controversial topics like Fracking. Because we love science. We would love to interact more with you, our viewers to figure out what topics you want to see. Tar Sands Oil Extraction - The Dirty Truth

11:39
Environmental devastation of the land, water, and air - the largest industrial energy project in the world is extracting crude oil from bitumen found beneath the pristine boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Effecting a land mass equivalent in size to Florida or England, Both industry and government are putting money before the health and security of its people and the environment. Tar sands take 3 barrels of water to process every barrel of oil extracted. Ninety percent of this water becomes so toxic that it must be stored in tailing ponds. Unfortunately these ponds regularly leach pollution into the third largest watershed in the world. Water depletion, exploitation, privatization and contamination has become one of the most important issues facing humanity this century. Check out my other video on water issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMmpg35Bym0 and see my other videos to learn about the dark side of fossil fuels. What is SAND MINING? What does SAND MINING mean? SAND MINING meaning, definition & explanation

02:21
What is SAND MINING? What does SAND MINING mean? SAND MINING meaning - SAND MINING definition - SAND MINING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Sand mining is a practice that is used to extract sand, mainly through an open pit. However, sand is also mined from beaches, inland dunes and dredged from ocean beds and river beds. It is often used in manufacturing as an abrasive, for example, and it is used to make concrete. It is also used in cold regions to put on the roads by municipal plow trucks to help icy and snowy driving conditions, usually mixed with salt or another mixture to lower the freezing temperature of the road surface (have the precipitations freeze at a lower temperature). Sand dredged from the mouths of rivers can also be used to replace eroded coastline. Another reason for sand mining is the extraction of minerals such as rutile, ilmenite and zircon, which contain the industrially useful elements titanium and zirconium. These minerals typically occur combined with ordinary sand, which is dug up, the valuable minerals being separated in water by virtue of their different densities, and the remaining ordinary sand re-deposited. Sand mining is a direct cause of erosion, and also impacts the local wildlife. For example, sea turtles depend on sandy beaches for their nesting, and sand mining has led to the near extinction of gharials (a species of crocodiles) in India. Disturbance of underwater and coastal sand causes turbidity in the water, which is harmful for such organisms as corals that need sunlight. It also destroys fisheries, causing problems for people who rely on fishing for their livelihoods. Removal of physical coastal barriers such as dunes leads to flooding of beachside communities, and the destruction of picturesque beaches causes tourism to dissipate. Sand mining is regulated by law in many places, but is still often done illegally.

Illegal Sand Mining Sabotages Environment

02:11
Illegal sand mining along the Gomti river destroys farmland in Uttarakhand. About the video: Farmers from the Telihat village are losing their fertile fields because of illegal sand mining along the embankments of Gomti river. The large-scale extraction of sand leads to erosion of channel banks and uncontrolled flooding of the fields. Without the embankment, the fields of wheat, pulses and potatoes fall apart. Flood drains the minerals from the soil. As a result, the farmers production deminishes. The Community Correspondent says: Vipin Joshi, India Unheard Community Correspondent from Telihat village says: "Literally most of the embankment has been destroyed already and this leaves our farmland unprotected. Our community as well as the government needs to take action quickly to avoid any more destruction of our most valuable source of water and food." The Issue: Illegal sand mining has far reaching impacts on the sensitive ecological river environment. Apart from land erosion it is a cause of fast depleting groundwater levels. Due to this, the river become increasingly dry. The farmers, who are depending on the river for irrigation will not be able to continue farming activities in the area. The communities along the Gomti river, who use the water for their daily meals, washing and drinking will have to find other sources of water. Accessible and clean water is important for the health and well-being of the community and therefore needs to be guaranteed to everyone. Call to Action: The farmers demand immediate action against illegal sand mining. The government needs to stop the mining activities and work out an adequate plan to avoid any further damage to the river beds and surrouding farmlands. For an effective recovery of the river, fields and its people it is crucial to involve the miners in a participatory way along the project. Their rehabilitation will be the cornerstone to a successful project, creating a healthy and sustainable environment for the future. Let's talk about sand: Denis Delestrac at TEDxBarcelona

15:33
Denis Delestrac made his debut in non-fiction filmmaking in 2001 and signed a number of hits including IMAX blockbuster "Mystery of the Nile" and "Pax Americana and the Weaponization of Space", his first feature documentary. His latest feature documentary, "Sand Wars" is an epic eco-thriller that takes the audience around the globe to unveil a new gold rush and a disturbing fact: we are running out of sand! In his talk he explains us where sand comes from and where it ends up. Our perception is that the ressource sand will always be available for us but thanks to his investigations we realize that this is not true and that sooner or later we will be running out of sand - and consequently won´t have beaches anymore. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

MB GeoTour 35 – Jim’s Seymourville Ordovician Silica Sandbox 2014

09:54
MB GeoTour 35 – Jim’s Seymourville Ordovician Silica Sandbox 2014 An exposure of Ordovician Winnipeg Formation silica sand is located along the access road, a short distance south of the community of Seymourville (16-31-25-9E1, NTS 62P1NW; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 687115E, 6873351N). Summary An exposure of Ordovician Winnipeg Formation silica sand is located along an access road, a short distance south of the community of Seymourville. The exposure was described by Watson (1985, p. 22, 23) as a cap of hard, siliceous material (silcrete) containing specks of black phosphate; underlain by 2-3 m of fine, white loosely cemented sandstone with minor iron staining and kaolin. This video shows Jim quite at home in his adopted Ordovician Winnipeg Formation “sandbox”, located on a slight rise, south of Seymourville. He begins by examining the white loosely cemented sandstone with minor iron staining and kaolin at the base of exposure. And then, he moves upward to the overlying cap of hard, siliceous material, which Jim calls “silcrete” (previously described by Watson, 1985, p. 22, 23, Figure 19). After performing an acid test with 10% HCl (hydrochloric acid), Jim concludes that the silcrete is noncalcareous, as is the 2-3 m thick underlying loosely cemented sandstone. Silica is believed to be the cementing agent for the silcrete; and kaolin for the sandstone. According to Watson (1985, p. 23) a drill hole at the base of the “sandbox” penetrated an additional 10.2 m of sandstone, with approximately 96% silica. The silcrete capping the exposure is thought by Jim to have protected the softer silica sand and sandstone from erosion during the multiple glacial advances during the past million years. Based upon drilling in the area south of Seymourville and an altimeter survey, Watson (1985, p. 23 estimated that 600 million tonnes of silica sand averaging 95% SiO2 is present over an 1800 ha area. Iconic soils of NSW - Podosol

01:55
Podosols are very sandy soils which generally develop on mature sand dunes and sand deposits under high rainfall. In some areas they also develop on windblown material on coastal headlands. They generally span from the central coast and extend northwards to the Queensland border. They are often visually striking, with clear boundaries between soil layers or horizons. The development of Podosols is driven by the movement of water, organic matter, aluminium and iron down the soil profile. These leaching processes culminate in pans and coffee rock in the subsoil. Immediately above the pans, the soil is a clean white quartz sand which is almost pure silica and is a prized resource for glass making and micro electronics. Total soil depth is usually deep, however the north coast is known for its giant forms which can be over 20m deep. The loose, sandy nature of these soils, means that they have high wind erosion risk. Vegetation is important for protection and stabilisation. Podosols are poorly suited for agriculture purposes. They have very low fertility, low water holding capacity and are acid. In low lying areas they can be water logged. Their location on the coastal fringe means they are often under urban development. Other land uses include recreation, conservation and mining.

Science or Soundbite? Shale Gas, Hydraulic Fracturing, and Induced Earthquakes

53:41
http://gallery.usgs.gov/videos/533 Hydraulic fracturing is the process of injecting wells with water, sand, and chemicals at very high pressure. This process creates fractures in deeply buried rocks to allow for the extraction of oil and natural gas as well as geothermal energy. USGS scientists discuss the opportunities and impact associated with hydraulic fracturing. Doug Duncan, associate coordinator for the USGS Energy Resources Program, addresses the increasing role that unconventional oil and gas resources play in the nation's petroleum endowment. USGS hydrologist Dennis Risser discusses some of the major water availability and quality challenges associated with natural gas development, with a focus on the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania. Bill Leith, associate coordinator the USGS Hazards Program, concludes by discussing the potential connection between disposal of waste fluids from hydraulic fracturing and earthquakes.

Fracking Creates Factors Known To Worsen Asthma

01:01
A new study suggest living near fracking sites may make asthma worse. Fracking is a controversial process in which water, sand and chemicals are pumped deep into the ground at high pressure to extract hard-to-reach pockets of natural gas. Dr. Brian Schwartz is a professor of environmental health sciences, epidemiology and medicine at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. Dr. Schwartz told UPI fracking "has numerous environmental impacts that could affect health." He said the list of impacts includes noise, vibration, strong odors, air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, heavy truck traffic, conversion of rural areas to industrial ones and stress. Asthma is known to be worsened by air pollution, odors and stress--all of which increase in areas with fracking. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/07/18/Does-living-near-a-fracking-site-make-asthma-worse/8521468863581/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Organic Super Soil Recipe for Indoors

05:02
*SUBSCRIBE* already you beautiful people. I am truly sorry to those of you who think I talk too fast. However arguably our time here is the most valuable asset we have. *BASE POTTING MIX* 30% Sphagnum Peat Moss 10% Redwood Bark 10% Coco coir 20% Perlite 5% Lava Rock 15% Compost 5% Worm Castings 5% Alaskan Humus Nutrients should be added relative to the amount of base potting mix you have. *BAT GUANO* (e.g. VermiBat by Vermicrop Organics) 4 lb / cubic yard of base potting mix 67 g / cubic foot 2.37 g / liter *SEABIRD GUANO* 4 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 67 g / cubic foot 2.37 g / liter *BONE MEAL* 4 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 67 g / cubic foot 2.37 g / liter *POTASSIUM SULFATE* 2 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 33.5g / cubic foot 1.185g / liter *FINE DOLOMITE LIME* 2 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 33.5g / cubic foot 1.185g / liter *FEATHER MEAL* 1 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 16.25g / cubic foot 0.59 g / liter *AZOMITE®* 1 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 16.25g / cubic foot 0.59 g / liter *DRY POWDERED SEA KELP* (e.g. VermiKelp by Vermicrop Organics) 1 lbs / cubic yard of base potting mix 16.25g / cubic foot 0.59 g / liter *ALFALFA MEAL* 1 lbs / cubic yard of base mix 16.25g / cubic foot 0.59 g / liter *OTHER OPTIONS FOR ADDING ORGANIC NUTRITION* *Blood meal* (e.g. VermiBlood by Vermicrop Organics) — dried blood, not for the squeamish. Same NPK as feather 12-0-0. Very expensive. Contains iron. Very high protein content. Fine, water soluble.  *Calcium Phosphate* — not my favorite. Cheap – gives you phosphorus and calcium. Popular with organic growers. Issues with contaminants. (Uranium, Plutonium, cadmium, arsenic) Not recommended for growing medicinal plants. *Crustacean Meal* – combination bi-product - ground up lobster, crab, shrimp shells. High N content along with potassium and calcium. Chitin in the crustacean meal provides a defensive response in plants against insect predation, so it can act as a beneficial pest preventative. *Fishbone Meal*— store in dry conditions. Mold susceptible. High N. Very high phosphorus.   *Glacial Rock Dust* — trace elements—soft rock phosphate. High Phosphorus mined rock. 0-3-0 ultra slow release. Not recommended for short cycle plants. *Green Sand* — Sand or sandstone with a green color. High silica levels. Another mined product. Similar to glacial rock dust. *Insect Frass* (e.g. Charge by Ecothrive in Europe or "Insect Frass" in North America) broad spectrum fertility and a hit of beneficials. Also contains chitin.   *Mycorrhizae* (e.g. Subculture M by General Hydroponics) – More economical to use in transplant (direct contact with roots) rather than blending with potting mix. Relationships tend to be long term so there's an argument that this is better suited for cultivating larger, older plants. Don't forget—if you follow this recipe make sure you wet your mix with some water and give it some time to compost and pH stabilize over a month or so.

Kozhikode: The rivers and dams in Kerala are being overrun by the sand mining lobby. When the state government is getting ready to come up with a new act to prevent water pollution and protection of water bodies, it has to be seen how effective the new act will be. Though there is no permission for sand mining within the 500 metre radius of the dam, in Kakkayam and Peruvannamuzhi dams, sand mining goes on unhindered. In our Backyards: Fracking in the Suburbs

01:22:24
Northern Colorado’s front range is home to extensive oil and gas extraction, which often takes place in strikingly close proximity to human communities. We will use artist David Brooks’ exhibition Case Study: Weld County, CO and commentary on hydraulic fracturing and urban development as a starting point for a science-based conversation about fracking. Issues to be addressed include the effects of development on people’s sense of attachment to their communities, ways of thinking about risks and benefits, and impacts on air, soil, and water quality. CSU experts will describe relevant research results, offer their own perspectives on key issues, and address questions posed by the audience as they discuss the myriad scientific perspectives related to communities housed in fracking operations. Panelists: Stephanie Malin, Department of Sociology Thomas Borch, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences Jennifer E. Cross, Department of Sociology and Institute for the Built Environment
