She is the founder of the NGO Awaaz Foundation and the Convener of the Movement against Intimidation, Threat and Revenge against Activists (MITRA). She is from a family of environmentalists, and is pioneer to many movements against noise pollution and illegal sand mining in India. What is SAND MINING? What does SAND MINING mean? SAND MINING meaning - SAND MINING definition - SAND MINING explanation. However, sand is also mined from beaches, inland dunes and dredged from ocean beds and river beds. It is often used in manufacturing as an abrasive, for example, and it is used to make concrete. It is also used in cold regions to put on the roads by municipal plow trucks to help icy and snowy driving conditions, usually mixed with salt or another mixture to lower the freezing temperature of the road surface (have the precipitations freeze at a lower temperature). Sand dredged from the mouths of rivers can also be used to replace eroded coastline. Another reason for sand mining is the extraction of minerals such as rutile, ilmenite and zircon, which contain the industrially useful elements titanium and zirconium. These minerals typically occur combined with ordinary sand, which is dug up, the valuable minerals being separated in water by virtue of their different densities, and the remaining ordinary sand re-deposited. Sand mining is a direct cause of erosion, and also impacts the local wildlife. For example, sea turtles depend on sandy beaches for their nesting, and sand mining has led to the near extinction of gharials (a species of crocodiles) in India. Disturbance of underwater and coastal sand causes turbidity in the water, which is harmful for such organisms as corals that need sunlight. It also destroys fisheries, causing problems for people who rely on fishing for their livelihoods. Removal of physical coastal barriers such as dunes leads to flooding of beachside communities, and the destruction of picturesque beaches causes tourism to dissipate. Sand mining is regulated by law in many places, but is still often done illegally.

Illegal sand mining along the Gomti river destroys farmland in Uttarakhand. About the video: Farmers from the Telihat village are losing their fertile fields because of illegal sand mining along the embankments of Gomti river. The large-scale extraction of sand leads to erosion of channel banks and uncontrolled flooding of the fields. Without the embankment, the fields of wheat, pulses and potatoes fall apart. Flood drains the minerals from the soil. As a result, the farmers production deminishes. The Community Correspondent says: Vipin Joshi, India Unheard Community Correspondent from Telihat village says: "Literally most of the embankment has been destroyed already and this leaves our farmland unprotected. Our community as well as the government needs to take action quickly to avoid any more destruction of our most valuable source of water and food." The Issue: Illegal sand mining has far reaching impacts on the sensitive ecological river environment. Apart from land erosion it is a cause of fast depleting groundwater levels. Due to this, the river become increasingly dry. The farmers, who are depending on the river for irrigation will not be able to continue farming activities in the area. The communities along the Gomti river, who use the water for their daily meals, washing and drinking will have to find other sources of water. Accessible and clean water is important for the health and well-being of the community and therefore needs to be guaranteed to everyone. Call to Action: The farmers demand immediate action against illegal sand mining. The government needs to stop the mining activities and work out an adequate plan to avoid any further damage to the river beds and surrouding farmlands. For an effective recovery of the river, fields and its people it is crucial to involve the miners in a participatory way along the project. Their rehabilitation will be the cornerstone to a successful project, creating a healthy and sustainable environment for the future. MB GeoTour 35 – Jim’s Seymourville Ordovician Silica Sandbox 2014 An exposure of Ordovician Winnipeg Formation silica sand is located along the access road, a short distance south of the community of Seymourville (16-31-25-9E1, NTS 62P1NW; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 687115E, 6873351N). Summary An exposure of Ordovician Winnipeg Formation silica sand is located along an access road, a short distance south of the community of Seymourville. The exposure was described by Watson (1985, p. 22, 23) as a cap of hard, siliceous material (silcrete) containing specks of black phosphate; underlain by 2-3 m of fine, white loosely cemented sandstone with minor iron staining and kaolin. This video shows Jim quite at home in his adopted Ordovician Winnipeg Formation “sandbox”, located on a slight rise, south of Seymourville. He begins by examining the white loosely cemented sandstone with minor iron staining and kaolin at the base of exposure. And then, he moves upward to the overlying cap of hard, siliceous material, which Jim calls “silcrete” (previously described by Watson, 1985, p. 22, 23, Figure 19). After performing an acid test with 10% HCl (hydrochloric acid), Jim concludes that the silcrete is noncalcareous, as is the 2-3 m thick underlying loosely cemented sandstone. Silica is believed to be the cementing agent for the silcrete; and kaolin for the sandstone. According to Watson (1985, p. 23) a drill hole at the base of the “sandbox” penetrated an additional 10.2 m of sandstone, with approximately 96% silica. The silcrete capping the exposure is thought by Jim to have protected the softer silica sand and sandstone from erosion during the multiple glacial advances during the past million years. Based upon drilling in the area south of Seymourville and an altimeter survey, Watson (1985, p. 23 estimated that 600 million tonnes of silica sand averaging 95% SiO2 is present over an 1800 ha area. Podosols are very sandy soils which generally develop on mature sand dunes and sand deposits under high rainfall. In some areas they also develop on windblown material on coastal headlands. They generally span from the central coast and extend northwards to the Queensland border. They are often visually striking, with clear boundaries between soil layers or horizons. The development of Podosols is driven by the movement of water, organic matter, aluminium and iron down the soil profile. These leaching processes culminate in pans and coffee rock in the subsoil. Immediately above the pans, the soil is a clean white quartz sand which is almost pure silica and is a prized resource for glass making and micro electronics. Total soil depth is usually deep, however the north coast is known for its giant forms which can be over 20m deep. The loose, sandy nature of these soils, means that they have high wind erosion risk. Vegetation is important for protection and stabilisation. Podosols are poorly suited for agriculture purposes. They have very low fertility, low water holding capacity and are acid. In low lying areas they can be water logged. Their location on the coastal fringe means they are often under urban development. Other land uses include recreation, conservation and mining.

A new study suggest living near fracking sites may make asthma worse. Fracking is a controversial process in which water, sand and chemicals are pumped deep into the ground at high pressure to extract hard-to-reach pockets of natural gas. Dr. Brian Schwartz is a professor of environmental health sciences, epidemiology and medicine at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. Dr. Schwartz told UPI fracking "has numerous environmental impacts that could affect health." He said the list of impacts includes noise, vibration, strong odors, air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, heavy truck traffic, conversion of rural areas to industrial ones and stress.
