So, you want to know how to find a specific abandoned mine or abandoned mines in general? We will dive into answering that question in this video by taking you along on our search for an abandoned mine that took us two years to locate! Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to observe the tools and techniques we use to find the historic mines that appear in our videos and you will, hopefully, be able to incorporate some of what we have learned over the years (and are now sharing with you) into your own search for mines and mine sites. I will cover how we find out about mines in the first place, the research that we do, the online resources we utilize, the technology we take out in the field with us and more. Whether you are a historian or a gold miner looking for promising sites to file claims on or a mine explorer interested in documenting our industrial heritage or are just curious what is around the area where you live, this video will, hopefully, have something useful for you. Some of you will obviously already know many, if not all, of these search techniques. However, this video is intended to have something for everyone – from the novice to the experienced mine hunter. Many people have no interest at all in finding lost mines, but enjoying seeing them and the efforts of others to find them, and so I have included the footage of the mine when we finally found it for that demographic as well. Fortunately, we don’t normally have to work this hard to find an abandoned mine, but if our search for this mine, although quite unpleasant and frustrating at times, was useful to someone else out there, then it was worth it. Happy hunting! Here are the links for the websites mentioned in this video: https://thediggings.com/ caltopo.com http://www.mylandmatters.org/ http://www.westernmininghistory.com/ https://www.google.com/earth/ https://goldrushexpeditions.com/ ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

Credit for this discovery belongs to Mr. Chuck McBride who spotted the tailings pile at this mine on Google Earth. I believe it is part of the Rose Quartz group of mines along the South Fork of Poorman Creek. This mine is not listed on the USGS topographic maps. The main Rose Quartz Mine is presently being worked and it is not possible to visit.

Thurmond West Virginia Once a thriving center of Coal mining in West Virginia, Thurmond was a prosperous place of commerce and businesses along the Ohio Railway. It popped up in the 1880’s in the center of the state and consisted of popular hotels, casinos, banks, schools. It was a fairly well organized city with strict laws on drinking. In 1888 a rail station was built which allowed for tourism in the area and also to carry the coal out of the hills. The population reached a peak of 462 people 1930 but steady downfall would occur not too long after. A popular hotel was burnt to the ground which which had startled much of the population and would finally reach 0 in the year 2000. You can see the contrast between the cities built out in the west and out in the east during this time. There was much more technological advancements and the addition of coal to a city at this period of time would allow them to heat their homes. Surprisingly the city hasn’t received too many vandals and much of it’s past is preserved. 4. Salton Sea Gallons of water were sent gushing into a dry lake bed after a storm caused an irrigation canal to flood and break in the Colorado River. So the Salton Sea is basically lucky to exist in that sense. A resort town was built near this body of water, which became a popular location for boating. Many people once flocked here to soak up the sun, go jet skiing and drive fancy yachts in the booming 50’s and 60’s. Stars like the Beach Boys and Bono would encore this lake, right in the heart of California’s desert. It’s probably now the last place you’d want to go on vacation unless you enjoy putrid odors and some of those boats are left abandoned on this decaying lake.. Not all good things last forever and this place quickly turned into an ecological nightmare due to pesticides and fertilizers from nearby farms and the irrigation system. It’s seen as one of California’s biggest environmental blunders of all time It became much too polluted to sustain life even for fish. The inhabitants quickly fled once the smell of the water became unbearable. To this day, dead fish litter the once popular beaches, leaving a rotten egg like smell that would be enough to scare off any urban explorer and it’s certainly not good for tourism. The size of the lake continues to shrink even in 2017 and the smell of rotting fish will continue to get worse. 3. St Elmo Colorado Don’t forget the rockie mountains also have their fair share of gold as well. And where there was once gold, there are abandoned towns. This places is located in the Sawatch Mountains and features well-preserved wooden buildings from the 1880’s after the gold and silver mines sprung up. The town had a general store, a town hall, 5 hotels, dancing halls and saloons during it’s peak around the 1890’s the resources were mined and not much else was left, the railroad was closed so no one kept on coming here. Some residents seemed to stay until 1952 when the postal service was cut off. If you don’t mind high elevation at 9,961 feet, this might be an enjoyable place to visit and it’s our ghost town with the highest elevation on this list.. It’s also one of Colorado’s maintained ghost towns. 2. Virginia City, Nevada Virginia city grew quickly in the 1850’s and 60’s after the huge discovery of the comstock lode which was a major silver deposit in the sierra nevada mountains,. But once the silver was gone, everyone fled the city. You can actually explore one of our most mysterious ghost towns in the US on google maps. Check out the entire well preserved ghost town of Virginia City, which is also rumored to be one of the most haunted places in the US. Besides some of the modern day vehicles, this place is exactly the way it was over 100 years ago and it’s the most haunted place in Nevada. Some ghost towns are quite as accessible on google maps, and this is one of the more detailed ones we were able to find. Ignore the motorcycles and get a good feel for how historic site would have looked, when miners were sifting the the hills in search of gold. Drop into the Silver Terrace cemetery for a creepy flash from the past!

Nestled deep within the eastern Ozarks in an areaknown as the Old Lead Belt; is a major part of the great Southeast Missouri lead district, the premier lead mining district of the world. The mining industry in this area played an important role in Missouri's economic and social fabric for more than 280 years. Pierre Charles Leseurled the first European mineralogical expedition in the Mississippi Valley in early 1700. Two decades later, word came of a "shiny gray mineral, that was everywhere, often laying on the surface of the ground." These early explorers discovered that blanketlike lodes of galena, many feet thick, lay just below the surface. This plentiful mineral is the primary lead ore still mined today in Missouri. The ore deposits have made Missouri the nations major source of lead for more than 90 years. In 1964, St Joseph Lead Co. purchased nearly 950 acres at Bonne Terre, Missouri. The company soon rose to dominance over its competitors because of its innovations in ore-smelting,underground engineering technology and the development and use of mechanical equipment. In 1923 the company purchased the Federal Mill No. 3 lead-concentrating complex and improved the mill to become the largest lead mill in the world. It remained in operation until 1972. In 1975, the company donated the Federal mine-mill complex, along with adjoining lands. to Missouri for use as a State Park.
