Gold Miners in Guyana Are Destroying the Amazon (2008)

After more than a decade of illegal mining, the country is facing an environmental disaster. "First the miners burn down the rainforest. Then they dig a giant crater, hosing away the muddy earth and polluting rivers and forests." There are over a thousand illegal mines like this in French Guyana. They’'re steadily destroying the rainforest’'s ecosystem. "“They will never be able to stop it because the jungle is so big and we are so tenacious”," states one miner. Most of this illegal gold is mixed together with gold from other sources and ends up abroad. "“There needs to be much greater political impetus behind regulating this very destructive trade”," states MEP Caroline Lucas. Global 3000 | Mining Gold in Guyana
In antiquity mercury was considered a medicine. Today we know how toxic it really is. Only this year did environmental ministers at a UN summit agree to ban its use. But penniless gold miners often either don't know the risks involved or have no other choice but to use the toxic metal. One case is Guyana,in South America. But there the government has passed a law that miners must wear protective clothing while in contact with mercury.

Smuggling threatens Guyana's gold rush
The South American nation of Guyana is losing tens of millions of dollars each year because of widespread gold smuggling, despite the fact that the precious metal now ranks second after agriculture in the revenue it generates for the country. Gold is worth almost $400 million dollars a year to Guyana; stores are full of merchandise made with locally produced gold. The surge in the price of the metal has also led to billions of dollars in investment in the mining sector. Yet the country loses up to a third of its gold revenue as a result of smuggling. A World Wildlife Fund study estimates that tonnes of the country's gold is being moved illegally across the border into Suriname. Al Jazeera's Anand Naidoo reports from Georgetown, Guyana.

Searching for El Dorado - Get a Taste of Gold Mining in Guyana!
Perhaps the only book that takes you deep into the Rainforests of Guyana and Venezuela on the hunt for gold! Marc Herman wrote a great one with Searching for El Dorado. You learn about small-scale artisanal mining ('mom-and-pop mining') and large-scale, open-pit mining. This is a fun read, and you meet lots of interesting people on the way. Guyana sounds like a fascinating place. Importantly, it's probably not as scary as it sounds in the book, since the experiences date from the 1990s and early 2000s. It's a great example of how a little book can give you ideas for speculating on mining stocks! Find a cheap used copy here! Mining the Golden Mountains of Suriname With An Ex-Rebel Leader
Gold is everywhere in Suriname, from political power to what the locals wear on their fingers, the effects of gold mining seep into all aspects of society. The industry is a necessary source of income for many Surinamese, but it's also destroying the environment, bad for public health, and rife with corruption. VICE Netherlands went to Suriname to see how gold is intertwined with everyday life in the country. They ride along with 'Jungle' Ronnie Brunswick - an ex-rebel leader who waged a violent civil war but is now a successful businessman, owning thousands of hectares of gold mining land. VICE Netherlands also witnessed the dangers of mercury, which is used widely in the recovery of gold, and visited Benz Village, where everything in life is paid for with gold. Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/south-america/gold-guns-and-garimpeiros Gold is always a good business. It never goes bankrupt or needs a bail-out. Gold is the go-to investment when financial markets suffer. For the last few years, as "Western" Markets have sank, gold prices, predictably, have soared, reaching record high values. Consequently, gold mining increases. In France, Brazilians make their way illegally into French Guiana, crossing rivers nightly into Europe's Amazon, to mine for gold. French Gendarme battle illegal Brazilian miners (garimpeiros) daily. Patrolling rivers, aerial surveillance and foot patrols through the dense Amazon forest, the Gendarme try to mitigate the environmental damage done to Europe's only rainforest. Meanwhile, Brazilian garimpeiros, an estimated 30,000, live clandestinely throughout the jungle in an archipelago of mining camps and mines, both large and small. Miners bring materials, petrol, chicken, engine parts, 4-wheeler ATVs, even earth-moving tractors and trucks, up rivers and small creeks in wooden canoes. Everything in the jungle is paid with gold, a plate of rice and beans, a cold beer, a prostitute. This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Gold, Guns and Garimpeiros" (http://bit.ly/z3xh3b).

Poison in the Lifeline - Part 2.mov
Poison in the Lifeline (27min) 1995 Omai Gold Mine Disaster. POISON IN THE LIFELINE highlights the events and consequences of the Omai Mine disaster in Guyana (1995 ), tracing the history of the disaster and examining the situation of extractive industries in relation to the 40,000 Amerindian people who live permanently in the interior. The current thrust towards large scale extractive industries carries very serious and demonstrated perils. The Canadian owned Omai Gold mine in Guyana with an annual production which exceeds a quarter of a million troy ounces of gold yearly, is one of South America's largest mines. In August 1995 the dam for the reservoir containing waste material broke sending millions of liters of sludge laced with cyanide (used for gold extraction) into Guyana's largest river. It was declared the worse mine disaster for the environment in history. The coordinators of the Guiana Shield Media Project were on the scene and able to document the consequences. The film also features a discussion about other extractive industries in both Guyana and Suriname.Extractive expansionism lies at the very heart of present day conflicts in the region.Extractive industries such as mining and logging, combined with increasing encroachments of market economies, are at the heart of social and cultural change. The human and natural environments of the region are being forced into a position of accommodation. The people of the Guiana Shield confront serious ongoing challenges to their life ways and cultures. The challenges faced by the people living on the front lines of extractive expansionism are by far the most severe and acute. Extractivism is by no means a new phenomenon in the Guiana Shield region. Indeed, the area has been prospected for precious minerals since the sixteenth century. The colonial history of the region is, in reality, a history of extractive expansionism. However, extractive industries have undergone a significant amplification in the past decade. Societies throughout the region are confronting the reality and consequences of these activities on a larger scale than ever before. Timber concession grants, many as large as the Netherlands or New Jersey overlap or directly affect Amerindian and tribal lands. Compensation is minimal and the people from the area where concessions are located often form the labour force for the industries- consequently disturbing and altering the social and economic fabric of the communities. https://www.facebook.com/GuianaShieldMediaProject
