Gerard van Belle | The Pluto Vote: One Astronomer’s Personal Story | NEAF Talks

58:00
Filmed April 2016 The 2006 vote on the planetary status of Pluto has had a long-lasting reverberation throughout astronomy. With an outcome that remains controversial both in the public eye and within the professional community, the debate on what to call this world remains a lively one. His own accidental involvement in this question has its own tall tale, which he will recount along the way to re-examining a question: What is a planet, and why do we care? Who is Gerard van Belle? DR. GERARD VAN BELLE was with the European Southern Observatory in Germany and Chile from 2007 until July 2011, working as the Instrument Scientist for the PRIMA and MATISSE instruments for the VLTI interferometer. In August of 2011, he moved back to the United States as an Astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ, where he is working on the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. Gerard began working on arrays of optical telescopes (“interferometers”) with graduate work at U. Wyoming in the mid 1990’s, working with Mel Dyck on the IOTA interferometer on Mt. Hopkins, AZ, collaborating with colleagues from lesser-known institutions such as Harvard and U. Massachusetts. Upon completion of his Ph.D. at U. of Wyoming in 1996, he joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as an instrument architect for the Keck Interferometer, expanding his portfolio to include work with the largest telescopes in the world. David Cassel directs "Berlin Berlin" for FEDEC Conference | Scene 01 Music and Rhythm

03:08
David Cassel directs show for FEDEC conference stage, 2012. In 2012 I was asked by Die Etage, Schule für Darstellenden Künst in Berlin, Germany, to create and direct a show for the students of the graduating year of the circus program. This clip, from the opening scene of the show “Berlin Berlin”, represents the results of the ensemble work created during my classes which spanned a period of 6 months. I worked with the group for approximately 72 hours on all aspects of the show. The final production was presented at The F.E.D.E.C. (European Federation of Professional Circus Schools) conference on April 27 as part of an evening of 2 shows. The second show in the program was presented by Staatliche Artistenschule Berlin (the State Circus School). The evening took place at the Academy of Arts, Hanseatenweg 10, on April 27, 2012, at 20:30 clock and was promoted as: “The profiles of two different trainings flow together in a varied program, a journey across the world of artistry.” The original press release follows: “THE ETAGE - School for the Performing Arts and the State Artistic School Berlin organize a joint show at the Academy of Arts. In recent years, circus and variety have gained more and more recognition and the artistry is increasingly understood and recognized as a separate art form. For the annual general meeting of the FEDEC (European Association of Professional Circus Schools), in which the representatives of all renowned and professional training centers for acrobatics and artistry come together, the two Berlin artist schools present a joint show. The different profiles of two trainings flow together in a varied program, a journey across the world of artistry.

The Brooks Family Lecture: "Bringing America Together"

01:27:39
Arthur Brooks addresses the divisions that plague America & finds a set of strategies to help us disagree better, forge a new model of aspirational leadership, & unite the country. Tuesday, January 29, 2019 5:00pm – 6:30pm Filene Auditorium, Moore Building Sponsored by: Rockefeller Center No matter what our political views, few people believe our country is as united as it should be. Whether in the media, politics, or even in our personal relationships, we all recognize that the country is increasingly defined by a culture of contempt – in which people treat others with whom they disagree as defective, or worthless. Within this distressing reality, however, there lies an opportunity for our nation. Drawing on history, social psychology, behavioral economics, and the counsel of ancient wisdom, Arthur Brooks addresses the divisions that plague America, and finds a set of strategies to help us disagree better, forge a new model of aspirational leadership, and unite the country. Arthur C. Brooks is president of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a nonpartisan public policy think tank in Washington, DC, where he is also the Beth and Ravenel Curry Scholar in Free Enterprise. Additionally, Dr. Brooks is a columnist for the Washington Post and host of the podcast “The Arthur Brooks Show.” At 19, Dr. Brooks left college to work professionally as a classical musician (a period his parents described as his “gap decade”). During this time, he toured the United States with the Annapolis Brass Quintet, recorded albums with jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and others, and spent several seasons as associate principal French horn with the City Orchestra of Barcelona. In his late twenties, Dr. Brooks returned to college by correspondence and studied economics, mathematics, and modern languages, eventually earning his B.A. while still working as a musician. He went on to pursue an M.A. in economics at Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in public policy at the RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, California. His doctoral work focused on applied microeconomics and mathematical modeling. While earning his Ph.D., Dr. Brooks also conducted research for the RAND Corporation on theater-level combat models for the US Air Force. Upon completion of his doctorate, Dr. Brooks joined the faculty of Syracuse University as a professor of public administration. For ten years, he taught courses in economics and social entrepreneurship and conducted research on happiness and the economics of philanthropy. He was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government at Syracuse until assuming the presidency of AEI on January 1, 2009. Dr. Brooks has published dozens of scholarly articles and 11 books on topics including philanthropy, military operations research, the future of conservatism, and human happiness. His next book, “Love Your Enemies,” will be released in March 2019 (Broadside Books, 2019). Previous books include New York Times bestsellers “The Conservative Heart: How to Build a Fairer, Happier, and More Prosperous America” (Broadside Books, 2015) and “The Road to Freedom: How to Win the Fight for Free Enterprise” (Basic Books, 2012) as well as the textbook “Social Entrepreneurship” (Prentice Hall, 2008). Dr. Brooks delivers more than 100 speeches annually around the US, Europe, and Asia. He appears regularly on radio and television and is a frequent guest host for programs such as CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” He writes frequently for the Washington Post and publishes featured pieces in outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Commentary Magazine, and Foreign Affairs. In the spring of 2019, he is releasing “The Pursuit,” a feature-length documentary film that explores the themes of poverty alleviation and human happiness both at home and abroad. In the summer of 2019, he will join the faculty of the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School.

Jeremy Rifkin: "The Zero Marginal Cost Society" | Talks at Google

56:59
In The Zero Marginal Cost Society, New York Times bestselling author Jeremy Rifkin describes how the emerging Internet of Things is speeding us to an era of nearly free goods and services, precipitating the meteoric rise of a global Collaborative Commons and the eclipse of capitalism. Rifkin uncovers a paradox at the heart of capitalism that has propelled it to greatness but is now taking it to its death—the inherent entrepreneurial dynamism of competitive markets that drives productivity up and marginal costs down, enabling businesses to reduce the price of their goods and services in order to win over consumers and market share. (Marginal cost is the cost of producing additional units of a good or service, if fixed costs are not counted.) While economists have always welcomed a reduction in marginal cost, they never anticipated the possibility of a technological revolution that might bring marginal costs to near zero, making goods and services priceless, nearly free, and abundant, and no longer subject to market forces. Now, a formidable new technology infrastructure—the Internet of things (IoT)—is emerging with the potential of pushing large segments of economic life to near zero marginal cost in the years ahead. Rifkin describes how the Communication Internet is converging with a nascent Energy Internet and Logistics Internet to create a new technology platform that connects everything and everyone. Billions of sensors are being attached to natural resources, production lines, the electricity grid, logistics networks, recycling flows, and implanted in homes, offices, stores, vehicles, and even human beings, feeding Big Data into an IoT global neural network. Prosumers can connect to the network and use Big Data, analytics, and algorithms to accelerate efficiency, dramatically increase productivity, and lower the marginal cost of producing and sharing a wide range of products and services to near zero, just like they now do with information goods. Rifkin concludes that capitalism will remain with us, albeit in an increasingly streamlined role, primarily as an aggregator of network services and solutions, allowing it to flourish as a powerful niche player in the coming era. We are, however, says Rifkin, entering a world beyond markets where we are learning how to live together in an increasingly interdependent global Collaborative Commons. --macmillan.com About the Author: Jeremy Rifkin is the bestselling author of twenty books on the impact of scientific and technological changes on the economy, the workforce, society, and the environment. He has been an advisor to the European Union for the past decade. Mr. Rifkin also served as an adviser to President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister Jose Socrates of Portugal, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain, and Prime Minister Janez Janša of Slovenia, during their respective European Council Presidencies, on issues related to the economy, climate change, and energy security. Mr. Rifkin is a senior lecturer at the Wharton School's Executive Education Program at the University of Pennsylvania where he instructs CEOs and senior management on transitioning their business operations into sustainable Third Industrial Revolution economies. Mr. Rifkin holds a degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. "Ask an Alpha Kappa Psi" - 1987

08:07
Distributed by the fraternity in 1987, this VHS recording was a recruitment tool chapters could use when meeting with prospective members. The following information was included with each VHS cassette: ------------------------ "Ask an Alpha Kappa Psi" is an introduction to America's oldest and largest Professional Business Fraternity. It is designed for orientation to our organization for prospective members and new chapter expansion. A 16mm film is available fo presentation to large groups. This presentation is an overview of Alpha Kappa Psi, and does not necessarily reflect the individual character of your chapter. When using this presentation for rushing, a chapter should prepare and present a follow-up verbal presentation that explains the activities and benefits of membership in their particular chapter. For continuity, the chapter message should, wherever possible, tie into the theme of the film/video "Ask an Alpha Kappa Psi." Presenters should always review the entire presentation before showing. If there are any problems with this tape, replacement copies are available from National Headquarters. (c) Ask an Alpha Kappa Psi, 1987.

The Choice is Ours (2016) Official Full Version

01:37:20
https://www.thevenusproject.com Intro: 0:00 Part 1 6:16 Part 2 23:28 Part 3 47:03 Part 4 1:19:09 Produced/Directed by Roxanne Meadows and Joel Holt Script by Roxanne Meadows Editor Joel Holt, assisted by Roxanne Meadows & Nathanael Dinwiddie Original Score by Kat Epple This film series explores many aspects of our society. To rethink what is possible in our world, we need to consider what kind of world we want to live in. Although we refer to it as a civilization, it is anything but civilized. Visions of global unity & fellowship have long inspired humanity, yet the social arrangements up to the present have largely failed to produce a peaceful and productive world. While we appear to be technically advanced, our values and behaviors are not. The possibility of an optimistic future is in stark contrast to our current social, economic, and environmental dilemmas. The Choice Is Ours includes interviews with notable scientists, media professionals, authors, and other thinkers exploring the difficulties we face. Part I provides an introduction and overview of cultural & environmental conditions that are untenable for a sustainable world civilization. It explores the determinants of behavior to dispel the myth of “human nature” while demonstrating how environment shapes behavior. The science of behavior is an important - yet largely missing - ingredient in our culture. Part II questions the values, behaviors, and consequences of our social structures, and illustrates how our global monetary system is obsolete and increasingly insufficient to meet the needs of most people. Critical consideration of the banking, media, and criminal justice systems reveals these institutions for what they really are: tools of social control managed by the established political and economic elite. If we stay the present course, the familiar cycles of crime, economic booms & busts, war, and further environmental destruction are inevitable. Part III explains the methods and potential of science. It proposes solutions that we can apply at present to eliminate the use of non-renewable sources of energy. It depicts the vision of The Venus Project to build an entirely new world from the ground up, a “redesign of the culture”, where all enjoy a high standard of living, free of servitude and debt, while also protecting the environment. Part IV explains how it is not just architecture and a social structure that is in desperate need of change, but our values which have been handed down from centuries ago. They too need to be updated to our technological age, which has the potential to eliminate our scarcity-driven societies of today. Our problems are mostly of our own making, but we can still turn things around before the point of no return. It’s not too late for an optimistic outlook on the fantastic possibilities that lie before us. Jacque Fresco-Futurist, Industrial Designer, Social Engineer, Founder of The Venus Project Jeffrey A. The Venus Project proposes an alternative vision of what the future can be if we apply what we already know in order to achieve a sustainable new world civilization. It calls for a straightforward redesign of our culture in which the age-old inadequacies of war, poverty, hunger, debt and unnecessary human suffering are viewed not only as avoidable but as totally unacceptable. Anything less will result in a continuation of the same catalog of problems inherent in today's world. Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin - with Vinay Gupta | Virtual Futures Salon

01:32:20
Virtual Futures presents tech-visionary Vinay Gupta to dicuss cryptocurrencies and the uptake of the blockchain in all its applications. This event is organised in partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick as part of their 360 Lecture Series. Blockchain, also known as distributed ledger technology, has attracted a great deal of attention due to the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Whilst blockchain technology might be able to drive economic change globally, the applications are innumerable. Among others, the implications include empowering impoverished individuals by bypassing banks for payments, generating personalized identities for voting, securing healthcare data, improving supply chain logistics, and allowing business to be carried out transparently. Vinay will share his thoughts on how a technology that permits secure and transparent solutions might transform the next decade. Vinay Gupta is a leading figure in the blockchain space. He is the co-founder of Mattereum, co-ordinated the release of the blockchain platform Ethereum in July 2015, and was strategic architect for ConsenSys, a technology hub focusing on the Ethereum blockchain and related applications. He was the designer of the National Blockchain Strategy for Dubai and is a partner at Hexayurt Capital, the technology-focused VC firm behind the Internet of Agreements. He has been involved in commercial software development since 1992 and his experience as a programmer and visionary has covered fields as diverse as medical imaging, flight simulation, computer graphics, cryptographic applications and the web. ROBERT DAVID STEELE: ON THE DEEP STATE & EVERYTHING ELSE #UNRIG

01:41:10
I interviewed Robert David Steele on Thursday, July 6, 2017. We talk about pedophilia, Trump, the deep state, 911, colonies on Mars and the moons of Saturn, underground bases and a host of other topics. Comments disabled due to troll activity! Short Bio: Robert David Steele is unique for being a former spy — the most published intelligence reformer in the English language — as well as the top Amazon reviewer for non-fiction, reading in 98 categories, and also recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. A long time manager of a global small business who has trained over 7,500 mid-career professionals from over 66 countries in open sources and methods of intelligence, his current passion is a non-profit educational company, Earth Intelligence Network (EIN). EIN has designed a World Brain construct and a PhD in Stewardship that emphasizes holistic analytics, true cost economics, and Open Source Everything Engineering (OSEE). This summer EIN is sponsoring #UNRIG, a 90-day national tour with Dr. Cynthia McKinney to educate voters on how they can take the power back across 435 Congressional Districts. Each District will soon have a #UNRIG MeetUp that could lead to forcing all 100 Senators and all 435 Representatives into passing the Election Reform Act of 2017 in September. If successful, Steele and McKinney envision the restoration of integrity to our government, to include a total commitment to evidence-based decision-making in the public interest. His motto is “the truth at any cost lowers all others costs.” Learn more about him at robertdavidsteele.com, and about the campaign at tinyurl.com/IndieGoGo-UNRIG. He blogs at phibetaiota.net.
