TRANSCRIPT: EXPLORE ACTIVITY -- 5.7 D: What Happened Before (Grade Level 5) [Overview Statement] In this activity, students excavate and explore different fossils from the same environment, and describe what the past was like when those organisms were living. [Materials] Prepare the following items in advance (for each group in your class): plastic or cardboard boxes filled with dirt, rock or sand; a set of Fossil Keys; a set of Fossil Cards and map pencils or crayons. [Part I Title:] Excavating Fossils Excavating fossils. [Section 1:] To begin, print and cut out the fossil assemblages leaving the depth signifier for sorting. Setup up fossil stations and bury the cards in different types of Earth matter to enhance the excavation theme. After removing the cards, students sort them into 6 groups. Use the 3 fossil keys to verify the type of rock in which each was found, as well as the type. Match the fossil to the organism from which it originated, taking note of its depth. FADE TO BLACK. FADE IN. [Section 2:] In the student journal, sketch each fossil by group and record information about the organism and its habitat when it was alive. Use the Rock Type Key to identify the rock and associate the material with its environment. As a final exercise, determine how old the rocks are by recording the depth of each of the 6 habitats, starting with the oldest and deepest rock layer at the bottom. FADE TO BLACK. END CREDITS.
