This video reviews the scales of measurement covered in introductory statistics: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio (Part 1 of 2). Scales of Measurement Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, Ratio YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/statisticsinstructor Subscribe today! Lifetime access to SPSS videos: http://tinyurl.com/m2532td Video Transcript: In this video we'll take a look at what are known as the scales of measurement. OK first of all measurement can be defined as the process of applying numbers to objects according to a set of rules. So when we measure something we apply numbers or we give numbers to something and this something is just generically an object or objects so we're assigning numbers to some thing or things and when we do that we follow some sort of rules. Now in terms of introductory statistics textbooks there are four scales of measurement nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. We'll take a look at each of these in turn and take a look at some examples as well, as the examples really help to differentiate between these four scales. First we'll take a look at nominal. Now in a nominal scale of measurement we assign numbers to objects where the different numbers indicate different objects. The numbers have no real meaning other than differentiating between objects. So as an example a very common variable in statistical analyses is gender where in this example all males get a 1 and all females get a 2. Now the reason why this is nominal is because we could have just as easily assigned females a 1 and males a 2 or we could have assigned females 500 and males 650. It doesn't matter what number we come up with as long as all males get the same number, 1 in this example, and all females get the same number, 2. It doesn't mean that because females have a higher number that they're better than males or males are worse than females or vice versa or anything like that. All it does is it differentiates between our two groups. And that's a classic nominal example. Another one is baseball uniform numbers. Now the number that a player has on their uniform in baseball it provides no insight into the player's position or anything like that it just simply differentiates between players. So if someone has the number 23 on their back and someone has the number 25 it doesn't mean that the person who has 25 is better, has a higher average, hits more home runs, or anything like that it just means they're not the same playeras number 23. So in this example its nominal once again because the number just simply differentiates between objects. Now just as a side note in all sports it's not the same like in football for example different sequences of numbers typically go towards different positions. Like linebackers will have numbers that are different than quarterbacks and so forth but that's not the case in baseball. So in baseball whatever the number is it provides typically no insight into what position he plays. OK next we have ordinal and for ordinal we assign numbers to objects just like nominal but here the numbers also have meaningful order. So for example the place someone finishes in a race first, second, third, and so on. If we know the place that they finished we know how they did relative to others. So for example the first place person did better than second, second did better than third, and so on of course right that's obvious but that number that they're assigned one, two, or three indicates how they finished in a race so it indicates order and same thing with the place finished in an election first, second, third, fourth we know exactly how they did in relation to the others the person who finished in third place did better than someone who finished in fifth let's say if there are that many people, first did better than third and so on. So the number for ordinal once again indicates placement or order so we can rank people with ordinal data. OK next we have interval. In interval numbers have order just like ordinal so you can see here how these scales of measurement build on one another but in addition to ordinal, interval also has equal intervals between adjacent categories and I'll show you what I mean here with an example. So if we take temperature in degrees Fahrenheit the difference between 78 degrees and 79 degrees or that one degree difference is the same as the difference between 45 degrees and 46 degrees. One degree difference once again. So anywhere along that scale up and down the Fahrenheit scale that one degree difference means the same thing all up and down that scale. OK so if we take eight degrees versus nine degrees the difference there is one degree once again. That's a classic interval scale right there with those differences are meaningful and we'll contrast this with ordinal in just a few moments but finally before we do let's take a look at ratio.

This video features what was nearly a 14TB brick -- our Synology DS1515+ NAS that won't turn on or boot. Pressing the power button doesn't do anything. Ad: Thermaltake View 37 on Amazon http://geni.us/ttview37gn Buy a GN Modmat here: https://store.gamersnexus.net/products/modmat Our Synology DS1515+ NAS died. It won't turn on, the power button doesn't seem to do anything, and the power supply still checks as OK with a PSU tester. Apparently, these units had a very common failure from dying power supplies, motherboards, or other lower level issues. Major concerns include saving the RAID and all the data (which will primarily save time, as we do have a lot of it backed up), but also moving to a more reliable box going forward. We found out that the Synology NAS power supply uses the same ATX 24-pin power cable as a computer power supply, and so used that troubleshooting option to replace the DS1515+ PSU with something else. Do you need to know math to do machine learning? Yes! The big 4 math disciplines that make up machine learning are linear algebra, probability theory, calculus, and statistics. I'm going to cover how each are used by going through a linear regression problem that predicts the price of an apartment in NYC based on its price per square foot. Then we'll switch over to a logistic regression model to change it up a bit. This will be a hands-on way to see how each of these disciplines are used in the field. Slides: http://lyra.berkeley.edu/CDIConf/pdfs/Scalzo.pdf Fabien Scalzo: "Pattern Recognition Methods For Efficient Alarm-based Patient Monitoring". A video from the UC Berkeley Conference: From Data to Knowledge: Machine-Learning with Real-time and Streaming Applications (May 7-11, 2012). Abstract Fabien Scalzo (UCLA, Neurosurgery) Bedside monitors are omnipresent in intensive care units (ICU) of modern hospitals. They are designed to continuously analyze clinically relevant signals and attract the attention of the critical care nurse by emitting an alarm sound. Although alarm-based patient monitoring systems are life-saving tools, it has also been recognized that most of the alarms produced are false (up to 85%). False alarms are a major issue that causes alarm fatigue, waste of human resources, and increased patient risks. As currently implemented in bedside monitors, alarms are triggered by manually adjusted thresholds. This talk describes our latest works about intelligent alarm detection systems based on the dynamic of the signal and waveform patterns observed prior to threshold crossing. Experimental evaluation is performed on a comprehensive dataset of 4791 manually labelled intracranial pressure alarm episodes extracted from 154 neurosurgical patients. In addition to this pilot study, we introduce the concept of SuperAlarms that abstracts specific temporal co-occurrences of alarms. SuperAlarms are higher-level indicators of ongoing patient deteriorations and hence predictive of in-hospital emergency codes.

You can see the current version of the slides at https://pythonlinks.info/presentations/zodbtalk.pdf I invite you to first watch the full but slightly earlier version of the talk at PythonLinks.info/zodb And then read the following summary to see what else is being added to the talk. The ZODB is a mature graph database written in Python and optimized in C. Just subclass off of class Persistent Object and Persistent Container, and your objects, graphs and applications become persistent. The market for Graph Databases has recently exploded, as evidenced by over $200 Million invested in graph database companies. Most of the graph databases are written in Java. If you are a Python developer, you will find much greater productivity using a graph database written in Python, than one written in statically bound Java. You cannot add or remove an attribute to an object at run-time in a statically typed language. Furthermore, the major Java databases constrain you to one of several persistent data types. Persistent Python, supported by the ZODB allows you to make any Python data structure persistent. Publishing JSON, YAML and Pickles are well supported. GraphQL is conceptually very close to the ZODB schema approach. Okay, the ZODB is interesting, but is it risky? The ZODB is mature, rock solid and well supported. The ZODB is quite heavily used in the Plone world. Just the government of Brazil has over 100 websites using the ZODB. That includes the President's office, parliament and many other governmet offices. Recently the ZODB has been reengineered. It now supports thousands of write transactions per second. The major applications of graph databases are fraud detection, social networks and computer networks. NLP is an interesting application area. The talk reviews the basic concepts of traversal and views on objects. It is important to understand the basics of how objects are stored on disk. Objects are pickled. There are multiple ways to store those pickles. When using File Storage, the objects in a transaction are appended to he end of the database files. When using relstorage, a record is created with the object id, the version number, and the pickle. The talk reviews how objects are distributed across multiple Python processes. With ZEO the pickles are served across the network. Connections are encrypted. The talk also discusses how to build real-time (chat and iOT) applications using the MQTT message broker with the ZODB. Performance, scalability, and number of objects, are all discussed. Comparisons are made to traditional relational databases. The ZODB Demo makes it very easy to start building your own applications on top of the ZODB. You can start by customizing the TreeLeaf, TreeBranch and TreeRoot classes and their templates. You get CRUD for free. The demo includes traditional relational CRUD, Create, Read, Update, and Delete. But it also includes the extended graph CRUD. Rename a Leaf or Branch. Cut and paste leaves or branches, copy and paste leaves or branches. View and restore historic versions are demonstrated. Of course the real reason to use a graph database is to improve the user experience. A basic concept in human factors is to limit lists to 7 items. That is why librarians use hierarchy. The Panama Papers journalists said a graph database was more intuitive. Have you ever selected your country from a list of 150 countries. Much better to use a hierarchical list. Have you ever used a Google map with thousands of pins. Much better to have one page for each city. And of course the most important reason for using a graph database is not what the software does, but how it changes how we humans think about our problems, and how we make decisions. Graph databases enable a different approach to distributing applications across the network. They encourage a different approach to managing the git development process. They enable a different set of decisions to be made. By the end of this talk, readers should have a much better appreciation for the rich but little known and under appreciated ZODB ecosystem.

We do not offer promotional or advertising services. Our content is based on our own research, analysis and personal opinion. _______________________________________ What does the company/project do? DxChain is developing a decentralized big data and machine learning network. The project is based on the premise that data is valuable and data creators should be able to own and benefit from their own data. The team aims to tackle major big data issues such as privacy, ownership, and security while supporting business intelligence and machine learning applications. With DxChain’s decentralized data exchange platform, users would be able to own and control their own data, and securely trade and analyze data. Utilizing blockchain technology featuring multi-nodes and distributed storage, the costs of data retrieval and storage would also be reduced significantly. DxChain is based on a chains-on-chain architecture which includes one master chain and two side chains. The structure was designed as such in order to solve multiple issues related to data computation, storage, and privacy issues; this would otherwise be difficult to do simultaneously with only one chain. _______________________________________ What are the tokens used for and how can token holders make money? The DX token is the network’s native protocol token. The token will initially be issued as ERC-20 tokens after the crowdsale and will be migrated to the DxChain mainnet after it is launched. There are several uses for the tokens: - DX tokens will serve as a secure and primary method of payment between participants in the network. - Providers of computational and storage resources that are required for running various apps and transactions will be rewarded with DX tokens. - Miners will be rewarded with DX tokens based on the usefulness of work that they passively provide. DX tokens should appreciate in value as more users join and use the network. This is driven by numerous factors, including the number and type of applications available on the platform, user experience, data storage capacity and processing speed, etc. _______________________________________ Opportunities - Concerns over data ownership and privacy is becoming more and more prevalent around the world. The recent enactment of the GDPR in the European Union shows how serious the issue has become for both individuals and governments on legitimate collection and use of personal data. - If the team is successful in decentralizing Hadoop, a distributed file storage and computation solution, we believe it provides a substantial potential. - The team has a strong technical background and relevant working experience in the fields of big data, distributed systems, blockchain research, network security, and so on. _______________________________________ Concerns - Proof of Spacetime is a new concept and no established blockchain is currently using it. It is unclear whether this concept will ultimately work. While PoST doesn’t require expensive mining hardware, there is still the concern that a rich player, such as a nation state or a manufacturer that enjoys cost advantage, could employ a large amount of storage and get to sign most blocks. - Multiple key members of the team are still working at Trustlook. We are unsure how they will allocate their time between the two ventures. _______________________________________ Disclaimer The information in this video is for educational purposes only and is not investment advice. Chemistry-aware peptide data analysis, not to mention peptide prospective design support from computer tools, is largely missing. In most organizations, peptide analysis & design is carried out using Excel sheets — an infrastructure that is genuinely inappropriate for this task: There is missing chemistry-awareness such as cyclizations, no support for any predictive methodologies, no clear and minimalist, target-focused user interface (UX/UI), inappropriate reporting functionality, and many more shortcomings such as data integrity management. In collaboration with Zealand Pharma, a leading and experienced therapeutic peptide specialist in Copenhagen, we conceived a tool with the major focus of having it rolled-out and operational ASAP, targeting the most relevant problems and most ugly time-eaters first thus boosting the efficiency of the organization. After approx. 2 years, we can now roll out the tool in its current status to the general public, and academics can use it for free. PepSee sports, amongst others: - visual pattern recognition support for SAR work - versatile colorings, for ex. by mutation differences to a reference peptide - a plethora of sorting and filtering facilities - FASTA, PLN, and TXT import - XLS export - on-the-fly alignment including manual intervention - interfaces to predictive methods such as fibrillation highlighting, and allows validation and registration of new sequences - A first PDF text mining function pulling peptides from patents et al. https://www.biosolveit.de/PepSee

Ankr aims to build a resource efficient blockchain framework that enables distributed cloud computing. Learn more: https://crushcrypto.com/ankr-ico-review/ Project website: https://www.ankr.network/ Download the PDF version of the presentation: https://crushcrypto.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/CrushCrypto-ICO-Review-Ankr-ANK.pdf Download the free ICO Guide which contains 6 simple steps for analyzing any ICOs to find the winning projects: https://crushcrypto.com/youtube/ Note: This is not a paid review. We do not offer promotional or advertising services. Our content is based on our own research, analysis and personal opinion. _______________________________________ What does the company/project do? Ankr aims to build a resource efficient blockchain framework that enables distributed cloud computing and provides user-friendly infrastructure for business applications. Its blockchain infrastructure will be based on Proof-of-Useful-Work (PoUW) consensus on an SGX-enabled trusted execution environment (TEE). Below are the main features of Ankr: Proof of Useful Work (PoUW) Consensus Protocol PoUW consensus allows a blockchain to achieve security without wasting energy. A SGX-protected hardware enclave provides a TEE to testify miners’ useful computations and providing proof for mining rewards. Distributed Cloud Computing (DCC) Platform DCC platform allows transacting for computing power between users in a peer-to-peer fashion. With the PoUW consensus mechanism, miners will use their idle computing resources to secure the network while performing useful computation, for example, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and so on. The miners create the supply for the DCC platform. Individuals/companies that need extra computing resources would form the demand side of the DCC. DCC lowers the barrier of entry to cloud computing comparing to the existing cloud computing services. Oracle Service Ankr introduces an authenticated data feed system using trusted hardware. The system is comprised of 3 components – smart contact, enclave, and the relay. Multi-Chain Structure Ankr aims to scale the blockchain by implementing Plasma and sharding. The network consists of a tree structure of blockchains where various application chains (Child Chains) are connected to a single root chain (Main Chain). The Main Chain is used for child chain indexing, useful work mining and smart contract executions. Each child chain is tailored to the needs of a specific application. For example, real estate transactions are of high value but low volume, whereas e-commerce transactions are the other way around. _______________________________________ What are the tokens used for and how can token holders make money? ANK tokens serve as a storage of value and as a means to transfer value. They also serve as the computation fees of PoUW for miners. The more demand for computing power and more activities happen on the Ankr platform and create a more active platform, the more valuable ANK tokens should be. _______________________________________ Opportunities - The project is very ambitious that is trying to tackle multiple big problems facing blockchain including consensus protocol (PoUW), trusted hardware, data feed (Oracle), distributed computing, and sidechain structure. If successful, the upside can be substantial. - PoUW is a novel idea that can potentially unlock a massive amount of computing power and put into productive means. - The project has received strong backings from various reputable institutional investors. _______________________________________ Concerns - The project needs a robust number of suppliers and providers of distributed computing to create a strong network effect. However, there is no business partnership/go-to-market strategy disclosed to ensure adoption of the platform. - The roadmap doesn’t go beyond July 2018, which makes it difficult to gauge the level of planning the team has regarding major milestones. - Certain key members of the team, including the CEO and COO, are fresh out of college and have limited working experience. _______________________________________ Disclaimer The information in this video is for educational purposes only and is not investment advice. In this study, we attempt to employ visual analytics that combines the state-of-the-art mining and visualization techniques to tackle this problem using large-scale GPS trajectory data. In particular, we present SmartAdP, an interactive visual analytics system that deals with the two major challenges including finding good solutions in a huge solution space and comparing the solutions in a visual and intuitive manner. An interactive framework that integrates a novel visualization-driven data mining model enables advertising planners to effectively and efficiently formulate good candidate solutions. In addition, we propose a set of coupled visualizations: a solution view with metaphor-based glyphs to visualize the correlation between different solutions; a location view to display billboard locations in a compact manner; and a ranking view to present multi-typed rankings of the solutions. This system has been demonstrated using case studies with a real-world dataset and domain-expert interviews. Our approach can be adapted for other location selection problems such as selecting locations of retail stores or restaurants using trajectory data.

So we've talked a lot in this series about how computers fetch and display data, but how do they make decisions on this data? From spam filters and self-driving cars, to cutting edge medical diagnosis and real-time language translation, there has been an increasing need for our computers to learn from data and apply that knowledge to make predictions and decisions. This is the heart of machine learning which sits inside the more ambitious goal of artificial intelligence. We may be a long way from self-aware computers that think just like us, but with advancements in deep learning and artificial neural networks our computers are becoming more powerful than ever.
