The miner’s revenue in Australia fell by more than $132 million as the discount continued to grow towards the end of 2017. #MinRes, #buysKoolyanobbing, #save, #hundreds, #mine, #jobs #BusinessMiningBusinessIronore

American History - Part 130 - Immigration in the 1880s

13:24
Cloth factories in Fall River, Massachusetts, were filled with young men from Lancashire, England. Most of the workers in the shipyards of San Francisco were from Scotland. Many of the coal miners in America were men from the British mines in Wales. Many were farmers who came to America because they could get land for nothing. They could build new farms for themselves in the rich land of the American west. One of the best-liked songs in Britain then was a song about the better life in America. Its name: "To The West." Its words helped many men decide to make the move to America. "To the West, to the West, to the land of the free Where mighty Missouri rolls down to the sea; Where a man is a man if he's willing to toil. And the poorest may harvest the fruits of the soil. Where the young may exult and the aged may rest, Away, far away, to the land of the west." To another group of immigrants, America was the last hope. Ireland in the eighteen forties suffered one crop failure after another. Hungry men had to leave. In eighteen fifty alone, more than one hundred seventeen thousand people came to the United States from Ireland. Most had no money and little education. To those men and women, America was a magic name. As the years passed, fewer people were moving to America for a better job. Most were coming now for any job at all. Work was hard to find in any of the cities in Europe. In the next ten years, millions of people made the move from Britain, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. But then, as industry in those countries grew larger, and more jobs opened, the flood of immigration began to slow. The immigrants now were coming from southern and eastern Europe. Anti-Jewish feeling swept Russia and Poland. Violence against Jews caused many of them to move to America. In the late eighteen eighties, cholera spread through much of southern Italy. Fear of the disease led many families to leave for the United States. Others left when their governments began building up strong armies. Young men who did not want to be soldiers often escaped by moving to America. Big armies were costly, and many people left because they did not want to pay the high taxes. Whatever the reason, people continued to emigrate to the United States. These new immigrants were not like those who came earlier. These new immigrants had no skills. Most were unable to read or write. Factory owners found that these eastern and southern Europeans were hard workers. They did not protest because the work was hard and the pay was low. They did not demand better working conditions. They did not join unions or strike. Factory owners began to replace higher-paid American and British workers with the new immigrants. Business leaders wanted more of the new workers. They urged the immigrants to write letters to their friends and relatives in the old country. "Tell them to come to America, that there are plenty of jobs." Letters from America brought many more immigrants. The big steamship companies also helped industry to get more of the new workers. They paid thousands of agents throughout Europe to sell tickets for the trip to America. Their efforts meant that steamships bringing grain to Europe could return to America filled with immigrants. They came by the hundreds of thousands. People of all religions, from all across Europe. Many remained in New York and other eastern cities. But many others moved westward. They took jobs in the steel factories of Pennsylvania and the coal mines of West Virginia. They worked in the lumber camps of Michigan and in the stockyards and meat-packing plants of Chicago. Within a few years, foreign-born workers held most of the unskilled jobs in many American industries. American workers began to protest. They demanded an end to the flood of immigration. That will be our story in the next program of THE MAKING OF A NATION

The Government Handout Republicans and Democrats Like

03:51
While some people dread tax season, millions of American workers look forward to the direct cash transfer they receive from the IRS each year to top off their income. The program, known as the Earned Income Tax Credit, has surprisingly conservative roots. Along with the smaller Child Tax Credit, the credit more children out of poverty than any other government handout and has become an area Democrats and Republican can kind of agree on. Take a look at how the Earned Income Tax Credit affects people’s lives in New York’s 15th Congressional District in the South Bronx, where more people receive the payout than in any other part of the country. American History - Part 131 - Cleveland - Fights Tariffs - Anti Immigration bill

13:14
American factory owners were pleased with the new immigrants. They gave them jobs formerly held by higher-paid American workers. The owners asked the new workers to write letters to friends still in the old country, urging them to come to America. And they came by the hundreds of thousands to take jobs in steel factories in Pennsylvania and the coal mines of West Virginia. They worked in the lumber camps of Michigan and in the stockyards and the meat-packing plants of Chicago. American workers then began to protest, as their jobs were filled by immigrants who were happy to work for less money. The protests were especially bitter on the pacific coast where thousands of Chinese immigrants were settling in California. The Chinese arrived there after eighteen fifty to help build western railroads. After the railroads were completed, these Chinese new-comers turned to other jobs. More came every year. By the eighteen seventies, California's political leaders were demanding an end to further immigration from China. In eighteen eighty-two, Congress passed a law that barred Chinese immigration for ten years. The law was extended for another ten years then made permanent. The immigration law of eighteen eighty-two put other limits on immigration. It closed the country to criminals, the mentally ill, and persons who could not support themselves. Later, others were added to this list. Persons with diseases. Anarchists. Alcoholics. This, however, did not greatly reduce immigration from eastern and southern Europe. And opponents of immigration demanded stronger action. Some proposed a literacy test. Immigrants would have to show that they could read and write. An immigrant who could not, would not be permitted to enter the country. Congress passed the proposal. President Cleveland, however, vetoed it. He said the nation had nothing to fear from immigrants who could not read or write. He said there was greater danger from some of the educated immigrants who urged violence and anarchy. It took a number of years before Congress was able to pass a law demanding a literacy test for immigrants. Another problem troubled President Cleveland. High tariffs -- taxes on imports. Soon after his election, Cleveland decided to learn what he could about the tariff. "I'm sorry to say," said Cleveland, "but the truth is, I know nothing about the tariff." Cleveland studied all the information he could find about the tariff. He found that the tariff was used not only to get money for the government, but to protect American industry from foreign competition. The tariffs had been raised so high that they were producing more money than the government needed. Cleveland decided that high tariffs were wrong. He told other democratic leaders that he would try to get them reduced. So, late in eighteen eighty-seven, Cleveland sent a tariff message to Congress. He said it was wrong to raise more tax money than the government needed. When this happens, he said, money is withdrawn from the people's use and kept in the public treasury, where it does no good. It threatens the economy and invites dishonest attempts to use the money for private interests. The government, he said, received most of this unnecessary tax money from tariffs. He said the present tariff laws were vicious, unfair, and illogical. He said they raised the prices of all imported goods which could be taxed. They also led American manufacturers to raise their prices as high as those charged for imported goods. Cleveland said some men had become rich, because protective tariffs let them charge high prices. He noted that American businessmen like to talk about the strength and success of American industry. But he said that when the question of the tariff is raised, businessmen claim that industry is weak. They say they cannot compete with low-priced foreign products. Cleveland said he did not propose that all tariffs be ended. He said some were needed to raise money for the government. And he said some industries could not exist unless they were protected by tariffs. But he said tariffs should not let some industries make huge profits. Cleveland warned that it would be far better to make safe, careful, and intelligent changes in the tariff laws now. Otherwise, he said, there might come a time when an angry public would demand radical and sweeping changes. The Democrats promised low tariffs that would mean lower prices for the people. The Republicans defended high tariffs, which they said were necessary to protect American industry and labor. The Democrats nominated Grover Cleveland for another four-year term. The Republicans held their nominating convention two weeks later. That will be our story next week.

Elon's Boring Tunnel & Race To Divorce: VICE News Tonight Full Episode (HBO)

25:26
This is the December 19, 2018 FULL EPISODE of VICE News Tonight on HBO. 2:17 Wednesday marks 20 years since President Clinton was impeached. VICE News sat down with former special counsel Ken Starr and discussed the Mueller probe (and Starr’s book). 9:24 Elon Musk's Boring Company is opening its first test Tunnel to the press and public on Tuesday. Although there has been a lot of press and fanfare about this debut, it's not clear what this means in terms of actually creating something that will be a part of Los Angeles' transit system. The city government offered a rare exemption from environmental review for this 1.7 mile tunnel, but did not allow that for other planned tunnels on the West Side. We'll visit with an engineer explaining past mass transit efforts in L.A. and ride along in the new tunnel when it opens. 13:09 VICE News sits down with Senator Dick Durbin to talk about the First Step Act which Senate leaders passed last night. Durbin, who originally opposed the bill, says essentially that Democrats should take what they can get. He says this a minor step in addressing criminal justice reform. 16:55 Under the GOP’s tax overhaul, divorce agreements finalized after Jan 1, 2019 will no longer be eligible for a 75-year old tax deduction for alimony payments. But splits inked before the new year will be grandfathered in under the old rules, for the life of their agreements, which is sending some divorce lawyers into a December divorce overdrive. 22:35 Anderson Paak is back to review new music this week. Trump Tax Protests Mostly Peaceful

00:55
Demanding that President Donald Trump release his tax returns, so Americans can scrutinize his business ties and potential conflicts of interest, thousands of chanting, sign-carrying protesters took to the streets in cities across the nation Saturday. During the largely peaceful demonstrations, violent clashes were the exception. In Berkeley, California, police arrested 13 people. After fistfights broke out between factions that support and oppose Trump, they confiscated knives and makeshift weapons. Saying it was because he was under audit, Trump was the first major-party nominee in more than 40 years not to release his tax returns. He later said that voters don't care. According to 71-year-old Ilene Singh, however, he's wrong. She rode a bus from New Jersey to New York City with her friend 83 year old friend Geraldine Markowitz to take part in protests. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-04-15-US--Tax%20Day-Rallies/id-11f9f8a83de748969f2f53575df85014 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Decolonizing Language Revitalization

01:56:24
September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. The Shock Doctrine [2009] Documentary by Naomi Klein

01:18:59
The Shock Doctrine is Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein's companion piece to her popular 2007 book of the same name. In short, the shock doctrine is a theory for explaining the way that force, stealth and crisis are used in implementing neoliberal economic policies such as privatization, deregulation and cuts to social services. The shock doctrine suggests that in periods of chaos often following wars, coups, natural disasters and economic panics, pro-corporate reformers aggressively push through unpopular “free market” measures. Klein posits that followers of Milton Friedman and other market fundamentalists have been perfecting this very strategy: waiting for a major crisis, then selling off pieces of the state to private players while citizens were still reeling from the shock, then quickly making the "reforms" permanent. The video was converted from the PAL DVD upscaled from 576i to 720p. This film is Copyright 2009 Shock Films Ltd. Symposium of Architectural History The Whiteness of 19th Century American Architecture

04:05:17
This symposium examines the racial discourses that subtended "American Architecture" movements during the long nineteenth century. Explore this site to learn more about the specific themes, case studies and speakers that will be featured at this event. "The Whiteness of American Architecture" is organized by Charles Davis II, UB assistant professor of architecture. About the symposium “The Whiteness of 19th Century American Architecture” is a one-day symposium in architectural history organized by the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo. This symposium is an outgrowth of the Race + Modern Architecture Project, an interdisciplinary workshop on the racial discourses of western architectural history from the Enlightenment to the present. Participants - Professor Mabel O. Wilson, Columbia GSAPP - Dianne Harris, senior program officer at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation - Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, architectural historian - Kathryn ‘Kate’ Holliday, architectural historian - Charles Davis, assistant professor of architectural history and criticism at the University at Buffalo Race + Modern Architecture Project Race + Modern Architecture logo The “Whiteness & American Architecture” symposium continues the research that began with the Race + Modern Architecture Project, a workshop conducted at Columbia University in 2013. The forthcoming co-edited volume, Race and Modern Architecture presents a collection of seventeen groundbreaking essays by distinguished scholars writing on the critical role of racial theory in shaping architectural discourse, from the Enlightenment to the present. The book, which grows out of a collaborative, interdisciplinary, multi-year research project, redresses longstanding neglect of racial discourses among architectural scholars. With individual essays exploring topics ranging from the role of race in eighteenth-century, Anglo-American neoclassical architecture, to 1970s radical design, the book reveals how the racial has been deployed to organize and conceptualize the spaces of modernity, from the individual building to the city to the nation to the planet. Sponsors - Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture - Columbia University - Darwin D. Martin House Complex - Buffalo, NY - School of Architecture - Victoria University of Wellington - UB Humanities Institute - University at Buffalo, SUNY - School of Architecture and Planning - University at Buffalo, SUNY Purpose and Themes Our symposium will outline a critical history of the white cultural nationalisms that have proliferated under the rubric of "American Architecture" during the long nineteenth century. This theme will be explored chronologically from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century and regionally from representative avant-garde movements on the East Coast to the regionalist architectural styles of the Midwest and West Coast. Such movements included the neoclassical revivals of the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, the Chicago School of Architecture and the Prairie Style, the East Bay Style on the West Coast, the Arts & Crafts movement across the continent, and various interwar movements that claimed to find unique historical origins for an autochthonous American style of building. The five architectural historians in attendance have been charged with providing some preliminary answers to the central question of these proceedings: What definitions of American identity have historically influenced the most celebrated national architectural movements of the long nineteenth century, and how was this influence been manifested in the labor relations, ideological commitments and material dimensions of innovative architectural forms?

Live: President Trump at Make America Great Again rally from Minnesota

57:34
President Trump held a boisterous campaign-style rally in Duluth, Minn., Wednesday night, his 14th trip to a state he narrowly lost since that 2016 election, according to CBS News' Mark Knoller's count. The topics covered ranged from the Inspector General's report into the Clinton email scandal, opening up mining in Superior National Forest, Immigration policy, and the friendly relationship President Trump claims to have with China's president, Xi Jinping. As-it-happened updates: https://www.cbsnews.com/media/trump-to-hold-rally-in-minnesota-live-updates/ The rally in Duluth was ostensibly for for Pete Stauber, a Republican congressional candidate running in the traditionally Democratic 8th District. Home of the state's famed Iron Range, Minnesota is important ground for Trump as a place where his new tariffs on foreign steel could play especially well. The GOP primary is set for Aug. 14. But Mr. Trump hasn't held back on his opinions of GOP incumbents he dislikes. The night before a primary for Republican Rep. Mark Sanford of North Carolina, the president blasted Sanford on Twitter and urged people to vote for his primary opponent. Sanford lost. On Capitol Hill Tuesday night, Mr. Trump again mocked Sanford in a meeting with House Republicans, reportedly calling him "nasty." -- Subscribe to the CBS News Channel HERE: http://youtube.com/cbsnews Watch CBSN live HERE: http://cbsn.ws/1PlLpZ7 Follow CBS News on Instagram HERE: https://www.instagram.com/cbsnews/ Like CBS News on Facebook HERE: http://facebook.com/cbsnews Follow CBS News on Twitter HERE: http://twitter.com/cbsnews Get the latest news and best in original reporting from CBS News delivered to your inbox.
