Indian mining giant Adani has announced it will scale back its proposed Carmichael mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin, but begin construction 'imminently', using its own funds. But the company still faces numerous obstacles including groundwater approval and native title. Most of all, it has its eyes on the impending federal election and the uncertain position of a potential incoming Labor government on the mine. Ben Smee breaks down the state of play

Adani has cancelled all contracts awarded to Downer for works on its Carmichael Coal Mine after the Queensland Government vetoed a taxpayer-funded loan. Adani has flagged that it will now build and operate the mine itself in an attempt to minimise costs. “Following on from the NAIF veto last week, and in line with its vision to achieve the lowest quartile cost of production by ensuring flexibility and efficiencies in the supply chain, Adani has decided to develop and operate the mine on an owner operator basis,’’ Adani said in a statement. Adani originally intended to outsource development and operation of the Carmichael mine and signed a conditional $2.6 billion with Downer to provide these services. However, today Adani and Downer have mutually agreed to cancel this contract. “Adani and Downer have mutually agreed to cancel all Letter of Awards and Downer will provide transitional assistance until March 31, 2018,’’ the company said. “Adani remains committed to develop the Carmichael project and will ensure the highest level of standards and governance. “This will not affect our commitment or the number of local jobs across Queensland. This is simply a change in management structure and ensures that the mine will ultimately be run out of our Adani Australia offices in Townsville. “Adani Australia currently employs over 800 people and has invested over $3.3B in Queensland, which is the biggest investments by an Indian company in Australia.’’ It was a campaign promise of Queensland’s Labor Government to veto the loan, a move they took once they had secured power after the election. Adani is still seeking funding for the mine. Earlier in December, Chinese lenders declined to provide finance to Adani for the Carmichael coal mine. All four major Australian banks have ruled out funding the mine. This decision has ended three years of negotiations between Adani and Downer

Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them: https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/mining/thousands-of-mining-jobs-are-waiting-in-western-australia-but-aussies-dont-want-them/news-story/9abb09bee9c85fc6419597a14e77df3e. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd_ODCcrc4jEWgi4qYyy0wg?sub_confirmation=1 From 2012 to 2016, the mining industry experienced a severe downturn, culling close to 60,000 jobs and making full-time work an almost impossible get. But now, especially in Western Australia and Queensland, the mining industry is on the road to recovery — and companies are begging Aussies to come and work for them. According to the latest data from SEEK, the mining, resource and energy sector has consistently recorded the largest growth in job ads for the past 11 months. The sector is throwing out 32 per cent more job ads now than it was at the same time last year and is posting almost four times more job ads than Australia’s average. But just because mining companies are putting out thousands of ads and offering salaries paying well over $150,000 doesn’t mean Aussies are picking them up. Earlier this week, the CEO of WA’s Chamber of Minerals and Energy backed a migration agreement that would hopefully combat a severe skills shortage in the mining region of the Goldfields. If approved, the Designated Area Migration Agreement would allow overseas workers to be flown over to work in the mines and would make them exempt from the skilled migrants requirement. Chief executive Paul Everingham told the ABC there were more than 1000 vacancies in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining sector and said the region was at crisis point. “You can’t sugar coat that — they’re available now and they’re not being filled, so however you can get them (workers),” Mr Everingham said. “All Australian companies want to employ Australians first, but if there aren’t enough Australians … we have got to remember there’s an infrastructure boom going on in NSW. “So if we have to set up special immigration or work zones, our members would definitely welcome the ability to get access to skilled workers immediately.” The WA mining industry is advertising for thousands of jobs ranging from cleaners to tradesmen to university-educated engineers. But following Mr Everidge’s comments, a number of people involved in the state’s mining industry have said more needs to be done to make relocating an attractive proposition. Despite the huge salaries fly-in fly-out workers earn, most complain of having no work-life balance. FIFO workers typically have higher rates of suicide, struggle with depression due to long hours and loneliness and report higher rates of workplace bullying and alcoholism. In 2015, the West Australian government conducted a 10-month investigation into the state’s FIFO workforce. Lifeline WA admitted in October last year it still had no idea exactly how many FIFO workers were affected by mental illness or how many had committed suicide while away from their families to work in the state’s mines. Even the report issued after the lengthy investigation admitted “the inquiry struck several problem areas in relation to statistics”. “Clear data was difficult to find in the areas of: a definitive total number of workers employed in the Western Australia resources industry on a FIFO #Thousands, #mining, #jobs, #waiting, #WesternAustralia, #Aussies, #don’t, #want, #them #miningindustry, #mentalillness, #mentalhealth, #workersdying, #miningindustryaccounts, #flyinflyoutworkers, #Australiangovernment, #miningsector, #resourcesindustry, #Australiancompanies, #parttimework, #miningcompanies, #miningregion, #mentalhealthissues, #migrationagreement, #skilledmigrantsrequirement, #Companiestalk, #miningjobs, #worklifebalance, #suicidestatistics, #prevalencerate, #suiciderates, #crisispoint, #energysector, #productionsites, #skillsshortage, #problemareas, #WesternAustralia, #Australia, #AustraliaandNewZealand, #Oceania, #Queensland, #UniversityofWesternAustralia, #AustralianBureauofStatistics, #CommunityServices, #MentalHealthCommission, #ChamberofMineralsandEnergy, #PeterMiller, #PaulEveringham, #NatalieWolfe

Metro Mining Ltd (ASX:MMI) managing director & CEO Simon Finnis speaks with Proactive Investors about the bauxite producer’s Bauxite Hills Mine in northern Queensland, which began production in April. The Brisbane-based company is ramping up strongly on its way to producing 2 million tonnes of bauxite for 2018. Bauxite Hills has an estimated reserve of 92.2 million tonnes and total resources of 144.8 million tonnes and will deliver bauxite into China over a 17-year mine life. “Our primary focus now that we’ve commissioned Bauxite Hills is to grow that mine itself … 2018 is sold out and we’re actually looking for ways to escalate that expansion, so 3 million tonnes next year for us now is looking like it will be sold very quickly,” says Finnis.

MINING JOBS TV Episode 2: Mining Career Opportunities Welcome to the second episode of Mining Jobs TV. My name is Matt and I will be talking about career opportunities that are available in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. We understand that many people these days are looking at getting ahead financially and seeking career changes - for that reason mining is a great opportunity for many people, regardless of your skills and experience. You could be forgiven for thinking that mining is a fairly specialised profession and that to get a job in a mine, you need to have worked in one before. That may sometimes be the case, but as you'll soon discover, not always. The reality is that across the board, there are probably just as many jobs that DON'T require experience as those that do. Obviously, there are some positions that require certain levels of experience or qualifications that you may not possess. For example, you can't go from being a builder's labourer to a Principal Mine Geologist overnight. And it's highly unlikely that you'll be expected to progress from working in an accountant's office one day, to setting the explosives in an open cut coal mine the next. Keep in mind that the demand for people, both skilled and unskilled is huge, and opportunities exist across all levels. It is in every respect a jobseekers' market. You just need to know what you're looking for, and more importantly, how to look for it. In the last year, mining and resources jobs in Australia grew by an impressive 13% - a figure unmatched by any other job sector. By location, jobs have grown by 5% in Western Australia, 21% in Queensland and a whopping 42% in New South Wales. Simple mathematics will tell you that there are just not enough qualified or experienced people to fill those numbers. If you want to work in resources, it pays to be resourceful. A great way to start is by looking for jobs in mining that relate somehow to what you're doing now -- anything from cleaning to hospitality or admin people have all got skills the mining companies are looking for. The Seek.com.au website will actually help you do it. You start by selecting 'Mining, Resources & Energy' in the Classification box and then you can drill down from there, looking at current jobs that appear for your perusal. You will see that there are many skills and qualifications that are very transferrable from other industries to mining. Mines need engineers, plumbers, electricians, builders, boilermakers, welders, mechanics, IT personnel, HR people, medical staff, logistics experts, heavy vehicle drivers to name just a few. Australian mining companies employees people across a broad range of areas from unskilled labourers to mining engineers. There are also opportunities in administrative, human resources and management positions together with numerous trade related opportunities such as Trades Assistant, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Welders, Electricians and Plumbers. But what if you don't have any skills or experience that relate to the mining industry? Fear not - there are still loads of entry level mining for you to choose from and you'll find many of them on the SEEK website. You'll soon discover that mines need a whole host of people like drillers' offsiders, administrative assistants, cooks and catering staff, cleaners and maintenance staff, childcare workers and general labourers. And many of these positions require no experience whatsoever. All you need to bring is a sense of adventure, flexibility and a willingness to work. As you have probably heard, mining jobs are achievable yet very competitive. It is not unusual for HR Managers to receive 500 or 1000 plus resumes for an advertised vacancy ... so it's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. I enjoyed talking to you today about mining jobs and hope that you have found this episode helpful and I look forward to talking to you again in Episode 3 where I will provide an insight into unskilled and entry level mining jobs. If you aren't already signed up to receive the Mining Jobs episodes, fill out your name and email address in the box at the bottom right hand side of our website at miningjobs.tv or email us at [email protected] Thanks for watching and see you next time.

Indian Coal Mine in Australia gets opposed by Australian People . Barnaby Joyce's 'duck pond' claim under fire as Adani coal row deepens . Here's what we know about Adani and the Carmichael mine project . Barnaby Joyce has been called "irresponsible" by one of Australia's most senior conservationists after the Deputy Prime Minister dismissed wetlands adjoining Adani's Abbot Point coal port as little more than a "duck-shooting pond". The brawl over Adani's threats to the onshore environment and the Great Barrier Reef escalated as Liberal backbencher Sarah Henderson broke ranks to question a potential $1 billion government loan to develop rail infrastructure for the Indian conglomerate's proposed Carmichael mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin. Australian Conservation Council president Geoff Cousins said Mr Joyce had "failed to check his facts" on the Caley Valley wetlands, a 5000-hectare bird habitat that environmentalists say was damaged by coal dust contamination from the Adani terminal during cyclone Debbie. Mr Joyce this week played down the wetlands' ecological value, describing it as a "swamp" built for duck shooters. With approval granted for a permanent rail line and a temporary construction camp, Adani's much-touted and often doubted Carmichael coal mine has taken a large step closer to becoming a reality. So who and what is Adani? A multinational company based in Ahmedabad, India, Adani Group builds and operates mines, ports and power plants. The company has operations in coal, gas and renewable energy across India, Indonesia and Australia. Adani Mining chief executive Jeyakumar Janakaraj has faced scrutiny for failing to disclose that a company he ran in Africa was guilty of serious environmental breaches, despite being asked to do so in a letter from the Federal Environment Department. But Queensland Mines Minister Anthony Lynham has expressed confidence Adani will operate its Australian mine safely and that the Great Barrier Reef will be protected, with "200 stringent conditions placed on this project". How big is the mine project? Adani's $22 billion Carmichael mine will be built in the Galilee Basin, west of Rockhampton. Once complete, it will be Australia's largest coal mine, with six open-cut pits and up to five underground mines. The Queensland Government estimated the life span of the mine to be between 25 and 60 years. The newly approved 31.5 kilometres of permanent rail line will form part of a 389-kilometre heavy haul line from the mine in the Galilee Basin to the Abbot Point port, south of Townsville. Where will the coal go? The mine will supply Indian power plants with enough coal to generate electricity for up to 100 million people. Coal from the mine will be processed through the Abbot Point Coal Terminal, off the coast of Bowen in north Queensland. How many jobs will it generate? Adani has claimed the mine and related operations will generate 10,000 jobs, however the Land Court of Queensland rejected this. The court instead accepted the evidence of Adani's own expert witness, Dr Jerome Fahrer of ACIL Allen, who said that in net terms the Adani mine would increase average employment by about 1,200 jobs in north Queensland, and create 1,464 jobs Australia-wide. Who has challenged the mine legally and why? Environmental groups have listed multiple concerns about the mine's impact on the Great Barrier Reef and the expansion of Australia's coal sector. Over the past six years, Adani said there had been more than 10 appeals and judicial processes. Here are some of the highest profile Federal Court cases: What's the projected benefit to the economy? Planning Australia's biggest mine Step through the key events in the planning of Australia's biggest mining project, the Carmichael coal mine in remote central Queensland. Adani estimates the project will generate at least $16.5 billion for the Australian economy, but the final figure is dependent on the mine's lifespan. The State Government said it expected to receive many millions of dollars in mining royalties, which would be spent on upgrades for schools, hospitals and roads. "Resources are extremely important for everyone in Queensland," Mines Minister Anthony Lynham said. When will construction start? Earlier this year, the Queensland Government gave the project critical status to fast-track environmental and other approvals. The Government still has to approve a water licence and minor applications for power and road access before construction can start. Adani has said it hopes work on the mine will start in the first half of 2017. Thanks for watching. Subscribe to our channel. Thanks for watching. GVK Hancock's Galilee Basin projects include the Alpha, Alpha West and Kevin's Corner coal projects, and incorporate associated infrastructure including a rail solution connecting the Galilee Basin to a new coal terminal (T3) at the existing Abbot Point Coal Port. Our projects will provide direct employment to around 7,500 people during construction and almost 4,000 once operational and contribute over $40 billion in taxes and royalties over the life of the mines. When combined, our Galilee Basin projects will create one of the largest coal mining operations in the world holding total resources of 8 billion tonnes of high quality thermal coal and will achieve a peak capacity of around 80 million tonnes per annum for around 30 years.

Adani Rail A Benefit To Other Mines Govt The Turnbull Government says a $900 million concessional loan to build a rail link to the Adani Carmichael coal mine would also benefit five other mining projects in Central Queensland. Federal Resources and Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan said the rail corridor would unlock a 'job bonanza' and major economic gains in the Galilee Basin. Earlier in the week, Mr Canavan said Adani has assured the federal government the rail line can be open to multiple users. The Government predict the rail corridor will generate 15,000 direct jobs in the Galilee Basin. Liberal senator James Paterson told Sky News the jobs the rail construction would create 'was nothing to sneeze at' and the project would be 'warmly welcomed by locals'. Federal Labor says the case has still not been made for the concessional loan, Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh says the job estimates are higher than he had seen. 'The federal Labor's view on the Adani mine is that it needs to stack up economically and environmentally,' he told Sky News. http://www.skynews.com.au/news/politics/federal/2017/04/17/adani-rail-a-benefit-to-other-mines--govt.html

Redpath was awarded a contract to remove the old and construct a new overhead gantry crane system in an underground workshop in Queensland, Australia. Through the risk management process and industry experience there were several significant risk areas Redpath identified with the construction of the gantry crane, foremost they included generic risks such as - - Working with suspended loads; - Slinging beams and columns which were all compounded by the confined spaces of an underground mine workshop environment. Redpath's solution? A hydraulically controlled beam manipulator - The Redigrip PSM (Precision Steel Manipulator). The Redigrip can - Lift I-Beams up to SWL 1.2 Tonnes - Achieve 360 Degree rotation - 40 Degree side tilt left and right - 140mm side shift - 180 degree primary tilt - 600mm of telescopic extension - And can reach over 8 metres The Redigrip was a finalist in both the Queensland Mining Industry Health & Safety Innovation Awards 2012 and for the National Safety Council of Australia's Safety Awards of Excellence 2012 for Best Solution of an OHS Workplace Risk (medium to large businesses).
