UK and Minova Partner on New Concrete for Damaged Structures
The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research and Minova North America developed a new fast-drying, ultra-quick setting concrete product. Trademarked as Tekcrete Fast and Tekcrete Fast M, the product will be used by the mining industry and civil engineers to immediately stabilize damaged infrastructure. The research and joint patent leading to the Minova license began in 2009 when CAER partnered with Minova on a project for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science & Technology Directorate. This ongoing project for stabilization of shock-damaged structures is managed by the National Institute for Hometown Security in Somerset, Ky. Produced by Research Communications at the University of Kentucky.
Jack Vettriano
Jack Vettriano OBE born Jack Hoggan (born 17 November 1951), is a Scottish painter. Jack Vettriano grew up in the industrial seaside town of Methil, Fife. He left school at 16 and later became an apprentice mining engineer. Vettriano only took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s, when a schoolteacher friend bought him a set of watercolours for his 21st birthday. His earliest paintings, under the name "Jack Hoggan", were copies or pastiches of impressionist paintings his first painting was a copy of Monet's Poppy Fields. Much of his influence came from studying paintings at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in neighbouring Kirkcaldy. In 1984, Vettriano first submitted his work to the shell-sponsored art exhibition in the museum. Vettriano's breakthrough year was 1988, when he felt ready to display his paintings in public and submitted two canvases for the Royal Scottish Academy annual show. Both paintings sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries who wanted to sell his other work. The success and attention contributed to the breakdown of his first marriage and he moved to Edinburgh, changing his name to Vettriano, adding an "a" to his mother's maiden name. Further successful exhibitions followed in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, and New York. His paintings are reminiscent of the film noir genre, often with romantic or nude themes. His original paintings now regularly fetch six figure prices, but he is thought to make more money from the sale of reproductions. According to The Guardian, he earns £500,000 a year in print royalties. Each year a new set of limited edition prints are published, and his most popular work, The Singing Butler, sells more posters and postcards than any other artist in the UK. On 21 April 2004 the original canvas of The Singing Butler sold at auction for £744,500 — in stark contrast to 1992 when Vettriano painted the picture and submitted it for inclusion in the Royal Academy summer show, only to be rejected. In November 1999, Vettrianos work was shown for the first time in New York, when twenty paintings were displayed at The International 20th Century Arts Fair at The Armory. A series of paintings by Vettriano were sold for a total of more than £1m on 30 August 2007. The most expensive being Bluebird at Bonneville, bought for £468,000 at a Sotheby's auction held at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire. The painting had been part of a series commissioned by restaurateur Sir Terence Conran for the Bluebird Club. Vettriano has studios in Scotland and London. He was represented by the Portland Gallery, London from 1993 to 2007 and counts Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tim Rice and Robbie Coltrane amongst his collectors. To date, five books have been published about Jack Vettriano, the most recent of which is entitled 'Studio Life' and was published in March 2008. In 2008 Vettriano painted a portrait of Zara Phillips MBE (horse rider and granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II) as part of a charity fund-raising project for Sport Relief 2008. The painting is entitled 'Olympia' and it is to be auctioned later this year at a charity fund-raising auction along with works by Sir Peter Blake, Rankin, Gerald Scarfe and Stella Vine. All proceeds from the charity auction will go to will go to Sport Relief, an initiative of Comic Relief, a charity registered in England no. 326568. The portraits project was featured in a BBC programme Sport Portraits shown on March 10, 2008. In February 2009, Vettriano launched his own publishing company, Heartbreak Publishing, to publish and promote work by other artists and to distribute his own published works directly to his fans and collectors. DIY Smartphone Projector - How To Make Your Phone Image 15 Times Bigger (Tutorial)
Welcome to my blog: http://coloredtips.com/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/IdunnGoddess Follow me on G+ : https://plus.google.com/+Coloredtips1/ My easy tutorial of how to make smartphone projector allows you to increase your phone image up to 15 times more! It means that you can get an image about 60 inch! For this DIY Smartphone Projector (that will REALLY WORK!) you will need: 2 shoe boxes (2! not 1!), magnifying glass (I used cheap magnifying glass which diameter was 75 mm), electrical or black duct tape, scissors and knife, black paint, a pencil and a ruler, smartphone (or even PAPER PHOTOS!). First step is to connect 2 shoe boxes. Mine were 33 cm each. So I've got 66 cm projector. You can take 1 large box (60 cm), but it should be narrow. How to connect boxes - watch in my video tutorial. Next step - is to cut off a hole for magnifying glass. Next - to cover all holes in boxes to make the light pass through the magnifying glass ONLY! Then paint inside of your boxes black! I used watercolor, but you can use gouache, spray paint, just glue inside part of boxes with matte black paper - whatever! You'll need a smartphone holder, so I made one out of a plastic bottle bottom (watch in my video tutorial). Set the holder to the inside back part of the first box (that one which is without magnifying glass). Put your phone to the holder (screen should be turned to the magnifying glass). Important! Phone settings! Turn phone screen brightness to the maximum. Turn off screen rotation. Flip your phone upside down (so ppl in video or photo will be turned - their feet will be up, and their heads will be down). About focus and distance: tune the focus with moving your smartphone (with holder) backwards and forwards in the first box. Here are few tips about distance: 1. Distance from phone to magnifying glass - 60 cm, Distance from magnifying glass to the wall - 1 m, image size - ~8 inch 2. Distance from phone to magnifying glass - 50 cm, Distance from magnifying glass to the wall - 1.5 m, image size - ~15 inch 3. Distance from phone to magnifying glass - 40 cm, Distance from magnifying glass to the wall - 5 m, image size - ~60 inch So, turn off light in your room and start the movie! :) You can also project paper photos! Use a flashlight for this. Watch in my video tutorial how to set it right. Good luck!

The invention of colour
Philip Ball, Big Ideas in Science lecture, University of Bristol http://www.bristol.ac.uk/science/courses/undergraduate/ How did art get its colour? Today, the artist's palette is arguably taken for granted, with more than a rainbow of colours available to the painter. And yet were it not for chemistry and the inventions enabled by the evolution of industry and technology, many of the colours that we know today may not have emerged. In this lecture, one of a series hosted by the University of Bristol exploring some of the cornerstone ideas across the sciences, writer and Bristol Physics graduate Philip Ball talks about the intersection of art, science and creativity. He shows how in order to truly understand the history of art, one must appreciate the origins of the artist's palette and the process followed by such greats as Van Gogh and Picasso in creating their masterpieces.

Rubber Belt Blasting Mats For Mining & Civil Construction - Andromeda Industries
RUBBER BLASTING MATS WHAT ARE RUBBER BLASTING MATS? Massive rubber/canvas mats woven from disused conveyor belts, using various techniques to fix the weft and warps together. WHAT THEY DO: Blasting mats are designed to stop rock fly when using high explosives. The high density of the rubber provides mass to absorb the energy of flying rocks. WHY ADROMEDA BLASTING MATS ARE USED? Being made from disused materials with minimum embodied (recycling) energy, they provide good value and durability under normal conditions. DELIVERY AVAILABLE AUSTRALIA WIDE & INTERNATIONALLY For more information please contact - +612 6760 3773 (Australia) or visit our website www.rubberbeltmats.com.au. We Look Forward To Hearing From You! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BLASTING MAT TESTIMONIAL FROM: STONECO | QUARRIES SCONE NSW 2337 | 4th September 2012 Re: Andromeda Blasting Mats We have used Andromeda Blasting Mats in our civil and Quarry work and found them strong, durable and very effective. The weave pattern allows conforming to uneven ground while allowing the gasses to escape but retain the rock fly. They are easily lifted and placed into position with strong 13mm slings either end. The mats are a cheap form of insurance when you are blasting in built up or sensitive areas. I would recommend their use when blasting. Canvas Dangerous Substances and Explosive Risk Assessment Mobile App
http://www.gocanvas.com/mobile-forms-apps/8714-Dangerous-Substances-and-Explosive-Risk-Assessment The purpose of risk assessment is essentially to take cognizance of the hazards inherent in a work process, not the precautions already in place, and guide the decision-making process as to whether more needs to be done to assure continued safety. DSEAR makes no distinction as to the scale of the hazard, but many users of flammable liquids may use quite small quantities -- a few millilitres in a sample, say. Equally a large flammable liquid store may contain hundreds of litres. Risk assessment under DSEAR has to take a specific form: this is specified in the Regulations themselves. Please use the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Risk Assessment mobile app to complete your risk assessment.

Tobias Carlisle: "Deep Value Investing" | Talks at Google
"Deep Value: Why Activist Investors and Other Contrarians Battle for Control of Losing Corporations" is an exploration of the philosophy of deep value investment. It describes the evolution of the various theories of intrinsic value and activist investment from Benjamin Graham to Warren Buffett to Carl Icahn and beyond. Filled with engaging anecdotes, penetrating statistical analysis and meticulous research, the book illustrates the principles and strategies of deep value investing and examines the counterintuitive idea behind its extraordinary performance. About the Book It is a simple, but counterintuitive idea: Under the right conditions, losing stocks—those in crisis, with apparently failing businesses, and uncertain futures—offer unusually favorable investment prospects. This is a philosophy that runs counter to the received wisdom of the market. Many investors believe that a good business and a good investment are the same thing. Many value investors, inspired by Warren Buffett’s example, believe that a good, undervalued business is the best investment. The research offers a contradictory view. Deep Value is an investigation of the evidence, and the conditions under which those losing stocks become asymmetric opportunities, with limited downside, and enormous upside. In pursuit of this idea, it canvases the academic and industry research into theories of intrinsic value, management’s influence on that value, and the impact of attempts to unseat management on both market price and value. The value investment philosophy as first described by Benjamin Graham identified targets by their discount to liquidation value. That approach has proven extremely effective; however, those opportunities have all but disappeared from the modern stock market. To succeed, today’s deep value investors have adapted Graham’s philosophy, embracing its spirit while pushing beyond its confines. In Deep Value, I examine Graham’s 80-year-old intellectual legacy using modern statistical techniques to offer a penetrating and highly original perspective: That losing stocks offer unusually favorable investment prospects. The evidence reveals an axiomatic truth about investing: Investors aren’t rewarded for picking winners; they’re rewarded for uncovering mis-pricing.

Volvo Tests Kangaroo Avoidance System in Australia
The Swedish firm says the system detects movements through a radar in the car's grille and through a light-sensitive, high-res camera on its windscreen which scan the road ahead. According to figures from car insurers, kangaroos are involved in most animal-car collisions in Australia. Volvo says the new technology could help to avoid thousands of accidents a year and help cut insurance premiums. "In Sweden we have done research involving larger, slower moving animals like elk, reindeer and cows, which are a serious threat on our roads," said Volvo Cars safety engineer Martin Magnusson. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/34666050/car-firm-volvo-tests-kangaroo-avoidance-system-in-australia http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Postables using http://wochit.com

Construction Insurance: How Contractors Find Jobs
Construction Insurance: How Contractors Find Construction Jobs Here's a quick how-to for contractors looking for jobs within construction. In recent months, the construction industry has been booming, making it more important than ever for construction firm managers and owners to find good, qualified contractors. Knowing what those potential employees are looking for in a job or construction company could help you acquire those candidates more easily. As you know, there are many different types of jobs in the construction industry, ranging from installation, transportation, construction trade skills, and office or managerial positions. For contractors new to the construction industry, the main way to find construction jobs is by searching for companies or employers that are offering on-the-job apprenticeships or entry level positions. They also tend to look for job descriptions using keywords such as "construction labor" or "general labor". If contractors do have experience, and they have special certifications or trade skill training, they tend to use those skills as a starting point. They search for jobs using keywords that relate to their skill set, such as "plumber", "electrician", "carpenter", etc. It's important to know also where and how these potential candidates do their research. They want to know everything they can about their potential employer and the position before they apply for the opportunity. They'll typically look at your website and social media sites if you have them, and will probably talk to current and former employees. Another important part of searching for a job in the construction field is professional networking. Contractors utilize this network to find "insiders" within the employer they want to work for who can help them identify the hiring authority, learn about the employer and the position. Typically, contractors will continue to pursue the people that they network with, so it's a good idea to get representatives out there talking about your firm and bringing awareness to the current or future jobs you may be offering. Are you looking for construction insurance? Give us a call! (877) 602-2305 Source: http://srfm.com/specialty-industries/construction/

"Making A Mark - November 4, 2016 Session 1"
4:00pm - Welcome and Introduction to conference (John Bodel and Stephen Houston) Session 1: Marking Meaning (John Bodel presiding) 4:30pm - “Making the First Marks: Early Homo sapiens and the Development of Graphic Mark-making during the Late Pleistocene Period”,Genevieve von Petzinger (University of Victoria, British Columbia) 5:15pm - “Explaining the Curious Ubiquity of Graphic Numeration”, Stephen Chrisomalis (Wayne State University, Detroit) Humans have an urge, even a compulsion, to mark meaning through visible graphs. These signs range from coats of arms to emojis, potter’s marks to gang signs, and Paleolithic graphs to ISOTYPE or other cross-linguistic vehicles for communicating ideas. All can project meaning directly, without necessary recourse to language. For all their importance, however, there is little of a comparative nature to probe their use, meaning, makers, setting, and variance, or what they share as an expressive potential of all humans. In this conference, specialists in diverse scriptural and semiological systems explore semasiography, the phenomenon of non-linguistic forms of graphic communication organized into patterned, often codified ways. Talks address the techniques and systems employed in such mark-making, the media and modes of representation, and the uses and limitations of symbols and graphemes. The overall objective is to underscore the vitality of such visible signs at all times and periods, and to delight in their wondrous variety. November 4, 2016 Brown University
