Jack Vettriano

05:38
Jack Vettriano OBE born Jack Hoggan (born 17 November 1951), is a Scottish painter. Jack Vettriano grew up in the industrial seaside town of Methil, Fife. He left school at 16 and later became an apprentice mining engineer. Vettriano only took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s, when a schoolteacher friend bought him a set of watercolours for his 21st birthday. His earliest paintings, under the name "Jack Hoggan", were copies or pastiches of impressionist paintings his first painting was a copy of Monet's Poppy Fields. Much of his influence came from studying paintings at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in neighbouring Kirkcaldy. In 1984, Vettriano first submitted his work to the shell-sponsored art exhibition in the museum. Vettriano's breakthrough year was 1988, when he felt ready to display his paintings in public and submitted two canvases for the Royal Scottish Academy annual show. Both paintings sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries who wanted to sell his other work. The success and attention contributed to the breakdown of his first marriage and he moved to Edinburgh, changing his name to Vettriano, adding an "a" to his mother's maiden name. Further successful exhibitions followed in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, and New York. His paintings are reminiscent of the film noir genre, often with romantic or nude themes. His original paintings now regularly fetch six figure prices, but he is thought to make more money from the sale of reproductions. According to The Guardian, he earns £500,000 a year in print royalties. Each year a new set of limited edition prints are published, and his most popular work, The Singing Butler, sells more posters and postcards than any other artist in the UK. On 21 April 2004 the original canvas of The Singing Butler sold at auction for £744,500 — in stark contrast to 1992 when Vettriano painted the picture and submitted it for inclusion in the Royal Academy summer show, only to be rejected. In November 1999, Vettrianos work was shown for the first time in New York, when twenty paintings were displayed at The International 20th Century Arts Fair at The Armory. A series of paintings by Vettriano were sold for a total of more than £1m on 30 August 2007. The most expensive being Bluebird at Bonneville, bought for £468,000 at a Sotheby's auction held at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire. The painting had been part of a series commissioned by restaurateur Sir Terence Conran for the Bluebird Club. Vettriano has studios in Scotland and London. He was represented by the Portland Gallery, London from 1993 to 2007 and counts Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tim Rice and Robbie Coltrane amongst his collectors. To date, five books have been published about Jack Vettriano, the most recent of which is entitled 'Studio Life' and was published in March 2008. In 2008 Vettriano painted a portrait of Zara Phillips MBE (horse rider and granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II) as part of a charity fund-raising project for Sport Relief 2008. The painting is entitled 'Olympia' and it is to be auctioned later this year at a charity fund-raising auction along with works by Sir Peter Blake, Rankin, Gerald Scarfe and Stella Vine. All proceeds from the charity auction will go to will go to Sport Relief, an initiative of Comic Relief, a charity registered in England no. 326568. The portraits project was featured in a BBC programme Sport Portraits shown on March 10, 2008. In February 2009, Vettriano launched his own publishing company, Heartbreak Publishing, to publish and promote work by other artists and to distribute his own published works directly to his fans and collectors. 23. England, Britain, and the World: Economic Development, 1660-1720

46:36
Early Modern England: Politics, Religion, and Society under the Tudors and Stuarts (HIST 251) Professor Wrightson discusses the remarkable growth of the British economy in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He examines the changed context of stable population and prices; regional agricultural specialization; urbanization; the expansion of overseas trade both with traditional European trading partners and with the Americas and the East; the growth of manufacturing industries which served both domestic and overseas markets, and the intensification of internal trade. He describes and explains the emergence of an increasingly closely articulated national market economy, closely linked to a nascent world economy in which Britain now played a core role. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Tobias Carlisle: "Deep Value Investing" | Talks at Google

01:00:47
"Deep Value: Why Activist Investors and Other Contrarians Battle for Control of Losing Corporations" is an exploration of the philosophy of deep value investment. It describes the evolution of the various theories of intrinsic value and activist investment from Benjamin Graham to Warren Buffett to Carl Icahn and beyond. Filled with engaging anecdotes, penetrating statistical analysis and meticulous research, the book illustrates the principles and strategies of deep value investing and examines the counterintuitive idea behind its extraordinary performance. About the Book It is a simple, but counterintuitive idea: Under the right conditions, losing stocks—those in crisis, with apparently failing businesses, and uncertain futures—offer unusually favorable investment prospects. This is a philosophy that runs counter to the received wisdom of the market. Many investors believe that a good business and a good investment are the same thing. Many value investors, inspired by Warren Buffett’s example, believe that a good, undervalued business is the best investment. The research offers a contradictory view. Deep Value is an investigation of the evidence, and the conditions under which those losing stocks become asymmetric opportunities, with limited downside, and enormous upside. In pursuit of this idea, it canvases the academic and industry research into theories of intrinsic value, management’s influence on that value, and the impact of attempts to unseat management on both market price and value. The value investment philosophy as first described by Benjamin Graham identified targets by their discount to liquidation value. That approach has proven extremely effective; however, those opportunities have all but disappeared from the modern stock market. To succeed, today’s deep value investors have adapted Graham’s philosophy, embracing its spirit while pushing beyond its confines. In Deep Value, I examine Graham’s 80-year-old intellectual legacy using modern statistical techniques to offer a penetrating and highly original perspective: That losing stocks offer unusually favorable investment prospects. The evidence reveals an axiomatic truth about investing: Investors aren’t rewarded for picking winners; they’re rewarded for uncovering mis-pricing.

Canvas Dangerous Substances and Explosive Risk Assessment Mobile App

01:15
http://www.gocanvas.com/mobile-forms-apps/8714-Dangerous-Substances-and-Explosive-Risk-Assessment The purpose of risk assessment is essentially to take cognizance of the hazards inherent in a work process, not the precautions already in place, and guide the decision-making process as to whether more needs to be done to assure continued safety. DSEAR makes no distinction as to the scale of the hazard, but many users of flammable liquids may use quite small quantities -- a few millilitres in a sample, say. Equally a large flammable liquid store may contain hundreds of litres. Risk assessment under DSEAR has to take a specific form: this is specified in the Regulations themselves. Please use the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Risk Assessment mobile app to complete your risk assessment.

BEAUTIFUL THINKING : THE NET-WORKS’ STORY / Jon Khoo - Interface

22:28
UK & Europe's leading business conference for senior FM Executives For information on attending our next conference go to www.FM-inspired.com or email [email protected] Speaker : Jon Khoo, Co-Innovation Partner Subject : Beautiful Thinking - the Net-Works Story Synopsis : #BeautifulThinking is providing financial opportunities for poorer communities whilst cleaning up our oceans and beaches. At first glance, the partners behind Net-Works® may not seem like an obvious union. But beautiful thinking rarely appears obvious at first. Net-Works is a collaborative initiative formed by Interface and conservation charity, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). The innovative partnership was borne out of a shared ambition to redesign a supply chain to benefit communities and the natural environment. The challenge? It is estimated that 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear is abandoned in the world’s oceans every year – with destructive consequences. Discarded nets can be highly damaging to costal ecosystems and marine life. However, with every challenge there is opportunity. In this case, many waste nets are made from a nylon which can be recycled for use in carpet tiles. And so, by working in close collaboration, Interface and ZSL developed an inclusive business solution which protects delicate marine ecosystems while also offering financial and environmental benefits to some of the poorest communities in the world. Net-Works enables local fishing communities in developing countries to sell their waste nets back into a global supply chain – offering them new socio-economic opportunities while also creating a long-term incentive to protect their natural environment. In turn, the nets are regenerated into a nylon yarn, which provides a continuous source of fully recycled materials for use in carpet tiles.

Gain expert advice on BigQuery to take advantage of data warehousing. In this session, GOJEK, a global company with multiple products and services and lots of data, will share how they have designed their data model to have BigQuery and Google Cloud Storage for their data lake and data warehouse, how they've set up their infrastructure using GCP, and how they've built internal tools as part of this process. GOJEK will also share how they govern their data warehouse to support their business, accelerate their decision making process, and gain intelligence about their products. You will also get an in-depth walk through on how to work with semi-structured data, including how to ingest JSON array data types inside of BigQuery. But while denormalizing your schema into a single table with nested and repeated fields can yield performance improvements, the SQL syntax for working with array data can be tricky. Tunnel Tour (24.9.2013)

02:50
The Great Trek Uncut In the early planning stages of Freedom Park Robin Binckes participated as a member of the history subcommittee. The amount of debate and argument, much of it heated, astounded him. Practically every event discussed was interpreted from diametrically differing viewpoints. One of the most controversial topics was the Great Trek, the 1836 Boer exodus from the Cape Colony. Traditionally writers on the subject have covered the event from a perspective not only of 'white history' but predominantly of 'Afrikaner history'. It has always been seen as 'an Afrikaner event'. It was anything but. As the Great Trek and the events leading up to it involved every section of the population-Zulu, Sotho, Ndebele, Xhosa, Khoisan, Khoikhoi, Colored, British, English-speaking South African and Boer-it is time to portray the trek in that light, in the context of a unbiased, modern South Africa. Like most history the dots are all connected; it is impossible to separate the Great Trek from events which took place as far back as the Portuguese explorers because those early events shaped the backdrop to the causes of the Great Trek. Most writers have specialized in the trek itself whereas Binckes has adopted a broader approach that studies the impact of the earlier white incursions and migrations-Portuguese, Dutch, French and British-on southern Africa, to create a better understanding of the trek and its causes. Drawing heavily on eyewitness accounts wherever possible, he has consolidated these with the perspectives of leading historians, the final product being an objective and comprehensive record of one of the seminal events in South African history. This book shows that the Afrikaner was, is, and always will be, an important player in South African society, but it shows him as part of a bigger picture. The author distances himself from the noble characters stereotyped for the past two centuries and portrays them in their true light: wonderful, courageous people with human feelings, strengths and failings. About Robin Binckes Robin Binckes was born in East Griqualand, South Africa in April 1941. After matriculating in Umtata, Transkei, he did his national service at the South African Navy Gymnasium, Saldanha Bay. In 1970 he opened his own PR company to promote major sporting events ranging from international cricket to Formula One Grand Prix during the period of sports isolation. In 1990 he started The Gansbaai Fishing Company and spent ten years in the food industry. During the violence that swept South Africa in 1993 he volunteered as a peace monitor in the townships. Sparked by the passion of the late historical orator David Rattray, he qualified in 2002 as a historical tour guide, conducting tours in the Johannesburg-Pretoria region through his company 'Spear of the Nation'. His first book, Canvas under the Sky, a best-selling novel on the Great Trek, was published in 2011 and continues to fuel lively debate.

Mobile text analysis with Textal

02:17
Researchers from the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) and the University College London have developed a text analysis iPhone app called Textal. The term text analytics describes a set of linguistic, statistical, and machine learning techniques that model and structure the information content of textual sources for business intelligence, exploratory data analysis, research, or investigation. Textal app allows you to create wordclouds from your favourite text, website, tweet stream, or document. Textal then allows you to interact with the wordcloud, to drill down further and explore the statistics and the relationships between words in the text. Textal project is part of the NCRM and UCL Digital Humanities programmes, and you can find more info in http://www.textal.org/ Filming and editing by João Retorta. Music by Sérgio Faria. Tech Chats: EY’s Daniel Lyons on how tech is revolutionising modern transport

03:30
In this video interview, we speak with Daniel Lyons from EY about how technology is revolutionising modern transport. ES: Our topic of conversation for today is 'smart mobility', what exactly is 'smart mobility'? DL: So for us, we define smart mobility as the way to move more people or goods in a way that is faster, cleaner, more efficient and more economical than the existing modes of transport. It's about creating a frictionless, personalised, on-demand mode of transport. OK, so we're not just talking about driverless cars - there's much more to it than that? That's right, I think driverless cars get a lot of attention in the media and they grab all the headlines, but smart mobility is a much broader topic than self-driving cars. We actually think about three groups of activity within the smart mobility world – the first one is on-demand or autonomous journeys, which is really ride sharing, ride hailing, car sharing, car pooling – it does include robo-taxis as well as subscription-based services for car sharing or journeys. The second one is all around technology, whether it is hardware or software to support vehicles and so within that, that's where autonomous vehicle technology exists. Whether it's deep learning or artificial intelligence technology or some of the hardware like lidars or sensors and things like that. It's also connected cars and it's also electric vehicles, so fuel cell technology or lithium batteries or in-car entertainment. And the third group is integrated mobility solutions, and that would be planning solutions, booking solutions for multi-modal transport, it might be infrastructure and transport solutions, like smart parking or city planning, and data analytics. So in the overall smart mobility market, what kind of activity are we seeing at the moment? So smart mobility is an absolutely hot topic. I think it's fuelled by lots of mega deals and exits for early-stage entrepreneurs and tech startups that we're seeing almost weekly at the moment, especially as some of the large automotive companies are desperately trying to face up to some of the disruption that smart mobility is bringing. That's also created a lot of interest from the funding and venture capital side and we're seeing now dozens if not hundreds of accelerators and incubators focused almost exclusively on smart mobility, including several here in London and in other parts of the UK. It's a topic that's been embraced by consumers – we've seen take-up of some of the services really rocket, so yeah, it's an absolutely hot topic at the moment. OK, so lots of innovation taking place. What are we expecting to see in the short to medium term? So I think we're really only just getting started and some of the things are still being defined. I think we're in mobility 1.0, if you like, which is dominated by kind of ride sharing services. Mobility 2.0, which is just around the corner, will be about more integrated solutions, more sort of multi-modal transport options and we're starting to see some of that already. And then further down the line, we'll see mobility 3.0, which will be where we really take advantage of some of these new technologies, like self-driving vehicles, we'll have fully autonomous cars or blockchain-enabled technology like fractional car ownership. That’s all for this episode. To get more top tech news straight to your inbox, visit techcitynews.com/subscribe.

Financing Ideas: Reinventing Israel's Capital Markets

01:05:59
Introduction By: Yuval Steinitz, Minister of International Relations, Intelligence and Strategic Affairs, Israel Welcoming Remarks: Speakers: David Gershon, Chairman and CEO, Superderivatives Shmuel Hauser, Chairman, Israel Securities Authority Anath Levin, Head, Financial Markets Division, and Member, Board of Management, Bank Hapoalim Oded Sarig, Commissioner of Capital Markets, Insurance and Savings, Ministry of Finance, Israel Moderator: Roger Stein, Managing Director, Research and Academic Relations, Moody's Corporation; Research Affiliate, Massachusetts Institute of Technology How can Israel advance from startup nation to scale-up nation? Finance could hold the key. The creation and commercialization of disruptive technology is the Israeli economy's hallmark and a core contributor to its growth. However, tech companies face a shortage of both late-stage and public market funding and often find themselves prey to foreign multinationals. Consequently, Israel can claim only a minor position in the global technology value chain. How can Israeli capital markets become an active partner in the launch of new technologies? How can they provide local and foreign investors access to innovation without the companies being forced into premature IPOs or mergers? Our panel will discuss the elements of a new corporate and public finance model for Israel and consider what lessons can be adopted beyond its borders and what it can learn from abroad.
