Private security personnel employed by the world's largest gold mining company, Barrick Gold, have been implicated in alleged gang rapes and other violent abuses in Papua New Guinea. Barrick maintains a private security force of nearly 450 personnel at Porgera. The mine must cope with extraordinary security challenges, including violent raids by groups of illegal miners. But Human Rights Watch's research documents a pattern of opportunistic, violent abuses that are in no way a reaction to these threats. Every day, hundreds of people try to eke out a living by scouring the waste rock dumps around the mine for minute traces of gold. In contrast to the violent raids the mine confronts on a regular basis, these miners are for the most part engaged in an entirely nonviolent—albeit illegal—routine.

A small scale miner and local business man, Joe Tomerop [TOR-MER-ROP] says Papua New Guinea will have a bright future, if the Government sees the importance of Alluvial Mining. Tomerop who has been in the business for five years says small scale mining can rescue a Country’s economy and foreign exchange. However, he still needs a license to operate as a first time local investor in this sector. - visit us on http//www.emtv.com.pg for more news....

Twitter @juangangel The environmental impact of mining includes erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater, surface water by chemicals from mining processes. In some cases, additional forest logging is done in the vicinity of mines to increase the available room for the storage of the created debris and soil. Besides creating environmental damage, the contamination resulting from leakage of chemicals also affect the health of the local population. Mining companies in some countries are required to follow environmental and rehabilitation codes, ensuring the area mined is returned to close to its original state. Some mining methods may have significant environmental and public health effects. Nuss and Eckelman (2014) provide an overview of the life-cycle wide environmental impacts of metals production associated with 62 metals in year 2008. Erosion of exposed hillsides, mine dumps, tailings dams and resultant siltation of drainages, creeks and rivers can significantly impact the surrounding areas, a prime example being the giant Ok Tedi Mine in Papua New Guinea. In areas of wilderness mining may cause destruction and disturbance of ecosystems and habitats, and in areas of farming it may disturb or destroy productive grazing and croplands. In urbanised environments mining may produce noise pollution, dust pollution and visual pollution. The implantation of a mine is a major habitat modification, and smaller perturbations occurs on an larger scale than exploitation site, mine-waste residuals contamination of the environment for example. Adverse effects can be observed long after the end of the mine activity. Destruction or drastic modification of the original site and anthropogenic substances release can have majors impact on biodiversity in the area. Destruction of the habitat is the main component of biodiversity losses, but direct poisoning caused by mine extracted material, and indirect poisoning through food and water can also affects animals, vegetals and microorganisms. Habitat modification such as pH and temperature modification disturb communities in the area. Endemics species are especially sensitive, since they need really specific environmental conditions. Destruction or slight modification of their habitat put them at the risk of extinction. Habitats can be damaged when there is no enough terrestrial as well by non-chemicals products, such as large rocks from the mines that are discarded in the surrounding landscape with no concern for impacts on natural habitat. Concentration of heavy metals are known to decrease with distance from the mine, and effects on biodiveristy follow the same pattern. Impacts can vary a lot depending on mobility and bioavailability of the contaminant : less mobile molecules will stay inert in the environment while highly mobile molecules will easily move into another compartment or be taken up by organisms. For example, speciation of metals in sediments could modify their bioavailability, and thus their toxicity for aquatic organisms. Bioaccumulation plays an important role in polluted habitats : mining impacts on biodiversity should be, assuming that concentration levels are not high enough to directly kill exposed organisms, greater on the species on top of the food chain because of this phenomenon. Adverse mining effects on biodiversity depends on a great extend on the nature of the contaminant, the level of concentration at which it can be found in the environment, and on the nature of the ecosystem itself. Some species are really resistant to anthropogenic disturbances, while some other will completely disappear from the contaminated zone. Time alone does not seem to allow the habitat to recover completely from the contamination. Remediation takes time, and in most of the cases will not enable the recovery of the diversity present before the mining activity. On this episode we feature move to merchandise alluvial industry in Papua New Guinea. A recent alluvial mining convention and trade show facilitated by Mineral Resource Authority (MRA) brought together small scale miners throughout PNG as well as international investors to Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province. It was the third such trade show intended to introduce and educate alluvial mining communities to utilise machines and emerging technologies as opposed to the traditional methods of mining. All this aimed at allowing an increase in production for small-scale miners. It was during this event that MRA also revealed the value of alluvial gold exported between the years 2008 to 2015 – a whooping K365 million. - visit us at http://www.emtv.com.pg/ for the latest news...

Gold Mining in Shwegyin Township, Pegu Division During the dry season, villagers in Shwegyin Township in Karen State used to pan for gold in the rivers and streams to supplement their income. EarthRights International describes how this traditional, smallscale mining method is being replaced by industrial mining technologies, which in turn is destroying the natural environment. The case study also exposes the link between militarization in Shwegyin Township and the subsequent human rights abuses and rapid increase in resource exploitation. I figured this is a pretty efficient method, can probably get better rates with stamina potions. The ore from two hours was - http://i.imgur.com/0Pjibby.png and http://i.imgur.com/GPZ43wO.png (I didn't notice an hour had passed right away.) The profit was similar to mother lode mine, and the experience (in my case) was lower than mother lode mine. This also took about an hour to gather and assemble the 200 Volcanic Sulphur, 200 Saltpetre, 200 Empty Pot, 200 Ball of Wool, 200 Juniper Charcoal into unfinished, and finished dynamite. As of right now it seems pretty lackluster, but with tweaks it would be worth doing.

This video is about ALLUVIAL GOLD.I was amazed to see two ladies panning for gold in the brown river. They were happy to demonstrate. I was entertaining the idea that I'll see gold, but not really. But after a couple of swirls, just like that the pan had specks of shining gold. I looked around, and all I saw is a forest. The ladies with gold in their hands have nothing to show for it. Over the years they most'ave generate thousands of dollars.

Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN In the war-torn Central African Republic, former rebels who mounted a coup in 2013 are now dreaming of independence. FRANCE 24’s reporters James André and Anthony Fouchard went to meet one of the most powerful armed groups in the country, in the capital of their parallel state in the north. Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic has never truly experienced peace. In March 2013, a coalition of rebel groups called the Seleka seized power in country’s fifth coup d'état. Leaders on all sides exploited religious tensions for political ends and the country descended into violence. The Seleka, led by Michel Djotodia, was forced to give up power after nine months, completely unable to restore security. Under UN auspices, France deployed more than 2,000 soldiers to restore a fragile peace and avoid what it called a “genocide". But President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who was elected in March 2016, has still not managed to bring calm to a country devastated by civil war. On the contrary: violence actually resumed in the capital Bangui in April 2018. ►► On France24.com: Central African Republic's president Touadéra slams 'enemies of the peace' Since being routed, the rebels have been divided and fragmented, but have maintained their ability to cause trouble. The Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (known by its French acronym FPRC) is one of the most powerful armed groups. Abdoulaye Hissène, the FPRC’s military leader, is based in the northeastern town of Ndélé, but is massing his troops at the gates of Bangui. Towards a partition of the country? Although the prospect of a fresh coup seems unlikely, everyone is wondering about a possible partition of the country. The rebels prefer to talk about federalism and autonomy. Although they control all the main roads, provide security and even levy taxes, they do not want to create the impression of cutting ties with the central government, which does not consider the north a priority. The FPRC now wants to improve its image, severely tarnished after the violence of 2013. The rebels are literally sitting on a gold and diamond mine, the northeast being rich in natural resources. This is attracting Russian private security companies, officially invited by the central government to train army recruits. The climate is tense, but in the meantime, Abdoulaye Hissène knows very well that the weak army cannot dislodge him. "My men are in Bangui, they are just waiting for the political green light," he says. Whether he’s bluffing or not, guns speak louder than words and appear to be the main negotiating method in this region. http://www.france24.com/en/reporters Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

"All That Glitters Isn't Gold - A Story of Exploitation and Resistance" is an hour-long documentary that tells the stories of community members residing near Goldcorp's San Martin open-pit gold mine in Honduras' Siria Valley. The first mine to be developed under Honduras' controversial new mining law that was passed in the wake of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, the San Martin mine opened in 2000 and is the largest open-pit heap-leach mine in Honduras. As the mine nears its closure, community members discuss the grave complications they have experienced since the mine began operating -- from rampant health problems to a lack of water -- contesting the company's claims that the mine has been a model of healthy development for the community and has caused no adverse effects.

In the town of Sewell Chile, is the world's largest underground copper mine with over 3000 km of tunnel roads, it is enormous! In October of 2011 I took a tour to the mine to see the operation and have lunch inside at the cafeteria the miners use. It is active 24/7 and in 2006 produced 418,332 METRIC TONS of fine copper. This video shows a 500HP "bell" rock crusher passing the material down a chute to a waiting train below. The material then goes out of the mine on a lower level down a valley to the processing plant in Sewell.
