The Building of a Mineral Bank - First Mining Finance (March 2017)

03:31
www.firstminingfinance.com First Mining Finance Corp. is unlike any other mining companies in your stock portfolio. With almost 12 million ounces of gold in the ground between the measured, indicated and inferred categories, First Mining is a great pick to get exposure to gold. First Mining is a “Mineral Bank” that was founded by Mr. Keith Neumeyer (founder of First Majestic Silver Corp. and First Quantum Minerals Ltd.) to take advantage of the most recent bear market for mining equities by acquiring high quality mineral assets trading at exceptionally low valuations. First Mining’s management has decades of experience in evaluating, exploring and developing mineral assets. Since listing in April 2015, the company has completed eight transactions thereby increasing its NI 43-101 resources to a total of 7 million ounces of gold in the Measured and Indicated categories and 5 million ounces of gold in the Inferred category. First Mining has assembled a diverse portfolio of 25 quality projects located within mining friendly jurisdictions of eastern Canada, Mexico and the United States. The Company is moving forward to de-risk and unlock the value of its assets through drilling, metallurgical studies, infrastructure development and economic studies. When future market conditions are optimal, the Company will monetize its project portfolio by entering into agreements with third parties who can move the projects forward into production, with First Mining retaining residual interests in the projects. The residual interests may be in the form of joint ventures, earn-ins, equity positions, royalties, streaming structures or a combination of the above.

McEwen Mining CEO Rob McEwen tells TheStreet's Joe Deaux the company is holding back production for its second Mexico mine that just received permitting. McEwen says the gold mining company wants to wait on production there until there is a higher silver price. McEwen says the 12% increase in gold and silver reserves in its San Jose mine in Argentina is a result on more spending on exploration. World's Largest Zinc mines | How Zinc is mined | Where is Zinc mineral found?

03:13
Zinc is the fourth most mined metal in the world after iron, aluminum, and copper. It has strong anticorrosive properties and bonds well with other metals. Consequently, about one-half of the zinc that is produced is used in zinc galvanizing, which is the process of adding thin layers of zinc to iron or steel to prevent rusting. Large quantities of zinc are used to produce die-castings, which are important in the automobile, electrical and hardware industries. Antamina Zinc Mine, Peru: Antamina mine in the Andes Mountains of Peru is one of the largest copper/zinc mines in the world. It is operated by the consortium of leading mining companies, including BHP Billiton, Glencore and Teck, is the fifth biggest zinc producer. IMC GLOBAL POTASH MINE AND REFINERY AT CARLSBAD, NEW MEXICO 1950s MOVIE 87004

32:41
UP FROM THE BED OF A DESERT SEA tells the story of the New Mexico based potash mine run by the International Mineral and Chemical Corporation of Carlsbad (now known as IMC Global). Released in 1952 or 53, the film is a fascinating portrait of mining in the post-WWII era. Potash is any of various mined and manufactured salts that contain potassium in water-soluble form. The name derives from pot ash, which refers to plant ashes soaked in water in a pot, the primary means of manufacturing the product before the industrial era. The word potassium is derived from potash. In addition to its use as a fertilizer, potassium chloride is important in many industrialized economies, where it is used in aluminium recycling, by the chloralkali industry to produce potassium hydroxide, in metal electroplating, oil-well drilling fluid, snow and ice melting, steel heat-treating, in medicine as a treatment for hypokalemia, and water softening. Potassium hydroxide is used for industrial water treatment and is the precursor of potassium carbonate, several forms of potassium phosphate, many other potassic chemicals, and soap manufacturing. Potassium carbonate is used to produce animal feed supplements, cement, fire extinguishers, food products, photographic chemicals, and textiles. It is also used in brewing beer, pharmaceutical preparations, and as a catalyst for synthetic rubber manufacturing. These non-fertilizer uses have accounted for about 15% of annual potash consumption in the United States. Potash is produced worldwide at amounts exceeding 30 million tonnes per year, mostly for use in fertilizers. Various types of fertilizer-potash thus constitute the single largest global industrial use of the element potassium. Potassium was first derived by electrolysis of caustic potash (aka potassium hydroxide), in 1808. The International Minerals & Chemical Corporation was incorporated in June 1909 as International Agricultural Corporation. It initially owned a number of fertilizer manufacturing plants in Tennessee, all of the capital stock of the Kaliwerke Sollstedt Gewerkschaft Potash Mines in Germany, large deposits of phosphate rock in Tennessee, and all of the capital stock in the Prairie Pebble Phosphate Company in Florida. It added manufacturing plants in Alabama, Georgia, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee within the first few years. In April 1942 the company merged with United Potash & Chemical Corporation, a subsidiary engaged in the mining and refining of potash salt as well as the production of potassium chloride, potassium sulphate (both fertilizer ingredients), and magnesium chloride, the base for making magnesium metal. The period during World War II was good for International Minerals, as competing imports from Germany were suspended. The company continued to perform well in the postwar period. In 1947, reflecting record demand for fertilizer, International Minerals reported the best year ever with sales over $50 million, up from $41.3 million the year prior. To take advantage of the heavy demand, the company embarked on a $21 million program to expand production, including new plants such as one in San Jose, California, to make monosodium glutamate, a seasoning agent. The company continued to achieve new records for sales and earnings during the 1950s and 1960s. Sales were $93.6 million in 1954; ten years later, in 1964, sales were $225.7 million. International Minerals began acquiring other companies in the mid-1960s. In December 1966 it acquired the manufacturing assets of E.J. Lavino & Company, makers of refractories for the steel industry. In 1968 it added both Chemicals, Inc., of Bartow, Florida, and Continental Ore Corporation of New York. These acquisitions helped lift sales from $299.3 million in 1966 to $501.8 million only two years later. International Minerals & Chemical Corporation had become a leading producer of mineral and chemical products for industry and agriculture by 1975. It had operations in thirty-five states, as well as in Canada and fifteen other foreign countries. Mexican miners fight for survival

02:47
In the Mexican city of Cananea, miners who have been on strike for more than two years over unsafe working conditions, have been occupying a part of the country's largest copper mine, which is owned by the company Grupo. But last week, a court ruled that the strike is illegal and the miners could be fired and evicted from the mine after Grupo said the strikers damaged and stole company property, costing the firm more than $1.5bn. But the leader of the striking miners argues the place they occupied is just the company's "scrap metal department, which had already been closed down by the company itself". Some fear the court ruling could set a precedent and lead to the elimination of more and more labour unions in Mexico. [April 26, 2010]

Farquharson confirms coming cobalt deficit, outlines Formation's mine timeline

07:35
Formation Metals Inc. (TSX: FCO OTCQX: FMETF FWB: FOQ) is a Canadian mineral exploration and mine development company that through its wholly owned subsidiaries has interests in base and precious metals and uranium projects in Canada, United States and Mexico. The company's primary asset, located in the mining friendly state of Idaho, is the 100% owned, fully-permitted Idaho Cobalt Project which is comprised of the mine and mill near Salmon, Idaho, and the proposed Cobalt Production Facility for refining mine concentrate. The mine site is now prepared to commence underground development contingent on successful conclusion of mine financing. As InvestorIntel readers well know, the availability of cobalt for batteries is complicated by the looming shortage of the metal and the competing demand for it. While projections for 2018 show that battery chemicals will require 49% of cobalt output, the metal is also needed for superalloys, hard metals, ceramics and pigments, catalysts, tyres and paint dryers, electroplating, animal feed, synthetic diamonds and other battery technologies. May 5, 2016 – In a special InvestorIntel interview, Publisher Tracy Weslosky speaks with J.Paul Farquharson, President and CEO of Formation Metals Inc. In this interview, Paul outlines: ◾The advances made in metallurgical work ◾How Formation owns the only primary cobalt mine in the Western Hemisphere, and only one of two in the world ◾The timeline to production as a cobalt deficit looms Tracy Weslosky: Paul I rarely have a situation where all my editors and analysts all kind of crowd around me and say you have to follow this story. We have to write more about Formation Metals and you’re certainly an example of this. Last month for instance your stock was up +80% proving that, again, my analysts and editors know what they’re talking about. Can you tell me why your stock did as well as it did? Paul Farquharson: Well, I think Tracy, you know, there’s a lot of different factors there, but we have been, kind of, trying to get the word out lately about the company. We’ve just finished a lot of metallurgical test work. That work is done now so we can prove that we can make a product from our actual ore itself and the Prospectors and Developers Association it happened just a little while ago so we were really out talking about the company and making things happen. Tracy Weslosky: Well, of course, you had a corporate update. This corporate update — I’ve seen a lot of companies put out corporate updates that do not get as good of a response as yours did. You did earlier in March. Of course, the metallurgic studies that you were talking about, I was reading it included a final high purity cobalt salts results. Can you help me understand what this means? Paul Farquharson: Well, the metallurgical work is feasibility level metallurgical work and that’s where we’re heading toward, a feasibility study. What we did, we actually took our own ore from our project in Salmon, Idaho and we delivered it to Hazen Engineering in Denver and Hazen made a concentrate from our ore. Then once you have a concentrate it goes to Cytec. Cytec are the ones that provide us with the reagents. They hit it with the reagents and they make a pregnant leach solution, which once again is our ore. That solution then gets shipped to General Electric because they have the crystallizers and we made an ultrapure cobalt chemical, cobalt sulfate heptahydrate, which is used in the battery industry. It was proof that on a bench test level we could go from our ore to a final ultrapure product. That’s very huge for us and the company. To access this interview, click here. 11 Most Massive Mines in the World

10:20
From the worlds largest gold mine found on the top of a mountain to the largest diamond mine in the world here are the most massive mines in the world! Subscribe to American EYE! 5.. Asbestos Mine, Canada Also known as the Jeffrey Mine, it’s located in Asbestos, Quebec and it was in operation until 2012. It’s a whopping 2 kilometers wide and 370 meters deep! Check out this thing on google maps and you can tell how completely massive this thing is! It’s the by far the largest asbestos mine in the world. For a long period of time, people would use this mineral to put into their walls and keep their homes from catching on fire! But recently there’s been a link with asbestos and a disease called mesothelioma, which is a lung condition. This is a toxic substance that people should avoid, so obviously this large mine went out of business. The lake at the bottom might look like an inviting blue, but you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s highly toxic! The small town that grew with the thriving asbestos industry feels like they’ve kind of lost their identity once the mine was forced to close, but people do still live there. 4. Mcarthur River Uranium Mine In case you were wondering which mine produces the most uranium in the world, that would be of course the Mcarthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan Canada. This huge deposit was found in 1988 and finally a mining operation took place in 1997, when it began producing what’s known as Yellowcake. It’s not the kind of yellow cake you’d eat with your grandparents. This stuff has a horrific odor and basically what it is, is concentrated uranium powder which can then be used for powering nuclear reactors. We imagine this powdery substance is quite difficult to get ahold of. There aren’t a ton of photos of this place but, it does produce about 13 percent of the global uranium production across the globe. 3. Diavik Diamond Mine In case you thought it was Africa who had all the massive diamond mines, think again! The Diavik Diamond mine, found in the the northwest territories of Canada is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the Northern hemisphere and this place is pretty crazy! They annually produce 7 million carats of diamonds each year and you better believe it’s not easy to get here. The Diavik mine is found north of the arctic circle and it’s definitely cold! This photo here shows the subarctic landscapes that surround the diamond mine. You thought getting to work in the morning was tough for you? Imagine trying to get to work here! Just recently in 2015, this diamond produced what was known as the Diavik Foxfire 187.7 which is one of the largest rough gem quality diamonds ever produced. 2. Siberian Diamond Mine Also known as the Mirny Mine, The USSR began searching for ways to make to make themselves a more economical stable and independent union. In 1955 the Soviets discovered large diamond deposits at this site in the far away lands of Siberia and many people got to work very quickly in order to help bring wealth to the union. After about 20 years of operations, they finally decided that At one point this mine produced 10 million carats of diamonds a year and reaches a max depth of 524 meters or around 1700 feet making it the 2nd largest excavated hole in the world. The mine is so deep, airspace is closed over the hole due to helicopter crashes caused from the downward flow of air. The construction of this in the frigid conditions of Siberia must have been grueling and downright cruel. Sources state that the machinery used at this mine had to be covered at night or it would freeze Are the diamonds worth freezing to death?! It’s unoperational today but Some claim that there’s still a bunch of diamonds in this mine and the whole thing could be worth about 12 Billion dollars. It’s possible that controlling this diamond is mine is crucial to controlling the price of diamonds across the world. Bingham Copper Mine The bingham copper mine located near Salt Lake City Utah is home to the biggest pit in the world and it’s been in operation since 1903. It’s about 2.5 miles wide and if it were a stadium, it would be able to fit an estimated 9.5 million people. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too! Diligent workers can move about 250,000 tons of rock each day and it’s even become a tourist attraction in recent years before a massive landslide took place. Some claim that this was the biggest non volcanic landslide to take place in North American modern history. This photo we see here shows you the aftermath of this massive landslide and Bingham Copper mine and it makes you wonder how safe some of the conditions at these mines truly are. The landslides were so massive, that they actually triggered a few small earthquakes! Experts estimated that 165 tons of earth slide down from the top of the mine all the way to the bottom.
