The historic Rainbow Mine in Chloride Arizona
The Rainbow Mine is one of the largest historic mines in the Chloride AZ Mining District. It was primarily a gold, silver and lead mine, but they also pulled zinc, copper and molybdenum out of the ground here. First located and worked in 1883 and operated continuously until 1890, it has been reopened and worked intermittently close to a dozen times (1907, 1911, 1913, 1916, 1920, 1933, 1940, 1952 and 1971 (that we could confirm for sure). It was originally owned by the Rainbow Mining Company and today is private property. Workings include a 325 foot deep shaft on the Windsail ore-shoot that the area was famous for, and 4,000 feet of lateral workings on several different levels. Ore fro the mine averaged 2 oz. of gold and 20 oz. silver/ton plus 12% lead - which was good money on this days! We’re planning on searching the shaft and underground workings if we can get the owners permission - which of course means a split of anything and everything we find, a small price to pay to see the bottom of this mine where man likely hasn't ventured for more than a half-century!

Exploring the Moly Mine and Battling With Cactus Burrs
Recently I hiked up Palo Verde Wash in the Anza-Borrego Desert to explore and document the Moly Mine, a supposed gold mine, in the Santa Rosa Mountains. This abandoned mine was active from 1927 to 1932, and was owned and worked by Frank and Mollie Clark. There really aren't any records of how much gold the Clarks pulled out of the Moly Mine. Other sources say molybdenum was mined here. This is one of those frustrating cases where there just simply aren't any real records about this abandoned mine. You'll also get to see in the video my battle with a stubborn cactus needle that attacked me while inside the mine. CuMo Molybdenum Mine Idaho Field Trip 2009
In the Fall of 2009 a group of people involved in Idaho Families for Clean Water took a driving tour of the Upper Grimes Creek Watershed to look at the area which is proposed as potentially one of the biggest molybdenum mines in the U.S. Exploratory roads and drilling are already underway and even this could negatively impact water quality in the Boise River Watershed. Abandoned City. The Power Is Still ON. Adventure #26
This was one of the funnest adventures I have ever been on. The city of Kitsault was built in 1979 to house the workers and families of the near by Molybdenum mine. However in 1982 the price of molybdenum plummeted and the city was abandoned in 1983. It has then been bought and is preserved by a small team of caretaker but has mostly sat vacant from the day the last resident left. The city was built to house 1200 residents and offered restaurants, a pool, curling rink, movie theatre, bar, bank, mall, rec hall, school and all of the essentials for a community. I could spend days exploring this unique town but I was pretty limited in time due to the extensive trip just to get to this city. All in all it was an incredible adventure. The mines produced gold, which in this fault, is known to run with molybdenum, silver and platinum in the copper base that is common for the area. The mines, located near Jerome, Arizona were noted in 1923 as having a 900' shaft with 2000' of drift workings. The tailings from the mine had been meticulously separated into high and low grade piles.
The Black Warrior Mine Exploration
The Black Warrior Mine produced tungsten and molybdenum starting in 1942 through the 1950s. It's not a large mine, but there might be other underground workings farther up in the mountains. I explored the lowest, main tunnel, though. The timbering at the portal was in good condition, and I spent some time in the video showing how the miners cut and put together the timbers. Timbering has become a lost art form in the mining industry. I also found a couple scattered relics outside the tunnel as well. The first Geologic Map of Arizona was published in 1924 in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey. Old Adit Driven On A Massive Gold Quartz Vein
A big adit was driven on a massive 18 meter wide quartz vien. Containing gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, tungsten and molybdenum. Samples were taken from the walls and floor of the adit, shaft at the back will eventually be drained and explored. There is an estimated 130-150 feet of workings not including the shaft sunk. The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is pleased to announce that Harry M. (Red) Conger, President and Chief Operating Officer - Americas, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc., was inducted into the American Mining Hall of Fame on 1 December 2018 in Tucson, Arizona. Harry M. (Red) Conger is President and Chief Operating Officer - Americas, and is responsible for management of the company’s North and South America copper mining operations and Climax Molybdenum Co. This includes nine mining operations in North America, two in South America, and the associated downstream processing facilities. These operations employ more than 15,000 people and have annual copper production of 2.7 billion pounds and annual molybdenum production of 92 million pounds from mines operated by Freeport-McMoRan. He also has environmental and corporate social leadership responsibilities in North and South America. Mr. Conger began his career at the Kennecott copper mine at Bingham Canyon in Utah in 1977, which led to a 20-year career with Phelps Dodge Corporation overseeing all aspects of mining and processing at several North America operations and all South America operations. During that time, he progressed through a multitude of senior management roles of increasing responsibility before becoming president of Freeport-McMoRan Americas in 2007, following Freeport-McMoRan’s acquisition of Phelps Dodge that same year. He assumed the role of president and chief operating officer in July 2015. Throughout his career, Mr. Conger has been recognized for his leadership in safety and is considered a leader in change management and production efficiency. He recently served as chairman of the National Mining Association 2014-2015, where he has been a member of the Executive Committee since 2007. He also served as co-chairman of the initiative Creating Global Prosperity: The Campaign for Mining, launched by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. Mr. Conger was bestowed the honor of being named the 2018 Ankh Award Winner and Copper Man of the Year for his leadership in promoting improvements in workforce safety and building strong collaborative relationships with local communities. In 2017, Mr. Conger was the honored recipient of the Charles F. The Culverwell Mine -Delamar District, Lincoln County, Nevada
The Culverwell Mineral property is an established gold and silver mine located in Lincoln County, Nevada. The mine has limited documentation of production but shows average values of 1.44 oz/T AU and 2.31 oz/T AG. The mine was located by Mr. Charles Culverwell and Mr. William Culverwell in 1899. The mine was re-located by two miners in the resurgence of 1932 and documented production of 5 tons of ore containing 7.2 ounces of gold and 11.5 ounces of Silver. Waste Dumps at the mine were sampled and showed calcite, quartz, pyrites, raw gold, some silver and iron with likely tungsten and or molybdenum. The accessible workings in the mine consist of a haulage tunnel with some short offshoots and a stoped room where a gold ore body appears to have impacted a dike. There is a small headframe a winze of approximately 30’. At the bottom of this winze, there is an apparent drift cutting back on the same ore deposit as above. The lower level was not mapped or examined but it said to intersect with the workings of the upper two adits through a series of raises and other drifts. This information is unverified. In addition to the lower levels, also noted was a potential raise near the headframe, the passageway was extremely narrow and was likely an ore chute at one time, however, it is possible to attempt access to upper levels through this raise. The mine is noted for production of wire gold in iron and on quartz. Surveyors did not witness any wire gold, however, surveyors reported multiple instances of small gold deposition in the short offshoots of the haulage tunnel and some high-grade gold samples were removed from the main working room/stope. 28 lbs. of high-grade gold ores were sent for assay and returned a value of 22.9 oz/T in AU with only trace silver. This indicates that the gold deposits, when kept in a pure form have very little silver or other contaminates and could be crushed and washed as a way of processing with no chemicals needed. It also indicates that working specifically on the veins which are showing gold deposition within the mine would be the most lucrative plan for a small miner or mining company. Thanks to heavy investment from the United States they were able to make Bunkhouses, stores and a ten-mile-long railway. The mine operated for only three years until it was held up in litigation. Eventually, the mining company was able to move past the litigation and went on to build the Lions Gate Bridge. Which ushered in another era for this sleepy little valley. The town of Kitsault was established in 1979 as the home community to a molybdenum mine run by the Phelps Dodge Corporation of Chicago. The community was designed for over 1,200 residents and included a shopping mall, restaurant, swimming pool and bowling alley. In 1982, prices for molybdenum crashed and the entire community was evacuated after just 18 months of existence. In 2004, the ghost town was bought by Indian-American businessman Krishnan Suthanthiran for $5.7 million; he has spent $2 million maintaining the town. In the end, he would have spent over $20 million more to fully update the town. He has also since closed the town to the public. Krishnan had hoped to turn the town in to an intellectual utopia. In which you could only be invited to. In an effort to revitalize the ghost town, Kitsault has been proposed as a location for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal site. However; this offer has not yet been accepted. Please comment if you lived in Kitsault or have more information. Elder Whine Adds: “In 2005 Suthanthiran bought the whole town, 1,500 kilometers north of Vancouver, for less than $7 million. The Kitsault Project was a producer of molybdenum between 1967 and 1972 and again between 1981 and 1982. The area was ideal due to its "elevated levels of arsenic, molybdenum, cadmium, lead, and sulfur. This has turned UGLY after such a promising start! Looking back I should have moved the Stop Loss to the 2% mark to protect the profit, but in this case I wanted to see if the trade would pull back then head for new highs. I was wrong and in the future I will stick to my conservative profit protection discipline. A very negative day for US markets today!! (see more at /) 10/01/14 -- As the price action went above the half way point to the target zone at the end of December where an initial Wave 5 was just managed, I didnt time stop the trade and take a handsome 2% profit on my trading account value. The correction since then has been aggressive but seems as though it has bottomed out yesterday at the 0.618 Fib line taken from the Wave 4 Low and the Interim Wave 5 high. To give more confidence I drew a TJs Ellipse from the same points which calculated an initial resistance at the same point as yesterday (Yellow filled ellipse) and if that fails a secondary slightly lower on around the 17th Jan (just below the 0.618 Fib line). This is a true test of discipline to let this play out and next weeks price action is critical! Freeport-McMoRan Tops Q4 Estimates, Sets 2011 Mining Targets
Copper and Gold mining company Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE:FCX) reported Q4 EPS of $3.25, topping analyst estimates of $2.88. Revenue in the quarter rose to $5.60 billion, better than the Street estimate of $5.47 billion. The company expected consolidated sales from mines for 2011 to be 3.85 billion pounds of copper, 1.4 million ounces of gold and 70 million pounds of molybdenum. Q1 2011 is expected to deliver 840 million pounds of copper, 325 thousands ounces of gold and 17 million pounds of molybdenum. Freeport currently expects 2011 capex to total $2.5 billion. The company's board of directors declared a $1 per share supplemental dividend (paid on 12/30/10) and a 2 for 1 stock split (effected 2/1/11). Chairman Jim Moffett and President and CEO Richard Adkerson said, "We are pleased to report record quarterly and annual financial results and substantial reserve additions. We look forward to continued strong operating results across our global operations and to the advancement of our attractive development projects as we grow our production and enhance our asset values. Our strong financial position and positive outlook will enable us to invest in economically attractive growth projects while providing strong cash returns to shareholders."

Molybdenite under normal and polarized light The element rhenium is always present in molybdenite as a substitute for molybdenum, usually in the parts per million (ppm) range, but often up to 1–2%. High rhenium content results in a structural variety detectable by X-ray diffraction techniques. Molybdenite ores are essentially the only source for rhenium. The presence of the radioactive isotope rhenium-187 and its daughter isotope osmium-187 provides a useful geochronologic dating technique. Molybdenite is an important ore of molybdenum, and is the most common source of the metal. While molybdenum is rare in the Earth's crust, molybdenite is relatively common and easy to process, and accounts for much of the metal's economic viability. Molybdenite is purified by froth flotation, and then oxidized to form soluble molybdate. Reduction of ammonium molybdate yields pure molybdenum metal, which is used for fertilizer, as a catalyst, and in battery electrodes. By far the most common use of molybdenum is as an alloy with iron. Ferromolybdenum is an important component of high strength and corrosion-resistant steel. Multilayer molybdenite flakes are semiconductors with an indirect bandgap. In contrast, monolayer flakes have a direct gap. In the early years of the 20th century, molybdenite was used in some of the first crude semiconductor diodes, called cat's whisker detectors, which served as a demodulator in early crystal radios.
