In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/haiti-gold-mines-foreign-companies-investment-government-distribution-wealth-poverty After years of rumors that gold mining companies were exploring in Haiti, Canadian and U.S. gold mining corporations now confirm they have permits to mine gold in more than 1,000 square miles in northern Haiti. Haiti's new prime minister says the estimated $20 billion worth of minerals in Haiti's hills could help liberate it from dependency on foreign aid and rebuild from the devastating 2010 earthquake. But many worry the gold mines will be a boom for foreign investors and a bust for local Haitian communities. Democracy Now! speak to Jane Regan, lead author of "Gold Rush in Haiti: Who Will Get Rich?" The report by Haiti Grassroots Watch was published Wednesday in The Guardian and Haïti Liberté. "You've got a perfect storm brewing whereby you're looking at giant pit mines in the north, in a country that's already environmentally devastated, and giant pit mines being run by Canadian and American companies," Regan says. "Most of the money that's made and most of the gold that's dug up will go straight north." (Modified from the original excerpt provided by Democracy Now!) This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Haiti: Sitting on a Gold Mine" (http://bit.ly/LSCNtf).

(3 Jul 2017) LEADIN Illegal gold mining in Ivory Coast is still widespread in the country's north despite government efforts to control it. Local officials complain too many men and women are joining the continuing gold rush and leaving farms without enough labour. STORYLINE At an illegal mine in Tongon in the far north of Ivory Coast, around fifty kilometres from the border with Burkina Faso, miners have dug a 20 metre shaft into a layer of gold bearing rock. Rocks are hauled to the surface before being pounded into a powder. It's very a labour intensive and sometimes dangerous process. Illegal mining has been blamed for uncontrolled migration between countries in the region, unchecked pollution and for fuelling violence. Miners move around, following the latest gossip of where gold is to be found. Miner Hamed Ouedraogo has come from northern neighbour Burkina Faso: "Often when we are moving about we hear of new mines that have been started and that are people are going there, so we head there too." Although operating without permits, miners have machinery on hand to help them and receive a small salary from the illegal mine's owners, often businessmen working with the help of corrupt local officials. It is something authorities have been trying to stamp out as they encourage international investors into the sector. George Gueu Gombadji, the Prefect of Boundiali region says that it means that agriculture is also suffering as there are fewer men to work the land. "This (illegal gold mining) is causing a major loss off of the nation's riches. It has reached such a scale that the supply of agricultural labourers is drying up as they all go mining instead," he says. Illegal mining took off during the years prior to Ivory Coast's 2011 civil war, with rebels occupying much of the north. While the money doesn't flow into the state's coffers, run-off from the illegal mining pollutes water courses. Ouedraogo says the gold will be sold off wherever it can attract the highest prices: "In Burkina Faso the price is higher, a gramme (of gold) can go up to 30,000 West African francs (51 US dollars)." He says in Ivory Coast the going rate is 12,500 francs (21 US dollars) per gramme. Not far away are the offices of Randgold Resources, a NASDAQ and London stock exchange listed gold mining company. They operate legally, holding an official permit to mine in the area. They operate on an entirely different scale to the illegal miners - the Tongon mine, operated in partnership with the state, comprises two massive open cast mines. According to Randgold's own figures, last year they extracted 260,556 ounces of gold at this mine in Ivory Coast, that is over 7 metric tonnes, generating over 121 (m) million US dollars in profit. Bodiel N'diaye, the company's country director recently gathered journalists to explain why he is unhappy with the impact of the illegal mining. "These people come and set up in areas where they do not have the right to operate. Take our concessions for example, where we have a government licence (to mine). When we come to start working, we can't because these people are occupying the site illegally, they have no authorisation from the supervising ministry. They don't follow the laws," he says. Government efforts to crackdown on the illegal mining have done little to stop the practice. The illegal miners simply move on or across borders briefly before returning. #Osisko #Gold #Mining Osisko Gold Royalties: Growing Royalty Stream Business & Cashflowing Assets. Interview with Joseph de la Plante. Osisko Gold Royalties is an intermediate precious metals royalty company which receives royalties from other mining companies working in the precious metal space. Royalties (also called Net Smelter Returns or NSR) are payments of physical gold or silver that the company receives from a mining company at a certain percentage (mostly 1% to 5%) of their production. Royalties come usually for the lifetime of the mine and without paying an additional price for the metal delivered. These royalty payments are made as compensation for a previous one-time payment to the mining company usually for financing in the exploration or development phase. Osisko has a regional focus on North America and especially Canada. The company was founded in June 2014 as a spin-off from former Osisko Mining which had discovered & developed in record time Canada´s largest gold mine “Canadian Malartic”. At the spin-off the management-team together with the leading geologists and engineers transferred into the new company. Osisko Gold Royalties holds over 50 royalties like the 5% NSR royalty on the Canadian Malartic Mine (Quebec, Canada) and a 2.0-3.5% NSR royalty on the Éléonore Mine (Quebec, Canada). Osisko has a strong financial position with approx. 500 Mio. CAD in cash per December 31, 2016 and paid dividends to their shareholders for the last 9 quarters. Osisko differentiates itself from pure royalty companies as they additionally act as an incubator and accelerator for junior mining companies in the exploration and development phase. Osisko´s goal is to accelerate the development of the junior mining company by providing financing additionally via equity (maximum is a 20% holding) and expertise (in management, geology and engineering) in order to receive the agreed royalty payments faster. At the same time Osisko takes advantage of the increasing value of the equity holdings. Ein Film von Katja Becker und Jonathan Happ (2016) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem vom BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekt AFRASO –"Afrika's Asiatische Optionen" (http://www.afraso.org). Wissenschaftliches Konzept: Diderot Nguepjouo und Jürgen Runge Over the last decade, Cameroon’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector has gone through several mutations thanks to the new policy which has attracted various international investors from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. As from 2012 on, the involvement of Chinese entrepreneurs has dramatically accelerated the pace of progress in the sector. Some of them switched from other economic activities they were already pursuing in the country whilst the others, mostly mining professionals, moved from the Ghanaian gold mining business to Cameroon. Chinese entrepreneurs have gradually become main players in the gold mining operations, recording successes, while other actors, e.g. Koreans, went bankrupt and in many cases have sold their business capital to Chinese without any competition. Through taking over those projects coupled with their greenfield mining initiatives, Chinese investors has gained the image of successful businessmen in the sector. As a result, their working style and techniques are gradually being adopted by almost all local and foreign investors. This is the context that spurred AFRASO researcher Diderot NGUEPJOUO together with the filmmaking crew UJUZI travel to Cameroon and shoot the 3rd AFRASO documentary. The film follows several active players in the major segments of the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) in Cameroon: a Chinese investor; local entrepreneurs (member of Parliament, businessman, and middleman); workers, small operators in “Nguéré”, civil servants as well as the affected communities on their working sites. The film reveals that political elite and administrative authorities appear to favour the involvement of Chinese operators because they consider it beneficial to the State and local entrepreneurs (service providers, middlemen…), while traditional rulers and business people who did not partner with Chinese are less supportive of this presence. Furthermore, the positive impacts resulting from gold mining are reported to be enjoyed by Chinese investors and some local entrepreneurs while the communities are left with the impact of these activities such as land disturbance, water pollution, diseases... All in all, the movie tries to put forward the ongoing dynamics and contradictions that are taking place in the Cameroon's gold mining.

We follow the young men coming to South Africa and risking their lives in the abandoned gold mines of Durban Deep. The gold mine is an hour outside Johannesburg and was closed down 12 years ago, after commercial mining companies moved on. Now illegal miners descend half a kilometre underground, through make-shift tunnels, and use explosives to blow apart the rock in search of gold. There are dangers both inside and outside the mines, local gangs control the area, and rapes and murders are now commonplace.

The Homestake Mine was a deep underground gold mine located in Lead, South Dakota. Until it closed in 2002 it was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. The mine produced more than 40 million troy ounces (approximately 1.25 million kilograms) of gold during its lifetime. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * History of the Homestake Mine: The Homestake deposit was discovered by Fred and Moses Manuel, Alex Engh and Hank Harney in April 1876, during the Black Hills Gold Rush. A trio of mining entrepreneurs, George Hearst, Lloyd Tevis, and James Ben Ali Haggin, bought it from them for $70,000 the following year. George Hearst arrived at the mine in October 1877, and took active control of the property. Hearst had to haul in all the mining equipment by wagons from the nearest railhead in Sidney, Nebraska. Arthur De Wint Foote worked as an engineer. Despite the remote location, an 80-stamp mill began crushing Homestake ore in July 1878. The partners sold shares in the Homestake Mining Company, and listed it on the New York Stock Exchange in 1879. The Homestake would become one of the longest-listed stocks in the history of the NYSE (Con Edison's original name was New York Gas Light and was listed in 1824). Hearst consolidated and enlarged the Homestake property by fair and foul means. He bought out some adjacent claims, and secured others in the courts. By the time Hearst left the Black Hills in March 1879, he had added the claims of Giant, Golden Star, Netty, May Booth, Golden Star No. 2, Crown Point, Sunrise, and General Ellison to the original two claims of the Manuel Brothers, Golden Terra and Old Abe, totaling 30 acres. The ten-stamp mill had become 200, and 500 employees worked in the mine, mills, offices and shops. He owned the Boulder Ditch and water rights to Whitewood Creek, monopolizing the region. His railroad, Black Hills & Fort Pierre Railroad, gave him access to eastern Dakota territory. By 1900, the Homestake owned 300 claims, on 2000 acres, and was worked by more than 2000 employees. In 1901, the mine started using compressed air locomotives, replacing the mules and horses by the 1920s. Charles Washington Merrill introduced cyanidization to augment mercury-amalgamation for gold recovery. "Cyanide Charlie" finally achieved 94 per cent recovery. The gold was shipped to the Denver Mint. By 1906, the Ellison Shaft reached 1,550 feet, the B&M 1,250 feet, the Golden Star 1,100 feet, and the Golden Prospect 900 feet, producing 1,500,000 tons of ore. A disastrous fire struck on 25 March 1907, which took forty days to extinguish after the mine was flooded. Another disastrous fire struck in 1919. In 1927, company geologist Donald H. McLaughlin used a winze from the 2,000 level to demonstrate ore reached the 3,500 foot level. The Ross shaft was started in 1934, a second winze from the 3,500 foot level reached 4,100 feet, and a third winze from 4,100 feet was started in 1937. The Yates shaft was started in 1938. Production ceased from 1943 until 1945, due to Limitation Order L-208 from the Government. By 1975, mining operations has reached the 6,800 foot level, and two winzes were planned to 8,000 feet. See our full introductory course on investing in mining stocks: http://www.informedtrades.com/f434/ Here are the basic points covered in the video: 1. Economic geology is complex. This video is just to give you a taste, and to cover some of the key elements. Studying geology in depth and having a mastery of the subject is what can really help investors pick the big winners in this area. It's worth noting that many big investment firms that focus on single stock selection in the mining space employ geologists. 2. Be skeptical. Everyone says they have a great mine with the most valuable stuff in the world that can be extracted at very low prices. Most of them do not. When doing number crunching in valuing mines, conservative estimates can help. Accordingly, it's worth remembering that trying to pick explorers, while that's where the big money is, is a tough game. Most fail. Those that already have production established, earnings to prove it, and the possibility of issuing dividends are the much safer bet, especially for the casual investor/trader. 3. Check the NI 43-101. The NI 43-101 is a report issued by mining companies listed on Canadian exchanges (the vast majority of mining firms) that is an attempt at quantifying the amount of minerals the mining company has access to for their given mines. I recommend focusing on conservative numbers in the report, as it remains to be seen if the geologist who conducted the report got it correct and what the final price of extraction ends up being. 4. Cost Per Ounce. In investor presentations, many mining firms will state their cost per ounce. The simple formula for assessing the value of a mine is (market price per ounce of mineral - cost per ounce) * number of ounces When you have the NI 43-101 and the cost per ounce, you can do some number crunching to give you an idea of what the company's potential profit is. Then you can compare this with its market capitalization to get an idea of whether it is undervalued or not, as well as its earning potential based on how you think the mineral it mines will fare in the future. Related to cost per ounce is the quality of the ore in the mine. This is most simply observed by looking at what the grams per ton the company is reporting. Lower grams per ton means it will take moving around a lot of rocks to get the minerals, which means a higher cost of production. Conversely, higher grams per ton means cost of production are likely lower. These days, it is common to see 1 gram per ton or less with respect to gold, although there are of course exceptions that can yield much more. 5. History. Mines with minerals that are most easily extracted tend to form around fault lines. This is one of the reasons why the same geographic regions tend to continually yield worthwhile mines. In the United States, for instance, Nevada, Colorado, and California have historically been mineral-rich regions -- and so many companies today tend to focus on those regions as well. Canada, of course, has built much of its economy on mineral extraction. In addition to having favorable mines, these regions are also accustomed to dealing with the mining industry and are often inclined to view it as an economic boon and capable of dealing with the myriad of permitting and environmental issues mining brings. 6. Resources. Full Description and comments at: https://www.peakprosperity.com/podcast/108856/leanne-baker-investing-gold-silver-mining-companies For precious metals investors looking to increase their exposure to this asset class beyond owning bullion or gold and silver ETFs, mining companies are a natural consideration. Their prices usually move much more dramatically in response to smaller price moves in the underlying metals they mine. In a bull market, it's very possible for the share prices of these companies to increase by hundreds of percents within a year or two. But there are a lot of gold and silver mining companies out there, many of which are small operators. Risk abounds in this sector. And for the past half-decade, most of these companies have been absolute widow-makers for investors. How do we identify which companies are worth considering and which should be avoided? How (if at all) should the small investor go about gaining exposure to precious metals mining companies? To address this, Dr. Leanne Baker, former mining analyst at Solomon Smith Barney and current director of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd, joins the podcast this week. In this video, I endeavor to spare you, my dear viewers, from having to make the long drive to the middle of nowhere in Nevada (along with the associated costs for fuel and damage to your vehicle on the rough road in). In addition, you are able to avoid the relatively long, hot hike up to this abandoned mine. And, of course, you are also spared from needing to spend any time underground in this sketchy abandoned mine as well. Now don’t get me wrong, we (usually) enjoy this sort of thing, but most probably would not… The mineral potential of this area was first recognized in the mid-1800s and a town and mill sprang up around the areas in the canyon that looked most promising very shortly thereafter. However, no one appears to have gotten rich here and (as with countless mining towns) everything slowly faded away, interspersed with only brief flurries of activity when new discoveries or economic conditions temporarily brought miners out into the hills again. There are surprisingly few records available on this specific mine. Although it is mentioned that work took place here in the 1930s, the only years that we could find production data for were for two years in the 1940s. This was primarily a gold mine, but some silver was extracted here as well. The official production figures were not terribly inspiring, but it seems that contemporary mining companies still poke around this site from time to time – even in those small, fractured stopes underground as could be seen from the surveyor’s flags... Although samples have been taken, to my knowledge, no modern exploratory work has been conducted. My exploring buddy on this trip was Mines of the West: https://www.youtube.com/user/GramVideos95 ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring
