MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. So You Want to Work as a Drilling Rig Leasehand?

04:01
So you've heard it's good money and you want to work on the rigs. But what's it like? On a drilling rig, the entry-level positions is Leasehand. The Leasehand's main responsibility is keeping the rig clean and tidy. Like any rig crew member, the Leasehand must be a hard worker, focused on safety, and physically capable to work a long shift and do some heavy lifting. With time and experience, the Leasehand will transition into a Floorhand position and from there progress to become a Motorhand, then a Derrickhand, then a Driller. This video follows Garrett Zuchkan, Leasehand on Savanna rig 651, as he performs his daily tasks of scrubbing the rig, carrying chemical bags, moving and wrapping hose, cleaning up tools, taking out garbage. Garrett briefly describes the other positions on a drilling rig crew and talks about the benefits and challenges of working in the oil field. Mining Jobs TV Episode 2 - Mining Career Opportunities

MINING JOBS TV Episode 2: Mining Career Opportunities Welcome to the second episode of Mining Jobs TV. My name is Matt and I will be talking about career opportunities that are available in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. We understand that many people these days are looking at getting ahead financially and seeking career changes - for that reason mining is a great opportunity for many people, regardless of your skills and experience. You could be forgiven for thinking that mining is a fairly specialised profession and that to get a job in a mine, you need to have worked in one before. That may sometimes be the case, but as you'll soon discover, not always. The reality is that across the board, there are probably just as many jobs that DON'T require experience as those that do. Obviously, there are some positions that require certain levels of experience or qualifications that you may not possess. For example, you can't go from being a builder's labourer to a Principal Mine Geologist overnight. And it's highly unlikely that you'll be expected to progress from working in an accountant's office one day, to setting the explosives in an open cut coal mine the next. Keep in mind that the demand for people, both skilled and unskilled is huge, and opportunities exist across all levels. It is in every respect a jobseekers' market. You just need to know what you're looking for, and more importantly, how to look for it. In the last year, mining and resources jobs in Australia grew by an impressive 13% - a figure unmatched by any other job sector. By location, jobs have grown by 5% in Western Australia, 21% in Queensland and a whopping 42% in New South Wales. Simple mathematics will tell you that there are just not enough qualified or experienced people to fill those numbers. If you want to work in resources, it pays to be resourceful. A great way to start is by looking for jobs in mining that relate somehow to what you're doing now -- anything from cleaning to hospitality or admin people have all got skills the mining companies are looking for. The Seek.com.au website will actually help you do it. You start by selecting 'Mining, Resources & Energy' in the Classification box and then you can drill down from there, looking at current jobs that appear for your perusal. You will see that there are many skills and qualifications that are very transferrable from other industries to mining. Mines need engineers, plumbers, electricians, builders, boilermakers, welders, mechanics, IT personnel, HR people, medical staff, logistics experts, heavy vehicle drivers to name just a few. Australian mining companies employees people across a broad range of areas from unskilled labourers to mining engineers. There are also opportunities in administrative, human resources and management positions together with numerous trade related opportunities such as Trades Assistant, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Welders, Electricians and Plumbers. But what if you don't have any skills or experience that relate to the mining industry? Fear not - there are still loads of entry level mining for you to choose from and you'll find many of them on the SEEK website. You'll soon discover that mines need a whole host of people like drillers' offsiders, administrative assistants, cooks and catering staff, cleaners and maintenance staff, childcare workers and general labourers. And many of these positions require no experience whatsoever. All you need to bring is a sense of adventure, flexibility and a willingness to work. As you have probably heard, mining jobs are achievable yet very competitive. It is not unusual for HR Managers to receive 500 or 1000 plus resumes for an advertised vacancy ... so it's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. I enjoyed talking to you today about mining jobs and hope that you have found this episode helpful and I look forward to talking to you again in Episode 3 where I will provide an insight into unskilled and entry level mining jobs. If you aren't already signed up to receive the Mining Jobs episodes, fill out your name and email address in the box at the bottom right hand side of our website at miningjobs.tv or email us at [email protected] Thanks for watching and see you next time.

Coal mine accident: six die after gas leak in Spain

00:35
Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's animated news graphics at http://newsdirect.nma.com.tw/Reuters.aspx Six miners died while working in a coal mine in Spain on Monday due to a sudden gas leak. According to El Pais, the accident took place in northern Spain's Leon region in a gallery 694 metres below ground, where 11 miners were working. The tunnel measured four metres high and five metres wide. The leak of firedamp, a silent and odorless gas, happened around 1:30 p.m. when there were at least 150 workers inside the whole mine who started their morning shift at 7:45 a.m. and were supposed to finish work at 3:15 p.m. Firedamp is a flammable gas commonly found in coal mines and that accumulate in pockets in the coal. The leak happened quickly, and didn't produce any explosion. The workers closest to the source of the leak didn't have time to escape or put on their protective masks. They were overcome by the fumes, dying inside the mine. "The fire brigade went in but there is less than one percent of oxygen in the area where the gas leak occurred so no-one can stay there until it is completely ventilated," UGT union official José Antonio Colinas told reporters. Five workers were evacuated and then transferred to Leon's hospital, the regional capital. According to reports, one of them, is fighting for his life. It is still unknown why the gas detectors didn't send the alarm. The mine is operated by financially troubled Hullera Vasco-Leonesa. Four years ago, seven people were intoxicated in the same mine due to a firedamp escape. However, the company managed to extract the workers while still alive. Monday's gas leak is Spain's deadliest mining accident since 1995.

HOW TO BECOME AN OIL RIG WORKER NOW - A DAY IN THE LIFE OF - Career Manuals and Guides

03:24
Get industry secrets and in depth career development details: http://tinyurl.com/RigJobsManual Get access to web´s most comprehensive (and real) Oil Rig Job Bank: http://tinyurl.com/RigJobBank General Information on ¨How to get an Oil Rig Job Now¨ As global demand for oil grows, the oil rig industry is under increasing pressure to expand exploration and drilling operations. Many oil companies are capitalizing on relaxed government restrictions and technological advances to maximize production. The new rigs they build require workers to man them. Jobs on oil rigs are physically demanding and work conditions are often dangerous, but oil rig workers earn good salaries, often gain promotions, and can work in locations throughout the world. If you want to learn how to work on an oil rig, follow these guidelines. 1. Assess your ability to work under challenging circumstances. Most oil rig jobs require hard labor under trying conditions. Entry-level workers, like roughnecks and roustabouts, can expect certain challenges. 2. Pursue applicable training and certification. While entry-level jobs on oil rigs are plentiful and technically don't require any experience, few companies will hire a "green hand" to work on their billion-dollar platforms. In general, oil rig workers only need to be 18 or older, have a high school diploma and pass a pre-employment drug test. Successful applicants have usually pursued oil rig training independently or bring transferable skills to the job. All workers must meet certain minimum standards and certifications to work on an oil rig • Current work visa: Most companies will arrange for a current work visa for people working outside their native country. • Immunizations: Oil rig jobs are available in some of the world's most exotic locations, including the coasts of Africa and the waters of Southeast Asia. Workers from other regions often get jobs in these areas, but they must complete a full course of immunizations before they will be hired. • Specialized training courses: Many trade schools and colleges offer classes on various facets of the oil industry, including oil rig work. Most classes blend coursework with hands-on, field experience. Companies often provide training for workers looking to advance their careers in specialized fields. • Certification: All offshore workers are required to earn an Offshore Survival & Firefighting certificate. Specialized workers, like electricians, scaffolders and welders, must hold a state-issued license or certificate in order to work on a rig. 3. Decide what oil rig job is best for you. An oil rig is a place where you really can work hard to get ahead. Most crane operators, shift supervisors and other skilled workers started out in entry-level positions. They set themselves apart by pursuing advanced oil rig training and accepting additional assignments. Inexperienced workers can begin their careers in any one of several oil rig jobs • Roughneck: Roughnecks are general laborers who usually work on the rig deck. They move equipment and supplies, and also are responsible for cleaning equipment and work areas. • Roustabout: These workers are involved in drilling operations. They often move sections of drill pipe and clean spill. Roustabouts aspire to one day become the tool pusher, the senior supervisor on a rig. • Helper: Helpers assist skilled personnel, serving as apprentices for rig electricians, lead welders and heavy-equipment operators. • Painter: Offshore oil rigs, in particular, must be painted constantly to protect the structure from the corrosive effects of saltwater. This is hazardous duty, as painters often must be suspended in harnesses to reach remote areas of the platform. • Motorman: Motormen maintain and repair all rig machinery, including generators and deck equipment. • Deckhand: Deckhands build tow lines to secure barges and boats to the structure, facilitating loading and offloading of cargo. • Steward: Housekeeping needs, including laundry service and janitorial duties, must be met to ensure the smooth operation of an oil rig. • Assistant chef: Galley hands, including assistant chefs, work around the clock to prepare meals for all shifts. This is a job where mainstream experience is directly transferable to duties on the rig.

The cost-effective technology that can clean up oil spills

01:12
Researchers from South Australia’s Flinders University demonstrate how a polymer can act like a sponge to remove crude oil and diesel from seawater. The lead researcher, Dr Justin Chalker, says it has the potential to be a cheap and sustainable recovery tool in areas affected by oil spills. 'Our goal is for this to be used globally,' he says. 'It is inexpensive, and we have an eye for it to be used in parts of the world such as the Amazon Basin in Ecuador and the Niger Delta that don’t have access to solutions to oil spills.' The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil | VICE on HBO

14:38
Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse. Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either. “All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water. As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy. VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni heads to the heart of Nigeria's oil production to witness firsthand the fight over the control of oil in the Niger Delta. Business Under Pressure

00:32
The current resources boom provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to develop a skilled workforce that will create new industries and jobs for the future. However, this is not happening, with Colin Barnett allowing our big resources companies to send their engineering and fabrication work offshore. While there are jobs up north while the big projects are being built, the skilled work we need to create apprenticeships and skills that last beyond the boom is being done overseas. We want the State Government to pass laws to ensure we get WA Jobs From WA Resources. What can be made here, should be made here.

BAD GAS!

04:01
Produced by BlueMoon ScreenMedia ... Music by Laura-Doe ... BAD GAS! features an action at a blockade of Metgasco's CSG exploration well in Glenugie. This action was initiated by the Franklin family and other affected landowners, who chained themselves to a ute to block the entrance to Metgasco's drilling rig, The music video highlights the fact that oil and gas companies in Australia are given exemptions to the clean water act and permitted to contaminate pure water supplies with impunity. Activists were impeded from taking a sample of water from the well site for testing. Supporting profiteering corporate tyranny over the needs of people, police were used to break this and other blockades at Glenugie and arrest those who were exercising their legal right to protect water sources from contamination. The protest is ongoing with further actions at each new CSG exploration site. BAD GAS! is a teaser for a documentary currently in production by BlueMoon ScreenMedia. Please share! For updates on current actions please join The Glenugie to Doubtful Creek Actions - Ongoing (Australian Action Alliance) on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/events/139251122899538/

009 Housekeeping and Mining Methods : Let's Play Minecraft : Geeky Minecrafter

26:43
Just a quick recap of how to keep the body fed while you do all that mining and find all that gold, iron and diamonds. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Follow along as I record "How To" videos on surviving in Minecraft. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I started this to teach my grandkids (yep, I'm a Minecraft playing granny!), but feel like it could expand quite a bit to include some geeky things as well as survival tips. Ideally, we will be thriving, not just surviving. I've been learning about red stone, so there will be videos on using it to automate some of your world as well. Automatic collection on wheat farms, rabbit, cow and pig farms that provide a constant source of meat. Even collection bins, auto sorting and perhaps an elevator or two. ~~~~~~~~~~ Episode Recap: ~~~~~~~~~~ A quick run through of the methods to keep your animals happy and providing meat, leather, wool and eggs for you to use in your Minecraft recipes. We also take a look at my mining methods and I give you a quick tour of the main mine that has netted me so many diamonds. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stay tuned. This is part of a long series of kid friendly how to videos parents can be happy to let their kids watch. Oil Up Despite U.S. Crude Inventories Increase; Gold Continues Gains on European Risk Worries

02:28
Oil is on the rise despite a rise in U.S. crude inventories, as the greenback lost some ground to major currencies. Gold too is up as concerns about Europe's sovereign debt levels particularly in Spain and Portugal remain high, and investors continue to seek out the yellow metal as a safe haven. At 0750 ET, Brent crude is up 0.4% at $78.43 a barrel, while light sweet crude is down 0.3% at $77.42 a barrel, and natural gas is up 1.4% at $5.05 a million British thermal units. Gold is up 0.5% at $1,237.00 an ounce, while silver is up 0.2% at $18.48 an ounce, and copper is down 1.6% at $2.95 a pound. Crude stockpiles increased by 1.7 millon barrels in the latest week, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, while analysts on average had expected the figure to fall by about 1.75 million barrels. BP plc (BP) is up slighly pre-market on the NYSE as the company announced that it will stop paying out dividends this year, and the company came to an agreement with the White House to establish a $20 billion escrow fund to compensate victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Houston-based Oasis Petroleum Inc. (OAS) has raised $588 million in the second-biggest IPO of 2010. The drilling and exploration group which owns 292,000 acres of land in North Dakota and Montana sold 42 million shares at $14 each. In the mining sector, Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM) said that its Batu Hijau copper and gold mine in Indonesia will produce 10% to 20% less than expected this year due to heavy rain. The company had previously projected copper production reaching 573 million pounds at the mine. Barrick Gold Corp.'s (ABX) senior manager of taxation Sean Jermy told Mining Weekly that Australia's proposal to impose a 40% tax on mining profits will impact the company's investment decisions in the country. The Canadian company's executive pointed out that Papua New Guinea tried to levy a similar tax previously, but "it didn't work, and they stepped back from it."

$40B LNG project gets the green light

06:52
It's all systems go for a new mega-construction project in northern British Columbia. A liquefied natural gas venture worth a whopping $40 billion has been given the go-ahead. It's made up of more than 600 kilometres of pipeline stretching from the Alberta-B.C. border to a new processing plant on the coast in Kitimat. It has support from all levels of government - and local First Nations - but it's not short on critics or controversy. »»» Subscribe to The National to watch more videos here: https://www.youtube.com/user/CBCTheNational?sub_confirmation=1 Voice Your Opinion & Connect With Us Online: The National Updates on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thenational The National Updates on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CBCTheNational »»» »»» »»» »»» »»» The National is CBC Television's flagship news program.
