Tar Sands Oil Extraction - The Dirty Truth

11:39
Environmental devastation of the land, water, and air - the largest industrial energy project in the world is extracting crude oil from bitumen found beneath the pristine boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Effecting a land mass equivalent in size to Florida or England, Both industry and government are putting money before the health and security of its people and the environment. Tar sands take 3 barrels of water to process every barrel of oil extracted. Ninety percent of this water becomes so toxic that it must be stored in tailing ponds. Unfortunately these ponds regularly leach pollution into the third largest watershed in the world. Water depletion, exploitation, privatization and contamination has become one of the most important issues facing humanity this century. Check out my other video on water issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMmpg35Bym0 and see my other videos to learn about the dark side of fossil fuels. The Largest Oil Rig in The World

19:43
Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. Fracking Facts: Benefits of Frac Sand Mining

03:10
Heartland research fellow Isaac Orr is back for the 7th video installment in the Fracking Facts series, this time from an industrial sand mine in Wisconsin. Sand mines are a necessary component in the hydraulic fracturing (i.e., fracking) process. In states like Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota, the sand mining industry has created thousands of new jobs for hard-working Americans and generated additional income for landowners who have this particular sand on their property. Far from being a health or environmental risk, sand mining is a century-old industry that is used in the production of glass, toothpaste, livestock bedding, and natural gas. Watch the video and learn more about the benefits of frac sand mining! CAR LLC - Oil Sand Commissioning & Bitumen Froth Production (June 13-14, 2012)

40:07
Oil Sands Commissioning - continuous bitumen froth production in CAR's Asphalt Ridge facility. June 14, 2012. Total operating time - approximately 40 hours (including shutdown). Total straight production time - approximately 34 hours non-stop (including final PST froth overflow). Approximately 2,000 tons of oil sands ore was processed and over 1,000 barrels of bitumen froth was successfully produced in CAR's production site in Vernal, Utah, utilizing CAR's proven and modified Clark hot-water extraction process. This continuous froth production exercise also deployed CAR's proven water treatment process to recover process water from dispensed sands (tailings) and thickener/clarifier underflow solids (fine clay), and recycle the water back to the conditioning process for re-utilization. A process of centrifugation was incorporated using two decanter-type centrifuges into the dewatering process of the fines for higher recovery and recyclability of process water. Dry and stackable tailings were produced as a result, with no traceable bitumen residue in the dispensed sand (see video). The recovery ratio between the primary (A & B) for near future evaporation and production of dry froth material was high; no material handling issues were encountered in the ore stockpiling, feeding and conditioning process during the entire froth production. Slurry pipes and pumps were also operating normally; no serious plugging issues were encountered and albeit a few glitches with a couple of the older (level transmitter) instruments, overall PLC/HMI controls were functioning normally during the whole production run. Overall, the commissioning of oil sands to test and produce bitumen froth at the Crown Asphalt Ridge facility during June 13-14 was a great success!

Black Sand Mining Processing Plant, Sta. Catalina, Ilocos Sur, July 12, 2013

12:05
Continuing destructive black sand mining processing plant built in Sitio Namnama, Tamorong, Sta. Catalina, Ilocos Sur as seen in this video taken on July 12, 2013 by ISCAPE. Sta. Catalina officials cover up the mining operation by refusing to claim the site as territorial jurisdiction of Sta. Catalina municipality. PENRO Ilocos Sur has declared officially that Sitio Namnama the site of black sand mining processing plant is within the territory of Sta. Catalina. Sta. Catalina officials, pretending to be against black sand mining but in reality gripped by the terror political lords cannot resist the business aggression of black sand mining. Only the people of Sta. Catalina residing in the area or abroad can stop the plunder of the land. Ilocos Sur must conquer fear and reject political lordism as root system of exploitation and destruction.

South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

10:37
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Permian Basin Frac Sand Mine Time-Lapse Construction Video

01:31
This time-lapse video shows the spectacular feat of turning west Texas ranch land into a state-of-the-art regional frac sand mine in just a few short months. Groundbreaking on the first of two Black Mountain Sand facilities in the Permian Basin started in June 2017, with the first commercial truckload rolling out of the Vest facility on January 22, 2018. The Vest Mine is the opening chapter in the Black Mountain Sand story. The mine is named after the Vest family who homesteaded in Winkler County, Texas and built a successful ranch whose legacy has lasted for generations and continues today. It is from this storied land that Black Mountain Sand has carved out a reserve base of over 1.5 billion tons of high-quality white frac sand. Today, our flagship product, Winkler White®, is helping meet the completion needs of E&P companies operating throughout the Permian Basin. Since the Vest Mine opened for business, we are proud to have reached the 500 truck per day milestone. Once fully operational in mid-2018, Vest and its sister mine, El Dorado, will boast the largest mining capacity in the Permian Basin at 8,000,000 annual tons, which equates to approximately 320,000 truckloads worth of frac sand per year. If you'd like to learn more about Black Mountain Sand, please visit the About Us link here, http://www.blackmountainsand.com/about-us/.
