How is coal mined? Read Full Story: http://www.spoonfeeding.in/2013/02/how-is-coal-mined-what-is-surface.html Mining is the process of removing coal from the ground. There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

Gold is now primarily found in very low concentrations. Open pit mines, like the one shown in this video, process tons of rock in order to extract just a few ounces. This process is extremely damaging to the environment. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

www.minecristal.ca Stay informed about our new videos: subscribe to our YouTube channel "Mine Cristal". This mine is located in Bonsecours, Quebec, Canada. Photos and video clips shown here date from 1989 - 2012. The open-pit mine produces splendid quartz crystals with exceptional clarity. The largest single crystals measure 60 cm (24 inches) in length. Since mining began in 1989, 32 types, or morphologies of quartz crystals have been catalogued. Geological research into the origins of these crystals has revealed that they formed at this location some 300 million years ago under extreme conditions of heat and pressure. We harvest crystals in the mine only as needed, to supply our store with a sufficient quantity of quartz crystals. Exceptionally (for a mine), we harvest all the crystals by hand and without the use of dynamite. It is a privilege for us to participate in the discovery and extraction of these true gems of nature. The extraction process is done in a manner which respects both the environment and the crystals: we endeavor to keep the crystals whole and in a pristine state. In the museum and the store, our crystals are presented in an untouched, natural state. Amazingly, each crystal is an intricate work of art made by Nature; no two are alike and this makes them even more fascinating! Mine Cristal is considered by experts to be a “geological gem,” one of Canada’s great natural sites, due to it’s unique and abundant mineralogical deposits.

Hazelwood Open Cut Coal Mine Fire Smokes Morwell - Morwell Open Cut Mine is Still Burning Will You Survive a Disaster! http://finditwithusonline.com/FamilySurvivalCourse Two weeks after the Hernes Oak fire and the Morwell grass fire and Hazelwood open cut coal mine fire still burns and smokes out the Morwell Township. Residents in some parts of Morwell have had to leave for health reasons. Even a couple of primary schools are not operating, opting to move young students to other schools sites out of the town. Ash from the coal fire drops over most of the town each and every day. In this video I have put together a few different shots to give you an idea on how bad the smoke is. Not to mention that the carbon monoxide levels are high and the smell of the smoke creeps into the house and stays in your clothes. I have a friend with an in ground pool who is forever cleaning it, added costs he did not need being only within a short distance for the mine. Every day we are getting warnings about the air quality, to stay indoors or leave the area. I hope that the fire services and the mine management can get this mine fire out ASAP! Below is a breakdown of what we saw from each photo. This view of the Hazelwood open cut coal mine is right next to the Princess Freeway where the smoke plumes are the thickest. Looking South, East over the Hazelwood Morwell open cut coal mine. View from the Princess Freeway looking South, West over the Hazelwood open cut coal mine. West view along the Freeway of the smoke blowing over the road. South, West view from the freeway over the Hazelwood open cut coal mine. Looking West next to the coal mine, view along the Freeway where the smoke gets thicker. Smoke is so thick here; it interferes with the cameras focus. Looking from Mac Donald's Track Hernes Oak you get a better idea of how much smoke is still coming up out of the Hazelwood Open Cut mine. In the center of town on the south side the smoke causes visibility problems along with ash particles. On low wind or no breeze days the smoke fills the streets of Morwell. On these days it is hard to see more than 50 meters ahead in some parts of the town center. As the smoke rises when the sun is out it shows a yellow glow on the ground and through the smoke. We only go up to the shops for short periods and a few people are now wearing dust masks to help filter out the smoke. Mountain top removal in Alabama. Sloan Mountain Mine owned by MS&R Equipment Co. This strip mine is located on a bend along the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River in Jefferson County, Alabama. In addition to a long list of problems, the runoff from this mine has been pouring a significant amount of sediments and contaminants into the Locust Fork River. Mines like this are being increasingly permitted throughout Alabama. In Alabama there are weak regulations and lax enforcement of them, making it easy for coal companies to destroy mountains, alter wildlife habitat, mine through and pollute streams, and diminish the quality of life for nearby residents. A strip mine can clear the forest, blast, and excavate over 200 feet deep within just 100 feet of a river and within 300 feet of an inhabited home. OSMRE (Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement) - http://www.osmre.gov - was established under The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977 - http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/30/25 This clip is from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaUPOI... (23 minutes) A Page In Time - Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement 1996 - Publication VID-009 - A video describing how the Surface Mining Law is implemented. === Optimism on Strip-Mine Law On the first anniversary of the Federal strip-mining law, there is hope that voluntary commitments by the top coal companies will help set the pace for compliance with the controversial environmental legislation. By Ben A. Franklin, Special to The New York Times, August 5, 1978 (Excerpts) But the conviction is growing that the bitterly controversial strip-mining law enacted a year ago to regulate how the earth is torn up and replaced to minimize environmental disruption stands a fair chance of working. In the agency assigned to administer the law, the Interior Department's new Office of Surface Mining, the reasons cited include the voluntary commitment of top executives of two big Appalachian strippers, the Pittson Company and the Falcon Coal Company, to work toward a pace-setting model of compliance in the Eastern mountain region where the enforcement problems of the office are the fiercest. Although the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, one of the decades's major environmental measures, became law August 3, 1977, and became effective last May, the surface-mining office was held to bare skeleton of a staff borrowed from other agencies for seven months. Its first appropriation was tied up in Congress from August 1977 to last March . [The initial 28 federal inspectors were not hired until 4/9/1978; provision of the law became effective on 2/2/1978, on new coal mining operations.] So the agency's staff is still short-handed. Environmental regulations that are the cutting edge of the law are months late in publication. And of the 200 Federal strip-mine inspectors authorized, only 61 are on board. [More than half of these still being trained and not yet authorized to do inspections.] One small striper in Ohio who failed during a two-week grace period to react correctly to a routine Federal mine inspector's citation for lack of required mine roadway signs -- in effect the mine had been given a "traffic ticket" or warning -- has learned the consequences of "willful failure to comply": a mine closure order and a $750-a-day fine that may total $1500. The fine is mandatory under the law. As of last week, strip-mine operators were still learning. In 337 Federal inspections since May 4, there have been 97 notices of violations or warnings and 33 cessation orders or closures for flagrant disregard -- a noncompliance rate of 38 percent. --- COAL SURFACE MINING AND RECLAMATION: An Environmental and Economic Assessment of Alternatives (U.S. Senate report, March 1973) http://groups.google.com/group/bob-mooney/web/1973-senate-report --- Investigation: Enforcement of Strip Mining Laws, 1975 http://groups.google.com/group/bob-mooney/web/cspi-enforcement-of-strip-mining-laws-1975 (Excerpt from an editorial in The Washington Post, 1/8/1976) Because inspectors are responsible for so many operations, many sites are rarely visited. Inspections are conducted as quick surveys instead of thorough investigations...As a result of political appointments and poor field training programs, inspectors often lack the necessary technical skills for detecting violations. When an inspector is highly skilled, mining interests often lure him away with a 200 or 300 percent salary increase. Many blatant violations are never reported to the state central enforcement office. A wide variety of industry favors are available to cooperative inspectors. On the other hand, some diligent inspectors have encountered personal threats and beatings. The study has created controversy in the coalfields as could have been predicted; any suggestion that coal companies are something less than public-spirited citizens rushing to save America in the energy crisis is sure to be met in some quarters with hostile criticism. It is significant, though, that soon after the study's appearance, Kentucky's highest-ranking strip mine official was fired. In Washington, Rep. John Seiberling (D-Ohio) believes that "this study gives us the ammunition to write effective legislation." That may well be needed, considering that this year's effort to get strip mining provisions added onto another bill have almost been spent. If anything, the documentation of coalfield abuses strengthens the case for strong federal controls. --- OSMRE in its early years -- Interivew with regional director Ed Imhoff, 1980 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLg_MywIiKY
