There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. a litchi mission over tower colliery opencast mine, opened in 2012 after tower colliery's deep mine closed in 2008. signal was lost shortly after the drone flew beyond the hill, the mission continued until batt low prompted a return to home. Two potentially serious issues were observed. 1. despite me programming a 70mtr relative to ground mission, the ground level at the far side of the opencast had been artificially made up, way beyond any allowance that i anticipated, resulting in a worryingly low fly-by. So use topography data as an advisory measurement. 2. the return-to-home height is set relative to take-off, leading to a straight-line trajectory to the home point ignoring the large hill. (i regained signal just before this and sent the drone up, despite litchi insisting on sending it home). Litchi used with mavic pro 4k.

Mirny mine is a former open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. This mine is 525 meters deep which made it 4th Deepest mine in the world with a diameter of 1,200 meter and is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine. Now this Diamond mine is inactive, while it was operational it was taking two hours for trucks to drive from the top to the bottom of the mine.

The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013. Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata). The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit. As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010. The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually. The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. A belt line is used to carry spoils from open pit coal mine. A D-11 pushes material down to a 950 LeToureau loader. The loader dumps material into a crusher that breaks the rock down small enough to be sent up a series of conveyor belts and a long line to the stockpile. There are five previous mined seams of coal in this pit and you can see some of the old workings in the video.

Proposals for an open cast mine at Nant Llesg, Rhymney will soon be submitted by Scottish developer Miller Argent. This will be a huge surface mine that would remain in operation for 17 years and excavate around 6m tonnes of coal from an area of around 3,000 acres - its eastern edge being just 500m from the town of Rhymney. Green Valleys Alliance is a consortium of local businesses with backing from the local community that launched its opposition to the proposals in July. The Alliance is concerned that the mine will have a negative impact on local jobs and investment in the area, be detrimental to the environment and people's quality of life and could make the local population vulnerable to long term health risks. Local businessman Mitchell Field, who employs 140 people at Rhymney-based cosmetics business Richards & Appleby Ltd and features in the video, said: "We have decided to release this video to highlight the negative impact that these proposals will have on the local area and show people exactly why our group is opposed to the creation of this mine." "The video shows the areas that will be affected - lush green fields and farm land that will be completely destroyed - and highlights our concerns about the real risk of job losses and economic decline in the area if this mine goes ahead." Incredible Story of Raniganj Coalmine, When 220 coal miners working the night shift realized that one of their coal wall blasts had cracked the underground water table, all they could do was run. On that fateful day, when the 220 coal miners working the night shift realized that one of their coal wall blasts had cracked the underground water table, all they could do was run. Working closest to the lift shaft, 149 miners were quickly pulled out. Six were killed while 64 lodged themselves into crevices and cavities to escape the onslaught of the water, reports Telegraph. One man swam in the dark for 36 hours straight to reach the lift! No sooner the incident reached the ears of the authorities, the resuce operation began. Since the 64 people were spread across six different locations, six holes were drilled after referring the mine-map. Walkie-talkies to communicate with the trapped miners, along with food and water, were lowered into the mine. A rescue capsule was made from steel and iron, which was then lowered into the mine with the help of a make-shift pulley and one by one each of the miners were brought up, like water from a well. Though this was a joint effort, one man stands out from the rest: Engineer Jaswant Singh Gill who was the Additional Chief Mining Engineer of Coal India Limited. He volunteered to go into the mine, where he would open the door of the capsule, help the nearest miner to get into the capsule and then signal the people above to pull the capusle. 2)He stayed there until each one of the miners was pulled out, despite protests from the state-owned company, which did not want to lose one of its high-ranking officer. Jaswant Singh Gill was later awareded Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak in 1991 and Bhagat Singh Puran award for service to humanity last year. No points for guessing the protagonist of Akshay Kumar’s film! The Raniganj mine, which provided 88% of the country’s coal in the 19th century, now only provides less than a tenth of India’s total coal production, according to India Today. While Raniganj has been relegated to the pages of history, the story of the Raniganj rescue mission is one that will live on as a testimony of the strength of a people poor in wealth but rich in resolve.

Bob and myself both have extensive knowledge of mines and mining techniques through working in the industry, old workings are extremely dangerous and must only be entered with a full understanding of how they work, many transfer chutes, winzes, shafts and open stopes make it a hazardous environment. History of Cligga Mine. Cligga Wolfram & Tin Mine lies on the cliff tops about one and a quarter miles southwest of Perranporth on the North Cornish coast. The granite pegmatite cliffs have been altered to greisen and exhibit jointing and veining. The veins often filled with cassiterite (tin oxide), wolframite, mispickel (arsenical pyrite) and the copper/iron suphides, chalcopyrite and bornite. Silver ore has also been reported here. There is one shaft on the sett called Contact Shaft and two adits, one at beach level called Beach Adit, the other atop the cliffs and unsurprisingly called Cliff Adit. The mine worked in the early part of the twentieth century although 'Old Men's Workings' from the past are quite visible as you approach the area. Mining restarted in 1938 after a period of closure prior to the mine being taken over by the 'Rhodesian Mines Trust Limited in 1939'. Trials were carried out around this time to see if it was more feasible to work the stockwork as an open cast pit rather than an underground mine, but this came to nothing. There is surprisingly little information on Cligga although there are production records showing that between 1940 and 1944, 300 tons of wolfram and 200 tons of black tin were raised and sold. 1945 Cligga Mine closed. The War was nearly over and shipments of American tungsten were now arriving regularly in England. The high cost of producing a small quantity of tungsten from Cligga could no longer by justified and therefore, production at Cligga was halted. In 1962 the 'Geevor Mining Company took out a lease on the mine and in collaboration with the Sungesi Besi, Tronoh and Panang Companies started a programme of shaft rehabilitation and deepening with a view to re-opening the mine. Contact shaft was deepened to 550 feet from surface, drives 'on lode' were started both seawards and inland. However water was hit at about 250 feet from the shaft and work there abandoned. The seaward drive continued for some 800 feet before further exploration by diamond drilling commenced. The results were inconclusive, and by early 1964 Geevor had decided to unwater 'Levant' mine instead of re-opening Cligga. 1976 there was renewed interest in mining for tin on a small scale at Cligga, and Wheal Concord undertook a limited programme of evaluation. Wheal Concord Ltd planned to re-open contact shaft in 1984-1985, but the collapse of the tin-market in October 1985 put a stop to this. Cornish tin mines are dangerous only people with knowledge of working mines should enter but then only with extreme caution. Their intention is to remove up to 200,000 tonnes of coal by digging a hole up to 100ft deep. There are about 1300 houses within 500m of this site. In Scotland and Wales, such mining activity cannot take place within 500m of houses by law. No such protection exists in England. There are also nurseries, primary and secondary schools, care homes and doctors surgeries within 1km of the site.
