AJO ARIZONA- WHERE THE REAL SOUTH MEETS THE REAL WEST jschreck

04:04
Ajo is the Spanish word for garlic (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈaxo]). The Spanish may have named the place using the familiar word in place of the similar-sounding O'odham word for paint (oʼoho). The Tohono O'odham people obtained red paint pigments from the area. Native Americans, Spaniards and Americans have all extracted mineral wealth from Ajo's abundant ore deposits. In the early nineteenth century, there was a Spanish mine nicknamed "Old Bat Hole" that was abandoned due to Indian raids. Tom Childs, Sr., found the deserted mine complete with a 60-foot (18 m) shaft, mesquite ladders, and rawhide buckets in 1847. He did not stay long at that time, because he was on his way to the silver mines near Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. Three and a half decades later, Childs and his son returned with a friend and started developing the abandoned mine. In the year 1884, the camp at Ajo was practically abandoned. Not a soul was in camp when Tom Childs Sr., and his son arrived. With them was Washington Michael Jacobs of Tucson, Arizona...Childs and Jacobs located the mining claim which constituted most of the old Ajo group of mines. They made a permanent camp and worked the mines.[3] High-grade native copper made Ajo the first copper mine in Arizona. Soon the Arizona Mining & Trading company, formed by Peter R. Brady, a friend of Childs, worked the rich surface ores, shipping loads around Cape Horn for smelting in Swansea, Wales, in the mid-1880s. The mine closed when a ship sank off the coast of Patagonia. Long supply lines and the lack of water discouraged large mining companies With the advent of new recovery methods for low-grade ore, Ajo boomed. In 1911, Col. John Campbell Greenway, a Rough Rider and star Yale athlete, bought the New Cornelia mine from John Boddie. He became general manager of the Calumet and the Arizona mining company and expanded it on a grand scale. The Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend Railroad was built from Gila Bend to serve the mining industry and was in service from 1916 to 1985. In 1921, Phelps Dodge, the nation's largest copper company, bought New Cornelia and the mine became the New Cornelia Branch of Phelps Dodge, managed by Michael Curley. For several decades more than 1,000 employees worked for Phelps Dodge in the open pit mine. In 1983 union-affiliated mine employees went on strike. The mine continued with non-union labor for a short while before stopping production in 1985. [4] Ajo is now home to many retired people, to Border Patrol agents, and young families.

2014 Scott Shields, Medal of Merit Under 40, Amer. Mining Hall of Fame

02:25
The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is pleased to recognize Scott Shields as a 2014 recipient of the Medal of Merit Under 40 for induction into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Manager, Mining Application Engineering, Joy Global Surface Mining. Scott M. Shields is a fifth-generation Arizona Miner. In 1995 he joined the Phelps Dodge Morenci Mine as a Surveyor and despite his young age, was successfully able to implement new techniques (both conceptual and in field) to improve mine operations. Shields initiated ground-breaking work with GPS integration and co-authored Optimization of GPS on Track Type Dozers and GPS in the Pits: Differential GPS Applications at the Morenci Copper Mine. This novel idea of building roads by using GPS without first conducting surveys won best of session at the Institute of Navigation conference and resulted in Shields being sponsored by Senator John McCain to rep resent Phelps Dodge Mining Company for "GPS on the Hill." During his tenure at Phelps Dodge and later with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., Shields helped to develop sulfide leaching with bacterial augmentation, advanced electrowinning technologies, leach pad monitoring, and GPS integration. While serving as the Autonomous Mining Program Site Coordinator, Shields supervised the construction of the San Juan Experimental Mine and was instrumental in laying the groundwork for a real autonomous mine of the future. Shields left Freeport-McMoRan in 2007 to earn a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering at The University of Arizona. While attending school, he was employed by the U of A as an associate mine engineer and was placed in charge of overseeing the design and construction of the new San Xavier Underground Training Center, facilitating research funded jointly by mining companies, private organizations, and the government. Although challenged with full-time work and school, Shields was the winner of the 2008 Copper Club Scholarship, the 2009 Leonard Judd Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Scholarship, the Mining Engineering nominee for the Thomas G. Chapman fellowship and scholarship, the 2010 MMSA/SMEF Presidential Scholarship, and was the UA College of Engineering 2011 Outstanding Senior in Mining Engineering. In addition, Shields graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011 and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, a National Engineering Academic Fraternity. Shields now manages a team of Joy Global Mining Engineers supporting the applications of P&H Surface Mining and Joy Mining Machinery Underground products. Notably he has provided optimization and best practice in more than 60 mines and in 18 countries on five continents. Shields is an adviser for The University of Arizona ILB, Montana Tech MIAB, University of Missouri Science and Technology Advisory Committee, South Dakota School of Mines ECE Advisory Board, and he also serves as an Executive Committee Member and officer of the SME.

01:37
The Mining Foundation of the Southwest was pleased to recognize WestLand Resources, Inc. with the 2016 Industry Partnership Award during the 34th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony in Tucson on 3 December 2016. WestLand Resources, Inc. (WestLand) was started in February 1997 with a small office space in Tucson, Arizona, and three young professionals who aspired to provide superior environmental and engineering consulting services. From the start, the company culture was one of scientific integrity, technical excellence, and passion for the work. By the end of 1997, the company had added nine additional employees, and counted several major Arizona mining entities among their earliest clients. In 2001, WestLand merged with Whitman & Company, another local firm specializing in environmental permitting and compliance for the mining industry. Mining has been an integral component of WestLand from the earliest days of the business, and remains so today. Today, WestLand consists of over 120 employees and serves clients from offices in Tucson, Phoenix, and Flagstaff, and project offices in Globe and Ft. Defiance. Several of WestLand’s Principals had longstanding experience in mining fields even prior to the existence of WestLand. President and CEO, Jim Tress received his first assignment for Phelps Dodge in 1986, and he obtained his first Clean Water Act Section 404 permit for the ASARCO Ray Mine in 1991. Jim’s career has spanned several decades and allowed him to spearhead the environmental permitting for numerous major expansion efforts at mining entities throughout the southwest. WestLand’s beloved Kathy Whitman (August 24, 1959 – November 26, 2012), founder of Whitman & Company, began her career in the mining and environmental industry at Bridger Coal Company in Rock Springs, Wyoming in the 1980’s, before moving to Globe, AZ, to work for Magma Copper Company doing environment compliance and permitting - a field in which she became acknowledged for her expertise and understanding of government permitting processes. Kathy later worked for Carlota Copper Company on her first greenfields project, before eventually starting Whitman & Company in 1997. Kathy Whitman and several employees joined WestLand in 2001, including Brian Lindenlaub, who later became a WestLand Principal and Environmental Sector Vice President. Kathy was an important part of the senior leadership team at WestLand, and a well-respected environmental professional in the mining industry, until her passing in 2012. WestLand has been responding to the engineering, environmental, and regulatory challenges facing mining entities and numerous other industries, including transportation, power, development and utilities, for nearly 20 years. The company has worked with the majority of the major hard rock mining entities in Arizona and New Mexico, as well as sites in Utah, California, Colorado, Nevada and Ohio. The company’s design, engineering, and regulatory permitting professionals have a long history of providing support and solutions for the complex environmental and engineering challenges associated with mining projects. WestLand brings technical expertise and value engineering principles to every project. Just as WestLand has played an important role in assisting mining companies with environmental compliance and engineering challenges, the mining industry has played a vital role in WestLand’s growth and evolution. The owners and staff of WestLand are proud of their history working with mining operations in the Southwest and look forward to a long and beneficial continuing partnership.

Haunted Hospital-St Anthony's Hospital

04:29
This is at St. Anthony's Hospital in Houston Texas. This hospital is known to be haunted. I was an employee there for 3 years and have witnessed strange things throughout those years. This video was taken during the time this hall was closed due to the hospital being shut down. There were no patients in any rooms and the cameras were motion detected and would only turn on when movement was detected. As you can see the security guard seems to be seeing something on the monitor but when he goes to view he see's nothing. But you can clearly see what seems to be a dark shadow go behind him, down the hall, up the walls and back and forth in rooms. Several people have died at this hospital so I have no doubt these are spirits still walking the halls of St. Anthony's Hospital.

South Bisbee Goodbye

14:17
"The greatest crimes against humanity are perpetrated by people just doing their jobs." - Chris Hedges. No doubt Richard Ducote, Community Affairs Manager for Freeport-McMoRan, was doing his job when he informed the lifelong residents of South Bisbee, Arizona, that they would be paid $50 a square foot for their homes, and had five months to move out. Like the Highland Clearances of the 18th and 19th centuries, some homes have already been destroyed before the homeowners had time to remove their belongings. Although it seems a local issue, the plight of these residents is as global as it is timeless. It is the story of every person robbed of life savings by financial corporations, of every home foreclosed, of every indigenous people exploited and poisoned by the oil corporations. Here are four stories, including that of 63-year resident Mabel Farley, whose husband worked all his life for "Phillip Dodge," who raised her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in her house in South Bisbee, and who cannot conceive of the multinational Freeport-McMoRan Mining Corporation except as a person, who "must be a very mean man."

2) The smoke consists of metals and acids, which explains the bluish and reddish colors of the smoke. None of the smoke is steam. ASARCO must also report its releases into the air of metals and acids in its Toxics Release Inventory reports, but it reports far, far more as emanating from its smokestack than as "fugitive" (uncontrolled) emissions.
