Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. is happy to present The Monarch Rand Gold Mine. The Monarch Rand has a spotty history from its inception to present day. The mine has been noted for a large gold vein which is chased by the drift works. This vein is noted to be 3 ½ feet wide and carrying gold values of over 2 ounces per ton ($48.00 per ton with Gold priced at $20.75 per ounce). The mine is a massive old beast which has not been surveyed or mapped for at least 50 years. The original workings of the mine were reported to be 1600 feet. Today, there should be well over 4000' of workings in the mine.

Rock City is a large string of boulders strewn on the hills in an area that used to be on the shore of the ocean. Now it is inland from Berkeley CA. These boulders have been manipulated by various means, there is more here than meets the eye. Much of the interesting caves are not natural formations. Both natural erosion from water and human/intelligent intervention can be seen at this site. Just what is natural and what is artificially produced is foggy area as there are many possible explanations as to how the caves and stones were worked. There are many unusual looking boulders here and though there are clearly inscriptions they are from many different time periods and covered in graffiti.

We took a trip to Mill Creek Crystal Cave August 2009 when the water levels were still pretty high. We had way too much fun and accidentally dropped our camera in a plunge pool below a small falls. We couldn't find it after feeling around in the below 40 degree water for a few minutes and gave up. Jack and I recovered the camera Jan. 2010 when the water levels were much lower and the pool wasn't being churned by a waterfall. Props to the camera maker because the videos were still on the card after half a year of being underwater.

Minnie Mine is a true diamond in the rough. Early miners in the French Gulch area were more concerned with dredging than singletrack, but, more than 100 years later, the remnants of mines, shafts and tailings are still strewn across the hillside, peeking out between aspen and pine tree stands. For more information about the Minnie Mine Trail visit http://bit.ly/MinnieMineTrail.

President John F. Kennedy’s remarks at the Dedication fo the Whiskeytown, California, Dam and Reservoir. In his opening words the President referred to U.S. Representative Harold T. Johnson, Governor Edmund G. Brown, State Senator Edwin J. Regan, and Assemblywoman Pauline L. Davis--all of California; Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall; U.S. Senator Alan Bible of Nevada; Deputy Director Fred I- Engle of the California Conservation Division, representing his brother U.S. Senator Clair Engle; Lawrence W. Carr of Redding, Calif., brother of Under Secretary of the Interior James K. Carr; and Federal District Court Judge Oliver Carter of San Francisco. My old colleague and your distinguished Congressman, "Bizz" Johnson, Governor Brown, Senator Regan, Assemblywoman Davis, Secretary Udall, Senator Bible, Mr. Engle, representing Clair, Larry Carr, Judge Carter, ladies and gentlemen: I appreciate the chance to be here in Whiskeytown and to say a few words in this distinguished community. I was reminded, when I read my itinerary, of a poem by Stephen Vincent Benet called "American Names," and he started it off: I have fallen in love with American names, The sharp names that never get fat, The snakeskin-titles of mining-claims, The plumed war-bonnet of Medicine Hat, Tucson and Deadwood and Lost Mule Flat. Then he goes on to talk about some famous American names, not Whiskeytown, but I think he could add it to the roster, because the name of this community tells a good deal about the early beginnings of this State and country.

As a kid Steve Rees played in caves and learned how the earth could cool. As an adult, he buried two shipping containers and created an off-grid retirement home for himself and his wife Shirley. After a few years of camping on their 10 acre plot in Northern California, they bought two shipping containers, hired an excavator and got to work. Doing most of the work themselves, their finished home cost them $30,000 (solar included). Their 640-square-foot space cost them less than $50 per square foot. Rees explains that while this is less than conventional construction costs, the savings only begin with construction. With a solar-powered well, a bit of propane and solar tubes for most of their light, they haven’t had any city water or electric bills since 2002. Winter temperatures in their home (even during 20 degrees outside) never fall below 62 degrees (an RV catalytic heater is sufficient for heating). Even when the temperature rises to 110 outside in the summer, their home has never risen above 82 degrees. When they asked the county about permitting they were told they “didn’t have a permit for burying containers”. They have been inspected since completing their home and they have a permitted septic system and a permitted well, just no permit for a single family dwelling. Yosemite View Ranch is one of the finest large ranch and recreational properties in the California Sierra Foothills. If you need to take a break from your ranching operation, you can go horseback riding, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, camping, and gold mining. Within 30 minutes there are three lakes for boating, fishing and swimming. For the hunter, you can hunt for trophy black tail deer and black bear on the ranch, as well as turkey, quail and doves. This property is located in Mariposa County about 7 miles from Coulterville, CA . Yosemite National Park, considered one of the most spectacular parks in the world, is just a short drive away. From parts of the ranch you can see Half Dome...the park is within a day's horseback ride. The ranch has large areas that are fenced and cross fenced for livestock. The Ranch can support up to 200 head of cattle, but there are several areas that could be cleared to create more grazing land. Yosemite View Ranch has springs and ponds supplying year round water. There are many areas for building your ranch home and even a large area that can be developed into a landing strip. The Central Sierra foothills have a long history of gold mining dating back to the great California Gold Rush. Yosemite Ranch lies in the richest area, the Mother Lode Gold Belt and includes four patented mining parcels, The Sweetwater Lode, The Southern Cross Lode, The Alta Quartz Lode and the Talc Mine, along with remnants of an old mining town, Cat Town History. The Bay Area is just a little over 2 hours away, Fresno and Sacramento less than 2 hours. When you develop your landing strip, you can be on your property from in state or out of state in no time. The ranch sits at a perfect elevation below the snow line, although you might get a dusting from time to time, and above the fog line, so the weather is often cool and clear. Weather We look forward to sharing this ranch with those looking to develop and escape to some of nature's most beautiful land. The original 1883 Homestead is a shadow of the pioneer spirit that still remains of the Shaw Ranch. The stone foundation and post and beam barn from the homestead maintains the history and romance of the early settlers to what was then known as "The Long Gulch" area. This fascinating historical element coincides with the beautiful log home that has all the amenities and was custom designed by the current owner. The area is dotted with gold mines.

Here in Southwestern Pennsylvania we have what has become known as the underwater ghost town. I am of course refering to the former town of Somerfield which was destroyed in the 1940's when they constructed the dam in Confluence. During a few months in winter when the water level is at it's lowest Somerfield can be seen once again. There are two stone bridges...the town's sidewalks...foundations. Even the stumps that were formerly large trees along the main street can even been seen. Old Route 40...(The National Pike)...still runs along the floor of the lake. This clip features the larger of the two stone bridges. I recorded this clip on November 13, 2010.

2001. Water is the most precious commodity on earth. Good stewardship of our nation's forest means protecting our vital watersheds. In this program, we look at how the Forest Service places a high priority on managing watersheds across the nation. This program looks at three examples: The Los Angleles and San Gabiel Riers in Southern California, the Continental Divide along the Northern Rockies, and the Chesapeake Bay and all its many tributaries. In each case, the Forest Service is fulfilling its historic mission of restoring and conserving the quality and the flow of water.
