With that new GIA Field video you will be taken with the GIA Field Expedition (FE56) that took place in September 2014 in Zambia. You will surely feel the lure of emerald—central Africa’s green treasure—in this short GIA video. First, you’ll visit the Musakashi, Zambia, emerald mining area where mining is carried out by local people with simple hand tools. Next, you’ll travel with Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu and the GIA team to Zambia’s Kafubu area, one of Africa’s oldest gem-mining areas. “There are maybe 400 mines, and maybe less than 10 are active,” says Pardieu. While there, you’ll witness several active emerald mines. Some are very small-scale and operated by local people, while some, like the MIKU and the KAGEM mines, are very large. The latter is probably the largest colored gemstone mining pit in the world. In this video, you’ll view the entire KAGEM operation—a modern, highly sophisticated mechanized pit mine. As you stand on the rim of the pit, a ripple of explosions blasts ore for processing. You will witness workers recovering emeralds from the pit. You’ll also venture underground into Gemfields’ exploratory underground workings and see the firm’s secure processing and sorting facility. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

For many working in mines across the country work is tedious with minimal pay. But this is often the only employment option available. Now their only source of income could be in doubt following the issuance of a legal notice that will see royalties across the mining sector adjusted upward as of 30th of October. The revised royalty rates will significantly affect operating costs across the sector. Mining cabinet secretary Najib Balala defended the increment as a necessary revision and outlined his intention to garner a pan African collective royalty agreement. Michelle Morgan takes a look at the impact the revised royalties are likely to have on the mining industry.

«Quickgold» (www.quickgold.ru) is a project about the origin of gold as a symbol of wealth and its connection to human labor, condition and identity. It is based on the daily life of people involved in gold mining and processing in the Madre de Dios province in Peru, but it also has a broader meaning. The word “quickgold” is derived from “quicksilver” - the mercury used in gold processing. Peruvians call their country pais minero, “the mining country". Gold mining and processing are the foundation of life in Madre de Dios province. Up to 20 tons of gold are produced in Madre de Dios annually by 60,000 miners scattered around more than 85,000 square kilometers. Fifteen percent of gold mining in Peru is illegal, generating twice as much profit as drug-dealing. Currently, no miners can legalize their activities in Madre de Dios because of contradictory laws. To extract the gold, quicksilver (mercury) is mixed into the gold-containing sand, binding the gold particles together. Then this mercury-gold ball is heated in a retort and the quicksilver evaporates, leaving pure gold and creating environmental hazards. As my favorite subject in photography has always been the daily life of people, Swiss sociologist Nils Krauer and myself agreed to make a long-read story Quickgold.ru about 3 gold mining regions called after their gold-bearing rivers. We try to stay away from condemnation or justification and suggest that behind the gold production process there is a human life, worthwhile to observe and understand. Andrey Gordasevich

Yandoit surveying an abandoned mineshaft.
The adventure mountain is part of the touristic, recreative project be-MINE, that aims to breathe new life into the monumental coalmining site in beringen, the largest industrial-archeological site in flanders. The former mining city asked to add new function to the 60 meter high rubble mountain, and to redevelop the old industrial buildings into a cultural hotspot where its history can be experienced in a playful way. The intervention is a landmark on a large scale, but through its playable character it also reflects the small scale of a child. The mining 'terril' has been given a new meaning, rooted in both the past and the future. The design consists of three parts, that create a unity with the mountain and its past: a pole forest as a landmark, an adventurous prismatic play surface on the flank of the mountain and a coal square on the top of the 'terril'. The spine of the ensemble is a straight stairs that provides access to all levels. At night, a light line along the stairs makes the topography of the terril visible. The rounded poles refer to the mining past; they were used for supporting the kilometres long underground mining shafts. A part between the poles has been dedicated to an adventurous play course with balancing beams, climbing nets, hammocks, a labyrinth and a rope course. The poles are placed in a grid, which results in an interesting perspective effect: the sightlines create an experience that reminds of the dark mining shafts of the past. This tectonic landscape offers space to an endless variation of play options, and is scattered with crawling tunnels, climbing surfaces with climbing grips and 'giant stairs'. Its spectacular highlight is the more than twenty meters long slide, which is placed halfway up the hill and is integrated within the relief of the concrete play surface. Source by Carve. As global demand for natural gas grows, companies are using advanced technology to transport it from source to customers. Gas can be piped over relatively short distances. But cooling the gas to -162°C (-260°F) turns it to liquid for easier, safe shipment to faraway markets overseas. Shell provided the natural gas for the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) project more than 50 years ago. Today the world's largest provider of LNG, Shell continues to develop innovative approaches to unlock new resources of natural gas. In North-West Australia, for example, Shell is working with partners to build a giant floating production and liquefaction facility at sea, Prelude FLNG. Welcome to Shell’s official YouTube channel. https://www.911metallurgist.com/blog/ball-mill Learn about Ball Mill Critical Speed and its effect on inner charge movements. The effect of Ball Mill RPM speed going from sub-critical to super-critical helps understand the Ball Mill Working Principles of ball-on-ball VS ball-on-shell grinding. The Motion of the Ball Charge The input energy in ball milling is that applied by the drive to impart motion to the mill charge. Since the usefull output is that which goes into breakage of the feed material, it is apparent that it is the point at which the energy of motion of the media is dissipated that is of concern. Single Particle Motion: The outer row of balls being acted upon directly by the mill shell is prominent it, determining the motion of the entire charge. Besides dissipating a significant fraction of the total energy consumed by the mill (for example, the outer row of 50 mm diameter balls in a 4 meter diameter mill consumes close to one tenth of the total power delivered by the drive in being lifted and dropped), the outer row is the only portion of the charge in direct contact with the shell, and so forms the key link for energy transmission to the remainder of the charge. The only assumptions required for determination of the single ball trajectory are a coefficient of friction between the ball and mill lining, and unobstructed free fall after movement away from the lining commences. Although recognizably somewhat idealized, two interesting assertions were noted as a result of the analysis, as follows: a) Particle trajectory is independent of mill diameter. Although simply a confirmation of the basis for use of percent of critical, the most common form for describing mill rotational speed, the implication is more far-reaching. If 75 percent of critical speed is considered desirable for efficient grinding in a 2.4 meter (8 foot) diameter mill, then the same will be true for a 5.0 meter (15½ foot) diameter mill. At least in terms of effective charge motion, then, there is no justification for resorting to lower mill critical speeds at larger mill diameters. b) Particle trajectory is highly sensitive to liner lifter face angle. As can be seen in Figures 1 and 2, a change of lifter angle from zero (vertical) to thirty degrees results in a greatly subdued trajectory. The implications for machine performance are first; that power draw will vary with different original liner designs, as well as throughout the wear life, depending on the wear pattern; and secondly, that a desireable trajectory, even if achieved by the original liner design, will not be maintained unless the wear pattern is such that a consistent overall mill lining profile is maintained. Complete Charge Motion: Extension of ball charge motion studies to include the entire charge encompasses numerous complexities beyond both the scope of this paper and the extent of present investigations. However, a few observations considered relevant to this discussion are listed below: a) Ball charge level has a significant effect on overall charge motion. The tendency of the charge to slip back along the rising side of the shell is reduced as charge level increases, until reaching between 30 to 40 percent of mill volume (in one particular test mill) where slip ceases. Increased charge level (given fixed critical speed) beyond this level results in more cataracting (flying) as opposed to cascading (rolling) action of the balls, but only to the extent of about 50 percent of mill volume where swelling and crowding obliterates cataracting action by leaving no space for free falling. b) A definite transverse segregation of ball sizes is visible in the cross-section of a normally graded charge, with the large balls found at the perimeter at low speeds, and at the charge centre for high speeds. The reverse is of course true for the small balls, and more importantly, for coarse ore particles, which are more closely associated with the small balls in their dimensions. c) Increased lifter height, or reduced ball diameter, results in higher trajectories of the outer row of balls. However, within the range of normal (North American) operating practice (i.e. 35 - 40% mill loading, and 70 - 80% of critical speed) and for ball-size approximating the lifter height, the trajectories of the outer row are relatively unaffected by subsequent rows. This may be expected due to the lack of direct support from a lifter and the lower percentage of critical speed at reduced diameter.

According to some scientists, we must begin using more nuclear power in order to prevent global warming from accelerating. But that creates a huge nuclear waste problem. But scientists at the University of Sheffield think they might have found a very unique way of handing it that could make nuclear waste a problem of the past. Read More: Nuclear Fuel Processes http://www.nei.org/Knowledge-Center/Nuclear-Fuel-Processes "Nuclear power plants do not burn any fuel. Instead, they use uranium fuel, consisting of solid ceramic pellets, to produce electricity through a process called fission." What is Uranium? How Does it Work? http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Nuclear-Fuel-Cycle/Introduction/What-is-Uranium--How-Does-it-Work-/ "On a scale arranged according to the increasing mass of their nuclei, uranium is one of the heaviest of all the naturally-occurring elements (Hydrogen is the lightest). Uranium is 18.7 times as dense as water." Managing Radioactive Materials & Waste http://www.epa.gov/radiation/manage.html "Any activity that produces or uses radioactive materials generates radioactive waste. Mining, nuclear power generation, and various processes in industry, defense, medicine, and scientific research produce by products that include radioactive waste. Radioactive waste can be in gas, liquid or solid form, and its level of radioactivity can vary. " Radioactive Waste Management http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Nuclear-Fuel-Cycle/Nuclear-Wastes/Radioactive-Waste-Management/ "All parts of the nuclear fuel cycle produce some radioactive waste (radwaste) and the relatively modest cost of managing and disposing of this is part of the electricity cost, i.e. it is internalised and paid for by the electricity consumers." How does nuclear waste disposal work? http://science.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-waste-disposal.htm "Nuclear waste epitomizes the double-edged sword of modern technology. It's a toxic and radioactive byproduct of nuclear medicine, nuclear weapons manufacturing and nuclear power plants. In short, it's the type of waste that reflects one of humankind's greatest leaps in technology, but it also demonstrates our inability to deal with our own advances." A New Approach to Military Nuclear Waste http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/06/a-new-approach-to-military-nuclear-waste/?_r=0 "The United States has many pressing nuclear waste problems, but the worst may be the leftovers from the manufacturing of nuclear weapons." This company cleans up nuclear waste by turning it into glass http://grist.org/list/this-company-cleans-up-nuclear-waste-by-turning-it-into-glass/ "Among all of the terrible ways to get rid of nuclear waste, there's one that stands above the rest for being a little less horrible: turning the radioactive parts into glass, a process called 'vitrification.'" Glass Offers Improved Means of Storing Nuclear Waste, Researchers Say http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/08/120822101115.htm "University of Sheffield researchers have shown, for the first time, that a method of storing nuclear waste normally used only for High Level Waste (HLW), could provide a safer, more efficient, and potentially cheaper, solution for the storage and ultimate disposal of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW)." Nuclear Power Needed To Slow Climate Change, Experts Say http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/04/nuclear-power-needed_n_4211792.html "Some of the world's top climate scientists say wind and solar energy won't be enough to head off extreme global warming, and they're asking environmentalists to support the development of safer nuclear power as one way to cut fossil fuel pollution." A Message from Dr. Kerry Emanuel http://bit.ly/1fc6Dpu "As climate and energy scientists concerned with global climate change, we are writing to urge you to advocate the development and deployment of safer nuclear energy systems." James Adaryukov will discuss the virtues of smaller communities, and the economic, political, and social benefits they may have over larger nations and national coalitions. As someone who has lived in large capitalist and socialist nations, he is intimately familiar with the good, the bad, and the ugly of their interior workings, and living in smaller communities has given him insight as to their advantages. Spending most of his childhood in Germany, James Adaryukov returned to the United States only five years ago. He is pursuing a double-concentration in Economics and Neuroscience with a specific focus on human behavior, at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. James is also one of the school’s Flagler scholars, and is moderately fluent in Japanese. He will graduate from the Honors College in Spring 2019. Everyone likes Oreo and other Chocolate Sandwich Cookies! In this video tutorial I show how to make small DIY notebooks that look like this amazing dessert. For DIY Oreo Notebook you will need: for two "chocolate wafers" - a piece of cardboard, 2 kitchen sponges, 150 denier tights (brown), double sided tape, needle and thread; for "creme" - 3 sheets of A4 printer paper, stapler, school glue. Also you will need a glass (or smth round), a pencil and scissors. These do-it-yourself soft notebooks are so cute and look like real cookies! Sometimes I even want to soak them in milk... ;) And it is so pleasant to hold them in hand - they are soft like toys! When you will write all the pages - just unstick them from "wafers" and make new ones. It is really easy. The James Webb Space Telescope will change how we see our universe, that is, if it ever gets off the ground. How NASA Engineers Use Origami To Design Future Spacecraft - ://youtu.be/Ly3hMBD4h5E Read More: NASA Delays Launch of James Webb Space Telescope Again — This Time to 2021 https://www.space.com/41016-nasa-delays-james-webb-space-telescope-2021.html “The liftoff of Webb, the successor to the agency's iconic Hubble Space Telescope, has been pushed back from May 2020 to March 2021, NASA officials announced today (June 27). The project's development cost has risen from $8 billion to $8.8 billion, and its total lifecycle price tag now stands at $9.66 billion, they added.” The launch of Nasa's giant Webb telescope has been delayed, again https://www.wired.co.uk/article/james-webb-telescope-launch-date-delay “Nasa cited misplaced optimism as the underlying problem here – for an observatory of this scale, the slightest oversight can lead to untold issues. An independent review board set up by Nasa to ensure oversight concluded that there are “no small” problems on a beast of this size.” The James Webb Space Telescope https://jwst.nasa.gov/about.html “Webb will be the premier observatory of the next decade, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide. It will study every phase in the history of our Universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, to the formation of solar systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own Solar System.” ____________________ Elements is more than just a science show. In this lecture, I make the case that we each inhabit a story, describing where we are, where we are going, and the actions we must undertake to get from the former to the latter. These inhabited stories are predicated on an underlying value system (as we must want to be where we are going more than we value where we are). In addition, they are frames of reference, allowing us to perceive (things that move us along; things that get in our way), make most of the world irrelevant (things that have no bearing on our current frame), and determine emotional significance (positive: things that move us along; negative: things that get in our way). --- SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL --- Direct Support: https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/donate Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/jordanbpeterson --- BOOKS --- 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos: https://jordanbpeterson.com/12-rules-for-life/ Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief: https://jordanbpeterson.com/maps-of-meaning/ --- LINKS --- Website: https://jordanbpeterson.com/ 12 Rules for Life Tour: https://jordanbpeterson.com/events/ Blog: https://jordanbpeterson.com/blog/ Podcast: https://jordanbpeterson.com/podcast/ Reading List: https://jordanbpeterson.com/great-books/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordan.b.peterson/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drjordanpeterson --- PRODUCTS --- Self Authoring Suite: https://selfauthoring.com/ Understand Myself personality test: https://understandmyself.com/ Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/jordanbpeterson

Tim Hitchcock, Professor of Digital History, University of Sussex While 'big data' has grabbed the headlines in recent years, the creation of new digital tools has also changed how we undertake forms of 'close reading'. This talk will explore how 'big data' and 'close reading' can be more effectively integrated into a single research strategy that acknowledges the importance of seeing inherited culture both in detail - close up; and in context - at scale. It will also consider these methodological developments in light of the continuing importance of more traditional humanist theory.

The climate crisis pushes us into an existential crisis of the soul. While it is natural for us to shirk that discomfort, Quaker and climate activist Jay O’Hara suggests embracing that loss is the gateway to powerful action. Through the lens of his own loss and action, he exposes the paradox of faith that may give us the chance to build the new world we need, and the movement needed to get us there. Jay O’Hara is a Quaker and native of Cape Cod. Inspired by Wendell Berry, he moved back to his hometown in 2007 to pursue a faithful response to the climate crisis, while working as a sailmaker. He is the founder of Climate Summer, a transformational summer training program for student climate activists. Called to bolder action to stop the burning of fossil fuels, in 2013 he, along with Ken Ward, blockaded 40,000 tons of coal destined for the Brayton Point power plant with their small white lobster boat named the “Henry David T”. The ensuing legal proceedings garnered national attention when Bristol District Attorney Sam Sutter reduced and dismissed the charges against the two, calling climate change “one of the gravest crises our planet has ever faced“. Most recently he co-led the faith-based “Pipeline Pilgrimage”, and has co-founded the Climate Disobedience Center with members of the Lobster Boat Blockade team. For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Klondike Alaska charts the history of many of those railroads. ©KUAC 2005 DVD's of this program are available for purchase at www.kuac.org.

http://www.goldnscrap.com In this video tutorial i'm showing how to recover gold from electronic circuit board scrap. Specifically the gold plating that is found on the board connector edge - A.K.A the "fingers". This video is a complementary to the complete written tutorial on Gold-N-Scrap website (direct link below) The process applies to other kinds of gold plated itmes, given the substrate is unreactive (such as PCB, ceramic, glass etc'...). This process is less suitable for metallic items that are gold plated such as gold plated pins and gold filled items, though it will work with much effort and large consumption of acid. Post a comment and let us know how much gold do you think this recovery process yielded. This past Tuesday, special interests pumped big money into promoting or tearing down candidates and ballot initiatives in elections across the country. It was a reprise on a small scale of the seven billion dollars we saw going into presidential, congressional and judicial races in 2012. To sway the vote, wealthy individuals and corporations bought campaign ads, boosting revenues at a handful of media conglomerates who have a near-monopoly on the airwaves. No one knows the dangers of this 'money-and-media complex' better than John Nichols and Robert McChesney, who speak with Bill this week on Moyers & Company. Nichols is Washington correspondent for The Nation and a pioneering political blogger. McChesney is a professor and leading scholar of communications at the University of Illinois. Their latest book is Dollarocracy: How the Money and Media Election Complex Is Destroying America. "Democracy means rule of the people, one person, one vote," McChesney says. "Dollarocracy means the rule of the dollars. One dollar, one vote. Those with lots of dollars have lots of power. Those with no dollars have no power." Nichols tells Moyers: "Dollarocracy has the ability to animate dead ideas. You can take an idea that's a bad idea, buried by the voters. Dollarocracy can dig it up and that zombie idea will walk among us."
