Coal mining in America's heartland | DW Documentary

West Virginia, USA - under its wild mountain idyll hides the "black hell": A labyrinth of dark tunnels - hard life in a coal mine. [Online until: 15 August 2019] "Wild, wonderful West Virginia” - that’s how the small state nestled in the Appalachian Mountains bills itself. This documentary reports on the daily struggle facing local coal miners hoping for help from Donald Trump; a sheriff combating the opioid epidemic that has already claimed thousands of lives; and a Cherokee environmental activist whose efforts have earned her intimidation and threats. The whistle of a locomotive at the front of an old coal train, quiet winding roads, and hardly a highway to be found - that’s still the image that many have of West Virginia today. But beneath the forest-covered mountains lies a labyrinth of tunnels just one meter high, in which miners still spend their entire working days toiling in the dark on their hands and knees. The camera team accompanies a traditional coal mining family as they go about their day. Together with the family’s two sons, Scott and Steven Lockhart, the crew ventures into the mine. Conversations with the miners reveal why people who had been lifelong Democratic Party supporters are suddenly placing their hopes for the future in Donald Trump. But the documentary also ventures beyond the coal mines to uncover the lesser-known sides of this Appalachian state - from snake-handling Pentecostal churches to the bluegrass and mountain ballads of Alan Cathead Johnston. We also speak with Sheriff Martin West, who sued the country’s three biggest pharmaceutical makers for their role in the opioid epidemic that has swept the region. And we meet another person who has decided to fight back: Maria Gunnoe, a young Cherokee activist who has dared to take on the coal barons that are ravaging the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Coal Mines

43:44
The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, jacks and shearers. - H&T

Coal Mining the Modern Way: Newcastle, 1957

02:27
A silent newsreel item from 1957 about mechanised coal mining procedures at the Awaba State Coal Mine, near Newcastle in New South Wales. The item opens with shots of miners going down into, and later leaving, the mine. We see older footage of miners underground using picks and shovels to break up the coal and load it onto carts. A pit pony takes the coal away. The newsreel contrasts this with the modern methods of cutting coal from the coalface using a machine. Two miners bore a hole in the coalface and set explosives. Coal is loaded into a truck using a mechanical loader and taken to storage bins by a locomotive. A conveyor belt takes the coal from the mine to the Crusher Shed where it is transported away by truck. Coal Mining the Modern Way, Newcastle, NSW, 1957. NFSA title: 128513

MINING SAFETY FILM COAL MINE SHUTTLE CAR OPERATOR 45734

19:12
“The Shuttle Car Operator” is 1960s-era color film taking the viewer deep inside a bituminous coal mine to learn more about the coal-mining industry. The camera takes us into cramped spaces as drills make their way through the earth (mark 01:15) and coal hauled away on trolleys called shuttle cars. But the job of a shuttle car operator is one of the most dangerous in the coal mining industry, we’re told at mark 02:10, with one out of every seven transportation injuries involving shuttle car operators. To ensure safety the film discusses the importance of proper car maintenance and proper training of employees. Numerous scenes of shuttle cars in the bowels of the earth follow as the narrator continuously reminds the viewer of the importance of being vigilent and on the lookout for any physical hazards that may impede movement. Starting at mark 04:45 the film reminds of the viewer of those men who “paid with their lives” as crews are shown at work including checking ventilation shafts and removing hazards — though “failure to think about safety” leads to a (staged) fatality at mark 07:55. Other accidents follow, the result of workers too engaged in conversation and oblivious to changes in their underground environment, or those inadequately trained. If an operator is trained and alert, we’re told at mark 15:50, such tragedy can be averted. First introduced in the 1930s, shuttle cars are batch haulage vehicles in the underground mining industry. Shuttle cars are designed to work as a system with continuous miners, efficiently removing cut material from the working face and maximizing the productivity of the entire section. Heavy-duty, high-power drive trains enable our shuttle cars to haul heavy loads in the most difficult conditions. Traction motors power the permanent four-wheel drive system. The cast pivot axles are virtually indestructible, while the heavy-duty conveyors and abrasion-resistant conveyor decking improve reliability and durability. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? OSM expects its rulemaking to trim 7,000 coal mining jobs in 22 states

00:29
1/27/2011 - Peter Mail, a spokesman for the surface mining reclamation office, said the proposal's aim is "to better strike the balance between protecting the public and the environment while providing for viable coal mining." Mali said the document is the first working draft that was shared with state agencies, which are giving their comments on it. (More) http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=133248892 1/26/2011 - The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement document says the agency's preferred rules would impose standards for water quality and restrictions on mining methods that would affect the quality or quantity of streams near coal mines. The office, a branch of the Interior Department, estimated that the protections would trim coal production to the point that an estimated 7,000 of the nation's 80,600 coal mining jobs would be lost. Production would decrease or stay flat in 22 states, but climb 15 percent in North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. . . . West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection official Thomas Clarke told the Associated Press on Wednesday. "I've had OSM technical people who are concerned with stream impacts and outside contractors for OSM who are subcontractors on the EIS give me their opinion that the whole thing's a bunch of junk." (More) http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j4JC7Gs3f7cpoJMK1xc-iveOoZ7Q?docId=1b0c534404754dc7a452ff23f9b3194d Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar commended the employees of the Office of Surface Mining on November 19, 2010, for their efforts to improve oversight of state surface coal-mining operations. In the past 12 months the Office of Surface Mining has increased the number of oversight inspections to evaluate how each state is administering its regulatory program. This a clip from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6WSvVpdm-w ---- 12/27/2010 - http://www.register-herald.com/todaysfrontpage/x258589936/What-s-in-a-name-Mountaintop-removal-vs-mountaintop-development (Excerpt) "In my mind, mountaintop 'removal' implies the site is mined and then left barren, lifeless and flattened. This couldn't be further from the truth," said Chris Hamilton of the West Virginia Coal Association. He points to the mining permit requirement that forces miners to restore the mines to their approximate original contour or to configure the land for an "alternate use." Restoring the land occurs in about 90 percent to 95 percent of former surface mines, Hamilton said. "We rebuild the mountain peak, resculpting it to approximately as close as possible to the original premining topography of the land, then we reseed it with grasses and trees," Hamilton said. However, Vivian Stockman, an organizer for the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, told West Virginia Public Broadcasting that a flyover of the southern West Virginia coalfields suggests little development on former surface mine sites. "If they're hoping to, you know, create shopping malls on some of these, I don't know where they're going to get all the shoppers," she said. "All the communities around these areas have been driven away." She added that the notion that West Virginia needs more flat land is a myth. "Back in 2002 we had some volunteers create some maps for us," she said. "There were just massive amounts of land that are not, in any way, shape or form, developed." Researchers from the Natural Resources Defense Council found that about 1.2 million acres and about 500 mountains were flattened by surface mining in central Appalachia. An aerial imagery analysis by NRDC found that about 90 percent of mountaintop removal sites were not converted to economic uses. Only about 4 percent of West Virginia and Kentucky mountaintops had been redeveloped, NRDC found. --- 11/18/2010 - Salazar Commends OSM Initiatives to Improve Oversight of State Surface Coal Mining Programs - http://www.doi.gov/news/pressreleases/Salazar-Commends-OSM-Initiatives-to-Improve-Oversight-of-State-Surface-Coal-Mining-Programs.cfm --- In June 2009, the U.S. Department of the Interior (Interior Department) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of coal mining in six states in central Appalachia. Through the MOU, the three agencies intend to strengthen oversight and regulation and minimize the adverse environmental consequences of mountaintop removal mining. How is coal mined? - What is Surface Mining and Underground Mining - Video

08:10
How is coal mined? Read Full Story: http://www.spoonfeeding.in/2013/02/how-is-coal-mined-what-is-surface.html Mining is the process of removing coal from the ground. There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

Hard Coal: Last of the Bootleg Miners (screener copy)

01:20:30
Directed by Marc Brodzik and Produced by Woodshop Films. US. 81 mins. Filmed from 2004-2008, completed in 2009. The discovery of anthracite, or hard coal, in northeastern Pennsylvania more than 200 years ago resulted in hundreds of corporate mines in this eleven county area throughout the early 20th century. Although anthracite coal makes up only 2 percent of all the coal reserves in the United States, the area boasts more than 7.3 billion tons of this clean burning coal in a very concentrated geography. In the mid 1800s, there were hundreds of active mines with more than 17,000 coal miners- mostly poor immigrants- toiling in them for twelve hours daily. The corporations had little concern with the health of the workers, and it was extremely dangerous work, with frequent accidents and few safety measures. Miners were burned in gas explosions, crushed by tunnel collapses and run over by mine cars. If they survived the job, many miners suffered the slow and painful suffocation called black lung, caused by continual exposure to coal dust. Today, only 6 anthracite mines are left in Pennsylvania, down from 60 in 1995 and more than 140 a decade earlier. These remaining mines are worked by "bootleg" miners- typically independent, family-centric teams struggling to carry on the family tradition and support their families, working in mines they may have dug themselves. This film will bring you face-to-face with the proud, persevering individuals facing these challenges. Share their frustration with the current system and their fear of losing dignity, independence and the only means of survival they know.
