Geology of Western Australia

03:24
This animation of the 2015 geological map of Western Australia shows the geological development the State during the past 3.8 billion years, highlighting some of the important geological events that have shaped its evolution, as well as the origin of the State's mineral wealth. The animation runs in 100 million year time-slices in which white areas represent areas overlain by younger rocks, or that were not in existence at that time.

Underground miners in outback Western Australia have unearthed rare gold specimens which geologists are calling a "once-in-a-lifetime discovery". Workers at the Beta Hunt mine near the small town of Kambalda, 630 kilometres east of Perth, have brought more than $15 million worth of gold specimens to the surface in just four days. The gold-encrusted rocks were found about 500 metres below the surface in an area just three metres wide and three metres high. Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them

Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them: https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/mining/thousands-of-mining-jobs-are-waiting-in-western-australia-but-aussies-dont-want-them/news-story/9abb09bee9c85fc6419597a14e77df3e. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd_ODCcrc4jEWgi4qYyy0wg?sub_confirmation=1  From 2012 to 2016, the mining industry experienced a severe downturn, culling close to 60,000 jobs and making full-time work an almost impossible get. But now, especially in Western Australia and Queensland, the mining industry is on the road to recovery — and companies are begging Aussies to come and work for them. According to the latest data from SEEK, the mining, resource and energy sector has consistently recorded the largest growth in job ads for the past 11 months. The sector is throwing out 32 per cent more job ads now than it was at the same time last year and is posting almost four times more job ads than Australia’s average. But just because mining companies are putting out thousands of ads and offering salaries paying well over $150,000 doesn’t mean Aussies are picking them up. Earlier this week, the CEO of WA’s Chamber of Minerals and Energy backed a migration agreement that would hopefully combat a severe skills shortage in the mining region of the Goldfields. If approved, the Designated Area Migration Agreement would allow overseas workers to be flown over to work in the mines and would make them exempt from the skilled migrants requirement. Chief executive Paul Everingham told the ABC there were more than 1000 vacancies in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining sector and said the region was at crisis point.  “You can’t sugar coat that — they’re available now and they’re not being filled, so however you can get them (workers),” Mr Everingham said. “All Australian companies want to employ Australians first, but if there aren’t enough Australians … we have got to remember there’s an infrastructure boom going on in NSW. “So if we have to set up special immigration or work zones, our members would definitely welcome the ability to get access to skilled workers immediately.” The WA mining industry is advertising for thousands of jobs ranging from cleaners to tradesmen to university-educated engineers. But following Mr Everidge’s comments, a number of people involved in the state’s mining industry have said more needs to be done to make relocating an attractive proposition. Despite the huge salaries fly-in fly-out workers earn, most complain of having no work-life balance. FIFO workers typically have higher rates of suicide, struggle with depression due to long hours and loneliness and report higher rates of workplace bullying and alcoholism. In 2015, the West Australian government conducted a 10-month investigation into the state’s FIFO workforce. Lifeline WA admitted in October last year it still had no idea exactly how many FIFO workers were affected by mental illness or how many had committed suicide while away from their families to work in the state’s mines. Even the report issued after the lengthy investigation admitted “the inquiry struck several problem areas in relation to statistics”. “Clear data was difficult to find in the areas of: a definitive total number of workers employed in the Western Australia resources industry on a FIFO #Thousands, #mining, #jobs, #waiting, #WesternAustralia, #Aussies, #don’t, #want, #them #miningindustry, #mentalillness, #mentalhealth, #workersdying, #miningindustryaccounts, #flyinflyoutworkers, #Australiangovernment, #miningsector, #resourcesindustry, #Australiancompanies, #parttimework, #miningcompanies, #miningregion, #mentalhealthissues, #migrationagreement, #skilledmigrantsrequirement, #Companiestalk, #miningjobs, #worklifebalance, #suicidestatistics, #prevalencerate, #suiciderates, #crisispoint, #energysector, #productionsites, #skillsshortage, #problemareas, #WesternAustralia, #Australia, #AustraliaandNewZealand, #Oceania, #Queensland, #UniversityofWesternAustralia, #AustralianBureauofStatistics, #CommunityServices, #MentalHealthCommission, #ChamberofMineralsandEnergy, #PeterMiller, #PaulEveringham, #NatalieWolfe

Australia's biodiversity: mining

06:13
Mining occurs throughout Australia, but its direct impacts on biodiversity are relatively limited compared with other major land uses because the areas affected are generally small. Dr Alan Andersen talks about the main impacts of mining on biodiversity and how these can be appropriately managed through processes like strategic regional assessments, use of bioindicators in rehabilitation, and biodiversity offsets. Originally made for the executives of the mines, now a must play course for any golfing nutter or fanatic. Come check it out Newman information & tourist attractions are brought to you by World Holiday Destination. Book your Newman Accommodation Newman is a town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is located about 1,186 kilometres (737 mi) north of Perth, and 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of the Tropic of Capricorn. It can be reached by the Great Northern Highway. In the 2006 Australian census, its population was 4,245. Newman is a modern mining town, with suburban-style homes contrasting with the surrounding reddish desert. The Hickman Crater is 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of Newman. Commercial area ============ Typical of company towns, Newman is laid out with a core, where shopping and hotels are located, surrounded by residential areas, with more industrial activities on the outskirts. There is one shopping mall in the town, two shopping plazas, three hotels, and three bars/restaurants outside of those contained in the hotels. One public outdoor pool serves the town's population. Transport ============ A privately owned railway, the Mount Newman railway, was constructed linking it to Port Hedland which itself was upgraded to handle shipment of the ore to the world market. On 21 June 2001 a train 7.353 km (4.569 mi) long, comprising 682 ore cars and eight locomotives made the Newman—Port Hedland trip and is listed as the world's longest ever train. The ore trains are typically over 2 km long. Newman is also a service town to the nearby mining settlements like Tom Price and Paraburdoo. The town is served by Newman Airport. Architecture ========== Being founded in the 1960s, Newman's architecture reflects the modernist styles of that decade and the next, being predominantly functional and devoid of detail or embellishment. As the town was founded and built by a steel company, the majority of buildings use a steel frame construction. This applies to the suburban style homes themselves, most of them being two prefabricated halves inserted together into a steel I-section frame, the columns of which are left exposed on the exterior of the home. This construction method serves not only to showcase the company's product, but also gives strong resistance to cyclone winds which can affect the region from time to time. For this same reason, most houses are elevated from the ground by a few steps. Many houses also have large air-conditioning units situated next to them to provide adequate cooling against the very hot summer temperatures. Climate ========== Newman has an arid climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. The temperature reaches or exceeds over 38°C almost every day in the summer. On 15 January 1998, the temperature reached an all-time recorded high of 47.0°C. Precipitation is sparse, but the influx of monsoonal moisture in the summer, which generally begins in December and lasts until April, raises humidity levels and can cause occasional heavy storms. Winter months are mild to warm, with daily high temperatures ranging from the 20°C to 26°C (18-22°C), and low (nighttime) temperatures rarely dipping below 6°C.

A power parade of locomotives on the longest and heaviest trains in Australia. The locomotives featured here are SD70's as imported from the US and Canada, GE Dash 8's as built or modified by their Australian operators, GEVO's with the bigger radiators fitted for the harsh Pilbara climate, SD90's, Dash 9's and Australian built GE C44aci and EMD GT46C's built locally to suit the lighter axle load limits on the old state owned systems in Western Australia. BHP and ARG ( a Queensland Rail subsidiary ) use distributed power whilst FMG and Rio Tinto run all the power up front........other than a few places where they use pushers. Places which unfortunately are in restricted areas. Train lengths vary from 159 cars on the ARG trains to 250 cars on the FMG trains.

Mt Moss Mine is the largest magnetite deposit on Australia's east coast. The mine is situated in the old Ewan mining field, 110km west of Townsville in North Queensland, which saw pioneer Australians explore and mine rich copper and tin in the area from 1890 until the 1930's. Since 1958, various international mining companies including BHP and MIM have explored the area for copper, lead, zinc and tin mineralisation. In 2005 Curtain Bros bought from Jervois Mining NL (a small, publically listed exploration company) mining lease ML10171 and set up a subsidiary company called Mt Moss Mining. From acquisition, Curtain Bros commenced the construction of site workshop facilities, offices, laboratory, camp and accommodation facilities as well as 50 km of roads to a standard suitable to haul large tonnages of iron ore product. During the construction phase, over 30,000 meters of combined percussion chip and diamond core drilling was completed to delineate a magnetite iron ore resource in excess of 20Mt. The potential for significant additional resources containing copper and zinc credits is very high. Mining commenced from the Willett's Knob, stage 1 pit in 2007. A stage 2 pit cutback commenced in November 2007 and was completed in early December 2008 to a depth of approximately 70 meters. Mount Moss Mining is processing stockpiled magnetite ore through two separate benification circuits to produce two saleable product streams. The mine employs over 75 personnel working across all mining areas including mobile and fixed plant operators, and mechanical and electrical trades, geology, mines engineering, metallurgy, administration, catering and housekeeping.

37% of Australia Earmarked for Coal or Gas Mining

01:01
New mapping reveals that 37.3% of Australia is covered by coal and gas licences and applications. That amounts to 285 million hectares - an area almost 13 times the size of Great Britain! That means your home, your local water source, or even your favourite holiday destination could be at risk! Click here to check it out! At risk are many nationally significant water resources, including: 1. The drinking water catchment for Sydney 2. The recharge waters of the international tourist icon Mataranka Hot Springs (NT) 3. The Yarragadee aquifer of south-west WA, groundwater resource for Perth 4. The magnificent desert rivers of the Lake Eyre Basin in south-west Qld 5. The Mereenie Sandstone aquifer which provides the water supply for Alice Springs 6. The vast water source of the Great Artesian Basin across Qld, NSW and South Australia The mapping was conducted by Energy and Resource Insights, who compiled the relevant coal and petroleum tenement data and release areas from state and territory governments in April 2016. The full research note outlining the methodology from Energy and Resource Insights is available here, and a formatted map for printing is available here. Where Gold Hides - Chunky 6.5 Gram Gold Nugget - Western Australian 2014

03:13
I was in an area that is not known for Gold on the map, or even recognized by the Mines Department as a "Gold Area", but is proving to be quite the opposite. I've been frequenting this area for 4 years now, and am still finding decent nuggets, as you will see in this video. The area is known to "the Pro's" and as such, in many places, has been hit pretty hard .... so why is this a good spot then? From what I have seen, the Pro's were mainly after the big or easy Gold, and therefore left a lot behind... usually anywhere it got too hard to detect... ie among logs and fallen branches as well as around the lower hanging branches of trees. Consequently, about 90% of the Gold I have found in this area is within a foot of a tree. I have a saying..."If it looks too hard to get into, then chances are it's never been got into". It takes a bit more effort and work, but when it pays, it pays well. Like, Comment, Share and Subscribe. CSIRO - Mapping the Northparkes Mine (shorter version)

01:35
In April 2011, CSIRO researchers mapped over 17km of the Northparkes copper/gold mine in New South Wales, Australia. The mine operators required a locally accurate 3D surface model in order to determine whether and how large equipment could be moved through the decline. Vehicle localization underground was achieved using a spinning SICK LMS291. Specialized SLAM software developed at CSIRO allows the vehicle position to be tracked in real-time while simultaneously generating 3D point cloud maps. Two vertical lasers were also mounted to acquire data at uniform density for surface reconstruction. The data was collected in under two hours while driving a site vehicle at regular driving speeds (20-30kph), without disruption to mine operations. The final surface model can be generated within a few hours of acquisition. The resulting surface model is globally consistent and was georeferenced using available 2D mine plan data. The hardware used was previously constructed for other experiments, and due to the short turnaround time for this deployment, it was left mostly unchanged for this application. The plastic sheeting over the sensor payload was required to protect the equipment from dust suppression mist present in some areas of the mine. Goldfields-Esperance, Western Australia

02:33
Goldfields-Esperance is one of the largest regions in Western Australia and though the majority of it is sparsely populated, Kalgoorlie and Esperance are major towns supporting significant populations. Despite the regions seeming harshness and remoteness from Perth, many Goldfieds-Esperance towns were some of the earliest to be settled in the fledgling colony. Esperance was settled in 1863 for agriculture and Coolgardie spring up almost overnight when gold was discovered and was the third largest town in the colony by 1892. The gold rush of the late 1800s gave birth to many towns that flourished and faded when the gold ran out. Some such as Kanowna, Dundas and Niagara disappeared back into the dirt leaving little more broken bottles and rusting wire to signify their existence, while others manage to hang on in a greatly diminished form. For residents and travellers alike, the Goldfields-Esperance region is generally thought of as having two halves; northern and southern, demarcated with an imaginary line at Kalgoorlie. The northern is typified by desert landscapes dominated by mining, the southern sees trees and green farmland right up to granite bound coast. Being both inland and southern, the temperatures daytime vary widely. Summer months can see scorching temperatures exceeding 40°C while its not uncommon for the night to dip below 0°C. The coastal areas have particularly temperamental weather patterns with cold cloudy and warm sunny skies alternating throughout the day. Falling into an abandoned mineshaft is a real danger in the northern parts of the region as the country around Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie, Menzies, Leonora and Laverton is riddled with more than 100 years of mining activity. Most of these holes are not signposted or marked on maps but are readily identified by the white pile of quartz or greenish waste soil nearby. Perfectly normal looking ground may be honeycombed with old tunnels mere meters underground that could subside without warning. It would be prudent to tell someone where you are going if you plan to go out exploring and be careful about where you step. QUESTIONS? We would like to hear from you! Gold Nugget Left Behind - Beautiful 11.5 Gram Water Worn Western Australian Gold Nugget

01:16
Gold Nugget Left Behind - Beautiful 11.5 Gram Water Worn Western Australian Gold Nugget I had spent the morning with my GPS, looking and marking out any good looking ground I came accross. I had found quite a few areas within the 10sq Km area that had been chained...., most of these were adjacent to areas that had been dozed in the late 70s and early 80s. This particular spot looked extremely interesting, and when I saw what looked like very thorough "chaining" I couldn't resist a swing. I chose a small triangle of ground that was adjacent to the dozing, but was also litterally where "Old Mate" stopped chaining. For some reason he stopped chaining and left a small triangle no bigger than 10 x 15 meters. I started at the top end of his last Chain mark and simply continued on where he would have. I literally took 8 paces and this is what I found. From the time I parked to time I found it was no more than 5 mins. And I am going to throw this out there. This was in a very popular spot, which has seen a hell of a lot of detectors over it, especially in the last 2 years. Just goes to show what other operators can miss. Swanview Layout at the 2015 AMRA-WA Exhibition

05:42
The Swanview Sn3 1/2 layout at the Australian Model Railway Assn. - Western Australian Branch model railway exhibition that was held over 30th, 31st May and 1st June 2015. The layout is based on the local Western Australian prototype in the late steam era - 1960's - modelled to "S" scale - 1:64 - representing the local 3'6" gauge prototype using standard 16.5mm (HO) gauge track. Swanview station was located on the Eastern Railway that linked the state capital, Perth, with the state's agricultural hinterland and further inland the mining areas around Kalgoorlie. Swanview is located 14 miles from Perth and at this point eastbound trains are struggling up a long, steep 1 in 50 climb over the Darling Range. The Eastern Railway, and Swanview Station passed into history when the opening of the new Standard Gauge railway from Perth to Kalgoorlie in 1966 made the old line rewdundant and it closed shortly afterwards.

Wittenoom, Western Australia

00:59
Wittenoom is a ghost town 1,106 kilometres (687 mi) north-north-east of Perth in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is the site of Australia's greatest industrial disaster. The area around Wittenoom was mainly pastoral until the 1930s when mining began in the area. By 1939, major mining had begun in Yampire Gorge, which was subsequently closed in 1943 when mining began in Wittenoom Gorge. In 1947 a company town was built, and by the 1950s it was the Pilbara's largest town. During the 1950s and early 1960s Wittenoom was Australia's only supplier of blue asbestos. The town was shut down in 1966 due to unprofitability and growing health concerns from asbestos mining in the area. Today, eight residents still live in the town, which receives no government services. In December 2006, the Government of Western Australia announced that the town's official status would be removed, and in June 2007, Jon Ford, the Minister for Regional Development, announced that the townsite had officially been degazetted. The town's name was removed from official maps and road signs and the Shire of Ashburton is able to close roads that lead to contaminated areas.

The town of Big Bell was gazetted as in 1936. The Big Bell Mine was the source of the town's name. By 1955 the town was deserted and today all that remains are a couple of small ruined buildings and the remains of the impressive Big Bell Hotel.
