Fixing Logitech MX Master Stuck Gesture Button

353 ratings | 21120 views
The MX Master is an amazing mouse, but mine has had one serious flaw. The gesture button was getting stuck in the down position, making the mouse unusable. Fortunately, this turned out to be an easy fix. I hope it works for you. p.s. This was my first how-to video. I apologize for the length and lack of editing.

Thank you so much for this video man. Saved me a whole heap of trouble. 💙

So I did this and it worked perfectly, now 6 weeks later it has stopped working again, with exactly the same problem. I'll never buy another logitech product again, Unbelievable that this even happens, and their customer service is appalling.

Thank you so much! Spent the equivalent of $10 on a set of new screwdrivers to fix a $100 mouse - definitely worth it.
MBHarsh (1 month ago)
is there a way to turn off the gesture button via software? cause i wont wanna do this hardware-repair-method
Lo (1 month ago)
Man, thanks a lot. I didnt know WTF was going on with this mouse. Helped me up!

Thank you mate, I was on to my 2nd MX mouse before I realised this problem. Your video was very helpful, thanks for uploading.
Alexandre Troise (2 months ago)
Do not need kits... Just go to Logitech Options and set this button function to none. The mouse should get back to normal instantaneously...
Maciek Folta (3 months ago)
Thanks man! You helped me a great deal. Cheers!

Legend! Before seeing this video I would force a micro-flathead in that gesture button wedge to lift up the button. It worked until the gesture button finally cracked, I loosened the mentioned screws and covered the cracked button (now fallen off) with electrical tape. It might not be pretty but it's a damn good mouse! Thanks :)

I wanted to do this 'surgery' a couple months ago, but really didn't want to mess with the plastic cover on the bottom. Well, 10 minutes ago I finally decided to attempt it. Did everything as shown and its fully functioning again. The button isn't as 'clicky' as it used to be, but hey, it work again! Thanks for the quick and helpful video, really appreciate it!

I have a MX master 1 and a MX master 2, but I do recommend people to but MX maxter 2, since it's more sensitive than the first generation

Another tip is to simply disable that button using logitech software if you don't use that feature.

If you're in a pinch/don't have a torx screwdriver and need a quick fix, you can always disable the gesture button in Logitech Options; at least then the mouse will work.

Oh wow... Logitech sent me a replacement mouse for this problem last year and the new mouse was acting up now. Happy i didn't threw away the old mouse as i just fixed both with your tutorial :-) Many thanks!

Thank you so much ! was hoping it would be something simple rather than buying another as this mouse is awesome as you mentioned.
Josh Berg (6 months ago)
Awesome video. I ended up trimming the edge of the rubber thumb pad slightly as part of the issue ended up being the rubber getting stuck on the edge of the mouse. Just use a sharp knife and trim a very small amount to give a gap on the edge. *You can also buy new foot pads on aliexpress for like 4 bucks instead of replacing the messed up ones ones*

Thanks a bunch! I was ready to stomp mine into the ground. It's always banal quality issues like this with Logitech...
Flavius Tech (6 months ago)
You saved me few months that i was gonna wait for warranty repair at a shitty ecommerce site, i did not wanted to avoid warranty to open the mouse, but hell, you had same issues like me. Mouse was alt-tab-ing when i was moving cursor, sometimes even cursor sensor was freezing because of that Gesture button. I am web developer and this mouse is a bless. That infinity scroll makes all the money, especially if you are a programmer that working with large css/php files with thousands of lines of codes. I am your subscriber :), if you have another issues i know where to come :P.
Flavius Tech (6 months ago)
Btw, the dongle also broked, i pluged so many times when i was moving mouse from laptop/desktop/servers etc. In the end dongle started to be unrecognizeable by OS, i fixed it by open plastic cap from dongle, and insert a tiny paper between usb contacts and plastic, the contacts were loose, now that gesture issue was fixed by ur video :) . I will do anything in my power to keep this mouse working. I use it like 14 hours/day, at office at personal computer, at laptop, server etc.

Jan Rohweder (8 months ago)
Also worked perfectly for me. One more tip: When I assembled the mouse, I tightened up the two screws below the button (under the stickers). This led to the same bug again, so I loosened them up a bit as well and now the button works perfectly again. Btw I contacted Logitech Support regarding the issue (my mouse was purchased just 6 months ago) and all they had to say is that I have to contact the shop where I purchased it. For a $100 mouse, you would expect some better support, but this is a joke and Logitech should really improve that...
Woodman567 (8 months ago)
Thanks for the tutorial! My ribbon cable ended up becoming disconnected while taking it apart which is fine because I don't use any of the side buttons. So pumped to get back to using this mouse!
Saburo Okita (8 months ago)
Thanks a lot, i managed to fix my mouse back in less than 10 mins!
unscrewing half turn really helped unstuck and get to work perfectly the thumb gesture button and made the pointer of the mouse work again. Thank you very much
Jr Elumba (9 months ago)
Savior! thanks for the tutorial. Fixed it in 5 mins. thanks
Jonathan W (9 months ago)
Since you never use that button you could have just opened the logitech software and chose the "unassigned" option. problem solved.
Jan Rohweder (8 months ago)
Tried that when my button was stuck and it did not help. The mouse does not move if the button is being pressed regardless of the assigned functionality. It is not a software issue, it is an issue with the controller in the mouse.
Michel Bruggeman (10 months ago)
Amazing, worked like a charm!! I thought it was the laser and was ready to throw away this expensive, yet very good mouse!! Thanks, man!!! BTW I also don't see any use for that gesture button, didn't even know it was there...
Matti Reinikainen (10 months ago)
Thanks a bunch! I ended up using PH00 for the outer screws and PH000 only for the black adjustment screws inside.
Nathan D (11 months ago)
Good video. Tips for others: don't peel the pads off all the way, just peel the sides to expose the screws. Also, used compressed air to clean out the inside and you probably won't need to turn more than 1/2 a turn. Saved me $100.

This worked!!
Aryte ~ Alex H. (11 months ago)
thank you dude, i just repaired mine :)
x86cowboy (1 year ago)
Thank you. I had the same problem. Your solution worked for me! One small modification I did was I left out the screws under the sticky pads. This way, if the problem continues I don't have to unpeel the sticky pads over and over again. The only two screws I put back are the screws that were originally uncovered at the top of the mouse (underside the mouse buttons). The mouse enclosure still seems pretty tight with only two screws holding it together.
Kilian Jahn (1 year ago)
Thank you, worked well for me. I further imprufed by adding some tape between the plastic pcb-holder and der plastic plate between under der rubber of the gesture button. Reduces aqueaking noise and the preasure for the button release.

i was prepared to go and buy the MX 2, but then I came across this video and now my mouse is as good as new. you just saved me £70. thank you sir!
PL (1 year ago)
Thank you!!!!! Thank you!!!!! I didn't mind the lack of editing, it was like a friend of mine sent me a lifesaving tutorial. I'm a graphic designer and I use the gesture button for mission control on my Mac, so as you can understand with all those apps open it is used very often. A couple of weeks ago it started making a squeaky noise and since yesterday it was completely stuck.. a nightmare. I managed to do the whole procedure without the tiny little Philips screwdriver (I used a really small flat screwdriver left back from my Uni days). Tip.. I didnt take off all of the low-friction pads.. you can take off only the edges and leave the middle part still sticked on the mouse, that makes it sticking it back much more easy. Cheers from Athens!!

Thank you :)
Per Kristian Rolness (1 year ago)
Thanks, wouldnt have thought about adjusting the 2 screws to get a bigger clearance. I was sure it was dirt or something stuck in there. But theres another temporary fix for this problem too, i found out today you can go to the logitech options in start - programs - logitech you can assign the Gesture key to none and it seems to fix it too. Been having a headache for some days because all of a sudden my computer alt tabbed without me even touching the keyboard, been googling and everything and found no solutions or anyone else with this problem.... Was thinking it had to be my logitech keyboard or mouse malfunctioning when it struck me "didnt it use to be a key (gesture key) on my mouse, because it was jammed up pretty good and not moving at all XD But i went into Logitech Options and assigned the key to none and had no issues after.
Works like wonders!

This trick fixed the problem I had with the gesture button of my mouse - thank you!
Tks man! You salve my life!
tony chen (1 year ago)
There another simpler way, without dismantling the MX master mouse. If you don't use the gesture thumb button, just set the gesture thumb button to "NONE" on the MX software. By using a temporary working mouse.
NorthernLord (1 year ago)
Worked alot better then sticking a knife in my gesture button every day or so. Thanks dude!
sebykos (1 year ago)
omg, you ruined the sliding feet when you peeled them. now your mouse scratches the desk
PrimalFuture (1 year ago)
sebykos They don't look as pretty now, but the mouse still slides across my desk smoothly. And I did take them off several times so I could make the video - sacrifice for the greater good. If you want to fix your mouse, you have to pull them off. Just be careful and be sure you get both layers of the feet at the same time when you pull them off.
Maximilian Dahl (1 year ago)
Worked for me, thank you!
JR_UK (1 year ago)
Thank you this worked a treat. Disappointing I have bought into another Logitech product that develops a vault (had the last MX mouse which had the loose battery issue). More annoyingly I have purchased the same mouse for work and home so not looking forward to my other one displaying the same issue in the future!
o0julek0o (7 months ago)
I went through 3 of these, so expect it.

If you think this is annoying look up "MX Master scroll wheel bug"

same shit. this mouse have some many bugs that I actually can't recommend it to anyone.

seem like I have the same issuse, gesture button is stuck and not working while it also caused sensor to not track the cursor, otherwise all the other buttons and both wheels are working, have to try fixing it! thanks

awesome guide, thanks plenty!
deezynar (1 year ago)
The laser on my Logitec is not lighting up.  You said that your mouse was not moving the cursor on the screen, and it was caused by that button being stuck.  You did not if your laser was lighting up or not.  Does that button turn the laser on and off?  Thanks.
deezynar (1 year ago)
OK, thanks.  With that information I had confidence that my laser was probably working, and the gesture button was stuck just like yours.  I don't have the specialized screwdrivers that it takes to disassemble the case, so I went after it a different way.  I used a very thin, very sharp, knife to slice into the joint where the soft rubber material meets the hard plastic case, at the left-most area.  After slicing all the way through the rubber along the whole length of the straight section, and going slightly around each of the corners, the gesture button freed up and the cursor is moving again.  The cut is almost invisible since it runs in that joint.  So even though I did not use your method to fix my mouse, I am in your debt for providing the information I needed to attempt my fix.  Thank you very much.
PrimalFuture (1 year ago)
My MX Master mouse is working right now, and I cannot see a laser. I'm guessing that the light is in a non-visible spectrum. When you press the gesture button, the cursor on the screen will not move until the button is released. I believe the invisible? light stays on order to track the gesture that you make, but that the screen cursor freezes.

Great idea! I haven't had any problems since I did the video but if I do, I'll give it a try!
Zorc (1 year ago)
thanks a lot I use the gesture button a lot and due to this issue I've went threw 3 of these mouse. now its works better than brand new; I think who else assembled it is making those screws too tight.
Pedro Albuquerque (1 year ago)
Thanks bro!!, its really work to me!
TheBrewjo (1 year ago)
Thanks for the fix, I made a slight tweak though. There's a groove in the plastic mold that guides the switch-plate, so I gouged that about 0.2 mm with a flat hot-tip. You just have to undo the two silver screws holding the switch assembly to gain access to that section of the over-molding. I prefer not leaving fasteners loose where possible.

Thank you, i damaged my mouse physically a bit but atleast its working fine now ..
